I think too many people get caught on the great intro bonus, only to have to struggle to use enough on just about anything to qualify. You said the important line at the beginning: “I fly a lot”. Most people don’t. You guys get dozens and dozens of referral bonus. Most people don’t. Most people don’t stay at hotels, and large/expensive ones at that. For the average person, finding the right cards for the specific expenses they ALREADY HAVE is where is at. Thanks for helping with that!

Very well done uncle Luke. I am always concerned about fees, and I usually consider how to liquidate them before getting any of my cards, so I usually have a plan/set-up in place to get the af back, BUT it's a PIA worth of management. I am actually going for the 4-card set-up for Delta Gold status, while cancelling both my Amex Bonvoy cards and the personal Platinum.
Yes, I am a CAPX1 hater, but I MOSTLY for the flex and acceptance, I would of keep it for a year, but if I was going to keep it any longer. I have been cutting down on too many bank/cards ecosystems. Even the news of the Citi Strata hadn't excited me as it wasn't going to make me forget the 2015 Citi Prestige.
I strategy is to concentrate my spending on CHASE, AMEX, and BILT.

Great stuff, nice to see an honest resentment of reigning in excess spending. 20% off a $500 purchase we don’t really need isn’t “$100 in value” it’s $400 wasted
And even though I’m doing the same thing as you I still broke down and got the aspire withOUT a SUB because I’ve always wanted to try it, I needed a clear credit, and have a lot of points to burn still but ultimately see this downgrading to no AF

I was able to take advantage of chases freedom Flex deal in Dec 23 so I currently have 5X points on grocery & gas spending for a year. So all I have been using my Amex gold for is dining and 250 dollars seems like a bit much for just a dining card. Especially since I get get 3X dining with my other chase cards as well as the flex. Uncle Luke, I think you'll go without an AMEX Platinum card until you're eligible for another signup bonus. The Platinum card recently became a coupon-book card and you seem too busy to spend your time trying to extract value out of that card. Lastly, I don't think there is a set amount of AFs that is considered too much. It really depends on how much you set aside for travelling each year. For example, if I plan to spend $5k/year for the next 5 years to travel, I would not mind having $2k of AF each year, assuming I'm getting more value out of it. I think travelling and experiencing the world is essential for life/personal growth, and as one gets older, travelling becomes more difficult. So it's best to do this while you're relatively younger and physically able to.

Yo heads up. As a veteran (as am I), you get Clear with the military discount of $99/yr. If you get the Green Card, you’ll be paying $150 for a $189 credit that you’re overpaying for. Unfortunately I’m in the same boat. I think the aspire card gives clear doesn’t it though?
