Hi Stan and Luke. I'm a fan of both your channels. I know you may not get very many views as with CC videos, but I'd love to see content on your investment strategies some time. @Luke, what do you have planned for retirement?
We live in a Delta hub so our flight choices are pushed that way. I have Delta platinum but that annual fee hike ticks me off. I’m seeing if the mqd boost makes a difference for me or not
Thats what keeps me from applying for the amex platinum. I don’t think i travel enough to justify the AF. So far now im very comfortable with the CSP + AmEx Green.
After AMEX poor decisions so far this year. I was going to get an AMEX Bonvoy Brilliant card. But, instead I skipped that and downgraded my Delta Reserve to a Delta Blue for now. My C1 duo is doing the heavy lifting right now, 💪🏼!
I think too many people get caught on the great intro bonus, only to have to struggle to use enough on just about anything to qualify. You said the important line at the beginning: “I fly a lot”. Most people don’t. You guys get dozens and dozens of referral bonus. Most people don’t. Most people don’t stay at hotels, and large/expensive ones at that. For the average person, finding the right cards for the specific expenses they ALREADY HAVE is where is at. Thanks for helping with that!
Thanks for watching!! But I have to point I don’t get dozens and dozens of referrals. 🤣. I’ve talked to people for an hour about a card and give them my referral and they will go home and apply for the card w/o the link I gave them! Haha. Hopefully I can get some more referrals if my channel grows
@@LukesPointsandMiles I wasn't referring to you exclusively. I was speaking in general terms of most of the TH-camrs talking about CC. My own sister did what you pointed out above. I gave her a 45 min lecture on which cards to get based on her expenses and goals, in which order to get them, send her referrals to all, and she went and apply for them without the referral. Seriously?.......
Good Stuff. For me personally, all those AF are worth it as I get plenty of value out of it. But life happens and things change and you have to be able to adopt. And nothing wrong with canceling and waiting. Plus you can always come back. Smart move
Very well done uncle Luke. I am always concerned about fees, and I usually consider how to liquidate them before getting any of my cards, so I usually have a plan/set-up in place to get the af back, BUT it's a PIA worth of management. I am actually going for the 4-card set-up for Delta Gold status, while cancelling both my Amex Bonvoy cards and the personal Platinum. Yes, I am a CAPX1 hater, but I MOSTLY for the flex and acceptance, I would of keep it for a year, but if I was going to keep it any longer. I have been cutting down on too many bank/cards ecosystems. Even the news of the Citi Strata hadn't excited me as it wasn't going to make me forget the 2015 Citi Prestige. I strategy is to concentrate my spending on CHASE, AMEX, and BILT.
Smartest move, dumping AMEX coupon book fee cards, and love the simplified setup. Did the same myself this year. Your time is $ too! Wish you would have touched on the value gain from not having to manage so many coupon cards. Maybe in the next video you can touch on that.
That’s a good idea. My biggest gripe is forcing myself to order food through uber eats and trying to book a hotel through FHR when I could just use points.
Great stuff, nice to see an honest resentment of reigning in excess spending. 20% off a $500 purchase we don’t really need isn’t “$100 in value” it’s $400 wasted And even though I’m doing the same thing as you I still broke down and got the aspire withOUT a SUB because I’ve always wanted to try it, I needed a clear credit, and have a lot of points to burn still but ultimately see this downgrading to no AF
This year im going away from my amex MR earning cards. I canceled my Amex Platinum card in January. In March i will cancel my Amex Gold card. I have instead gotten the revamped Delta Reserve card; to me it actaully got better with the upgraded companion cert and the credits it recieved. Im still holding my two Amex aspire cards as im a Hilton loyalist. But for every day spend i am going to be using my chase trifecta to cover the categories.
Great topic! Nothing wrong with keeping things tidy. It should give you the opportunity to see if those fees really made a difference in your travel plans. Some you may come back to and it may open doors to other card opportunities.
Sounds like a solid plan Luke! Been needing to reprioritize my AF as well. I was able to take advantage of chases freedom Flex deal in Dec 23 so I currently have 5X points on grocery & gas spending for a year. So all I have been using my Amex gold for is dining and 250 dollars seems like a bit much for just a dining card. Especially since I get get 3X dining with my other chase cards as well as the flex. So am planning on canceling the Gold card this month unless Amex wants to give me a sweet retention offer. LOL Anyway good video thanks for sharing

Pragmatic, sensible, and unapologetic. Great video and great plan. I have no set number in my mind about how much AFs are too much as long as I know I'll get positive value without too much headache nor dramatic changes to my spending habits. I think Ask Sebby's says the same. I'm at 5/24, and am targeting the Chase IHG Premier next. Did you say you get approved even when you are over 5/24? If so, how?

Luke, I closed my 2 Amex platinum but kept the gold card , since I still have open Amex with Uber , I am still getting Uber credits from both my platinum’s that were closed couple years ago . If you have your platinum and gold linked to same Uber account I would recommend closing the platinum but leave your gold card open and see you might just get your platinum credits monthly .
It is my understanding that only the Citi premier transfers 1:2 to Choice, not the other Citi cards... just some thoughts since you are talking a lot about Choice.
Yeah if I canceled the premier and I really wanted to plus up my choice points, I could really stack them up. I’m not sure if that would be the best way to go. I would likely stay at choice properties maybe once a year
Uncle Luke, I think you'll go without an AMEX Platinum card until you're eligible for another signup bonus. The Platinum card recently became a coupon-book card and you seem too busy to spend your time trying to extract value out of that card. Lastly, I don't think there is a set amount of AFs that is considered too much. It really depends on how much you set aside for travelling each year. For example, if I plan to spend $5k/year for the next 5 years to travel, I would not mind having $2k of AF each year, assuming I'm getting more value out of it. I think travelling and experiencing the world is essential for life/personal growth, and as one gets older, travelling becomes more difficult. So it's best to do this while you're relatively younger and physically able to.
I recently closed my AMEX Hilton Surpass card. Having said that, I believe that I reap all the benefits with the AMEX MS Platinum, AMEX Gold, AMEX Hilton Aspire, and AMEX Delta Reserve cards. Now that you’ve reduced your AF, what does that bring your annual total to?
$3000 a year could get you a lot of food and drinks at restaurants and bars in airports. You should Adam J a drink if you see him in one of the airport bars
Yo heads up. As a veteran (as am I), you get Clear with the military discount of $99/yr. If you get the Green Card, you’ll be paying $150 for a $189 credit that you’re overpaying for. Unfortunately I’m in the same boat. I think the aspire card gives clear doesn’t it though?
I’m almost 47. I’m done the day I turn 52 if I can hang that long. Now when I say retire, I mean from my regular job. I will never really retire. I’ll have other stuff going on. But I currently work a job that isn’t for old men.

What?! 5 years away from retirement? No way! Yo, the Amex Platinum and Amex Gold getting the axe. Sounds like you’ll be more of a Chase fanboy 😅. You’ll go 1 yr without the platinum and then go crawling back 😂. Let’s see if I’m right.

My fees between my wife and I are $400. Here are my fee cards. Chase prefered and 1 hyatt, 2 marriot got 10 free nights and just got the ihg with the 165,000 bouns
That ihg card is so underrated. You will likely get plenty of value from that one!
I currently have 7 cards with annual fees. I plan to cancel or downgrade to $0 AF on two of them. I also plan to add two more with annual fees with the CSP and the AmEx Platinum. In the end I will have 7 cards with $1,488 annual fees. I may have to evaluate after another year.
yeah we really need to evaluate every year. This game moves fast
I think you'll get your Platinum back after being stuck at the gate with Adam's kids, haha. 😊
Ha!
What?! 5 years away from retirement? No way! Yo, the Amex Platinum and Amex Gold getting the axe. Sounds like you’ll be more of a Chase fanboy 😅.
You’ll go 1 yr without the platinum and then go crawling back 😂. Let’s see if I’m right.
after visiting my local lounge last week, I'm already having second thoughts on it1!!!

Interesting set up!
@@LukesPointsandMilesOops! Add Freedom Unlimited. 1.5X transferred to Sapphire Reserve is 2.25X.
That's BIG.
Was that Aunt Connie in the red bathing suit?
Mayhaps?
Sounds like a plan Uncle Luke! I think you can survive a year without the Platinum. Once you go Platinum is difficult to go back to cards that provide inferior experiences😂 As always, great video and information brother!🫵
Thanks for watching, player!!!
Great video❤
Glad you liked it!!
