Honestly this reminds me of the JP Morgan quote: "If you have to ask, you can't afford it." The black card isn't something you "ask" for; it's just something that you "get" bc of your lifestyle.

Just changed over from centurion (Japan) to Plat. Wasn’t worth it anymore since I am not using the card that often and the fees went through the roof. Overall I thought it was more for bragging rights than an actual benefit and with the new fees and my age I thought I don’t need the bragging anymore. Happy with the plat.

I would be curious to see if Amex introduces a card in between the Plat and Centurion. I know there was some talk precovid about maybe a $1500 AF card, if this hypothetical card was invite only and maybe offered Delta Silver, Hilton Diamond, Marriott Platinum along with credits like $300 Airline, $300 FHR, TSA, CLEAR. Sure it's a coupon book but I think there could be a market for HENRYs (high earners, not rich yet) in non target cities like the midwest with remote work taking off. 🐎

I think they can definitely get more aggressive with spend requirements, similar to how Ambassador status at Marriott went from $20k to $23k requirement, and how it's harder to find table games with lower minimum bets. House rules and if they need to 're-fine' their clientele, they can definitely adjust when they seem fit 🐎🐎🐎

🐎 I think the interesting point to remember is - do you need it? Even if you did get the tap on the shoulder for the invite and paid to get it, now what? Does the benefits actually translate to useful personal benefits. I have a mix of personal and business AMEX card spending probably just shy of the requirements but it’s mostly business operations related - I’m not spending $20k/night to stay in an international resort. Cool to know more details about it, but the Platinum and Gold card mix will suit me just fine for the foreseeable future. Interesting video!

This was the Best informational vid I seen on the AMCC since I started to watch vids on them. This video has poke on ideas I had about getting the card. I think my income and credit score and history play a big role I also always believed they want people who shop and travel and certain places. Like the silent wealth people. People who go to High to Ultra high wealth places that are not widely know and shop at Upper end Ultra luxury shops which your retailer pyramid seems to be right on the money. I do think Goyard goes in the top part. Where you live was not something I thought about but makes since. Brand ambassador also makes sense. Again wonderful vid from a person who does not own the card.

Just saw this video on my feed. Loved the insights. In 2018 I moved to DC area and was invited to apply for Platinum with no initiation fee and an introductory offer to offset the annual fee. I found it strange because I was relatively low net worth and had recently graduated college making about an average salary for my age. I wonder what that push for pre-approved platinum meant for dilution of the centurion requirements even further.

Yes, had the business Centurion for a long time...didn't think I was getting the value from it so went back to the Platinum, then was invited for the personal Centurion which I accepted and really like many of the perks.....my favorite is no lines and always a guaranteed seat in the Centurion Lounge at airports, can't tell you how many times I have been at the airport and a flight is delayed for some reason and the terminal is extremely busy with no where to sit, let alone eat and drink and be productive. The Centurion card is clearly the Birkin Bag of cards.
It seems like Amex likely cares more about the total numbers of cards in circulation than anything else. So, yes, it seems likely that they adjust for inflation and probably slightly for economic downturns too.

🐎 Question, I’m new to AMEX, got a gold last year, half way spent 75k, this year is almost triple. I then got an upgrade notice for Plat. I instead decided to not upgrade but instead flat out get the Plat so I have gold and Plat. I heavily use dinning (got 100k points so far this year in dining) and travel this year increased to 70k on gold. I figured I would get more bang for my buck by going Plat and keeping Gold for restaurants and super markets. I also use the credits as well. I think this is the right move and I used your calculators which seem to be the case. Mainly curious if others are doing this method or I should just go full platinum? I’m also getting the welcome bonus on the plat here soon as well. Thanks for all your help!

A few years ago I was looking at a new Mercedes C 63 coupe and asked the sales guy what the max was I could put on a card. He looked at me and said, “We can do up to $3000.” So much for reaching your minimum spend! The Service Department at Mercedes, however, has no limit.

NYC address (but Queens). ~500k spend, ~100k on watches (Richemont mostly since the big hype began) and ~100k on typical apparel that leans luxury but also lots of more regular stuff (Proper Cloth etc.) Rest almost entirely travel including fancy restaurants, flights (I actually buy mostly main cabin domestically), and hotels (mostly Ws/equivalents with some Ritz/Regis thrown in). Most (80+%) is work driven that I expensed but AMEX probably doesn't know/care.

There really needs to be a card between the platinum and the centurion. The average spend on the platinum is in the tens of thousands. There is a demographic that spends in the hundreds of thousands, but not enough for the centurion. A card in between catering to higher spenders and offering a bit more exclusivity than the platinum but less than the centurion would be a great product.

What American Express should do is put up a list of global perks and allow the individual cardholder to select what they want from what's available. Not everyone lives in California, New York, London, or the like. Hence, forcing things like Equinox, Saks, Harrods, etc. will be useless to a lot of members. The ability to tailor the service to cater to the needs of the individual would go down better with a lot of people. You don't have/need Equinox, then you are not getting to take full advantage of the service. Having the ability to swap that for foreign airline status, free hotel nights, Amazon credit or whatever offsets & equalize things by allowing every single holder to maximise the benefits for their own particular need.

I've had the Sapphire Preferred card for almost 5 years now, but it has sat in my night stand to act as an emergency card. So I'll start using that as my everyday personal, and then I applied for and got the Ink Unlimited for the everyday business card.
My goals are related to value of redemption. I like the idea of being able to apply points/miles to more than one thing, travel being at the top of that list, compared to only either AA or HA. My question for you is, which should I get next? Ink Cash? Or Ink Preferred? I am the type of guy who would go to Staples and buy a bunch of Visa Gift cards (at 5x for the first $25k annually) and just make regular purchases with that, just to take advantage of the 5x multiplier.
Any advice would be great! Cheers!

It’s not surprising, but good to know 🐎 mmm I feel like because of inflation, they’ll possibly get stricter on invites & add spending requirements.

I have a slightly different viewpoint from reading the FT threads and other DP gathered. I don't think the annual spend for the personal Centurion is that high. Its more like $300-500k annually depending on other factors. Those other factors are type of spend (doesn't have to be luxury spend), how long you have been a card member, consistency of spend, and overall credit. Note workarounds are a Private Wealth relationship with Goldmans and probably Morgan Stanley, where your assets can offset spend requirements.
Amex is walking a fine line with type of spend. Say someone spends $500K plus annually but not on luxury items, hence not extending an invite. You could alienate that card member.

Right. $500k a year on non-luxury items. On mcdonalds, starbucks, and economy class tickets.

You can downgrade your Platinum card for a different card like the Gold card or the Green card, in order to avoid the Platinum’s annual fee.

I had a Centurian card plus the Platinum. To be honest here I found out that the Platinum offered more. Plus a lot less fees etc. So at one point I ended my Centurian card. I still have it as a “souvenir”. It’s made out of titanium. It did impress many women when I used it. As a single guy that was probably my biggest benefit of having it! 😎👍

🐴 Great post. Very helpful background and history. I can see that i'm spending in mostly the right places but probably not at a level that stands out, particularly in light of NYC location. To your point, it's not clear that there is a positive cost/benefit for me vs Platinum.

I saw this mystical card out in the wild just the other day. Some rich lady from Monterrey, MX was using it to buy fast food, and in my pavo mind, I was like "how dare you." I was so close to wealth and she was using hers to buy cheap and super unhealthy food. 😭

It was a mixed bag. In Japan, 50/50. Better to have a Visa w/tap to pay as a back up. In Europe, the card usually has to have a chip. Learned that the hard way trying to buy train tickets.

For the benefits given -- I don't think the Centurion Card is worth the price. Even if I could spend that amount of money -- I'd much rather spend it on maximizing as many points and miles on welcome bonuses, accelerated offers, etc than on one black card with benefits that don't suit me. It's the wow factor that has so many people chasing it - I get it. But for me, it's not worth the chase.

I have a Platinum. I was in a Centurion lounge recently. There are areas reserved only for Centurion holders. Those few people I saw in those areas were kicked out of the area because they didn't have a Centurion card so the areas had no one in them. Why? Because hardly anyone has a Centurion.
