For our last Fire Emblem game in the marathon for now, we're looking at possibly the largest one yet, Three Houses. This has the tried and true tactical RPG gameplay we know very well by now, but this time there's another portion added to the standard Fire Emblem formula, where there's more emphasis on socialising and bonding with your units than ever before, as you teach your students to fight hard and make friends along the way. How well does this new system work though, and may we expect to see this more often in future titles?

Fire Emblem: Three Houses was released in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch, and once again made by Intelligent Systems. Fire Emblem: Three Houses puts you in the shoes of the protagonist, Byleth and allows you to choose which of the three houses that you can teach the students in. In this video, I will be going through why Fire Emblem: Three Houses for the Switch is A Completionist's Nightmare.

Byleth had such a goat-ed rise, not even just in the game:
Byleth went from a liked character to slandered, to liked, to being added to smash , to being hated, to being loved and accepted by the smash community, to being replaced, then preferred and in engage,
To now where they’re one of the most popular characters in the series and have turning into a cash cow
    Thanks Three Houses ☺️

Byleth is not the reason people liked 3 houses. I think it’s fair to say they liked 3 houses in spite of Byleth.

One I don’t wanna get too deep into
But as the protagonist of the most popular fe game, and being one of the most recognisable characters from smash and the like, even feh polls.
Also the top post on the fe3h subreddit is of Byleth and their family in a what if senario,
Same with the top on the main fe subreddit

Most purchased ≠ Most popular; there’s likely more paper towel sales than computers, but to say people enjoy paper towels more than they do computers is an inaccuracy. Likewise the switch is the most available console to play a fire emblem game since the wii. So it is the most accessible, this doesn’t mean the it is the most popular or “well-liked, admired, or supported by many people” because it likely is the only exposure people have ever had to the series. You can’t ask a person that hasn’t eaten a banana whether it is a better or worse fruit than an orange as they’re throwing away an orange peel.
But let’s say most purchases = most popular for the sake of the discussion. Even if the game is the most popular, this says nothing about the quality or likability of the protagonist. Games with almost no characterization for the protagonist have sold well (call of duty, binding of Isaac, etc.) because the focus is the mechanics not the characterization.
One of the most recognizable characters from smash is an unsourced claim, but I’ll assume you mean very well-played and represented. Smash is a game that falls into the call of duty and binding of Isaac category where characterization means almost nothing to the gameplay satisfaction. In alignment with this, the reason why Byleth is well-played and represented is the community views the character as top-tier. This is why the character is often played. It has nothing to do with people admiring or enjoying the character itself, just the mechanics of said character.
In regards to the subreddits, since FE3H is well-purchased many people have been exposed to it, and since Byleth is the protagonist of that game. It would be impressive if the primary posts weren’t about that character. As they are the focal point for the entire story. Why is it then that it is at the top of the main FE Reddit? Again, exposure.
If you’re making the argument Byleth is the character the most people have been exposed to. Then yes I’d probably agree, but I don’t believe that metric to be in any way useful, to determining popularity.

Great vid. But you kinda missed an important detail.
Lord Arundel(Edelgard's uncle) is Thales from Those Who Slither in The Dark and Cornelia is also one of them as well.
They are shapeshifters like Monica/Kronya and Tomas/Solon.
TWSITD are important in Edelgard's route as she was allied with them as the Flame Emperor and they experimented on her and her family to give her two Crests.
So the question is: ¿Why doesn't Edelgard have a chapter dealing with them?

It's important to note that Nemesis did not lead TWSITD, instead they manipulated Nemesis who was just an average bandit at the time and used him as a puppet to defeat the children of the Goddess because they wanted the world for themselves. Also the death knight did not summon the Javelin, TWSITD did and in fact the Death Knight warns Byleth so they can both surivie as the death knight wants to kill Byleath himself.

Three Houses is my favorite Fire Emblem! ❤ What I love about this game so much is the atmosphere, the story, the lore, the music everything even the gameplay was ultra fun. I think Fire Emblem works best if you can replicate the atmosphere of a Medieval setting not only the time period, one reason why Fire Emblem Engage didn't worked for me was because the games art style and coloring choices really doesn't fit Fire Emblem. Three Houses used the better approach, washed out colors, sad emotional music and character and world art style what fits is medieval time period. The lore and story in Three Houses is unmatched, there is not a single Fire Emblem game what comes close to it and the gameplay is amazing like in alll Fire Emblem games and that's why Fire Emblem Three Houses is the BEST.

@@Official_RetroMania and you sound like a typical fanboy who acts like three houses story îs a masterpiece. Yeah, nemesis who was hyped în The first cutscene, The king of liberation who fought against The nabateens to eliberate humanity from their rule, was used în a random last chapter în verdant Wind, dumping a lot of exposition before The last chapter, he died with no build up again. And I bet you consider Dimitri în his emo stage a n amazing character cuz "omg he îs like me, he îs so sad and hot uwu". Especially his amazing comeback to reality after touching the avatar's hand, 10/10 writing, let's go finish the empire. Or rhea, she was written pretty well în White Clouds. But after The Time skip, she doesn't exist în azure moon, she is barely mentioned în verdant Wind, and în crimson Flower her character was reduced to angry Karen with mommy issues. If The lore and story îs so good, why is azure moon, The route that ignores the story and lore, The most loved one? I am sure everyone îs so sad that azure moon didn't focus on the argathans and they got rekt In a random chapter without Dimitri even realizing it. I mean the argathans are top tier masterfully written bad guys, am I right? Everyone liked their role în The story, right? Right? Three houses does have good characters, even The one dimensional ones like The side students are colorful and unique, although quite one noted at times, The story execution on the other hand îs flawed and incomplete. As for The gameplay, it's The least fire emblem, which îs why casuals enjoy so much, cuz it's not a fire emblem game. The difficulty îs nonsnesical, hard mode îs too easy, and maddening îs too unfair and it wasn't even play tasted properly. Engage, despite having a bad story, has arguably the best gameplay în The franchise. Criticising a game doesn't mean that I am a hater. You sound like a fanboy who overpraised a game, when you said three houses is the best fire emblem game.... Tellius games, and fire emblem 4 has aa way better story. Even simple stories like echoes and sacred stones have a much better structured story than three houses, complex story doesn't mean better, especially since the execution îs mediocre.

@@mihaimercenarul7467 I liked Dimitri's character development arc facing off reality and dealing with his anger and revenge thoughts, thoughts what are understandable considering the circumstances. I am far from a fanboy myself, I do consider Three Houses the best written Fire Emblem game I have played this far granted I have only play Awakening, Three Houses and Engage so I still have a long was too go but right now I am grinding myself through the Trails of games and I love these games a lot! Back to the topic, one critique I can give you what bugs me about the story in Three Houses is how Dedue is technically NOT dead, even if you miss bounding with him so that you can rescue him whatever. In my Blue Lion run I didn't saved him and honestly I find it better so, I wished he was actually dead for good because his sacrifice is what pushed Dimitri and what created a very unique motivation, a guy already dead inside but that one sacrifice kept him going even when he lost the will to live. I do agree that Nemesis should have had more screen time but because the game is so large with a never before seen cast of characters sadly some characters get pushed to the side. However I also think that wasn't the point of his character, he and the ones who slither in the dark are there to show the duality of humanity, the dark side so the speak while Rhea and Sothies are the good and evil of the opposing race. There are multiple sides with multiple agendas, I also like how they explain the crests and the weapons how they came to existence it sounds crazy for our world but in the world of Fire Emblem it absolutely explains everything and makes sense. I also love the mystery of the civilization what came before us, I mean you can't tell me you weren't surprised when you saw ultra modern technology in a medieval setting, is every intriguing. These small details and then finding the lore out, putting the puzzle pieces together what happened thousands of years ago learning about aliens and God's and human greed and how the weapons and crests came to be and how there is such a technologically advanced civilization what got whipped out almost ending the whole world is very insightful. I find it more interesting when games try to make sense and explain the history and lore how everything came to be and I think Engage dropped the ball there they just feed you small pieces not even worth mentioning but the world seems very interesting to explore and learn about is history. I do agree when it comes to Engage that the gameplay is extremely well made but this is a argument you can give to any FE game, I played this 3 games so far but all 3 of them had excellent gameplay, even if I rant about art style choices like in Engage or the story I will never say anything bad about the gameplay because that's something Intelligent Systems exceeds every single time.
And yeah that's my opinion about Three Houses, not perfect by any means but compared to Awakening and Engage it is my favorite, I can't say it will stay my favorite once I play the other games but thus far it is and I hope you can accept my take if not that's fine opinions are subjective at the end of the day.

The Blue Lion route is solid but I wished they put more screen time showing WHY Edelgard started the war. The Blue Lion story is also the least lore heavy line, yes I do like how we get these interesting interactions between Edelgard and Dimitri and I loved Dimitri's character development arc but a lot of the appeal of Threee Houses is the lore, why did the ones who came before us had ultra advanced technology? Who is Sophie? Where did that God came from? How did humans create these weapons and how did Crests came to existence...
But well I suppose the game wanted to put this in a different route, I wished the game only had one route. Besides of this small critique Three Houses is amazing and my favorite game in the series.

Three Houses when like I look at it from a game design perspective is so like horrible imo when it comes to how similar routes are, with the maps. The fact the game has so much freedom, that the optimal play there is to put everyone in wyvern knight. The fact characters die off screen and the game overall looking graphically as bad as Sword and Shield. It also did commit that sin of JRPGs that Persona 5 made me realise through it's subversion of it with everyone in P5 hating your guts in that I hate a protagonist in a JRPG who just gets praised to hell and back by the other characters, it feels like a cheap way to make the player feel good.
However this game got me into FE, so even with that massive laundry list of issues I have as a fan of great game design, it is ultimately a game I still don't dislike. However if someone told me it was a shit game.. I can't even lie I'd struggle to disagree.
It honestly just feels undercooked and unfinished with how certain plot elements and characters are handled that makes me feel the game needed at least another 2-3 years to cook. Like from an objective like game design perspective and hell even story perspective with how much I dislike the story outside of anything to do with Dimitri, It's like a D tier game imo, but like speaking for me personally, I'd give it a B
IK people love this game and think it's great, and I respect that. It's just when I look at it from the perspective of someone who really is curious on what makes good and bad mechanics, 3 houses kinda failed for me.
Also congrats Josh, you're now let out of Fire Emblem prison.
