  • With the success of Awakening garnering new fans to the Fire Emblem series, Intelligent Systems thought to create three whole new games based on one big decision in the story, where the protagonist has to choose whether or not to join their blood related family, or stick with the family they grew up with. Whichever game you bought determined the path you take, but how well does this design choice work?

    Fire Emblem Fates Birthright, Fire Emblem Fates Conquest, and Fire Emblem Fates Revelation were released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2016, after the massive success of Fire Emblem Awakening and reviving the Fire Emblem series. Fire Emblem Fates is three games with a similar premise, but Fire Emblem Fates also splits the stories into three separate Fire Emblem Fates games. Fire Emblem Fates was made by Intelligent Systems, Trying Too Hard as a result.
    This is my Trash or Treasure video on Fire Emblem Fates - Trying Too Hard.

    To explain the Odin Selena and Laslow situation brought up near the end of the video, it's explained in a cutscene for one of those DLC maps that those three are actually the characters from Awakening. They were brought into Fates' world by Anankos. What's actually weird is that Selena (Severa)'s daughter is basically a clone of Cordelia from Awakening.

    • @fortello7219
      @fortello7219 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      You can actually find out very easily that Odin Selena and Laszlo are literally the characters from Awakening without DLC. The easiest of which is this story event with Odin's daughter, who will have the birthmark denoting her as royalty in the awakening world.

    • @cupie2255

      Caeldori can potentially be Selena's daughter, yes, but in Fates, the children are tied to fathers, specifically Subaki in this case.

      Think you mean Caeldori is a clone of Cordelia, Severa/Selena's mom. If Selena and Subaki get together and she's the mom of Caeldori, apparently they have sort of special support dialogue.

    Uhhh, I’m sorry to say, fates isn’t the only game in the series with incest. A major part of genealogy’s plot is in regards to incest and how it resurrects basically the anti christ. Also three houses has some freaky family relations considering there is a character who is basically your daughter and grandma at the same time and you can marry her. There are 2 other characters who literally consider you family in their S support with the protagonist.

    • @martianunlimited
      @martianunlimited 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Exactly, and depending on how you pair couples in Blazing Blades, you can retroactively make cousin pairings in Binding Blades. Personally I find reddit's and reviewers obsession with associating FE14 with incest a bit strange.
      1) from FE6 onwards you have to choose to advance the supports, so if the player chooses to spend the only S-rank support a character can have on something they say they find socially unacceptable, it is really on them.
      2) while socially taboo in the modern era (especially in the western world), consanguineous marriages was normal in the medieval era especially among royalty. If anything, I would have thought that it would be the literal war crimes committed by the protagonists that they would find an issue with.

    Couple things I want to note. First off Odin, Selena, and Laslow aren't just references to Owain, Severa, and Inigo, They are them. Some of their supports confirm this but past that there are two DLC maps that also spell it out. The other thing I wanted to note is that Corrin's Hoshidan siblings are also not related by blood much like their Nohrian siblings, so while yes marrying your step siblings is awkward and gross there isn't a biological problem there, still weird as hell though. That being said there is actually two blood relatives that Corrin can S support with and that is just straight up disgusting, those being Azura and Shigure the former being their (First) Cousin and the latter being their First Cousin Once Removed. Granted most people probably miss that last little (disgusting) bit of information because as far as I know It's only reveled in one of the DLC's (I want to say it's in one of the Heir's of Fate missions) so no surprise most people miss it.

    Late, but Forrest both as a person and a character isn't transphobic. He's a man who likes to dress in feminine clothing but deals with hatred because of it, including from his father Leo. The game's writing (at least in English) has him stand as a figure to represent those who society mistreats or tries to hide because they're "different" so if anything he stands for supporting LGBTQ+ people rather than being against them.
    He has a really nice line which sums this up in which he says : "The only way the world will grow more tolerant is to see people like me.... See us living, loving, and being both our unique selves and quite ordinary."

    I was with you up until 36:48 with your Takumi rant. I think you forgot a fundamental factor about Takumi: MAKOTO WAS HIS MOTHER TOO. From his perspective a person raised by nohrians strolls in who is supposedly his long lost sibling and causes the death of his mother and queen. And in the situation you bring up Corrin chose nohr so basically Corrin got his mother killed and then said fuck yall im going back to the people who caused the death of our mother. Now explain to me how Takumi being pissed off at him is "insensitive" becuase Corrin saw his mother die. SO DID TAKUMI!

    As a Fates consseiur myself, I have to say that placing so much emphasis on story is high key ill-advised. I'm never going to stand up for Birthright, but I've played the other two maybe a dozen times put together and I have to say, Fates's gameplay is the only one that I can genuinely CONFIDENTLY say is completely thought out and designed around its systems. The mastery of the pair up mechanic results in gameplay flexibility in ways that you genuinely just CANNOT get otherwise.

      Every emphasis or effort put into the story of Fates was masterfully done, from the two sides aspect to the hidden real war behind the scenes. That's why everybody was so excited for the story after watching the previews and trailers. They just forgot to write the actual story.

  • @mistral-phoenix408
    @mistral-phoenix408 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Wow man, respect to you for playing all three! I've been playing Fates lately and my god, yeah, the story is eh. Corrin is as plain as flour. The characters are rather bland as well. I played Birthright first after finding Conquest in GameStop years ago and the clerk was like "You've never played Fire Emblem? Here's Awakening and Birthright instead." And so I chose Birthright because I liked the colors even though I liked Nohr's aesthetic. I like Conquest despite having the worst of the three plots. It had fun maps and more interesting characters that weren't all squeaky clean like Hoshido. I'm a fan of the old time armor and the magenta colors, and if I was Corrin, I would chose to side with the family that i've known ever since I was a child rather than the ones I JUST MET and turns out, we only step siblings so the whole "Chose loyalty or your blood" thing is false. Revelations is technically chosing your blood.
    I remember Possessed Takumi being genuinely scary and kinda sad and that our fights with the Hoshidian siblings having more sense then our final one with Xander in Birthright. And that the Awakening three are in Nohr so it kinda makes sense to go their side after learning about that.
    Conquest was very challenging with not knowing about My Castles and DLCs and being new, but the OST kept me through it and Azura's Dark Song is much better than her Light Song. Birthright's OST is good too, just not as special in a way. There's tons of games with the Japanese style but not nearly as much as the Knights and Middle Age IMO.
    Revelations is eh, I'm playing it currently and it does drag. Having all siblings and a 'golden route' is great hands down, but to kill off Scarlet and Izana and introduce Ryoma, Xander and his retainers and Leo and his retainers quite late in the game (Ch16 part 1&2) which their workers are usually underleveled and die easily (ODIN). But the soundtracks introduced is great as usual. Fates really had amazing music and great battle animations expect for Nohr Noble. Or any secondary tome user. The way Nohr Noble Corrin swings it around like a sword is jarring.
    So Fates isn't all bad like the community chalks it up to be. It's subpar. You got sword protag, royals, dragons, loli people and all that.
    Three Houses really does the whole "You can only chose one path" much better and there's no Sweet Home Alabama with the ability to marry your "blood" siblings who are actually just your step siblings, especially Takumi.
    Unless Rhea counts, then...

    My biggest problem with “FE: Fates” was that they called the Nohr game “Conquest”, but if you chose the Nohr side, your Corrin was still a do-gooder that tried not to kill people, etc. I wanted to be a conqueror dammit! And crush Hoshido like a bug with my Nohr siblings! Instead you stay with the evil king and his cool-looking (but also kind of “bad guy” looking) adopted siblings but then act like a friggin Disney Princess most of the story.

    My takeaway with Fates is that, due to having way too many writers, not enough time and way too much stuff to do, it ends up making really banal statements and treating them like they're deeply serious comments on the nature of the world and the human condition. The core of the story is about a Black Kingdom and a White Kingdom fighting because the Gray Kingdom between them vanished (and also is hidden and evil), and every conversation and discussion in the game is built around the idea that things not being as simple as a black-and-white conflict is shocking and unexpected. I got that from the marketing, thanks. A lady has been telling me I'm the gray waves all game. I get it.

    Fates needed to be renamed.
    Birthright - Paint By Numbers or Awakening-Lite.
    Conquest - Not A Hero or Corrin is the Biggest Idiot.
    Revelations - Just Read the Wiki Summary or Jokes On You For Spending $100 Buying All Three Paths.
    I would say Birthright is the best of the 3 games. It sold more units than Conquest and story-wise, it’s the least frustrating of the 3 Fates games.
    What holds each game back were the intentions of Intelligent Systems. Chiefly, removing key story and lore details to incentivize players to buy the other versions and the storyline DLCs. It compromises each game’s presentation and makes Fates look lopsided as a result.

      Conquest is also full of a lot of stupid that a lot of people can't overlook. I played Conquest first. I thought it was hard but fair. The story was ass though. The stupidity of the characters, the leaps in logic to make the plot happen, the unfulfilled specter of another enemy pulling the strings (Anakos) never being fulfilled. I could go on.
      Like I said, Birthright is as paint-by-numbers as you can get. However, it's not nearly as stupid as Conquest. This despite the Nohrian siblings having way more going for them than the Hoshido siblings in both main games.
      Birthright and Conquest were sold as a Pokemon Red/Blue situation. Where buying just one would equal playing a full game. Playing through just one exposed that more content/story was being held behind a paywall. I don't know many people who bought all 3 paths. What I do know is most people picked up Birthright over Conquest after reading and watching reviews online. That's a judgement on Conquest's presentation and appeal. I blame Intelligent Systems.

  • @bionicleanime
    @bionicleanime 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    This entry... wooo boy. So many problems but is it bad? Let's see.
    1. Splitting the game into 3 parts even though it could have been in one cartridge. I know, I have the limited edition of Fates and it's all in a single cartridge. So no, Birthright, Conquest, and Revelations did NOT need to be sold separately. Also I think Birthright and Revelations should have their routes switched because of how the story goes. Yes, the title of Birthright is a LIE
    2. The weapons system here sucks. Anything above D or C levels. Everything above only hinders you and your efforts to defeat enemies on a map. Silver weapons are the worst they've ever been. S weapons? Don't even bother. Forging? The most expensive and complicated it's ever been. Ranged weapons? Unless it's a dagger or tome, there WILL be a catch to using said ranged weapons. Lastly, negative stats for some weapons like the blessed lance? No thx.
    3. Too big of a cast! Holy emblem, not since Radiant Dawn have I been so apathetic to a large number of the cast. If they aren't underdeveloped, they're annoying stereotypes. The few that could have gotten development were sidelined or left for DLC to develop. Their ending scrolls for epilogue? Definition of rinse and repeat, especially for the females. On that note...
    4. The forced child system is just that: forced. No need to elaborate, to say more, other than it's reusing a popular mechanic from Awakening. Speaking of which...
    5. The Awakening tributes here are poorly done and lessens the impact of its story ending. 3 characters carried over from Awakening but play no real role here in Fates. Also the choices made with them don't add up. Owain is now a dark mage apparently due to his mom... even though such a class change fits Noire a lot better if she was in Fates instead. The other two? Same classes as before so what's the point?
    6. Awakening clones. Why are 3 child characters in Fates straight up clones of parent characters from Awakening? Even their names are the same, just with the letters rearranged
    7. Lots of moments in the game where it seems everything is favoring the enemy units. They can hit at low percentages, critical too while yours miss more often than not. The pair up system returns and is toned down but in return the enemy units can use it too. DLC enemies have weapons exclusive to them that made you wish you had them instead.
    8. The voice acting is ok to not good. Better than the Tellius games yes but not to Awakening quality. No dual audio doesn't help either.
    9. Story curse has the same problem as the one in RD. It's there, doesn't get properly explained, and doesn't really affect too much in the long term.
    10. This game is very pro incest. Not gonna say more than that. First FE to have LGBT relationships? Great, too bad the choices SUCK as characters.
    As you can see, very mixed bag. Is it bad though? Yes. As a follow-up to Awakening, this entry disappointed.

Disclaimer before I continue fire emblem fates Corrin can be male or female but for this blog I will be referring to Corrin as male, not only because that is the default gender but it’s adds another connection between Corrin and Christ Jesus, and I say another connection because Corrin is directly inspired by Christ himself.
    Part I: a Christ like backstory
    Now to best show Corrin’s Christ like Nature I will start as all good stories do at the beginning before Corrin was born to best see his connection with Christ.
    Long ago there was a Dragon god name Anankos made a covenant with a man named Cadros in this covenant Anankos promised to give onto Cadros and his people a great realm called Valla and to protect them as long as they remain faithful to him this is a almost direct parallel to God’s covenant with Abraham and his people, and there was great live between Anankos and the Children of Cadros(the Vallites) but just like the Israelites of the Bible the Vallites would overtime turn their back’s on Anankos forsaking their Covenant with him, and this fading trust only increased for The mind of Anankos began to fade and found himself becoming less of a benevolent god and more like a feral beast, but it was no surprise to him for he had foreseen this and so made plans to recuse mankind who from the terrible fate the would soon befall them and he did it even though some would come to hate him, and one of these plan was to divide himself into to form by removing his soul from his deteriorating body so that he could create a new body for himself so he could directly help mankind. And it’s with this new body of his that he would meet the young virgin Homonoia a princess of valla and descendent of Cadros, and she would give birth to Corrin the only begotten son of Anankos, and this is a parallel to the story of Christ as Character of Homonoia is inspired by Mary mother of Jesus as Mary was a descendant of Abraham father of Israel. Now eventually the fate that Anankos foretold had come to pass as his old body still lived and now driven only by blind rage and instinct begins destroying the land of valla. It at this time that Anankos had Homonoia and Corrin escape from Valla so that both would be able to survive similarly to how Jesus Mary and Joseph fled Bethlehem to escape herod’s wrath. After escape valla Homonoia and Corrin come to the land for Hoshido, but mother and son would not be together for long for the king of Hoshido named Sumeragi who was already married desired to have Homonoia (who by this time had changed her name to Mikoto as to hide who she really was) for himself for she was of great beauty in both body and soul, and Sumeragi would force her to become his concubine, and as for Corrin he would find himself thrown into a war between the two great Kingdoms of man the The eastern kingdom of Hoshido and the western kingdom of Nohr. This began when a exiled lord came asking for help in freeing his city from his enemy, and king Sumeragi choose to help foolishly leading his people into a seventeen year long war with the powerful kingdom of Nohr, because as soon as Sumeragi arrived at a city called cheve the Hoshidians were ambushed by the Nohrian army, and in the end The prude king Sumeragi died on his knees. By the time the battle ended the only person on the hoshidian side left standing who had not fled was a young 3 year old boy named Corrin why he was there no one knows, but this amazed the Nohrians for though he was so young he was still standing so The king of Nohr a man named Garon choose to adopt Corrin into the Nohrian royal family. For the next seventeen years little changes for Corrin but as time passes and the war grows longer Corrin vows that he will join the war so that he can end it even if it costs him his life so that the world can know peace.
    Part II:a Christ like Character
    A disclaimer before I begin the story of fire emblem fates story spits into three routes at chapter 6 these routes conquest birthright and revelation.
    Now if there is anything you should remember about Corrin is this he is kind and selfless and values both peace and mercy. The first example of Corrin’s Christ like character is chapter 2 when after defeating some Hoshidian soldiers that were ready to kill him Corrin chooses to show them mercy. Another example of Corrin’s kind and merciful nature comes in chapter 8 of conquest were after defeating the ice tribe Corrin asked the healers in his army to help both his man but also the enemies. Now most heroes are kind and merciful that is nothing new but Corrin also exemplifies the biblical rule love your enemy we can see this in chapter 11 of revelation when Corrin learns that Saizo a Hoshidian who in chapter 7 of revelation was will to sacrifice his own life just to kill Corrin is now in danger Corrin chooses to go and help him. Just thank how many heroes have been willing to put themselves at risk just to save someone who hates them? And that’s only the tip of the iceberg because in revelation everyone is against Corrin and yet he’s still willing to help them despite that. Another similarity between Corrin and Christ is both put the willing to sacrifice their lives for others this is shown in chapter 21 of revelation when faced with the reality that him and his friends are being lead into a trap Corrin decides to spring the trap alone so no one else but him is in danger. Another similarity between Corrin and Christ is one that is often known and that’s Corrin’s fate he has to kill what remains of His Father Anankos’ old body in order to save mankind and bring peace, and to any Christians this is not to dissimilar to Christ’s mission in the Bible to save mankind for our sins when he died on the cross. The last similarity between Corrin and Christ I will tell you is arguably the most important one, and that is that both despite their power and authority chooses to humble themselves and come help us humans.
    Part III: Christ like abilities
    Of all of Corrin’s abilities the most unique is that He can turn into a dragon which means he can also fly and breath fire, but like most about him most of his abilities are inspired by Christ. The first is he can walk on water and can even return from the dead you can see this and the end of chapter 27 of conquest and birthright and the start of chapter 28 of conquest and birthright. The last Christ like ability is more closer to a god like ability and that is the ability to create worlds and fill them with life as he creates many small worlds called deep realms in the game so any child born during the war can live safely.
    Conclusion
    I hope all I have said give you an idea of what kind of a character Corrin really is, because of all the hero characters in movies and games Corrin is the only one to be really Christ like in all things. Good day everyone.
