    Deacon not only wrote this song but also played the instruments in the recording including the funky lead guitar part because Brian said that wasn't a style he was used to. Live he was much more animated but he shunned the camera content to be in the background. His iconic bass lines are still employed by the current incarnation of Queen.

    John Deacon was an excellent bass player, it’s a great loss that he retired in 97. He was the secret weapon of the band, he didn’t write many songs, but they all are great. Freddie really enjoyed to sing this number and he wanted to match John's imagination so much that he sang during the recording process until his vocal cords started to bleed. Pls, check out John's Spread Your Wings, it's another vibe, a classical ballad.

    • @susieq9801
      @susieq9801 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      John wrote over a dozen great songs including some of their biggest hits and even more cowritten with Freddie. His bass lines were iconic even when simple like "Under Pressure". His bass in "Millionaire Waltz" is unbelievable. I saw them in concert and his bass blew your socks off! Some of his songs, "Friends will be friends, I want to break free, You're my best friend, You and I, Need your lovin' tonight, One year of love, If you can't beat them, In only seven days, Who needs you. I believe this song was at least their 2nd biggest seller and hit soul, black, rock, disco, just about every chart there was..

    • @davidmacfarlane1763
      @davidmacfarlane1763 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      HE wrote enough and his baselines (here, Underpressure, Dragon Attack etc) are epic. Put him with Roger and its amazing.

      @@davidmacfarlane1763 Oh yeah, they were a massive rhythm machine for just being two skinny little guys! I don't know what Roger Taylor's like now, (apart from looking like Rocker Santa,) but back then he was this aggressive little bundle of energy behind the kit, and Disco Deacy was the king of perfect hooks, custom amps, and fun moves. I understand completely why he retired from public life, but he's still easy to miss.

    • @rosemorris7912
      @rosemorris7912 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Deacy wasn't much of a singer, but he wrote two of the most memorable bass riffs in rock music. He and Freddie loved the song, while Brian and Roger absolutely hated it for the disco vibe. Thankfully, Freddie and Deacy prevailed to create the biggest US hit of their career.

    • @ellab8897
      @ellab8897 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rosemorris7912, @neuralmute - John’s singing voice was good, but being in a band with Freddie, Roger, and Brian, he understandably wasn’t confident about it. 😕 Thankfully, he was confident in his songwriting! It sure helped Freddie and Deacy prevail about ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ when Michael Jackson insisted that Queen release the song as a single. MJ knew a hit when he heard one!
      @neuralmute - I’m adding onto your fun and true description of Roger: he was this (adorably cute) aggressive little bundle of energy behind the kit.

    Those "sound effects" come from Brian May's Red Special guitar connected through a treble-booster to the Deacy Amp. Using these, Brian can produce sounds reminiscent of various orchestral instruments, such as violin, cello, trombone, clarinet, or even vocals!
    The Red Special guitar was designed and built by Brian (Queen lead guitarist) with his father when he was around 17 using mostly items they found around the May household ( i..e. old bicycle' parts were made into a tremolo, the tremolo arm is from a bicycle saddlebag holder with his mother's plastic knitting needle tip, his mother-of-pearl buttons became the frett positions inserts, and a 100-year-old wooden fireplace surround was hand formed to become the guitar neck).
    Brian's father was an electrical engineer and Brian is wicked smart - he has a Ph.D. in Astrophysics.
    The Deacy amp was built by John Deacon (Queen bass guitarist) from old radio parts he found in a trash bin. He reworked the electronics creating a guitar amplifier that he fit inside an old speaker cabinet powering it with a 9-volt battery. The amplifier had no volume or tone controls and for most of its history, it was never broken and thus never repaired. John built it to use at home to practice since he left his regular amp at Queen's rehearsal site.
    One day, John brought the amp to rehearsal to show the band, and Brian was fascinated by it. He asked to try the amp out and they were all surprised by the sounds that the combination of the Red Special guitar, treble-booster, and Deacy Amp could make. Brian used it on most of Queen's songs.
    BTW - John has a degree in electrical engineering.

    Thirteen years ago, I 'discovered' Queen and Freddie Mercury... and I have quite fortunately fallen in love with them. The day I discovered them, I couldn't pull away from my computer. I had no idea they wrote SO many songs we hear pretty much every single day. I binge-watched & listened for THREE YEARS and over the last ten years, I've still not found anything comparable to Queen & Freddie, with the exception of Lady Gaga and Garth Brooks. Believe it or not, Garth Brooks saw Freddie & Queen live and was so blown away by the charisma, that he emulated Freddie's stage presence. If you ever have the chance to check out some of Garth's live performances, you'll be shocked at how Garth runs around, and it'll scream 'Freddie' style. Welcome to the Queen club!
    *edit: Although you really can't do a reaction video with Garth Brooks' material.. he's pretty big on enforcing copyrights. For a while, it was hard to find anything on the internet!

    Great song for Freddy to prance back and forth to, and I loved every second of it back in the day.

    Great reaction but for a more funky ad-libbing version check out the live version at Wembley in 1986 .... Freddie is amazing x

    This was the original studio version that we heard frequently on the Radio and everyone my age had this vinyl.

    Sorry about all my comments...Michael Jackson was a Queen fan and told them A FEW TIMES to release this song as a single in the United States. When they finally did, it shot to #1 here in the USA and Freddie grinned and said, "Michael was right". Freddie also said that when he was 37 and Michael Jackson was 25, ...Freddie said he could learn a lot from Michael. Michael had many more years experience in the music industry....

    There is another version of this song covered by Wyclef Jean, it's good enough that Queen included it on their third greatest hits album

    Freddie and Queen were friends with Michael Jackson. MJ visited them in the studio when they were recording this and they wernt sure if they were going to put it on the album. MJ said they have got to put this song on the album, he loved it and in fact this song was the direct inspiration for Smooth Criminal.
    Queen influenced the King of Pop

    One of the first cassettes I bought for the cheap Walkman type knock off and I rode on my bike every where with it coming through the headphones.
