I love this knot. When changing leaders out on the kayak, I can quickly tie this thing in 4 foot swells on Lake Erie. I've been using it for the last 5 years now. It has never failed me.
Rich, thank you very much for taking the time to comment. One aspect of the knot that needs revision is the number of wraps needed. When I first developed the knot, braided lines were oval and not round. With the newer round lines, only 6-8 wraps are necessary. I use Fins 40G braided line. It is silky smooth, maintains its round shape and cast like a dream. I use the 5# size in chartreuse color on all my bass spinning reels (breaking strength of over 25#), 1# in the same color for crappie and dark green and blue (in various sizes) on my casting reels. This stuff is great. Oh...one other thing about the Fins 40G line...each strand is died before weaving so the color does not wear off and there are no coatings over the line so nothing smears on your guides and fingers.
I switched to this knot last week and won't be going back! It's so much smaller and tighter than either the FG or Double Uni knots that I had been using for braid to leader and has FAR superior castability to either of those. I used to have to keep a close eye on my leader knots and retie often because of friction damage from the rod eyelets. That's a non-issue with this knot and that fact alone takes a LOT of pressure off my mind when I'm on the water. Thanks for this one!!
The knot is not that difficult to tie with just a little practice. I do have an update to the video...When I first developed this knot the braided lines were more oval shape so it took many more wraps to prevent any slippage, which is the death nail to a good knot. Most new braided lines are now woven with 8 strands, making them rounder, which eliminates about half the wraps. I especially like the Fins 40G braided line. It has a central strand with 8 strands woven around it. This not only makes is very round but it also does not collapse, like some. I never use more than 7 wraps when using Fins 40G.
This knot does work for mono and fluorocarbon. When ties correctly, the small end of the knot is on the leader end which goes through the eyes first when cast. The leader is always at the end of the line and the braid is always wrapped around the leader. The braid is the main line on the reel. Thanks Mark for the comments.
Thank you so much, I did the practice and did it, very easy to do, I am always looking for smallest knot for my leaders, I am using same braid and fluorocarbon on all my combos.
Great video ! But have one question it looks like your knot is tied with your mono side toward the reel? The skinny end of knot looks like it’s the mono side not the braided side of the knot? The fat end is your braided side I think? I may be unable to see it well enough. Looks reversed. I will definitely change and start using this one . Thanks
Well, I must be totally incompetent. What I get pretty consistently is more like a softball than a carrot. I get as far as having the 15 wraps done and the wheels fall off. Right now, I'm trying with 40 lb braid to 17 lb leader. If I can do this successfully, I'll try tying the 10 lb braid to 8 lb. FC leader that I want to actually use. Any ideas where I'm going wrong?
Thanks very much for contacting me. I am sorry you are having such problems but I am pretty sure I know the problem. First off...tell me the exact brand product of braid and leader?
The main line (for practise) is 40 lb PP Super 8 Slick, and the leader I'm trying to tie to (practise) is 17 lb P-line CXX (which I'm not likely to ever buy again! Too curly for me.)
I'm not sure what to say here, but I found 3 other videos about how to tie your Dodd knot, had success with the 40/17 attempt a couple of times, then got out the rod with the 10 lb braid and tied on the 8 lb FC leader after a couple of tries. That's really small line, and my 78 year old eyeballs were not happy, even with cheaters. I would like to use my magnifier lamp, but that's downstairs and the computer screen is upstairs. Well, I've got to load the truck for tomorrow's fishing exploits. Smallmouth bass are FUN! I just hope I can get hooked up to a good one. Thank you for your speedy response to my comment, and stay safe out there!
Ragin, I developed this knot before the new 8 strand round supper slick braids hit the market. I have learned that the new slick braids only need 7 or 8 wraps, which makes the Dodd knot even more compact. I cut the tag ends off as close as possible because there is absolutely no slip. Just make sure the knot is pulled as tight as you can get it before cutting. I always use fluorocarbon “leader” and have switched to Fins braid for bass fishing. Please let me know what you think. I have never had it fail when tied correctly and you will not believe how small the knot is and it’s tapered like a bullet. Barry Dodd 210-771-0123
I use the Albright knot for fly fishing but it does not work with with small fishing lines. I tied and tested every knot I could find on the internet, including the ones the pros used. After finding that all were too big, bulky, hard to tie, would not hold or slipped and cut the line, I finally started trying to make one myself. After several months of trying modification of different knots (which is core of knots) I began tinkering around with the Albright Knot for the third or forth time. The Albright Knot just does not work for small braids and fluoro or mono because it slips. So, I began making more and more changes, kept modifying the number of wraps and finally discovered the perfect knot for connecting braid to mono or fluorocarbon. It is extremely compact, does not slip at all when pulled down tight, is shaped like a bullet, which helps it cast through the guides very easily, the tag ends an be cut a short as possible because it does not slip, and is easy to tie. Call it what every you want but I figured it out and it works better than knot I have found, to date. Thanks for the comment and noticing the Albright platform from which is the basis for the design.
@@barrydodd9034Have you tried the FG? I too have looked through 100's of videos and found the FG to be the best on a variety of line sizes. Not only for joining braid to mono but braid to braid as well. We use a heavier braid as a leader for our rock and surf fishing. Initially the FG is a pain to get used to and will take some time to master but I haven't had a failure yet. If you are using the FG for lighter line try fewer wraps. Most videos will recommend 20 to 30 wraps which is too much and will leave enough slack into the knot for the line to cut into itself when it is tensioned. I use 14 to 18 wraps on lighter line and 18 to 22 on the heavier stuff. I also use a rizutto to finish the knot. No half hitches as they tend to come loose after numerous casts. Your adaptation to the Albright certainly innovative and I'll be sure to give it a bash 👍
@@homanjj3 The FG is a great not but most believe it's harder to tie and a bit bulkier. When I designed my knot I said to use 15 wraps, which was needed on the old oval braided lines. However, with the new advancements of super braids, now I only use the new round 8 or 9 stranded slick super braids. With these new braids, 7 or 8 wraps is all that's needed and the knot is even smaller. I have told and showed lots of people the knot with fewer wraps but I just have not changed the video..my bad. I am a full time freshwater and crappie guide and sponsored by a number of companies so when fulfilling my sponsorship obligations at boat shows and other events, I get opportunities to show how to tie this knot with fewer wraps. One of the BASS pros from up north withed with me to help him with a couple specific techniques. After showing me that knot, he went back home and started showing others pros. That's really when the knot got some traction. Currently, I had a very invasive and extensive back surgery on June 19th and will not be at any more events this year. I also had to back out all planned tournaments . My goal is to be back guiding by October and hopefully fishing a few tournaments next year. Of course, that all depends on my strength, flexibility, stability and mental stability with the addition of titanium disks, rods on each side of my spine, stabilizers on each vertebrae and screws from S1 through L2. Maybe while I am down, I can update that knot video. Thanks again for watching the video and having an open mind on trying new methods. Never stop learning! Barry

What an impressive cylinder-shaped knot and it looks easy to tie. I will definitely learn how to do it
Alex Peric from AP Bassing sent me here so I could learn how to tie a knot just like him who learned the technique many years ago from you

It's actually "death knell" not "death nail".

Dude that’s pretty cool 😎 it does look like a bullet. Sweet ! Easy to remember and faster tan the FG. Thanks my good man 👍🏼

apbassing sent me here good knot
Awesome knot

Gonna give it a try although I use the FG and never had it fail but this is a faster knot

I’m gonna use this knot on half my spinning reels and fg on the other half.
What you have there is a modified Albright knot. A more complicated Albright knot.
