Probably the greatest thing to come out of MTV was unplugged. Eddie's voice was on point for this entire performance, even for him. Some channel should be doing these unplugged concerts again. It gave us some of the most memorable music from that time period.

100%. The Unplugged series from the 90s was so powerful. We eve had late 90s/00s artists doing full orchestral concerts which were phenomenal as well.
      Good times.
@ypaisley you're right about tiny desk, they're solid too for how they do it.

I was a bigger fan of the 120 Minutes program. It was responsible for putting tons of great alternative bands on my radar. I first saw Alive and Oceans there and picked up my copy of Ten shortly after.

I seen Pearl Jam back in the 90's. The one memory that remains with me to this day (I'm 58 now) was me standing there looking at Eddie thinking, 'Man, this guys voice is phenomenal'. I'm taking my son to see them in November in Sydney.

The way Eddie gets into each song, each lyric and each tone is so remarkable. But to see your facial expressions as you listen to the words and watching their intensity is why I watch you videos. Enjoy every single one 👏👏

I had just turned 23 when me and my buddies fired this up on MTV to watch with everyone else in America. All we had of them was the album and a couple of music videos. Seeing this performance somehow cemented the zeitgeist for me. Eddie sang our joys and anger. I was very aware that I was young and alive and anything was possible. What a moment.

I went to a Pearl Jam concert in 2023, and the thing that struck me the most is that in no way did they mail it in. They gave that 110% you're talking about, 31 years after this MTV Unplugged performance. I don't think they know any other way.

There’s a piece of genius in this song that I feel people miss. When he sings daddy, and makes it lilting, almost as though the mother is mocking her child’s voice. It reeks of mocking and bitterness. He is phenomenal at storytelling with inflection.

Now, imagine all of this emotion and energy coming from the stage, and then there's thousands of people connected by the music and amplifying all of it. It's one of the most amazing experiences a music fan could ever feel. Hopefully you check out the rest of their catalog and maybe, check out a show. Oh, but at the show, don't think about it, just let your mind enjoy the beauty.

7:35 That moment where Eddie’s right arm wanders and he grabs it. Also may be part of his grabbing onto the microphone. Some singers have this involuntary arm movement when they are fully committed to a song. Really interesting. He is amazing. Thank-you so much, Bethany.

Fun fact: Eddie was a nightshift clerk at a gas station when some friend give him a demo from a new band from another state and then after one of his night shifts helistened to it and went surfing (as he did every morning) and there all the lyrics to a three song "mini opera" came to him. The first song in that demo was Alive.

  • @kenkonwick6660

One of the most underrated vocalists in rock history. Dude can wail, dude can tone down softly, he puts his entire being into his voice. U cannot help but be drawn into the emotions he portrays in his voice and lyrics. Yes he muffles a lot of annunciation, but we all tend to muffle our emotions when we feel them. He just oozes depth in his performances.

    • @RealityDysfunction85

He ain't underrated bro. He is widely revered as the best rock vocalist to come out of the 90s. Ask anyone that was alive then and they will 9/10 cite Vedder as the pinnacle of rock/grunge in the 90s.

      @kenkonwick6660 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@RealityDysfunction85 completely under rated. The guy is never mentioned when people start rating their best vocalists. That ain't a bad thing. Just nears that a lot of people just dint understand the emotional talent he had. I myself don't think of Cobain as a good voice, he couldn't even stand in tge same room as Vedder. But most people will say Cobain was tge best if tge era, and that's just not true

I’ve got a cool story about Eddie Vedder. First I worked for an insurance company back in the day in the special lines field and remember actually speaking to Eddie about his boat policy! He said enjoyed calling instead of his agent! Very down to Earth and later we were able to meet at a Seattle Pearl Jam show so he was able to put a face to the voice on the phone 📱. ILL NEVER FORGET IT! RIP CHRIS CORNELL. The Seattle scene in the early 1990’s is unsurpassed by anything going on today!

Pearl Jam defined me in a way as a person I'm today. - I hope at least, it's true ;-) Listening to Pearl Jam while being with my girlfriend at that time back in the late 90's was something I will never forget. I do appreciate your "technical" or "pedagogical" analysis of the way he sings. I believe however that he is a prodigy that never thought how wide his vocal cords were open or how much air pressure he put through his cords while delivering these beautiful sounds...For me Eddie is THE MASTER in moving hearts, in touching the deepest areas of your soul and making you admire the MASTER...and cry sometime ;-)

One of the stipulations MTV had for Unplugged was for everyone to be seated, to keep the venue more intimate along with the acoustical instruments. Porch is famous for having that jam session in the middle that they play different every time, all while Eddie climbs or hangs or jumps off camera rigging. Credit to Eddie for technically staying in his chair for it during Unplugged while simultaneously breaking the rule by standing on it, and Jeff by standing on the kick drum (the floor is lava!)

oh man, i love seeing someone react to those videos that so much were part of me being a teenager. i have this on vhs (cannot throw it away) and watched it so many times back then. and i havent since. so it feels amazing to see it now with someone who clearly appreciates it as well! i am so surprised you did not watch the whole unplugged show after reacting to Black! :)
ps: the stone temple pilots unplugged from the same time was amazing as well!

Such a great concert. One of my early bands played a lot of the unplugged sets of Pearl jam, Stone temple pilots, Nirvana, Alice in chains and REM.
    They were all so good.

The song that got me into Pearl Jam. After all these years. The song that got me into grunge ( my best style ever). Like music, like soul

I got to see them live in NY City at a night club. Totally unannounced and very few people knew they would be there. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life back then. I've been to a lot of concerts, but something about a private concert is just special and seeing Eddie Vedder up close, singing songs I was familiar with but had not really paid much attention to at the time, blew me away.

Hey Bethany… I LOVE your videos and every time I learn from your vocal expertise…Forgive me but I think you've missed two critical things with this song and performance: 1) acknowledging the powerful story and meaning of the lyrics and 2) please go again to 8m27s and watch Eddie's face for 10 seconds…He's not just singing a song, he's performing the emotions of the lyrics (you could call it the libretto!)…He is acting the emotion behind the lyrics with his face and body…It's not just incredible vocal execution…Just masterful.

The best MTV Unplugged. The little changes Vedder makes to melodic vocal lines from the album are all improvements imho. Great stuff. :)

The most amazing thing is that he sounds like this while sitting on a barstool.
