There was a time when songs did not need huge production and artifacts. When all a song needed was a singer, a stool, a guitar …and a story.

This is from the BBC in the UK. Back in the 70s, the BBC sound engineers were the best in the world, so the sound quality here is excellent. Really brings out just how good Neil is. This is hands down the best recording of Old Man. Pure gold. From the same period, there is a James Taylor recording (again from the BBC) of “You’ve Got A Friend” delivered as a pure acoustic performance. This is also the best recording of that song. Both are examples of just how great both men are as songwriters. It was just a guitar and natural talent.

Two of my favorite albums were both BBC sessions from Led Zeppelin & Jimi Hendrix. At times they did some prerecorded backing vocals & played the rest live to capture more of the album sound. It was a nice blend of studio layers & live spontaneity.

I love this intimate performance with just Neil & his guitar (harmonica). He was only 27 when he recorded this song as a young man. Now he is an older man at 78 years old. Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. The albums "After The Gold Rush" & "Harvest" from the 70's are considered 2 of his best.

I enjoyed hearing this song from the old man’s view. I hear the words now and they have meaning to me.
Neil Young takes your mind on a journey in this song; makes one think about where they are in life and relatable. When we’re young we feel the music; i.e. feelings of joy, sadness, love, anger, inspiration are a few of the feelings that are amplified as we go through life’s incredible moments. My music teacher in college used the term “bathing in the music”. The feeling of being in love for the first time, we want to “bath” in a song that takes that feeling to another, higher level.
As a man now at the other end of life, I hear the words written; the music is more of a walk down memory lane of moments we felt so strongly decades ago. Longing for those days that were filled with the hope of a well lived life and the excitement of what’s to come.
Thank you again for giving us the tools to appreciate music we may have otherwise overlooked.
I hope you’re doing well and wish you much success! 🙂

Of course I can’t know your experience, but when he started to play, your face looked exactly the way I feel whenever I hear this song. Neil Young is The MAN. Seen Mr. Young live four times, and each show was completely different, in format, in set list and in his backing bands. Although, Crazy Horse was a part of two of the shows. One of the greatest things about Neil is his variety of music, from a solo voice with a Guitar or Piano, to full on Rock and Roll, after all he is known as "The Godfather Of Grunge". I was 21 when this song came out and first heard it on a 24-hour non-stop drive with a car full of buddies from Cleveland to Miami for Spring Break. It was so popular we'd hear it on almost every station as we drove south through the range of their radio signal. Now I'm the old man, almost 74, and hearing it from the opposite perspective. It continues to be a great song, but now heard with a life's worth of experience to make it even more meaningful. Neil Young's great song writing and imperfect voice are what make his songs perfect.

Yet another fantastic analysis. Thanks for helping us all appreciatge music on an even deeper level. I just told a friend yesterday that I'd 'listened' to a certain song probably 100 times in my life, but 'heard' it for the first time earlier that day. I credit that to you. Thanks, once again, Bethany.

I was learning to play guitar just before Harvest came out. I wore out the record playing it over and over to learn the songs. I still perform this song and Heart of Gold almost every gig. Neil Young has been a huge influence.

Somehow, I've never heard this performance. I'm so used to the studio version, with the vocal harmonies and the additional instrumentation, that this was an absolute revelation. Thank you for sharing it!

I actually was lucky enough to Watch Neil Young record In Studio at Capitol Records in Hollywood. We were shooting a TV series that I was an assistant director on. We were shooting in the below ground studios they are famous for. We asked Our liaison for Capitol if anyone would be coming in that day while we were shooting our scripted series, and he said that yes. That someone would be for a short time and that we would have to make some concessions for an our or two while he was there. Turns out it was Neil Young. Also turns out he gets a little nervous about being in these studios with the doors closed. We were shooting in a different room down an old checkered tile hallway and had to take small breaks and remain entirely quiet while he recorded. Our crew obliged this request and it was one of those rare moments where you got to see “magic” happening. We were all used to making our own “magic” in film and TV. But like everyone, we all love music and this was outside our own wheelhouse. After a couple hours he was gone and we were back to work as usual. I’ll admit that I’m not a huge fan of his. I can admire his work and enjoy his other collaborations with Crosby and Stephen Stills and graham nash. But it was still a treat to watch this man work. Love your reviews. Love the deep insights. I used to work in Record Stores decades ago before I worked into film. So getting these more technical breakdowns of the music and craft enriches the medium. Thank You and keep up the great work!

It's a very dreamy and melancholy song. It's easy to drift off and imagine the images that Neil Young was expressing. His voice is original and captivating.

Always have loved this song, but bittersweet for me, as I was 17 years old at the time, and this was a big song during my senior year in high school. I cannot believe so many decades have passed!❤🎉 It still sounds beautiful.

Love Neil and love your reaction. Unknown Legend, Heart of Gold, Cortez the Killer, The Needle and the Damage Done - just a few great songs to choose from for your next NY reaction. One day you'll have to watch his Rust Never Sleeps movie. It's half acoustic, half grungy rock and roll. It's a blast.

Neil Young isn't blessed with the richest voice, but he has an incredibly expressive voice. I love this song and remember when I was 24 and heard that line, "24 and there's so much more." Indeed there was, Neil. The depth of the song comes from the depth of his soul and life's experiences. We all need love, old and young, Thanks for reminding me of this great song and performance.
