“I know some day you’ll have a beautiful life. I know you’ll be a star….. in somebody else’s sky….but why, why, why can’t it be mine?!” Probably some of the most poetic and touching lyrics I’ve ever heard.
This is by far my favorite reaction to this song. Seeing you go from technically dissecting his voice to being sucked in emotionally by the song brought so much joy to my heart. Made the tears well up for me too. Excellent analysis and reaction!
I was giggling and teary eyed at the same time seeing you holding back your tears :) ...now you've experienced the "Black Experience" we pj fans have already felt for 30 years. :)
Your silence and eyes at the last part of the song tell a whole story. This song has something in it for everyone, and it sure has for me. Great reaction. Finland has some awesome bands btw, namely Shape of Despair. PS: Finnish sounds like Elvish and I love it.
I love that you went from analyzing vocals, to completely emotionally invested. Its ok to get teary, its ok to cry. This performance hits so hard. Its a masterpiece!
I've seen SO many grown adults (men and women) moved to tears by this performance...that if someone were to watch this for the first time and NOT be moved, I'd wonder if they had a soul. Thanks for reacting to one of the single best live performances ever recorded. ~Be Blessed
On a side note, you bring up a very prescient point, that you can feel the truth and realness in the song and in his singing. It was that very thing that helped move rock music from the unreal glam metal days of the late 80’s/early 90’s, to this type of music, or grunge to some. We had had our fill of the partying music and was craving the realness, truthfulness and heartbreak of what was to come in the 90’s. Thanks for your reaction.
This coming from someone who was never much of a Pearl Jam fan, but this performance completely changed my view of Eddie’s vocals and the band in general. I don’t think I’ve seen many performers so invested in the lyrics and actually reliving the emotions that drove them to write the song in the first place. And we can all relate to these feelings and the hopelessness and frustration that Eddie showed in this performance. I really do believe that this is one of the best live vocal performances ever. It definitely got to me!
You're a poet!!! "Eddie's voice flew so emotionally and beautifully over that rocky fabric. Very touching and raw. It was very beautiful and unadorned at the same time, if one can say that." Excellent description! 🙏
Watching someone listen to this song for the first time is something I’ve never experienced before, and my own initial experience happened over 30 years ago, but seeing the unbridled emotion that was brought out of you made me feel that very emotion that Black brought out of me all those years ago. That’s pretty amazing- for music and voice and lyrics to have that power. I’ve never seen your content before watching this video tonight- just happened to show up as a recommendation in my google feed. So, I don’t know how your videos typically play out but it was moving to see the emotion that this version in particular is able to invoke.
Eddie’s delivery is always emotional and touching, never technical. And that makes him uniques 🙏🏻 great reaction as always🙏🏻💫 next from PJ, can be their music video to “Jeremy” 🔥🔥🔥
One of the greatest live performances ever recorded! Love it!... Anna, your analysis was wonderful as usual as you are clearly moved by the song on an emotional level, yet you're still able to break down what's going on with the vocals with your keen observations! For further Pearl Jam possibilities, I would highly recommend "Jeremy" either from this same unplugged session or the original (and quite controversial) music video.... Even Flow is another great one with the original music video really showcasing Eddie's acrobatics on stage in concert....
Listening to a reaction in Finnish (my mother's language) to one of the most iconic PJ songs put me in a trance of sorts....and hits all sort of feelings.....
I’ve come back to this reaction so many times, not only because I love this song so much… but it does something to see the human reaction to such powerful and relatable lyrics.. to see the real emotion hit you… it feels like I’m hearing it for the first time again. In my opinion, this performance of “Black” is one of the best live songs of all time. I love all of your reactions! Just awesome:)
I really love your material! Your mix of English/Finnish is perfect! I think the fear of losing English speaking engagement drives many creators to eschew their native language for several reasons, but I think we lose a good deal of genuine character in folks who might struggle to translate in the moment their fullest thoughts.
Wonderful reaction Anna! Loved your analysis of Eddie’s voice and making the sounds he makes as the song progressed. I remember seeing this when it first played on MTV and thought it was the most amazing performance ever. Over 30 years later I still think Black Unplugged is the best performance ever.
Eddie has that ability to just bring out emotions in people. When I saw them back in 2005 they played 35 songs. The recording is on TH-cam and man that was a great concert. The night after was Tom Petty and the Black Crows at the same venue so or course I had to both. It was one hell of a weekend.
I’ve watched so many reactions to this song, and nobody has encapsulated my own emotions as well as you. Many miss or don’t mention certain things I wish they would notice. You understood the heartbreak and poetry of the lyrics… truly moving. New subscriber
One of my all time favorites to watch a reaction to is THIS SONG!!! So powerful! ...and you are at the top! Most beautiful reaction! When you can cry and still look Beautiful is Impressive! ❤
Perfect reaction! Sometimes you just need to listen and feel the intent of the artist. I love listening to vocal coaches reactions. But watching anyone to listen and feel is something special. I watched every minute afterwards.
I come back to this reaction of yours often. One, because this is such a beautiful song and I don’t think they’ve ever topped this performance of it. Two, sometimes I miss my ex and need to feel something, and three I really enjoy your very human reaction to it. I always get a little bit of a lump in my throat at the same time when you start to tear up because of the lyrics.
Raw emotion and "imperfect" power unleashed in singing delivers a relatable experience for listeners (me). You said it all in the beginning. "Hey, I'm human too" Let's relate.. It's what attracts me to soulful and bluesy vocalists/musicians. Good to see you, Anna :)
So sad I missed the premiere. But I definitely have to comment here. I have watched hundreds of reactions and analysis videos of Pearl Jam's "Black" and you have made a masterpiece. No one has come close to the level of what you have presented in your video. You gave so much technical information with a perfect balance of human emotion and understanding of Eddie and Pearl Jam's music. I was truly astounded at how much you gave us with your analysis. You touch on so many things that other so called "professionals" miss. I am so happy to have found your channel. Thank you Anna!
Eddie's voice is one of a kind. You know who it is from the moment you hear it. But, Pearl Jam is a sum of all the parts. He is still one of my favorite male vocalists. Great job, Anna, you have a new fan, for life.
I'd have pretty much passed off Pearl Jam as another Indie Rock band from the USA except for Eddie's singing style and ability to get the emotion of the lyrics across so well. My favourite tune by them is probably not the most popular but is well known all the same. It's called Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town, it always touches me when I listen to it. Cheers Dave.
It's amazing how much a man can love a woman and when that's over he writes a beautiful poem full of emotions that can make your skin jumpy and they dress it up with wonderful music and at the end they performed like that. Thanks Anna for your true emotional reaction. Greetings from Greece.
Anna, I loved your reaction and feedback, as well as professional insight. And Finnish is such a beautiful language, listening to it is somehow soothing.
Here is Eddie's take on the songs meaning: "The song is about letting go." "It's very rare for a relationship to withstand the Earth's gravitational pull and where it's going to take people and how they're going to grow. I've heard it said that you can't really have a true love unless it was a love unrequited. It's a harsh one, because then your truest one is the one you can't have forever." Amazing reaction as always Anna! ❤
@@AnotherFacelessDigitalNoOne Indeed it is! I went to look up his interview that he gave about Black and I know he mentioned an ex and it being a very personal song to him. But I had never seen this quote before. Very deep and to me gives even more meaning to the song. :)
This came out when I was in high school. Pearl jam, Nirvana, Alice in chains. All amazing bands. Pearl jam being my favorite, his voice and lyrics have a lot of emotion, raw emotion and it touches you. I love your accent by the way😊
Eddie reminds me of Floor Jansen in the fact that in the Studio they are exceptional but put them in front of an audience the fireworks start. That both have voices you not only hear but feel! Great reaction ! Pretty sure I saw some tears welling up 😉 Always love your reaction analyses
Well I'm late to the party, I know. I saw your reaction to this a while back but a lot of people were reacting to it at that time, so I skipped it and then eventually forgot about it 🙄 I love Pearl Jam, more precisely his way of singing and his voice. But this here is a masterful performance, he's using so much diverse things with his singing and the pain simply oozes out of his voice. He's really narrating his pain here, for lack of better words. If it's such a joy for my untrained ears, I can only imagine what it means for someone like you.
Eddie forgot the lyrics on the second verse. The one time it was being recorded live . 😢 love eddie vedder and pearl jam seen them live many times . First was at Wrigley field in Chicago front stage awesome day that was .

You're really putting out there the best reactions on YT 😮 Lot of emotions, super interesting analyzes.. wow ! It would be amazing to see you react to Porch from the exact same session... one of the best live moment in my opinion
I’ve seen so many reactions to this song. Yours is just raw and vulnerable. To sit inside the song with Eddie and feel his pain. This is so gorgeous. Thank you 🙏
That look on your face , the last minutes of the song... you truly get it. Bravo, Anna. Most listeners don’t grasp the depth of the lyrics or the intensity that they are sung.
At 5:17, the way Eddie sings the word "cradle" is just incredible, ive commented on it before but I'll skip back just to hear that section over and over again. It's coming from such a soulful place it's intoxicating. The STP unplugged performance where they switch up the energy on the second verse of the song Creep also lives on repeat in my end. Hell of a time for music the 90s were. Love the analysis, you rock 🤘
I wrote a paper on this song, after listening to it many, many times, you understand he’s singing about a deep depression after a breakup. It still makes me tear up every time I hear it
Happy new year everone. This band is one of my alltime teenage favorites, which brings back a lot of memories. I remember a lot of girls in school had a crush on Eddie and also the sad accident at that concert in Roskilde. 😭 That song is among the most heartbroken music I know. Thank you. :)
I agree. Some music just hits you in the guts or makes you think about things, good or bad, and sometimes make you cry. Sadly it's becoming harder and harder to find new music you WANT to be in your head for the rest of your life... It's out there but it's not easy to find it.
Wonderful reaction! Eddie has opne of the most expressive voices around. An often overlooked masterpiece is his cover of "Masters of War" at the Bob Dylan tribute concert. It is simply a Mandolin and his voice. Perfection! Thank you from Northern California.
Can't tell you how much I like your reactions to this. You are well aware of vocal technique, etc and make great observations. But you do not let that overshadow the raw emotion Eddie puts into this. One of my favorite reactions and one of my favorite performances.
This one still gets me emotional every time I hear it!! Even though I heard it 10,000 times since it aired. That because eddies performances was flawless. Still is my favorite version of Black
Good evening, from Colorado. 1st time listener to your channel. This is such an incredible song and performance; it is probably my most listened to reaction song. Loved the part where Eddie took Anna's breath away and she forgot she was doing a reaction. 😗

Have an awesome rest of your week.
Such a perfect reaction. Hi😊
Thank you! :)
Love the tears. Great review.
You have the best reaction to this performance, in my opinion. It's especially impressive that it's your second language.
You have a beautifully Kind soul, bless you for sharing.
Saw a clip of your reaction on tiktok and had to find the full version.
I haven't listened to Pearl Jam in years and totally forgot about this live version of the song and it brought me to tears. Thanks for your reaction and a safe space to feel emotional.
