Fun facts about the 2010 Mariners: They were the first 100 million dollar team to lose 100 games.
I remember they were a trendy black horse choice for the AL West, a roster built on pitching and defense that played its home games in one of the most pitcher-friendly parks. I even picked them to win the division.
Instead, Figgins and Griffey flopped hard, Cliff Lee pitched the Rangers into the World Series and Ichiro started to age. Oh, and jettisoned third baseman Adrian Beltre revitalized his Hall of Fame career.

@WarlordofBritannia Actually that was the 2008 Mariners who became the first to lose a 100 games with a $100 million payroll.
But I never believed in that 2010 team cause I knew they weren’t gonna hit.
Zduriencik relied way too highly of the young guys.
He relied way too highly on veterans past their prime like Griffey, Eric Byrnes, Milton Bradley.
Casey Kotchman was not going to replace the 2009 version of Russell Branyan at first base.
There was completely no depth at catcher going into the year other than Rob Johnson and Josh Bard.
And the worst one was they thought they could replace the production of Adrian Beltre with an aging Chone Figgins.

    • @jasondousett3620
      @jasondousett3620 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wait a second... Strasberg lost a year due to TJ surgery, still wouldn’t have helped Felix & the Mariners. Plus he wouldn’t have stayed long term with Seattle (although would WS garnered a huge return in a trade).

    • @yoguidude

Yeah, Imagine if Strasburg was with the Mariners in the 2014 season when they missed the playoffs by one game.
They would have made it to the post season for sure with him and Felix!
Who knows who could've happened with that 1-2 punch in the playoffs.
Now the Nats are World Champions (Congrats btw!)
and the M's are in full rebuilding mode slated to losing for the next 3-4 years, and on top of that they are the only team left without a World Series appearance and the longest post season drought in all sports.

Interesting video. One problem here is that the premise works on the assumption that the Mariners would have selected Strasburg with the first pick in the draft. It's entirely possible the M's would have chosen someone else. Who knows, maybe both teams would've passed over him, as Scott Boras was his agent, and was known to drive a hard bargain. Still, it's interesting...

Ackley was basically the consensus number 2 pick for most analyst and he was considered a sure thing to hit, it was mostly the Mariners development at the time that could not get through. But Mariners fans will probably forever shudder at the missed opportunity for the top pick in the 09 draft.

As a Mariner's fan, I didn't think I'd end my day hating Bettencourt of all players, but here I am, now full of hate.

I thought the number one pick was given to the worst team in the NL that year. Like i thought it switches every year

If that were the case, the Nationals wouldn’t have gotten back to back #1 picks

Sized Flame the Astros also got back to back #1 picks in 2012 and 2013. If it was the NL’s turn in 2009, they wouldn’t have had either. They were in the NL in 2012 (AL’s turn) and the AL in 2013 (NL’s turn)
