You want another butterfly effect in sports? How about Moses Malone? He was the property of the New Orleans Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers, Buffalo Braves, and Houston Rockets before he played three NBA games. The transactions led, directly or indirectly, to the Lakers getting Magic Johnson, the Celtics getting Larry Bird, and the Rockets getting Hakeem Olajuwon. That’s 10 championships and one league-saving era. In fact, if the Blazers kept Malone, they may have had the first and third picks in 1983 and the first and second picks in 1984. Imagine the Blazers with Ralph Sampson, Rodney McCray, Olajuwon, and That Jordan Fellow with those picks.

Torrie Hunters catch that robbed a home run against Bonds in the 2002 all star game caused the game to be stopped at 7 all in extra innings when both teams ran out of pitchers.
Because of this bud selig the commissioner decided that from then on the All-Star Game would decide home-field in the World Series.
If not for that, the Cardinals in 2011 don't have home field in game 6 and the SF Giants I 2014 might not have been able to pitch Madison Bummgardner for as long as they did in game seven because they were in the KC and didn't have to worry about pitch hitting for him in a 1 run game!🤯🤯🤯🦋🦋🦋

The thing to really bake your noodle is that while that small decision (Bartman's) DID have a big impact on that game, if it is true that small decisions make huge impacts, then everyyyyy small decision leading to the 2016 championship must be equally evaluated. For example, the pitch selection in the bottom of the third inning of game 2. Those decisions also have an impact on the outcome of the inning/game/series and arguably MORE of an impact than Bartman's ever could simply due to the proximity of those decisions with the result of the championship.

Here’s a real Butterfly Effect you.
In 1964, the Pittsburgh Pirates signed an amateur free agent named Al Oliver. He helped contribute to the 1971 World Series championship Pirates team. After the 1977 season, he was traded to the Rangers for Bert Blyleven and John Milner. They helped the 1979 Pirates win their 5th World Series. However, Blyleven didn’t get along with manager Chuck Tanner and after the 1980 season, he was traded to the Indians for a grab bag of nothing. Blyleven continues to have success with the Indians for the next four and a half season until August of 1985 when he’s traded to the Twins, going to Cleveland is a shortstop prospect named Jay Bell. But by 1989, the Indians had decided to trade him to the Pirates for Felix Fermin. Bell finally lived up to his ability in Pittsburgh and was the centerpiece shortstop on three straight division winners for the Pirates in 1990-92. The next four seasons he’s the star on a bunch of bad Pirates teams, after the departure of some bigger names, Jay Bell along with Jeff King are traded to the Royals for Joe Randa. Randa has a good 1997 season as the starting 3B in Pittsburgh and he looks like the guy for the Pirates at 3B until Aramis Ramirez is ready. However, the Pirates leave Randa unprotected in the expansion draft and they lose him. Now with no real 3B, the Pirates rush Aramis Ramirez to the big league club. The 19 year old clearly isn’t the player they expect him to be someday, but they are now using up his pre-free agent years. He finally figures it all out in 2001 and his first year of arbitration is 2003. But at the same time, the Pirates waste a lot of money on bad contracts and ownership forces the GM to dump salary. So Ramirez is traded to the Cubs along with Kenny Lofton. They provide the Cubs with enough help to get them to beat the Astros in the division race by one game and they go to the playoffs where Bartman happens. Also on the 2003 Cubs team? Moises Alou, who the Pirates had traded in 1990 for Zane Smith who helped shore up their rotation for a playoff push. Alou ends up in Chicago after spending time with the Expos, Marlins and Astros.

ummm not the same fate. They were both hated and made out to be villains but Buckner got a city wide apology (not that that negates anything) and the Red Sox went on to win 3 more WS in relatively short amount of time. But Chicago was just terribly nasty Bartman. Sure they offered him a ring in 2016 but how tf does a ring make up for ruining your life. Especially considering her was one of nearly a dozen people all trying to catch the ball. He had to move and his life was changed forever. Buckner, even though also had to move, was a professional baseball player with a decent career under his belt. He had a little bit more money and he was used to fans giving him shit. When we look back on Buckner's life there are many aspects to talk about and remember that happened before his infamous moment in '86. Bartman on the other hand was just a fan and the whole baseball world came down on him hard and it's the only event people can attach to his name. Quite frankly, these two incidents are why I'll never root for either team. As far as I'm concerned both guys didn't deserve the backlash and both cities should still feel like shit for how they treated him. It's just a f***ing game.

Or how about Freeman Williams? The Celtics took him with the eighth pick in the 1978 NBA Draft. Before then the pick was involved in a trade that saw the Jazz relinquish the rights to Moses Malone and trade the pick the Lakers would use to take Magic in 1979. The Lakers then traded that pick to the Celtics along with Kermit Washington after his infamous punch of Rudy Tomjanovich. By getting that pick the Celtics arguably had more flexibility to draft Larry Bird at 6 even though he wouldn’t play for the Celtics for another year since he had college eligibility left.
After drafting Williams the Celtics then traded him to the San Diego Clippers in a deal in which both owners swapped franchises. Williams was then traded in 1981-82 from the Clippers to the Hawks for Al Wood. That was a relatively boring trade, but it set the stage for the Hawks trading Williams and John Drew to the Jazz (feel like we’ve gone full circle here) for the rights to the Jazz first round pick in 1982 (#3 overall), which was...wait for it...Dominique Wilkins.

I always wondered why Baker didn't pull Prior sooner. He did have options though. He could have brought in Zambrano to pitch. You have to put it all on the line when you are that close to a title. These days, managers wouldn't hesitate to use every pitcher available.

Yea except managers also get shit when they pull the starting pitcher for the bullpen as well. Just look at Jim Leyland’s pull of Max Scherzer in game 2 of the 2013 ALCS,

We were leave church, my mother suggested we turn left and go out the front door to the car. I suggested we go in for coffee. I met my wife who ended up ruining my life. All I had to do was make a left turn or go to another church.

When I was 4, I went to my first baseball game - AAA team Fresno Grizzlies. There was a foul ball hit RIGHT at me and I caught it! Right after I caught it, this complete asshole adult straight up ripped the ball out of my hands and never gave it back. I was disheartened and, 22 years later, I have yet to even come close to catching a foul ball at any baseball game. I’m so stoked to see the Butterfly Effect video made about that.

    Butterfly Effect Video Idea
9/11 made Tom Brady the GOAT.
If 9/11 doesn't happen, the following week doesn't get postponed by the tragedy.
The week 17 games don't get rescheduled for the following week.
The following week Drew Bledsoe is tackled by Mo Lewis out of bounds injuring him.
Tom Brady steps in and leads the team to the playoffs, their first Super Bowl title, and everything that comes after it...
    all because of 9/11.

I blame baker 100% for that collapse. He left Prior in for way to to long. Never went out and calmed him down or anything. He took a world championship caliber team and turned them into a 100 loss team in 2 years. How he ever got another job in baseball is mind boggling.

  • @guyincognito320

Bartman got a large amount of borderline credible death threats for a solid year after this. That shows what kind of goons Cub fans are. This whole inning was a laugh riot. They had Prior and Wood at home, needing a lone W, and got smoked in both games. It's one thing to lose or to choke, but the full aesthetic significance of this meltdown reaffirmed why I never stuck with this team when I was young, quickly turning to the White Sox at age 10 or so. There are those who detest failure, and those who write poems about it.
There's always been an aura of underachievement about this team, but the fans act as if their team's historical quirks and aesthetics are elemental aspects of the game. To them it's not merely good, but 'good for baseball' if they should win a pennant. Who thinks like this? Who but a solipsistic man-child considers his sports anxiety in terms of some broader cultural horizon?

Superstitious fans would say that the championship drought that began in 1908 was due to the "Merkle's boner" play, specifically Evers orchestrating the charge for Cubs players to beat up a Giants fan in the Polo Grounds outfield and wrestle the ball from his hands, then throw the ball to Evers and tag Merkle out for not touching second base.
That was a bad vibe dick move (Evers was a notoriously sour man) that won them a tiebreaker replay Game 155, by all accounts incredibly rowdy and vulgar and bubbling with potential violence from the 1st inning onward, which the Cubs won and would go on to defeat the Tigers in the World Series.
The baseball gods did not approve of this behavior, so they punished the team for 108 years for this unseemly behavior.
    Superstitious fans would say.

They’re lineup was insanely good, and some of the greats have left including:
Dexter Fowler: he went to the cardinals
Ben Zobrist: retired after 2019 season
Addison Russell: was cut from the team after 2019 season and is now playing for a Korean baseball team
Miguel Montero: was cut from team after he criticized jake arrietas pitching
Aroldis Chapman: was mad that he didn’t get enough pitching time in the World Series, signed with Yankees
David Ross: retired after World Series win and is now the cubs general manager
A handful of pitchers signed with a different team such as: Pedro strop, Travis wood, jake Arietta, Carl Edwards jr, and a few others
A few bench players also signed with other teams: Chris denorfia, Chris coghlan, Jorge soler, tommy la stella and others
If the young players on this list never left the cubs, the cubs would be so good this season, especially since Baez has been working on hitting and now has so much power and strikes out a lot less and all of the hitters in the lineup are hitting well this season so far
Imagine if Addison Russell was on the cubs this season, the second base/shortstop combo was insane with him and javy baez
And the versatility of Chris coghlan is like no other, he could play any position that he needed to, except pitcher of course
And the hitting accuracy of tommy la Stella makes him the perfect pinch hitter late in the game
All of the cubs pitchers that year were so good, even the bullpen that struggled in the beginning of the season, they had pitchers that could hit so good, that they played left field once
There are no words to describe how good this team was, and they were so good in every category of the game
