      The Molex power connector worked for decades just fine...quite contrary to the only some years old SATA power connector which is as fragile and flimsy as SH!T...I hate that connector with a passion.

    • @gbotman1212
      @gbotman1212 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Sata has a total of 9 power pins 3 x 3.3v 3 x 5v and 3 x 12v which can all draw 1,5amps each, molex has a single 12v which can draw 11 amps. The pcb gets easier for NZXT when using molex, because they only have to step down a single 12v to 5v to power the circuit and the connected led-strips. If they would have used sata, they had to use multiple step-up and step-down converters (3.3v to 5v and 12v to 5 volts). Also each LED consumes about 60mA when emitting white light, so 6 x 40 LEDs would consume about 72 watts which is the maximum of the 5v and 12v power rail combined (SATA). To power the whole circuit they need some more, so the 3.3v rail needs to be stepped up to 5v which make the pcb more complex, therefore more expensive.

      Ok... So just use pcie 6 pin instead. If you have spare power, it's a better connector, and if you don't, molex to 6pin is trivial to get. Molex plug sucks in durability, tolerance, and the possibility of accidentally plugging it in backwards.

      If you have a modular power supply you have to put three feet of usless molex cable in the case just for the HUE. I have a HUE+ and I ghettoed in an old molex connector on a SATA power cable. Two power harnesses instead of three was way worth it.

    You can probably use a cylindrical file to widen the comb's slots a little to allow for thicker cables to fit more easily. Though this would probably make it have trouble getting a grip on thinner cables if you planned to mix or re-use them on another setup.

      Or use the adhesive strips to stick the LEDs to some cheap fridge magnets and strap that to your rig lol

    • @RyTrapp0
      @RyTrapp0 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is that this is a balancing act with adhesives like this. First, let's start out by noting that 3M doesn't make "an" adhesive strip or even "a few" types of adhesive strips - they make HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS(it's been a bit since I've checked out one of their commercial/vendor catalogs - I assure you, they're kind of fucking HUGE. Eat your heart out McMaster-Carr) of different types of adhesive strips alone, with varying levels of adhesion, specific adhesive formulations for special use cases, backing material, some levels of reusability even, etc. So the supplier here isn't the problem, it's largely that a basic requirement of products like these is that they need to be removable in the future without damaging the finish of what it's attached to, and ideally with a minimal amount of residue left over. Obviously failing at both of those would just kill a product like this. And, of course, adhesiveness and removability with minimal damage are almost opposites, so it essentially becomes a tight rope of "do we choose a strip with a stronger adhesive to GUARANTEE that our product will at least stick like it should, but at risk of potentially damaging an enamel/powder coat/raw/whatever finish", or "do we err on the side of caution and choose a weaker adhesive to minimize any possibility of brand reputation harm that could result from selling people a product that may very well damage their case".
      And, it should go without saying that this is something to keep in mind should you be looking for an alternative to what they've used - there certainly is no PERFECT adhesive out there that will stick like super glue yet come right off without issue when it's time. They would otherwise be using it if there was of course.
      All that said, I'd agree that hot glue is pretty ideal here - should hold MUCH better(as long as you don't fuck with it after applying), while posing pretty much ZERO risk(don't use the high temp stuff, common sense here) to the products that it's being applied to. I'm sure NZXT would be more than happy to offer that as their adhesive of choice if it were actually feasible too, this is pretty much what it's perfect for.
      Also, just like painting, surface cleanliness is CRITICAL regardless of the type of adhesive

    A couple of things. The adhesive is not the problem. You need to clean what ever you apply it to with isopropyl alcohol and wait for it to dry before applying the tape. Next, they should really make the power cable detachable and include a SATA plug and a molex plug. Lastly, you didn't actually address the piece of information that I wanted to hear about. What does the software look like? Does it allow you to create your own lighting modes? Is it buggy? Would you buy it? Anyway, thanks for the review.

If all the RGB makers could decide on one format to use so that when I buy from various vendors I do not have to run 5 different RGB software and try to match things up. One unified software that works with all makes of RGB would make me more interested and I would bling out my system more. Great video Kyle and thanks for the honest review.

    This lighting kit is pretty SIC! Wish I could even afford that LOL. Anyway, I have kind of a long post for you Kyle (and Lyle) which I'm going to apologize for in advance, since I have posted it on several other of my favorite TechTubers' comments sections. I just want as much advice from as many of you guys as I can get. Anyway, here goes : Since last October, so wow, like a year now, I have been physically ill, my body is shutting down, weak, liver failing, etc. etc. sad story sad story, and doctors can't seem to figure out why (Right before this happened, I quit my job to go back to school, so the shitty free insurance probably has a lot to do w/ it). Well, not trying to make this a sad story or anything, but to make a long story short, for the last year I have had ZERO income, and am trying to come up w/ ways to do something w/ PC's to at least support myself somewhat. I have no camera or microphone, so TH-cam is out (and very hard to get started on that anyway), but being physically unable to do anything, PCs and gaming have been the only thing that's been keeping my mind and more importantly my spirit and attitude going (and not gonna lie, my 1070 Ti has been giving me some issues [and even RMA'ing that to EVGA, shipping from Hawaii through UPS and having them package it all good and get insurance can easily run $100 or even more, so yeah, Hawaii shipping sucks], so a new video card is a small part of the motivation to make money too :P ). I want to somehow start building custom PCs and maybe sell them on Craigslist or Ebay or something, since there's not too much of that here in Hawaii, and that is basically ALL I CAN physically do at this point. Thing is, it's incredibly hard to do that when you have ZERO startup cash lol. I was just wondering your thoughts and your experience, since you've been in the industry awhile, are on my current situation, and maybe you can give me some tips and/or advice on how to get started? Do you know of anywhere that gives away old PC parts or unused PC parts free instead of just junking them? It's pretty sad, I enter like every single giveaway of PC stuff I can find on TH-cam and VastGG and stuff like that haha. But yeah, any advice from someone like you would be greatly appreciated! I'm more interested in building and selling than in doing TH-cam or something like that. I mean, even if there's nothing going on, I just take my PC apart, clean it (even if it's already sparkling clean), and put it back together, just because, I guess I just love building that much. This past year really has been a rough one for me, and I'd like to try to support myself in this way or in any way I can, I just have no clue where to get started when I don't have any start up cash and am physically unable to work. Any advice from you, or even anyone in comments, would be greatly appreciated! And please don't take this the wrong way, I'm not begging or asking anyone for handouts, just some advice and maybe places for me to start. Will probably copy and paste this on some other TechTuber channels too, so sorry to people who may see this in other places too. Thanks for your time!

    On Amazon you can buy a 5m addressable RGB led strip for about $20 and some extention cables for $5 that will allow you to get the same effects behind your monitor, in and under your PC controlled with your motherboard software for only $27 with plenty of extra strip to put wherever else.

    I'm mad there's so many lighting settings aren't usable without the hue 2 I have the h500i so the smart hub had access to like half the lighting features. So if I buy a hue 2 so I just unplug the lights from the smart hub and plug then into the hue 2? I wanna use starry night setting lol

    I have the old nzxt hue classic (not the Hue+) and i would like to know If its compatible with rgb fusion sync feature in aorus motherboards. The old nzxt Hue is not controlled by software, its an external manual controller that switch the lightning effects.
    Can i plug this rgb kit directly on motherboard rgb connector?

    I' admit, I'm a rgb junkie and a nzxt customer. i have the s340 with the hue + 1st gen, the 140mm nzxt fans, and i even pioneered the 4th rgb strip to the bottom of my computer for the underglow effect, on mine and my wife's cases. they literally released the gen 2 like a month after i paid for the 1st gen, so i was a little butthurt about that, and after seeing all these components and monitor stuff it really is starting to seem like it's getting out of hand. i think i'm happy with where i'm at right now especially for the sake of avoiding all that extra cable management.

    I did RGB way back in the early 2000's. I've grown up since then. My computer is a tool and being a tool it doesn't need to light up my office with rainbow lighting. Personally it is a waste of money.

    I got the 1st NZXT hue+ and thought it was great until after a few months. There was an update for the CAM software and causes my hue+ to occasionally just not work. I contacted NZXT customer support and they sent me the older version of their software but even then it didn’t power up and at times the effect I would choose wouldn’t work but I could get one static color on at a time.

    Razer announced during CES that there are going to be a load of other companies RGB stuff that will work with Razer Chroma. NZXT is one of those companies. If NZXT Hue 2 works with Razer Chroma then I think NZXT and Razer might win the RGB race. Unless of course the other companies gets their act together and start collaborating as well.

    Dude, was this a sponsored vid? I would have had to give it a thumbs down simply for the molex. But then add to that the DOA cable combs and piss-poor adhesive, and my final word would would have been "if you absolutely, positively must have over-the-top RGB-everything, well there's this. But if you don't want to flush your money down the toilet, there are much cheaper options that will do the job"... I swear I'm not just trying to hate on you man, but as someone who bought into the hue+ hype I just don't feel like NZXT RGB products are worth what they're charging for them...

      yeah, shame there was no RGB control akin to DMX, it is a pity. Stage lighting control soft just makes all this vendor specific computer soft that fills the taskbar like Dell/HP bloatware, look archaic. static demo modes, and not even affect timing triggers for the RGB effects with a complete lack of an industry 'standard' interface like DMX is just silly. I really am dumbfounded that they have not made the computer lighting DMX compatible yet. lol.
      Maybe their afraid someone will do this to their computer, lol.

    I just added a Monster (the company Monster) LED strip to the back of my monitors last night that reacts to sound in 4 different modes, cycles colors in 4 different modes, or can maintain a static color controlled via remote. I got it from Walmart for less than $10. This is cool, but not even close to being worth the asking price.
