ARRGEEEBEEEEEE -Linus 2017
He forgot to talk about those that you connect to your HDMI cable and are responsive to the colours on your screen. Those are the real deal.
can you give me the name of those? Ive seen pics and vids of them, just don't know what they're called.
Link or name would be awesome
Yup, can't find any either.
3ll1s There is one called Ambilight
DreamScreen is another one.
I actually use a standard desk lamp that points behind my monitors, onto the white wall. It's the same effect.
@Cthulhu Almost, until you want a subtle colored option. But i guess if you like swapping bulbs you could do that.
I use my phones light
Genius
BIAS LIGHTING? more like A REASON TO BUY MORE R!G!B! RGB! RGB!
EMOJISS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LESS IS MORE? FUCK THAT MORE RGB IS MORE RGB!!!! RGB RGB RGBBBBB
word.
CMYK! ;-D Jk RGB! RGB!
I got a dreamscreen set up on my entertainment center. It was expensive but it destroys those boring RGB back lighting. The dreamscreen lighting is dynamic to the picture on the screen.
KNAWLEDGE
KNAWLEDGE
KNAWLEDGE
wait fuck you guys are done doing this
Jack Le Knowledge* Your grammar could do with a little work.
/r/wooosh
We had a Phillips TV a decade ago that had built in ambient/bias lighting. It changed colors to whatever was the dominant color on the screen on the time. I loved it.
This was very illuminating, thanks for the bright idea, hope too see you soon, with a better view,
Ive had ambient lighting for years lol. It really does help with the eye strain. I can easily spend 12h gaming with no problems :D
I've been doing this with various USB leds for like 10 years, didn't even realize this was a thing, it just was more pleasant to watch the monitor this way.
What about one of these that continues the picture on your screen? Like it computers from the pixels around the edges of your screen the average colors and displays it.
I built one of those for around 10$. You have a video on my channel :)
MazeOfEncryption I think they are really distracting and stupid overall, I would rather buy one of those rbg strips that come with a remote and tape it to the back of my monitor
That Razer whatever-the-project-name-is projector thing?
that_fluffy_jello no, he's talking about something like Philips Ambilight TVs (are those still a thing?).
I personally feel they make the image seem more vibrant and make my eyes less strained. Especially if your monitor is Vesa mounted to the wall the effect is amazing for movies and games.
This is kind of like Ambient Lighting (might have been branded as Ambilight?) that used to come with Philips plasma TVs. It was an interesting feature that you’d think is kind of dumb, but it was actually really cool.
I'm sad you didn't mention reactive bias lighting. Especially since it's the video thumbnail.
thats too advanced/deep of a topic for tech quickie to cover, the research is so superficial you could learn infinitely more just by googling it and clicking on a few links.
i have bias lighting behind my TV. well worth it. it doesn't take much
i just used a cheap clamp light with a 6500k bulb and surge protector that has some of the outlets turn on automatically when whatever is plugged into the "master" outlet is turned on. so my clamp light comes on by itself when the TV is powered on.
highly recommend it
Note that for oled displays
Bias lighting does not enhance contrast.
but it still reduces eye strains
Bias light.. a variant on the "tv bad for eyes, you should put a candle or table lamp on top (left/right side) on it" urban legend, which has sold bazillions of table lamps since the '50s :)
THAT WAS SUCH A GOOD EPISODE!! often there's so many chringy INDUENDO crap in these videos. but this was genuinely so good to see something clean yet really entertaining
For a year or more I've been turning my table lamp to light the wall behind my laptop. And now I realize that it's called bias lighting. Whatever you know. Awesome! now I know why I'm doing this, It's actually helps my eyes.
Protip: You can imitate this effect with your phone by using the flashlight
Philips figured it out ages ago with Ambilight. And I love it.
BIAS LIGHTING!? Comrades, we have finally reached our goals ))))
alfred lindquist ))))))
100% first world probs
Linus is The Best of All 😊
it also makes watching movies more immersive when talking about active bias lightning like in 0:53
Yep. Linus is reading my thoughts. I've been googling this shit for the past week.
You could do this with Philips Hue LED Lighting.
If you're gaming, you could also have them trigger and flash as the noise increases like explosions.
Those are wayyy more expensive
Divisiondoorway True definitely not cheap. I have them in my living room / family room. It's a case of you get what you pay for.
Might as well just buy an ambilight tv...
yeah i want lightbulbs that can be hacked from the internet sounds great m8
Legends say that bias lighting LED strips sale increases somewhile after this video posted.
My wife called it dork light. I now know what It's called, I can say to her "nyah uh! It's bias lighting!"
Thanks Linus.
Any RGB kits that you can plug into your PC that will change colors based on what is displayed on the screen? Like at 0:55
I wonder if you could integrate the RGB bias lighting with F.lux so it matches the adjustments to the display's colour temperature?
bias lighting is a god sent
I just placed a cheap lamp behind my display + a 6.5k bulb and it was *very helpful*
It's called Ambilight Linus.
It was made popular by Philips and it's Ambilight line of TV's.
And it's glorious.😃
My HP monitor has an ambiance feature; it also saves energy, and has a little light under the screen for keyboard. 🌚
Kitty S what model?
John Hurst HP w2558hc. It was around 500 5-6 years ago when I bought it, and it still rocks! 😁
That is sooooo dope :0 I'm officially a jar of jelly!
Why do you need light for keyboard when you have RGB keyboards?
But it is still dope!
PixelVirus It's not just for the keyboard, but also for reading/work while you're using the computer late nights... 🤤
Is there any way to sync them with what is on the screen?
Philips Ambilight patent EP 137908 has been registered back in 2011.
TV's with that system has been on sale in the Netherlands since that year.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambilight
Welcome Linus to the future that is already ancient history.
Smooth Video Project has this feature, you can have 'fake' backlighting in the black bars around movies, and there is also ambient backlighting control (using prismatik software)
Hey I'm early. You get it....
*Techquickie intro.*
I just bought an $8 White LED lamp on a flexible head...then put it next to my monitor, facing at an angle dead-center behind my monitor. It serves as bias lighting when I want it...and the cord is long enough that I can use it as a flashlight for isolating spots in my room that need cleaning...or as a worklight due to its flexible nature. The only downside is that the LEDs are integrated and nonreplaceable...but it was $8 and has an estimated lifespan of 25,000 hours (about 3 years).
Whats with the color shift of linus in the freshbooks shot
Do you guys recommend RGB or white bias lightning?
Are the suggested 6500K white light strip bright enough to replace a typical room's light blub? Meaning can I sololy use the light strip when I'm using my computer at night
Hey what is a BSI sensor in camera?
Take Bias Lighting to the next level. Get Philips Hue LED strips, pop them on the back of your TV, monitor TV with phone or tablet and have it adjust the LED's to match color of TV (I already do this). Perhaps write a Kodi addon to do this? I have a Samsung TV, I wouldn't mind native Samsung TV Support for Philips Smart Bias Lighting.
one of my worst investments was from following a DIY back monitor lighting for my PC using the *Arduino* controller board. the lesson I've learned was that if the tutorial doesn't come with an *easy* way to purchase the parts - simply.... don't do it (Ambilight was what is was called)!
Should have mentioned the dynamic ambient light that is on Phillips TV's and third party boxes that goes into hdmi. These uses rgb to change colors at the borders of the screen extending the image somewhat and are really neat. I hope when Phillips patent expires that all manufacturers get it on their TV's since it is so nice. You can also do it yourself with a raspberry pi.
Had to turn off notifications for Techquickie, it doesn't deserve it anymore
can you do or have you done a subliminal message techquickie?
I added a LED behind my screen exactly for the 1st reason of eye fatigue. I also added a switch for it is connected to an USB port behind my screen and unpluging/replugging to avoid it being used when not needed.
is bias an abreveation?
Hello Linus , last week my z87 motherboard socket 1 pin is broken , is there any ways to fix it ?? Please help me.
Are you going to do a how-to or a tech quickie on Lightberry (ambilight etc etc)?
Imagine getting your backlighting to reflect directional damage indicators in multiplayer games.
no
Wait so how would you set up lighting that changes with the screen like in the thumbnail?
Isn't there something on oc as well line on tv with philips ambilight (or whatever its called).
Tbh this sounds great but i would want to set the colors with the color the display is putting out
It's nice to see the old thumbnail
How could you do this episode without even mentioning Philips Ambilight?
because tech quickie research consists of seeing it on youtube or 4chan and googling it once, then they throw it in a script and record it.
Scrolled too far for this
AMBX AMBX AMBX!!!!!!!
dp vn03 yahh
But why no reference to ambilight?
Hey guys, i have a very blue backlight on my monitor. But isn't blue light worse for the eyes? I have actually turned it off since i've read, that blue light makes the eyes tired faster. Would you recommend leaving the blue backlight shut off?
Any info or a review about Lightpack or Lightpack 2?
there are bias lights that illuminate around the display that get their color from the content that is displayed on the screen.
Instant ordered it from Amazon asap!
Oh man the audio/video quality has improved a ton at LTT in the last few years.
Does Bias lighting have to have the same colors as within the picture at the same time (like what DIY Perks did) or is it quite literally lighting to put behind?
I have AmbiBox Lightpack for 70$ Just plug USB, install Prismatic and you got Full Ambilight experience
Can someone recommend equivalent of MediaLight? I'm in UK and all I want is nice white led strip.
You can also build one yourself with an Arduino, a breadboard, an LED strip, and some Processing code.
Still enjoying mine :D
that would've been too advanced for tech quickie to cover, too much research and effort has to go into finding something as complicated and highly advanced as that
I actually just followed a quick tutorial online. Was pretty easy actually.
Osimmac *would have
oops im a grammar scrub and my brain remembered would of and not would've. i pronounce them pretty much the same.
also HatchetHaro i was joking about how they don't research some of their videos very well..
I've just installed bias lighting on my monitor with a USB LED strip with 20-some "bulbs". All during this episode.
I relly like it for now.
Philips needs to bring their Ambilight TVs to the United States. I would buy it without thinking twice.
Could you do the same video but about lightberry? It's something that does the same thing that Philips ambilight does
First time I came across Bias Lighting was when Philips had TVs with Ambilight. Later on they would also create and spin-off amBX Ltd. for the PC
Either he has 20 of those shirts, never washes the 1 he has, or washes the 1 he has every half hour
Anybody catch the low key diss on Unbox Therapy??? Lol well done Linus
You can also buy a Led light kit for behind your tv or monitor that mimics what’s on the scree. I can’t remember who does it but I would like to get it for my tv and monitor
Are you going to review AmbiVision PRO? It is interesting direct screen capturing not a hdmi-passthrough device. I have to decide which one is better - I use Netflix directly from SmartTV, thus Dreamscreen will not work at all?
HELP..... I just bought a SHARP LC-43P5000U SMART TV that I wanted to hook to my HP Pavilion 20-b313w All-in-One Desktop PC running Windows 10. I thought by running a USB cable between the two that would do it. After not getting it to work that way, I called Sharp Support who tells me there is NO way I can connect the two.
I find that hard to believe; can you help? FYI - I do not have wireless.
Linus interesting idea. use that LED's in my Cosmos II Tower like its doors and behind my PS3 3D Display monitor. Thank you for that video. great job! I keep forgetting the thumbs up for the video. Just when I was about to get something else done. Oh man give Linus a Thumbs up. He worked so hard to get it done
watching this episode on a Bias lighting setUp monitor
#feelsGoodMan
I built this for my PC a year and a half ago :)
It's really easy to do with available resources and quite cheap, even for a huge screen.
0:22 linus car mod. IGN 10/10
Best useful tech under $100? Cool
3:00 this also has to do with how backlighting can make your pupils smaller, thus reducing glare.
Okay, this is getting scary. Bough a projector, next LTT video is DIY projecton screen project, now i was thinking about backliting the screen, a bias lighting video pops up on TechQuickie.. STOP FOLLOWING ME LINUS!
I have been doing this my entire life by putting my desktop lamp behind my monitor. I now also finally have a keyboard with RGB backlighting so I can see they keys even in the dark.
the picture in 0:28 is a game called street legal racing btw
Link to that slrr mod please
Interesting, can we have a tech quickie on colour temperature? (explaining the warm/cool correlation to Kelvin)
I think it's kind of stupid that warm/cool has an inverse correlation to the actual temperatures of objects which produce that spectrum.
When people talk about "warm colours" they mean ones with lots of red and "cool colours" as ones with lots of blue, which is the opposite from how temperature affects the spectrum.
Got ya, it's a bit strange that people associate warm with redder colours and cool with bluer colours, but in reality, Kelvin is a unit to measure actual temperature.
So if I put bias lighting behind my monitor and set it up so that it would reproduce the colors from the display, do I get the same benefit as I would if I set up 6500K? I feel like that would be more immersive and better for gaming, but my priority would be the practical effects of the lighting so I would ditch the RGB in a second if it was significantly less effective.
3:34 you can also use the empty molex in you pc
What camera do you use?
I own what is called a "Lightpack". It is basically like a PC Ambilight solution, and it plugs in via USB. And it's not that expensive!
Thanks a lot linus! This might've been what i've been looking for. Definitely looking forward to try out the bias lighting! :)
TPS Reports - I see what you did there ;)
Okay but is it RGB
William White yes
Guys that doesn’t answer my question. RGB? Or not? It’s not that difficult
William White ...
The jokes going right over yalls head.
+Gord Mosset Whoosh.
I already do that for years because it reduces ENORMOUSLY eye fatigue. Although I don't use back light I just use a lamp near the pc, it's the same thing...
Do the Christmas lights on my desk count as bias lighting?
I bought RGB ram because it was 6€ cheaper with same speed and CL.
Justcampus can you buy me some? Please? :)
What about Immersion?
What about lights above you?
I told people they would forget about hating on the intro in time lol!
I have done something like this, I stuck RGB strips to the back of my monitors which are controlled by a Raspberry Pi to match the average screen color. I definitely want to get an addressable strip for the full ambilight effect.
Great informative video! Thanks
