Two bars from the score of "Nearer My God to Thee" are engraved on Hartley's gravestone. Presumably this was the version that he played. The name of the hymn tune is "Propior Deo" written by Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert-and-Sullivan fame). This is, I believe, the methodist version. The version played in "A Night to Remember" is by John Bacchus Dykes and the tune is called "Hornbury." The version played in the Cameron movie is called "Excelsior" and was written by Lowell Mason.

The bars in the engraving on Wallace Hartley's grave are certainly from Sir Arthur Sullivan's setting of "Nearer My God To Thee", "Propior Deo" composed for The Methodist Hymnal, as is visible even from the very limited section of the engraving visible in this video, so it's particularly strange that the soundtrack when this is referred to is playing a version of fhe American setting by Lowell Mason. Even the superb film "A Night to Remember" - still in almost every other respect the best and most accurate movie account of the sinking of 'Titanic' - gets this wrong, using the Anglican tune 'Horbury', but the inaccuracy can be partly forgiven by the fact that it is used to very great emotional and dramatic effect especially in the closing seconds when a 'cello - but not Wallace Hartley's violin - floats past 'Carpathia'.

Undoubtedly and without question , this man and his fellow musicians were the absolute hero's of that dreadful night . Too many passenger testimonies confirming the events cannot be interpreted in any other way . My own understanding is that with minus 10 temperatures and seawater temperature just over freezing , these guys played for some 40 minutes to an hour soothing the nerves of the first and second class passengers who by that time must have known that the destination of the ship was very different to that printed on their tickets . I am a guitar player so its all about finger work on the strings and I cant play my guitar for any longer than a quick 3 minute song before I cant feel my fingers in the intense cold of just o degrees . So my question is "How did they do it" ? no gloves could be worn yet the best witness to confirm the last song was the radio operator who swore in court that it was Nearer my God to thee , played at the end . And he heard this when he was under an upturned lifeboat with his ears full of seawater and amongst the screams and cry,s of the passengers . He had been swimming for about an hour , so he said which totaly contradicts the British sub aqua club findings on how long a man can stay alive in freezing waters fully clothed . There was a lot of superhuman acts that night !

You need to get your facts straight before making statements in a video. Wallace Hartley was indeed very brave and deserves any and all accolades bestowed on him as well as the other brave Titanic Musicians. But, many statements made in this video are very wrong. Here are some of the Correct FACTS : 1.) The Titanic struck the iceberg on April 14, 1912 and sank on April 15th 2.) There are no records or recollections anywhere of Mr. Hartley being offered/refusing a seat in a lifeboat 3.) Titanic had no "ballroom" the musicians gathered in the First class lounge, they later moved to the "Boat deck" neat the entrance to the Grand Staircase. 4) There was no moon that night at all 5.) A ship called the "Mackay Bennett" (not McCabe) was dispatched from Halifax, Nova Scotia April 17. 1912 to retrieve bodies. Maybe you should do some research and try again.

A far cry from the bs Hollywood Titanic film. That liked to vilify all the English Sailors and Naval crew.
