- Since the 1930's racecar drivers from all origins have tried to set new records on the Nurburgring. Although only very few ever could match Sabine Schmitz. In the years 1996 and 97 she won the 24 hour race as the first woman ever and therefore earned the title "Queen of the Nurburgring".
Unfortunately Sabine Schmitz lost her battle against cancer on the 16th of march 2021. On the sad occasion of her passing, we look back on her greatest successes. Rest in Peace, Sabine!

When she was on Top Gear and did a lap in a Transit van in just over 10mins...
And just casually passed a litre bike while doing it.
This was my absolute favorit, so crazy how she has driven the Transit around the track. She was so cool with great humor. I am so sad, that she is gone. RIP Sabine

I am a nobody in the racing world, yet I felt deeply saddened by the passing of Sabine. There were no pretences with Sabine. Humour and hard work, combined with phenomenal racing skills made her an exceptional person.
"I could do that in a van" the best ever 'slapdown' in the whole of TopGear, what a driver, truly a loss to all who love motor racing- she proved herself time and again. RIP Sabine.

Sabine Schmitz you were an absolute Legend and I was a massive fan from the first time I saw you back in 2004 on Top Gear racing Jeremy Clarkson in that Ford Transit, your presence and charisma, great personality, sense of humour and immense ability on the track were clear to see!! Been an avid Fan ever since! You will be missed by so MANY! But never forgotten!!

This the first I’ve heard of Sabine passing. Even here in Wichita, Kansas, USA I know of Sabine and her many accomplishments. Feel horrible that it was cancer that took her away from us. Some notable feature of the Ring should be named in her honor.

Since Top Gear every time I see a Transit van being driven fast on the road, in my mind I say "Who do you think you are? Sabine Schmitz?"

Absolute legend - the Queen of the N'Ring
Living in Germany the last 24 years, I’ve seen Sabine Schmitz many times on a variety of shows here and in Austria. She was a very warm, funny and competitive person. I just found out today that she passed. My condolences to her loved ones. May she Rest In Peace.

I remember my very first introduction to Sabine Scmidt courtesy of Top Gear, the episode featured Sabine absolutely throttling a stock standard Ford Transit van repeatedly around the Nurburgring track, even after removing wing mirrors and wipers plus various other on the spot remedies (mostly involving masking tape, lol) and with Sabine couragously pushing herself and the stubborn van to its absolute limits, the Transit van iirc valiantly held out breaking a sub 9 min lap .... Good Times and great tv.

You gave the world of car enthusiasts a view and understanding of the Green Hell that nobody else could, or has. My sincere condolences to all your family, colleagues and friends.

What an incredible human being she was. Full of life. Yes her life was too short but she had a life filled with her passions, animals, nature... and lots of work behind. I also like the way she talks about cars. She’s probably the person that knows all the M5 generations!

Wow. I`ve seen a lot of Sabine videos on this platform the last few days, but I had no idea it was because she died. There`s an old saying that we`re not truly dead as long as people remember us, and I think Sabine will be remembered for a long time to come. RIP legend. To all of those suggesting she should have a corner at the `Ring named after her, I completely agree. She earned it.
They need to re-name or add Sabine's name to the Nürburgring track somehow. She was such a joy to watch, freaking incredible skills, and tenacious on track. God bless her family, RIP Sabine, you will never be forgotten. Freaking Legend!

I know her from Top Gear as many other posters.... VERY SAD..... What a great lady... She held her own with the TG crew.... I did not know her whole history. I assumed she died from a driving accident, but it was cancer. She was an inspiration and lived life to the fullest.... thank you Sabine....
