    Sabine Schmitz is one of motorsports greatest trailblazers. Rarely do we see an individual with such talent and unmistakeable passion carry themselves with the grace, class, and humility she did. May she rest in peace.

    The thing that convinced me she was the best racer in the world was when she went the 2nd time with the van. She was disappointed, but also she didn't want to do it again because of how scary it was. For me, how humble and knowing her limits was what made her a legend. F****** cancer always has to destroy things when we're enjoying them the most.

    • @SmallBlogV8
      @SmallBlogV8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      True. Being super committed and yet _also_ knowing when to stop is both what makes her so impressive and also, probably, the reason the Nordschleife never claimed her life like it has to however many other hot shoes over the years. And yes, f__k cancer.

  • @arthuralford
    @arthuralford ปีที่แล้ว +91

    Watching Sabine hustle a Transit around the Ring with Richard Hammond holding on for dear life, while she's enjoying herself was one of the best things I've ever seen. And you knew how much of a racer she was when she wanted to try again, lightened the van as much as possible, got someone to pace her and then went out and wring everything out of that Transit. No one could have lapped the Ring faster in that van.
    Sabine Schmitz was a native of Nurburg, lived there her entire life, and got to do a job she loved. Can't get better than than

    8:33 I was there in the Pit, when Johannes Scheid drove his Tribute Lap over the Nürburgring. (I´m in the shot actually).
    It was the Friday before the 24h Race. Qualifying Sessions were over and the teams are just to prepare their cars for the great race.
    But a last Event on the time table had to take part.
    All Teams came out of their Pit-Boxes were listening to the commentator.When Johannes Scheid drove his car trough the pitlane every team member spend applause for his drive. He drove slowly like 30 kph. And when he left the pits and went full throttle, the applause stopped and the only sound you can hear was the sound of the engine. The pit were silent and the atmosphere was depressed.
    But when the BMW arrived at the first corner, the audience continued the tribute of the teams and give him standing ovations too. I can hear the applause of the crowd till today. It was more silent because it was far away. You have to remember it was during corona and max. 10.000 visitors were allowed.
    On the video screens we could follow his lap during the time, we stood in pit.
    That was one of the most emotional moments of this year.
    The time after that it was clear, that she deserved his tribute to the nordschleife. It was not because she was a woman. It was because she was a children of the Nordschleife and the Nordschleife was her home. You can´t say Sabine Schmitz without thinking of the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Thats because she got the tribute of her own corner.
    The bubble at the Nürburgring is a small one. She was part of this family from the beginning.
    (Sorry for my bad english)

I even commented that on the last video I watched and he knew me, because I was one of the first 10k subs. His answer was rather not professional and also justifying his greed. After the update there was a challenge where they put her top gear 10 minute lap in a transit as a ghost car and you had to keep up with her. Admittedly, I didnt know much about her apart from her early Top Gear appearances and a bit of racing background. But Im very glad to learn more about her. It seems like she stood her ground and backed it up with amazing talent. Breaking barriers in racing isnt easy and Im sure there are a ton of girls in the world who admired her story and pursued racing because of her breaking through. People dont realize how one person inspiring even 2 or 3 others to follow their dreams despite whatever might hold them back, whether that be gender, race, religion, disability or orientation has a exponential impact going forward. Her inspiring another few who go on to inspire even more eventually becomes a norm and thats the goal for women in racing. Theres a person I admire greatly that once said, "I may not be the one to change the world, but I might be the one who inspires the person thats going to change the world" (paraphrased) I hope that holds true in Sabines case! RIP.

    Not many celebrities get me upset when i hear they pass away. When i heard she died, I was legitimately saddened. Going in the ring taxi with sabine driving was on my bucket list before i die. Rip queen

    Sabine stole our hearts on her appearances on Top Gear. It was a worldwide smash hit at the time. She was a charming german speed queen with beauty inside and out. Just found out they named turn 1 at the ring after her. What a wonderful tribute to a local hero. We love and miss you Sabine Queen Of The Ring.

    Damn is Josh, you brought a couple of tears. I only ever saw her on TV but she had such a personality & was such a character. Such a brave person through her cancer & it never stopped her doing what she loved. I can relate because my Daughter died of leukemia when she was 21 & knew what she went through with the blood transfusions & chemo. Perhaps that's one of the reasons for the tears? All the best....

    i was stationed in Germany in the late 90s, early 2000s. i built myself a little crappy VW go-kart out of a mk2 golf cabriolet. stripped out, hopped up a little, and really fun. i took it to the Ring all the time, racking up well over 100 laps on the Green Hell. one of my favorite memories was having the Queen rip right past me in the Ring Taxi while on track. knowing who she was in the world of motorsport, i felt honored. i will always bow to the great Queen. Long may she Race.

    What a great TH-cam episode. Having had the pleasure of speaking to Sabine at the Nurburgring I will say that she was humble and gracious and almost didn't seem to recognize her status among petrol heads. It was a great loss and she died way too young.

Keep up the great work and thank you for providing me with even more knowledge about motorsports and making me laugh.
