  • Here are my video settings for the Sony A7R III. These settings are for filmmakers and video creators. This is a quick start guide to start shooting video with the following info: Customizing buttons on camera for video, how to make a custom menu, setting up custom function buttons, focus modes, focus magnification, focus peaking, zebras, aps-c vs full frame, touch screen, moving focus point with joystick, eye autofocus, white balance, ISO, picture profiles, Slog2, Slog3 and creative profiles for vlogging vs cinematic filmmaking, how to get the most dynamic range out of your settings, audio levels, setting manual exposure for video, shutter release to record video, in-camera steady shot stabilization, custom dial setup for aperture and shutter speed, relieving issue with camera overheating and cinematic super slow motion. I don’t cover the entire menu as it’s a massive menu system, but I do go through the entire menu page by page so you can at least check out each setup visually. I hope this helps you setup your A7R III for shooting video :)

      NicksFort yeah to old now. Everyone is after info on the latest gear. You straight forward no nonsense info is great for us guys that hate reading manuals 😉

    • @NicksFort
      @NicksFort  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh I hate that because I really have my setting dialed in for the a7r2 and a7s2 since I have been using them for so long! I will make sure to do one for the a7s3 (whenever that finally comes out!) AND yes the manuals for the camera's can be such a pain in the ass, I just want to watch a 15 minute video and be done (hence why I made one since I thought it would be useful!)

  • @stinerbros

    Great video! I cant seem to figure out how to change the record speed, mine appears to be stuck on 30fps. I've got button 3 set up to change this and when I press it the menu comes up and I can choose between the different speeds, however, even though I select it the camera sticks with 30fps. Any suggestions?

    • @NicksFort
      @NicksFort  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make sure your dial on the top of the camera is set to the film mode (not photo). Then if you set your Record Setting to "24p 100mm" and your format is 4k it should work. Also try going into the menu and changing it vs using the custom key and see if that changes things! If all else fails I'd full reset the camera and start over. Hope that helps!

      hmmm I think I know what you are talking about...but it's hard to tell just from what you wrote up. If you click the display button on the back of the camera more than once it will rotate through different things being displayed on your back screen..,.maybe that's what you are looking for?

    @commercialand 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    you the man! thank you soooooooooo much for this!....and can you lock your exposer mode, it seems I dont mess with it much for film since I am at 24fps, I would be keeping it at 1/50. and I find myself hitting by accident not knowing it! since I am pretty new to video cameras. I moved it to the back of camera near monitor next to AF ON, because I was hitting constantly where the ON OFF button is! Lol
    Oh, and I have had AUTO PWR OFF TEMP, on Standard in 105 degree heat directly in sun on a farm, here in Roswell N.M, and so far never over heats...so standard may be pretty good for most people in high heat

    • @NicksFort
      @NicksFort  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing the note about the heat that's good to know. And as for the exposer mode lock....I am not sure about that but I really would love to know because I do the same thing from time to time and it's SUPER annoying.

    How well does it auto focus in Video S-log mode ? Both face recognition and tap on screen focus ? Does S-log make any difference with the auto focus ? Better, worse, same ?

    • @NicksFort
      @NicksFort  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't say that I tested it in s-log vs with picture profile off. I think I only really played around with it in s-log actually. And it worked pretty well in s-log. It's not at the level of Canon AF but for Sony it's the best AF that I have seen yet and that includes in the s-log picture profiles that I had setup :) Also if you haven't seen it here is my quick tutorial on the Auto Focus setup ==> th-cam.com/video/eLjpWQTy_0k/w-d-xo.html

      Right on! LOL you know what, I have a new series concept that I am working on....do you have another camera that you'd like to see "go up against" the a6500? Like a6500 vs. ???? give me some suggestions if you want

    • @mandoo_ro
      @mandoo_ro 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      love your spirit:))
      actually i am wondering if it's worth it now to spend more on a camera body than the a6500. I do a lot of run and gun, also mostly on autofocus and gimbal.

    • @NicksFort
      @NicksFort  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Luck for you the A7s ii and the A7R3 and A7R2 are all e-mount so your glass should work on those bodies also! I have a feeling it's going to be worth waiting for the A7S3 to come out though if you are shooting more video than photo. Plus I think the autofocus on the A7S3 should be upgraded from the A7S2....just my guess though! I am waiting for sure!

    Hi Nicks I like your tutorial and I figured you're the guy to ask. I am a DP in Toronto and am new to the DSLR world. I purchase the Sony A7R3. My question is I can't get the white box to stay on in 4K for face detection It comes on for a fraction of a second then goes away. I did turn on the AF Face priority and the Face direct Frame display. I was wondering if you knew how to keep that box on it would be helpful when I use a gimbal. By the way I did do the upgrade to the new firmware

    • @NicksFort
      @NicksFort  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm have you tried playing around with clicking through the different display modes? On the back if you click the top of the wheel where it says display it cycles through different display modes on the LCD. Also in the menu (I can't recall exactly where) there is an ability to change what is seen in those different display modes. So MAYBE in that menu you can customize if that box stays on or not? That's my best guess I hope you figure it out and if you do drop another comment here, I am interested in the answer myself!

    • @michelbisson1
      @michelbisson1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for getting back to me I will play around a little bit more with it tomorrow I also asked Sony Canada if they have an answer they're trying to figure it out also If I do figure it out I will let you know thanks again and I really did enjoy your tutorial.

    Can the Sony a7R3 camera shooting video offer an auto-focus ASSIST in manual focus mode -- meaning press a button to have the camera auto-focus, then let go and have focus stay locked?
    We need this feature all the time, and I'm hoping the a7R3 does it, and I'm just not aware. If so, I'd be delighted to be enlightened. But as far as I can tell, the camera in video mode has just two focus choices -- full manual, in which case neither the eye auto-focus, nor any auto-focus capability works at all -- and then full continuous auto-focus, in which case if an interview guest moves their head, the camera may suddenly focus on the back wall.
    I use auto-focus assist in manual focus mode all the time shooting video with the Lumix GH4/5 cameras. Not having it would be a huge disappointment, considering the a7R3 is so much newer technology than the GH4.
    If you're doing lots of video interviews in a row with slightly different set-ups, it's incredibly convenient to let the camera auto-focus each guest before you start rolling at the press of a button, but then have the focus stay locked after that. Clearly this could be a firmware revision. Hello? Sony???

    • @NicksFort
      @NicksFort  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having an auto-focus assist in manual focus mode would be dope! I know this isn't the same but you can try flipping to auto focus, hold the shutter half way down and then the camera will pull focus to your focus point then flip back to manual and it should keep that focus point...sort of an auto-focus assist hack for now :)

      Christopher Thorkon the menu system can be overwhelming. But if you take a few hours and spread it over a weekend you can learn it. Also the custom menu feature on this new one is amazing. I don’t have it on my a7s2 and having that feature on this a7r3 makes a huge difference once you set it up!

    So Sony got back to me and told me to do a reinstall on the camera after putting in the new firmware 1.01 and that solved the problem facial tracking is working. So looks like the new firmware solves the problem when shooting in 4K.

  • @michelbisson1
    @michelbisson1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Nicks I figured it out today how to get the Facial tracking in 4K to work on the A7R 3 I was filming downtown today with a producer who actually owns that camera and so we were talking about it and for some crazy reason he like to shoot in the manual mode on his camera. So that got me thinking about trying manual mode and seeing if the facial tracking will work and yes it does. So I believe that there is a firmware glitch in the system that Sony has to update to make it work on the film setting. I will email Sony and let them know about this.

    • @NicksFort
      @NicksFort  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OHHHH so if you are shooting in the "manual photo mode" it will work? But it won't work in the "video mode"? I know that is the case with the Eye AF (it only works in the manual photo mode and not in the video mode...

    • @michelbisson1
      @michelbisson1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The facial truck and will work in the manual mode but there's one problem when you're shooting video the frame size changes every time you turn the camera on and off. So Since we know that facial tracking works in 4K in the manual mode then why does it not work in the video mode. I believe they need to do a Firmware update to the camera to make it work in the film Mode.

    But what is going on with the focus magnification in video mode? It's completely unusable. But it works great for video in stills mode. Go figure. This was extremely frustrating the first time I used this camera for video with only the camera monitor to view. Is there a solution to this, or is the solution to use stills mode?

    • @NicksFort
      @NicksFort  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marius, I can't say that I recall having this issue when I was testing the a7r3 out. I feel like the focus mag worked in the video mode? Did you assign a custom in video mode for focus magnification and it didn't work?

    • @mariushaugan
      @mariushaugan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It works, as in it punches in, but the image is so soft it's almost impossible to tell exact focus. But in stills mode it works perfectly. I don't understand why.

    • @NicksFort
      @NicksFort  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marius that’s really odd. You’re using the same lens right? Also did you turn on the peaking feature to help with your focusing? Peaking on high plus the focus mag should work well. Also try looking in the EVF (the eye whole) and that should have a better result for getting focus vs the back LCD screen

    • @mariushaugan
      @mariushaugan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been using the GH4/5/5S for a while and the focus magnification in video mode is tack sharp, like it is in stills mode on the A7 cameras. I found that focus peaking didn't get that pin point I wanted, so ended up shooting the segment in stills mode and was able to focus 100%. I just don't understand why Sony limited the sharpness or detail in video mode. Try it yourself, compare the focus magnification in stills mode vs movie mode.

    • @NicksFort
      @NicksFort  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm okay I will try it out on my A7SII. I don't own the A7R3. I just rented it to test it out and see if I would replace my A7SII with it (which I haven't, because I am waiting for the a7s3 to come out, which who knows when that will be lol)

      make sure your shutter speed is double your frame rate. so 24fps = 1/50 for your shutter, etc. That might be the issue.

    Sony needs to keep up with time they make the cameras way to complex to a point it doesn’t need to be its 2020 now and they still lack in that category there is no reason for half the crap they have in the menu

I know it can be hard to find music you're allowed to use, but try to get music for all your videos! Also try to look right in the middle of the lens when you are talking to the audience. Sometimes you are looking up and away (maybe you have a flip out monitor? But make sure you keep eye contact with the camera! Keep on making videos man! Love it!

      @NicksFort  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Rick! You are totally right it's pixel binning, even further confirmation that I have no idea what it is (though I just googled it and understand it better now)

    • @cppguy16
      @cppguy16 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Binning means combining adjacent pixels, such as a 2x2 area, into a single pixel. It's significantly less CPU intensive than proper oversampling and interpolation. As electronics are getting more efficient, binning will eventually disappear completely, as oversampling gives a sharper looking result, if you can afford running it non-stop without overheating.
