    Thanks for this! I am in the process of second guessing my A7Riv purchase. I like it a lot but I dont know if it is right for my purposes considering I want to do more video portraits and video period. That kind of just changed as I am still a beginner. Now I am in the process of determining if I should sell a barely used A7rIV and go with something else. This video shows me that it is plenty capable to shoot quality video and it is obviously amazing for stills. I was looking to start with photos and transition to short films/videos. I suppose I can lean towards something more video centric later on in my journey and do my best creatively with the A7Riv. Definitely not a bad option to do both seeing what you did with it!

    • @jordanalsadi
      @jordanalsadi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Robert,
      Thanks so much for taking the time to say that! You definitely have an awesome camera that is very capable! Like all cameras, it has its pros and cons, but the RIV can be a great hybrid shooter if you work around its megapixels/low light performance! The 61MP sensor can hinder it a bit when it comes to low light, but I’ve found if I stay in the HLG profile, don’t let my highlights go over 100 IRE, try to keep my skin tones right around 70, and don’t push past 3200 ISO, the RIV will hang in there pretty well with the rest of the Sony lineup!
      As far as your decision on selling the camera, depending on your needs, it could last you a while and be a versatile body, suiting you well for your hybrid shooting! I actually do a lot of wedding video as well as photography, and it really holds up well for both! With the only caveat being you need to be sure to get your exposure right on the video side and getting at least a cheap light for your darker scenes will make a huge difference! The 8 bit video it produces is very clean, but can fall apart if you are doing heavy grading or corrections, but if you get the exposure relatively close, especially in HLG, you still have a good bit of wiggle room for corrections and coloring!
      I would totally push that RIV until you start doing a lot of video, and it starts holding you back. This camera will make you a great filmmaker and has most of the tools for you to grow all of your video skills!
      When you are setting up and testing your RIV for video, let me know if there is anything that gives you an issue! I’ve grown to know this camera like the back of my hand, and have had to work through all of its quirks, while learning its strengths!
      More than happy to help or give some advice with shooting with it! You’re going to love it!

      @Ailes, I bet you'll be pretty happy with it. I bought it more for photos than video but do definitely want to start getting into video also. I really appreciate this video. Similar story as a bunch of other commenters: photographer that has been asked to shoot video. One thing that I am not able to figure out, how do I switch focus areas in video? The A7R IV seems like it's stuck on center focus, and then allows you to "tap to track". There doesn't seem a way to change it to wide or zone.

    I do have a question, do you have some advise when it comes to low light situations?

    • @jordanalsadi
      @jordanalsadi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch it and leave this comment. As far as low light, the only thing I have found to really combat it, isn’t really anything too crazy.
      I try to use the fastest lens I can, and then as far as settings go, I try my best to not go above 3200 ISO 6400 at max, and I use a small LED video light on a light stand most of the time in low light as well!
      Besides that, normally when I’m editing that footage I will throw a plug-in on top called Neat Video, and that really goes a long way in cleaning the footage up and getting the best out of it. If you do use Neat Video, I would recommend sharpening the video back up afterwards. The sweet spot for me is normally around the 25% mark!

    • @jordanalsadi
      @jordanalsadi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Adi,
      Thanks for the comment! When I shoot slow motion on the A7RIV I would drop to 1080p so I could shoot at 60 fps at a 1/120 shutter speed! It does suck that you have to lose the 4K, but as long as you don’t crop in on your edit for those clips and keep a good exposure it will still look great!

    • @jordanalsadi
      @jordanalsadi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, yes, it will! So whenever you are shooting video, I would turn the picture profile on, and whenever you are shooting stills, I would just keep it turned off! It’s a pain that Sony thankfully addressed in its newer models, that can hopefully come to its legacy cameras with a software update!

  • @ThaneRogersPhoto

    Jordan, excellent video. Easy to understand your settings. I am a long time nature photographer but have just recently started capturing video with my A7RIV. I have been shooting in 1080p with no problem but want to start shooting 4K. I used your suggested settings which agree with several other photographers. My problem is when I try 4K any movement, whether panning or subject movement is jittery, both in real time and in playback. I am using memory cards - Lexar SDXC V90 2000x. Any suggestions?? I would appreciate it.

    • @jordanalsadi
      @jordanalsadi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your kind words, the first thing that comes to mind based off what your saying would be a shutter speed issue!
      Are you using the 180 degree rule? If not they should probably clear up your issue. Just keep your shutter speed locked off at double your frame rate. So if your shutter 4K 24FPS keep your shutter speed at 1/50 and that will clean that right up! If that’s not the issue, let me know and we will keep going down the list until we get it taken care of!

    • @ThaneRogersPhoto
      @ThaneRogersPhoto 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jordanalsadi Thanks for answering Jordan. Kind of you to take the time. I don't see many photographers actually answering the questions. You answer most. I commend you for that. So, that solved my problem. Coming from shooting stills, the 180 degree rule seems a foreign concept but have been researching since I saw your reply. I am getting the point now. Ran some test shots at home and seems to be good. Anxious to try in the field. Thanks again!

    What SD card do you recommend to cope with 4k 60 on the A7RIV, roughly around 256gb storage too? Thanks

    • @jordanalsadi
      @jordanalsadi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I highly recommend a the Sony E series SDXC UHS-II Card , V60, CL10, U3 (R270MB/S, W120MB/S) Card. Its dependable, and fast enough for even my Sony a7S III. It can handle every format even on that camera besides the 4K 120! Plus, I picked up the 128GB cards for 40 bucks on Amazon! I highly recommend that card! When I got them I bought 6 for me and 6 for my wife! I accidentally recorded a whole ceremony in 4K 60 on the SIII, and it was writing to 2 of those cards for just over an hour with no issue on either card. That's the only card I've used for the past 3 years, with over 120 weddings and a ton of mini shoots with no issues! Cant say enough about the quality to price!

I looked again after seeing your comment just to try and confirm and I didn't find anything unfortunately! Which is crazy due to how underrated that camera is! Hi Jordan,
    I love your videos, I am a new Videographer from India.
    I just want to ask if I shoot without using Picture Profile and edit or Color Grade the footage.
    Does it gives poorer results as compared to shooting in HLG2 or S-LOG3.
    Please Guide...

    • @jordanalsadi
      @jordanalsadi  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello,
      It doesn’t give poorer results but it does make the footage less flexible! The reason being is a lot of your color data and exposure data in the image will be baked in the footage, giving you less adjustment when compared to something like S-LOG!
      Once you get familiar with S-LOG in most cases I feel that it makes the editing process easier, because you have the ability to tweak the footage more and get it exactly how you want it, as well as making it easier to match some of the other shots in your project that may have a different white balance/exposure!

    do you have another video editing on adobe?

    • @jordanalsadi
      @jordanalsadi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately I don’t have as much experience with Adobe’s video editor. I did see another channel called Picture Pulse that made a video on their HLG settings and color grading in premiere pro, and it looked like he broke down his process on editing HLG on there.
      Hopefully that helps point you in the right direction though! I may be wrong on this, but I think you don’t have to do as many steps in premiere and it’s a little bit more intuitive than Final Cut, when it comes to processing HLG footage!

      That’s an area setting based on the country the camera was originally purchased in. Hi Jordan. I am a realist painter. I am going to get this camera next week to take pictures of my subjects and also to take videos of my work for Instagram and TH-cam. In addition, I zoom a lot when painting. Do you think my choice is right? Or should I go to a7iv?
    A simple video without editing, I just want the colors to be correct like the painting I draw

    • @jordanalsadi
      @jordanalsadi  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Based on your use case I think both cameras could do a fantastic job at accurately capturing the colors in your artwork.
      But I would determine which of these features matters the most for you!
      The a7R IV does have the higher 61 megapixel sensor, so depending on if you did want to photograph your paintings to sell prints, that gives you more flexibility there. Especially with the fine detail in painted art.
      Using both cameras, I’d say color accuracy is almost identical.
      On the video side you do have a little more data to work with in the aZ IV, and better low light capabilities, but honestly the a7R IV does a great job too especially if you are going to be taking photos or videos in a controlled lighting environment.
      If you can find a good deal on one over the other, I would go with the best deal and put the extra money towards a good sharp prime lens for your work! Which will probably make the aZ IV the better option, again unless you plan on photographing your work for print!
      Also, to help you get exact colors, whichever camera you choose looking into a tool like the Calibrite ColorChecker Passport they make one focused on video and one for photo! It will help your editing software dial in the exact colors you used and help account for the color cast of lights and other external forces that affect the shade of color!
      Hope this helps!

      @@jordanalsadiThank you very much for your answer, which is very valuable to me. Here, these two cameras are almost the same price now. The photographic features of the Riv make me more eager to buy it. Because the more details the image has, the better I can draw. Of course, most of my work is portrait and figurative. and I don't need it for printing. Considering that I want to film for TH-cam and Instagram only and I am not going to do professional work for filming, which camera would be better for me in your opinion? My problem is only in the difference in filming. There are two cameras, the difference may be very noticeable

      @NaserSa-y1m Honestly, Ive been use the Sony a7IV a lot lately because its such a good hybrid camera for doing a good mix of photo and video!
      You will have pros and cons of each of course, but if you are planing to do a good mix of both, and don’t have plans of creating very large prints! I would go with the Sony a7IV. I think you will be very happy with the photos, and have great features and quality for video as well! It’ll be great for your photos and your TH-cam recording!

    Catalyst Browse Stabilization doesn’t work with Sony A7Riv A please why isn’t it working?

      Honestly, I’m not too sure! I haven’t used that software before to stabilize footage. I normally just use the stabilizer inside of Final Cut Pro!

      Ok thanks. I took it back for A7iv anyway

    What about the memory? Is it compatible with v30 memory?

    • @jordanalsadi
      @jordanalsadi  ปีที่แล้ว

      For the memory, I have a several of the Sony branded V60 cards and that’s really all I’ve used! I think the V30s cover that camera due to bit rate but not 100% sure if they will do the highest settings to be honest!

    I am stumped...I bring my footage into Premier Pro and the frame rate still shows 23.97 versus the 60fpx settings on the camera.

    • @jordanalsadi
      @jordanalsadi  ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on your camera settings, it’s probably converting in camera. Check your slowmo settings to confirm the output says 60fps as well! That would be my guess though!

      @@jordanalsadi Thanks for the quick reply....I ~~~~think~~~~ I needed to adjust my settings in Premier Pro in preferences...I still need to test more clips.
