WOW WOW WOW!! The most amazing Master Class in advanced focus technique!! Thank you for the HOLD FOCUS TIP my friend!!!
(Had to disengage the video record function from my shutter button but WOW SO HANDY)
Hi Jac, I have Sony FX30, and I'm using AF, with Focus Mode - Continuous auto focus and AF transition speed and AF subj. shift sensitivity at 4, some how when I take moving shot, like move the camera in a diameter angle, most of the objects are a bit out of focus or a bit blurry or lack of clarity. I use aperture at 7 or 8, and wide angle, there is no person involved, but when I upload the video to computer, my eyes feel a bit unease, because Im not able to see many things properly or read properly, because it is either a bit blurry or not able to read it, and if car pass by, then it will not be clearly visible. Do you know if I need to make any further adjustment. Im using shutter speed double the size of frames per second, that is for 30 - 60 as shutter speed. please help
Teşekkürler.
I really wish there was an option for Face Only AF, not just Face Priority. I really like when the focus holds when the subject leaves the frame. Great video btw!
I wonder what the best workaround for this would be. I have a button that switches from AF to MF, so perhaps that can be used as they are leaving and then turned back on when they re-enter? Perhaps we just max out the settings of subject tracking as well? Dunno.
The best video I have seen explaining AF for video on newer Sony cameras! This should be linked in the official camera manuals 😀
You are most kind! Thanks for your encouraging words!
couldnt have said it better! It's just spot on!
Wow Jacques this was probably the most informative video I've watched all year! Such great practical advice that I will surely be using in the field! Loving all the content. Keep inspiring us 💪😎
Aaaaah thanks Naeem, that really warms my heart! So grateful for your support, have an awesome holiday and happy shooting!

Bravo on this video. I’ve been looking for this answer for a few years now. Now I can actually start utilizing my camera.
Absolutely stunning short video, perfectly explained almost every basic things, with short and direct vide samples! :) I actually setting my new Sony FX30, and this is by far one of the best video for Sony AS i find:) without unnecessary sentences, off topics, etc. :) Great, thanks:)
Dude! This is one of the best vids I've seen on shooting video with Sony. Damn, I totally get it now, I was muddling through the settings not knowing how to get what i wanted. Thank you!
Yo Rick! Thanks man I'm so happy to hear that! Only a pleasure and thanks for supporting my channel!

Super useful video! 👊🏼
So glad, thanks for taking the time to comment Alex!
So amped to see this level of content coming out of South Africa ! You just keep nailing the most important topics for us. Thanks china !
Thank you. This has been so far the best class to learn the autofocus feature in my Sony camera. God bless
Jacques you are hands down my favorite creator on youtube. Your videos are so helpful!! Question - what is the best auto focus mode to use for multiple people in one shot? Just looking to keep everybody in focus and not one specific person with Eye AF. How should I go about this?
Jissie Jacques, you're killing it! Love the videos!
Lekker dude, thanks Gordon much appreciated!
Yet another fantastic video, Jacques.
Yeeeew thanks bra, dankie vir jou lekker BTS
Hello Jacques. Perfect video. Saved and watched many times! I would have one question. When I hold focus button square around eye or face wont turn green. It works fine, but it does turn green. I would rather it would turn green so I have visual confirmation. How do I set it up? Thank you very much
Did you work this out? Same issue on the A7iv in video mode
Same here, on my Sony A7IV half pressing the shutter button while filming even not holds focus. I cannot figure out to set this up. 😢
Thank you brother! Your vides have been really useful in prepping to use the Sony A systems.
One of the best AF tuts around! Helped me get up to speed with my new A7IV's AF setting really quickly! Thank you!!
So glad to hear that, thanks Arif hope you enjoy the new cam :)
I dont comment much but I love your videos mate! Actually the most useful ones and so well explained. Can't wait for more stuff like this. Every tip is usueful and to the point!
Then I'm super happy that you actually took the time to comment, thanks so so much!
Amazing channel Jacques! You should come shooting in Reunion Island: it ain't that far from South Africa, and the scenery is beautiful!
Thank you Kaycinho, I actually wanted to come this December with my wife and then all the lockdowns happened, still very excited to get out there soon!
@Jacques Crafford Nice! You and your wife will love it! Let me know when you do, via my channel (not many people speak English here so at least you'll know someone) 😀
Fantastic, this is the exact video I have been looking for!! Thanks brother!
So glad to hear that! You're welcome brother!
You killed this video mate. Thank you.
Yeeew thanks so much!
Hello! Thank you for your kind words. The grip used on the left side of the camera typically refers to the handgrip or handle that provides stability and control while shooting. It can vary depending on the camera model, but it often includes features like a textured surface for better grip, buttons for quick access to settings, the name of the handle, please? Thank
Which external monitor are you using ?
You just helped me with the autofocus tracking. Thanks!
Really glad to hear that! Thanks for letting me know! 😊
Thank you so much for making this video, Jacques! We just picked up the a7iv and are making the transition from shooting with our Samsung S21 Ultra. We didn't find the Sony documentation (what little there was...) very helpful, but this is AMAZING! 👏👏👏
Oh wow, that's a huge compliment! Thanks, so glad I could help :)
In a wedding setting what would be the best focus type to choose ?
Your videos are wayyyy better than other filmmaking educational content out there! How did I only find about you 3 days a ago!!! Please keep doin you!
Thanks Patrick, that really means a lot to me! Let’s do this 🙌🏻
I went from the original a7s 1 + manual lenses + Ronin-S to the a7IV + autofocus 28-75 all-rounder with a RS3 and it's like another dimension. It's so easy now to take shots that before were basically impossible. I was almost crying of joy during my first job with the a7IV using the gimbal when I got the focus right at the first take lol
What an upgrade, I can only imagine! AF really changed the game!
The best tut on the internet on Sony AF. Do you suggest FX3 over A7S3 for one man operation in music video?
Thank you Subhasis, I am so glad to hear that! Honestly no difference between those two cameras, the FX3 won't perform better it just has a few small usage advantages (in some scenarios) but nothing that will make any difference to the stuff that matters.
Thanks for the video.
What AF setting were you using. What was the AF sensitivity and speed set to?
Just what I was looking for, thank you
Excelente! Saludos desde Neuquén, Patagonia Argentina.
Thank you! Greetings from South Africa.🙏
I like your explanation not too rushed and very detailed
Yay glad to hear that. Thank you!
By far the best channel to learn about cinematic content production, not TH-cam Style videos, with hands on examples. Keep it up man 🔥🙌🙌🙌
That's a massive compliment, thanks man!!!
Great Video. You just helped me up my Focusing skills.
That's fantastic news! 🔥🔥
Ultimate Sony autofocus guide! Great! Thx
Yaaaaaay, thanks for your support!
Hi Jaques,
Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial. A question about the hold focus feature: the seems SO useful, but I cannot figure out how to turn it on so that soft pressing my shutter during video mode activates the hold focus. How did you do this?? Thank you!!
Wow thanks for the tips and I will definelty use autofocus on my A7IV more than I normally would.
You are most welcome! ☺️ Glad to hear it.
Many thanks brother. Love from India.
Thank you so much! 🔥
Good help as always!🐐
Only a pleasure, happy to hear you found it helpful!
Eye AF on the Sony A7SIII is like some kind of voodoo magic. I love it, too! Great video, man! New sub from me!
Thanks Dan, much apprecaited! Eye AF is a game changer for sure!
Thanx Jacques! This video is packed with great advise!
Yeeew thanks Riaan, so glad to hear that! Shot for the feedback!
So if you’re shooting a wide area & want to focus on the whole frame & not someone specific what’s the best options?
Thanks for this! Definitely needed this for solo work
Amazing stuff, thank you so much!
Wow, best Video in Sony AF, i Love Sonys Options.
Whoooohoooo, that makes me happy! Planning a whole lot more!
Absolutely love those features on my A7S III! Nice and useful video!
Thanks Maxim, you are most kind!
this has to be the best video out there on this topic
Gosh that's a big compliment, thank you!
Thanks!
Only a pleasure!
Great vid! Thanks, learned a lot :)
What side handle are using? Looks great to have the screen fully open. What parts from which brand?
Havr you found out what it is?
OMGosh so great to have discovered your channel - no hype, just straight up information. Thankyou!!
You're most welcome, I hope to keep it that way!
Ok so if walking through nyc and not trying to focus on anything or anyone specific meaning I just want the full screen to stay in focus, which settings are best?
God DAMN, you're actually a professional here on youtube! Thanks for sharing your precious tips :)
Really glad that you like my videos! 🔥
Always enjoying your videos Jacques! Great quality :)
Thanks man, really appreciate the feedback!
What a great video man, I think I said wow at least 4 times watching this. Thanks for this!
Thanks man, that means so much to me!
How do you set the shutter button to hold the focus? 🙏
Same question here, can’t figure out to do this on Sony A7IV
does anyone got an answer yet? :D
It's there by default in my sony a6700
Insane and very informative video!
I’ve got the A7III and it seems like the Eye-AF doesn’t work in video mode. Is that correct or do I just need to change some settings?
Would really appreciate your help!
I have the same question! Unless I heard it wrong but he has mentioned A7iii as example, and I saw they have eye AF on the screen.
Ok I have the A7iii and I am trying to stay focused on the same object while I am moving. When I press and hold the AF-on, it does it but only when I try to take a photo. The moment I press the video button, that stops working. Is there a way to enable that in video mode or when the video is being recorded? Am I the only person having this issue?
Real top proffessional tips!
So thankful for your content!
This is what I needed to get to the next level.
Yay that's wonderful to hear, thanks for taking the time to comment!
Thanks for your information very informative Video🙌❤️
Been a long time and I now have the FX30 and for focusing there are now 3 options. AF Tracking Sensitivity, AF Transition Speed, and Subject Shift Sensitivity? I have search and watched many of your videos and others but never saw anybody talking about all 3 of those options? Is that a new menu option? Or has it always been there and I never saw it. Anyways I usually just shoot people , actually models, and wondering what the best tracking Sensitivity should be set to on a usual basis? 1 (Locked) on, 2, 3 (Standard), 4, 5 (Responsive) ? Thanks!!!
nice i dont have camera but im willing to buy a7s3 someday i really like the auto foucs option in it
i love ur video keep the good work ♥
Thanks bro, the A7sIII is SOOO WORTH the investment, it's a game changer!
Useful tips!
Thanks for this great vide
Had a couple of quick questions about Tracking mode. How is it enabled? And the same for Touch Tracking?
nice work dude, and incredible work!
Thanks Jon, grateful for this feedback!
Wow ur one of my favorite tutor. Such a great information.
Can you tell me how to get side handle like your own. Becauss seems like very easy to touch the screen .
Thanks btw
Great tips! I'm interested in the handle and extension so you can hold it with open screen! Looks amazing, mind sharing which one is it? Thank you
Brilliant information!
Yeeew stoked! Thanks guys
What do you do if you want to put the camera on a gimbal? Do you need to remove the Small rig cage?
How do you deal with focus breathing on the A7S iii? Even with higher end lenses like the G 35 mm 1.4
Very helpful. I didn't know my camera could do that. I would love a video explaining SonyA7S3 filming features and the different effects of the variety of record settings and associated setting. How to receive the best results for slow motion.
You making fantastic tutorials, many thanks. Can you make please also tutorial how and when to use Dji RS3 Gimbal, which is one of the most popular gimbals today?🙏
So if you’re shooting a wide area & want to focus on the whole frame & not someone specific what’s the best options?
Super informative video, Jacques! Thanks for sharing with us.
So glad to hear that, thanks for your support Niklas!
most valuable explaining with footage examples
So glad to hear that, thanks for your kind words!
Wow! This is super helpful. Thank you Jacques. I am in the process of switching to Sony due to their incredibly accurate auto focus ability.
I'm soo happy to hear that thanks bro! Hope to share lots more with you thank you for supporting my channel!
Nice video... But what side handle is that? Been searching for one all over the internet and couldn't find one :)
Thanks Ciprian! That is the Cinevate Articulating Arm but sadly they don't make them anymore!
Hi Jacques, great tutorial as always, I love the handle you are using which helps access the touch screen, can you tell me what make it is? Keep up the amazing work, love it. P.
Thanks Paul! Aaah man unfortunately they don't make those anymore, it's an old Cinevate Articulating Arm but I searched everywhere :(
@@jacques_crafford hey Jacques, i actually screen grabbed a still from your tutorial and managed to work out the brand but then like you found out it doesn’t exist anymore! Anyway love your work, your tutorials are fantastic and really helped me plan my fashion this week, I even managed to add one of my smallrig handles to my rig to achieve the same as you. Thanks again for taking the time to reply. P.
Hi there just want to know how to adjust the MM( multi meter) to over expose plz thank you . On Sony A7 IV
Great tips! Thank you!🙏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks Arnold!
Hey Jacques, my Eye AF is disabled when in manual focus for videos. How did you do it. Thank you!
great vid! do you keep eye priority off when there is more than one person in the frame?
Hi Jacques, does the focus tracker work whilst shooting in 4k 120fps?
Hey Andy! Yes it does mate :)
what better focus to use with the dji gimbal. autofocus or single focus? while I walk with my Gimbal
Great video mate. Now I have to put it into practice. I'm curious about the side handle you are using on the Smallrig cage, what is it?
This is an incredibly valuable video. I just ordered an A7IV, and discovered your channel looking for information on best practices and settings for the camera to have a starting point. This will be my first time using a Sony, so a lot to learn and was so excited to find your channel! Already subscribed and look forward to seeing more content like this as I continue to going through your previous videos.
Thanks Michael, so grateful for feedback like this! I think you're gonna love that camera! Hope you enjoy the videos to come :)
Thank you! This is great!
I am glad to hear that, thank you!😄
Hello,
Recently I have acquired the PZ 16-35mm F4 G lens and noticed some focus jump/focus pulse too fast while using this lens with Autofocus enabled on my A7S3 body.
Mine seems to have the issue when I use gimbal to go in closer to the subject's face, it seems to have that zoom pump, but it is actually the focus going error for a very fast milliseconds (or looks like focusing the back of the subject in mine), and then slowly focus back to the subject, and it is quite frequent. Or sometimes it would just make that whole scene to have the shaking stutter effect for a millisecond, I had even set the focus shift sensitivity to the lowest, and it still does the same thing. For the body I'm currently using A7S3.
Attached here is an example (not my video, but a clip I manage to found online which has the same issue as mine), look at the table at the bottom area and you'll understand what I meant:
th-cam.com/video/DqZnYqg3zRA/w-d-xo.html
For your information, the aperture and shutter speed settings are in manual, AND Subject Shift Sensitivity and Focus Speed Settings are set to the lowest already.
Much appreciated for your replies, thank you.
Thanks man, your tutorials are the best... Learn something every time.. Is that half press automatically set in the FX3... That is a nifty trick and also in Manual focus mode, if I half press it also will autofocus until I let go? Thank you!!!
Yay only a pleasure! So glad you find it helpful. Yeah I think the Half Press is standard on the FX3 also
Thank you so much. Is there an option to keep " hold focus " without having to keep pressing the shutter ?
Great video! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks brother!
When you’re in front of larger crowds say at an event or wedding, would you prefer switching to manual focus to make sure the AF is not jumping across too many subjects?
Yeah I'd probably use tap to focus unless it's close to the bridal party, in that case I would register the bride and the groom's face to make sure it stays on them :)
