    Great video! One thing that took me ages to realize is that if you want to record 4K back up video to the card inserted in the slot 2, you need a larger capacity (at least 64 gb) SDXC UHS-1 card. I spent ages trying to figure out why my 32 gb SDHC UHS-1 Sandisk Extreme PRO card would not allow that for backup video, but would work fine in slot number 1!

    Yes you can shoot in that mode no problem but it does affect a couple of other things which I am finding out one is you can’t give it any frame lines which is OK because with this camera don’t seem to want to use them. I’m just playing around with it now to see what else it affects when in M mode

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right, that will affect some video-specific features. The framing will change as you hit record, and you won't have audio until you hit record.

    Good overview! In addition to Clear Image Zoom, with a full frame lens Super 35 mode extends its reach.

    Can you talk more about the different record settings (30p 50M)? When would you use the highest settings?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you have a specific need for an alternate frame rate, I would always use 30 - as nearly all displays agree on that as a common refresh standard. For the second, I always use the highest data rate. I've purchased a high quality camera and I want high quality results. If I thought 50M was good enough, I'd buy a less expensive model.

    Great help! I am a canon shooter. I recently migrated to Sony since my Canon camera's sensor broke!! I moved to Sony cuz I wanted to go mirrorless and wanted the ability to shoot 4K as well. I am conducting interviews this on Friday and these tips are very helpful! Thank you Maarteen! Any additional tips to shoot interviews will be great.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words, appreciated. How does a sensor break?
      Use all manual settings, as I assume there will be some editing. Manual white balance, manual ISO, manual focus, manual audio level (although Sony doesn't really allow this - but I mean turn the recording level down, otherwise it will start high with lots of compression and then slowly turn down to get to the right level.
      Any other suggestions I have would be based on style. Personally, I always shoot at eye level and (assuming it's one person talking) position myself just to the right (or left, alternating if there are multiple interviews) of the camera.
      However, I would select the positioning of the chairs carefully to take advantage of natural light, I would use external mics and position them (shotgun or lav) carefully and monitor the sound with headphones while recording. Record "room tone" for editing.
      Hope this helps.

      I mean I ended up with a shot sensor! I took it to a camera store and they said the sensor is shot, contact Canon. I did that and they said it is dead!!!!!!

    You are a terrific reporter and your tips are extraordinary. I am so very impressed by your approach. I am planning to do a series of video interview shoots with two Sony A7's---one a Mark II and one a brand-new Mark III... one I'll use for wide shots and one I'll use for close ups on my main interview subject. I'll be purchasing lights, an audio mixer, and probably a new wired lav to go with the wired lav I already have. If you ever come to New York, I'd love for the opportunity to get together.

    Just a question: how can i set my Fuji x-t10 to record a full HD video @ 30fps without getting image blinking while using low consume lights with a frequency of 50 Hz?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your kind words, always appreciated. Well, you could change the lighting, or the location where you're shooting. If that's not possible, lowering the shutter speed can (sometimes) reduce or eliminate the effect. Try 1/50 or 1/40 to see if that helps.

    Hi Maarten I figured it out today how to get the Facial tracking in 4K to work on the A7R 3 I was filming downtown today with a producer who actually owns that camera and so we were talking about it and for some crazy reason he like to shoot in the manual mode on his camera. So that got me thinking about trying manual mode and seeing if the facial tracking will work and yes it does. So I believe that there is a firmware glitch in the system that Sony has to update to make it work on the film setting. I will email Sony and let them know about this.

      For just general focus on moving subjects, I would turn on face detect (as you want the faces in focus) and then use AF-C with wide. A smaller aperture (larger F-number) can also help with focus.

    Hi there, great tutorial. Question, whats the reasoning behind turning steadyshot off if you’re using the camera on a tripod? Is it simply to save battery?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I appreciate your kind words. Great question, and good thought, but it's not about battery. The issue is that on a tripod, when you're trying to create a smooth move (pan, tilt, whatever) steady shot will fight the move for a fraction of a second and then jump so that the move isn't smooth.

    Why would you recommend 30p? Is the intent for the footage to look 'videoy'?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This video is intended for a novice viewer. I assume that the video will be displayed on a 30p (or multiple thereof) device. Using 30p creates fewer artifacts, so provides a cleaner look. If you can see the difference between a 24p recording and a 30p recording when viewed on a TV, video or computer screen, then you likely don't need my guidance.
      A cinematic or video look is created by lighting and the use of picture profile settings, possibly the shutter speed, so the frame rate isn't a very big factor.

    Shooting in Log allows you to optimize exposure for the highlights...

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not agree with that statement. Log allows you to increase the dynamic range - whether you choose to optimize for highlights or shadows is up to you. However, as I pointed out in another video: th-cam.com/video/1P8pIKYBmP0/w-d-xo.html using Log to increase the dynamic range may reduce quality if there isn't a need to do so.

    • @theshortlist
      @theshortlist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      your video is called BEST VIDEO SETTINGS... not using LOG is a choice, and a good one in a lot of environments.. but, with a scene with a lot of contrast... using LOG and exposing for highlights (using zebra) is a probably a better option...

    Thanks for an excellent video. I am venturing into video in order to shoot footage of my son surfing. Is it correct that you cannot use lock on AF in the movie mode? • @MaartenHeilbron

      I haven't used proxy files, as my iMac seems to be able to handle the 4K originals without problems. So maybe this is worth further examination and a video (thanks in advance for the suggestion). My understanding is that you need an editor that supports this technique. You first use the proxy files to create your edit, and then tell the editor to use the actual files to perform the output render. You may need fairly pro software (like Final Cut or Premiere) to be able to do this.
      My view is that, in camera, they're most useful to do a quick upload to social media.

    Maarten, I really love your videos--always excellent and economical in time.
    I do have a question or two, after a short comment.
    I have noticed that shooting with auto ISO in situations with stable light the camera yields excellent exposure, leaving me to concentrate on correct MF and framing, etc.
    Normally I shoot with FD lenses and manual ISO. But I find in run and gun situations and other such situations with stable light auto ISO helps me get a lot more shots---and while not always perfect in every circumstance the exposure is every bit good enough to easily correct in post.
    One thing I haven't tested is how to quickly get a stable exposure if light isn't stable.
    My guess is to quickly turn on exposure compensation--like clicking on -1, or +1. Not sure if that will stabilize the exposure or if it will continue changing even with compensation on.
    I didn't find an exposure lock on the camera. Is there one?
    But generally I see no reason to routinely shoot a relatively high % of video in auto ISO...maybe even in Log gammas using exposure compensation--if it's stable.
    What do you think?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated. Not sure why, but TH-cam truncated your comment before you got to the question ... could you please repost, or reply with the rest of your question. I'll start by agreeing with your observation. As Sony has added more power to AutoISO, the feature has become increasing more useful.

    • @avarmadillo

      I'm going to assume you got at least the first paragraph. Here are the last two:
      Normally I shoot with FD lenses and manual ISO. @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again, TH-cam has cut you off - but I agree with your assessments. In general I find exposure adjustments to be fairly fast and not too obvious. With dramatic lighting changes, I expect viewers to provide some critical leeway.
      I don't think exposure compensation has any effect on the adjustments made by the AutoISO system - it's just an overall adjustment.

    Hi Maarten I like your tutorial and I figured you're the guy to ask. I am a DP in Toronto and am new to the DSLR world. I purchase the Sony A7R3. My question is I can't get the white box to stay on in 4K for face detection It comes on for a fraction of a second then goes away. I did turn on the AF Face priority and the Face direct Frame display. I was wondering if you knew how to keep that box on it would be helpful when I use a gimbal. By the way I did do the upgrade to the new firmware.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words, and your confidence. Face detect has improved, but remains somewhat flakey, particularly for some faces and subjects wearing glasses. My solution is to stack the flexible spot in approximately the same area, hope this helps. But for as good as the AF is, my preference is manual - which I use whenever I can.

    Thank you for details. Have a question, I am trying to shoot video with 60FPS 50MB settings but video looks like a normal and not slow motion in A7III. Same is the case when I shoot it using 120FPS with 100MB. Please let me know why I am not able to get a slow motion video in both these cases?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are shooting at those frame rates using the standard video recording mode, you will need to slow it down in post, by reducing the speed to 50% (for 60 frames) and 25% (for 120 frames) - that leaves you with 30 frames per second in the final production.
      There is an in-camera slow motion capability, the lower quality S&Q mode, which does not record audio, but does create the slow motion playback in camera.
      Hope this helps.

    Thanks this is a great video. I'm new to video recording and this helps a lot. I understand that for recording 30p at 100Mb(its) mean 12.5 MB(ytes) and the 95 MB card can well handle recording. But will the 95MB/s card with probably 90 (or less) MB/s write, take a long time to upload to a computer for editing, or am I thinking in still photography?

      How kind of you to say, thanks! That's correct - divide by 8 for bits to bytes (not sure why the card manufacturers and camera companies can't agree to use one or the other). The time to transfer files to your computer depends on a number of factors. It certainly shouldn't take more than a few minutes.

      The meat of my question is about the transfer rate for the file. So, a 30 minute hd file (Sony 7RIII) is smaller that 500 uncompressed raw photo files and would take significantly less time to transfer?

      The transfer rate is the same - it doesn't transfer in real time. Math says that a 30 minute file will be about 20 GB. I don't know your system, so I can't predict how long it will take 20GB to transfer.

      got it! We're not talking about still uncompressed files at 82MB a pop. Thanks for your quick response. Now I can distinguish between what cards I need for video and what I need for sport still shots. This will help my wallet!

      I recommend and use SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB UHSII cards, but the A7R III doesn't need that for video, and it only helps a bit with burst (still takes over a minute to unload the buffer).
