- In this video I perform an oil change on a 2012 328i. This car is equipped with the n20 engine. I am using 5L of Synthetic 0w-30 oil purchased from my local dealership.
For info on how much oil for your car I use this site:

Great video! I used it to change my own oil for the first time in my life and it was super easy to follow. The only gotcha I had was discovering that the oil plug on my xDrive GT is different (17mm socket made of metal with a copper washer) and kudos to those who pointed out the correct gasket position on the oil filter cap. I will never be paying to have my oil changed again!
I have a 2014 328i Xdrive and my oil plug is also a metal screw with a copper washer
You sound like me talking about my car haha ‘this guy goes to this guy, which powers this guy’..love it.
Thanks for the video thought it was a good job, but from my experience you seem to have made it a little harder for yourself regarding the filter part. I believe it would be easier to put on the O-rings first then slip on the filter. Other than that it has helped me out for when it's time for me to do my oil change.
You got balls bro, trusting your life to some cheap ass $40 plastic ramps. I read some Amazon reviews and some collapsed while a car was on top of it! YIKES!
the weight of the car would kill him
I was shocked twice. When i saw the sockets hit the body and when i saw how filthy that oil was.
shookened
It's the hood of the ratty old BMW next to the F30, take a look at the beginning of the video before you get your panties in a bunch.
Am I the only one who got super triggered when he slammed the bag of sockets on the hood? :(
Sheeeeeesh same here
I think that is his daily driving BMW or something. It's not the same one he was working on. The paint is flat paint, and looked more beat up than the one he was doing an oil change on.
nope his badge condition bothered me too
why are you guys getting bothered by a 30 year old car that clearly looks like it has problems with everything, not to even mention the horrible condition of the paint, if it was a clean car then yes, i'd be bothered.
do a oil change and paint the car as well!
Nice simple video, as far as the plastic ramps I’ve been using them for years and never had an issue, for added safety though it wouldn’t be a bad idea to add two jack stands under each side to prevent a possible collapse. Overall good job!
Cool, I have to change my 328I oil soon
Great video! Was going to get the same ramp to do mine. Just a quick question!.
If we use that ramp, the car is tilted at an angle. Would that cause the oil to not fully drain out? How can you get all the old oil out?
Thank you
The drain plug should be in the rear so tilted up should be fine.
I love reading comments on oil change videos. Wow you guys its a damn oil change video these comments are hilarious🤣. Not using bmw oil use this do this do that.. its his car, let him use castrol or amsoil or liqui moly. I use amazon basics european formula, its because its cheap, bmw long life crap isn’t necessary, i guarantee none of you guys are doing 10k oil intervals on your bmws.
I had to go out and purchase a 10mm hex key socket for my new used BMW. I assume BMW changed from a bolt to a hex key so I didn't need the additional washer that came with the filter. But thanks for video, very helpful to know the hex key size.
Great video, surprisingly easy oil change compared to most
great video bro. did the oil change on my friend's f30 yesterday. i just wanna add a note that you should dip the tip of the new drain plug into oil before installing. it felt weird installing that plastic drain plug dry like that....
another note, not smart on bmw to have a plastic drain plug.
Gracias Mathew
Thanks for making vid, got my 328i and scheduling oil change in my own garage shop :-)
No problem! I'll try to get more DIY vids for F30 up soon!
That would be great, I like to do most maintenance on my own to - that's when you really appreciate and value how vehicle is built. All the best
Thanks for the video. Feel much better about changing it myself now
thank you for the video! Have you had any issues with the timing chain with your car?
not yet, noticed some slack. No serious whine yet but I plan to have it done probably within the next 10k miles. I've gotten quotes from independent shops for $2.4k including labor
lol, I want the dip stick back!
I can do this for a 2016 BMW 320i drive? And great video
Gracias por tu video hermano 🇨🇴🇺🇸
Great video Did you have to replace the drain just wondering thanks
Yes I always get a new drain plug as the RWD n20 ones are plastic and are one time use.
Matthew Wong , where did you buy the drain plug?
Just a nitpick, it's supposedly best to fill the filter housing with some oil before putting the new filter in
Thanks! Yeah i usually do that now with all my oil changes.
Anyone knows how to take out the cap from below if it’s stripped? 😢 I’ve been trying for hours
Oil drain plug is stripped?
Yup, I went to the store to get a full set of Allen wrenches and none worked, it keeps slipping 😓
I wish you would have mention what size of hex key you need to open the drain plug.
Tauqir Ahmed size 10 he said
@@bmwsincekid yep, i figured it out after i spent $30 and 3 trips to autozone. Lol first i brought 17mm haha then 10mm wasn't fitting because that plastic plug is squeezed inward when it is tight. I went to buy 9mm,off course it didn't fit, but then got frustrated and hammered in 10mm, finally.
Thanks for the video. I noticed that you had placed the large of ring back incorrectly. Review your video and you'll see.
Yeah :) it was installed the previous time incorrectly and i got the new one installed correctly at the end of this vid. The previous install caused the ring to crimp and get damaged. Nice catch!
Thanks for pointing this out! Was very helpful
how many kilometers to change the original bmw oil ? bmw n47
did you forget to install the oil drain plug? Thats the most important part in my opinion.
😂 i just realized i didn't cut the video for that in after all this time. Thanks for catching that
The extra part that comes with the oil filter, is that a new drain plug? You didn’t mention it or show it in the video.
The extra part that comes with the oil filter is the plastic drain plug for the n20 engines. If you have an xDrive car it will be a metal one. I totally forgot to mention it in this video and I discuss it in my new oil change overview that I made.@@jeffreyshapiro3520
Matthew Wong where’s the new oil change vid? Can I get link cause I can’t find it lol
@@MadeManKev It should be this guy th-cam.com/video/qzwz5JbgF9k/w-d-xo.html
No adding of Oil Into the Housing Prior to installing the Cap?
Now Yes we are suppose to put Tad Oil Along and around the Bigger Seal..but isn't there a step missing of Oil Added to the Housing Prior to putting the Cap back on tight?Just asking..
Thank you, awesome video for oil change good job
Nice video i am thinking of buying bmw328 or mercedes c300 2015/2016 can you help me with an advice 🤔
I was deciding between the two also! Except 2012 for each. The 2015 C300 are very nice interior wise. But I always felt BMW's were more responsive and had better driving feel. Honestly you should research long term reliability of both engines. I only know of the n20 (328i) which has issues dealing with
- timing chain (Used high mileage)
- blown turbos
so I would highly recommend having someone look at those if your looking at used cars.
BMW replaced this engine in the LCI of the car as well. (Just heads up)
Matthew Wong thanks for your reply i think i am going for c300 cause its more reliable than bmw and have much nicer interior and Mercedes parts in my country are cheaper than bmw thank u 😇
hi, the torq of the oil plug ?
where can i buy the plastic Ramp ? whats the height ?thank you
Well explained with all the details. Thanks
What oil should you i use for my bmw f30 316i year 2014 thanks
Hey friend i need that jacking eqipman for into the bottom of the car. İts urgent . İ cant find that lifting tools
Do you have to change oil filter every oil change?
I believe BMW recommends changing the filter every oil change.
yes you do. and should do.
Yes
Is that oil good for hot area
Not entirely sure. Perhaps consult with local dealer? f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=954409
Does the 3 series bumper scrape the ramps while driving on and off them? I'm looking into buying the same exact ramps, but you cut the video right in the interesting part :)
The ramps I use currently do not scrape! There should be enough clearance.
@@MatthewWong are they the same ones as in the video?

Just curious, are the oil drain plug and oil pan made of plastic? or are they both metal?
on non xDrive cars for the n20 engine the oil pan and drain plug are plastic. On the xDrive the oil pan and oil drain plug is made out of metal.
Matthew Wong so can i put the metal oil drain plug and pan to the non x drive model, we got one and i am not a fan of plastic parts on such important area of a car
No I do not believe the parts are interchangeable. And yeah I totally get your concern with the plastics on integral parts. Ask BMW why the timing chain guides are plastic as well lol. When you do install your new plastic drain plug (a new one is required each oil change) make sure to torque to spec and do not over tighten. If you strip the threads on your plastic oil pan its going to be a much costlier job.
lol was wondering bout the chain guides too, hope my religious oil change interval of 5k miles helps, and thx for the tip!
Nice demonstration. About the chain guides, I've seen 200k km guides and they had very little wear, could've lasted another 200k, also the chain. So it is not bad design, I think. It was on n43 engine. Can't say anything about the plastic oil pan. How often do you change the oil?
Nice job!!! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
At the end it is like watching paint dry or oil drain.
You guys did'nt notice
Always double check - second look to prevent mistake,. you place the new Engine oil filter Oring on a wrong side..
I had put it on the wrong ring in a prior oil change before this video so when I take it off it is in the incorrect spot. During the install, I put it in the correct slot. You can double check online anywhere to see this. Here is one from the e90 and its exactly the same. www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/BMW-3-Series-E90/BASICS-Changing_Engine_Oil/images_med/pic06.jpg
I have the N13 engine and it uses 4.25L of oil. I could only drain out around 3.5L each time. Are you able to drain out all 5L of oil from your n20 engine? I am concern about overfilling as I read that it could cause problems. Just wondering?
Sorry, I don't know too much about the n13 engine. But for my N20 I am able to drain all the oil each time.
@@MatthewWong According to the manufacture N20 engine takes 5.2L

Pep Boys has them.
can you use 10w-30? or will that mess up the engine?
recommened viscosity for N20 engine is 5w-30.
for colder climate 0w-30.
10w30 would be a bit heavy, but probably not going to mess up the engine.
Hello, I am debating to buy a 2014 320i. It has 54,000 miles on it... any advice ?
I would have the engine checked over. Check for timing chain whine. If possible buy with CPO warranty for peace of mind. Otherwise just general things like
- how often were oil changes done
- general maintenance items
hi I have the exact same car, 2013 65000 miles. when it says service, in another 4000 miles or so, do I only have to change the oil and filter?
Yes, the typical oil change will require new: oil, filter, and drain bolt (plastic on non xDrive cars).
@@MatthewWong so besides oil and filter change, is there any others thing I have to pay attention to? or unless the car shows something needs to be replaced then replace it? Thanks
@@danforyou1 at 65k miles there are many things that may need to be done depending on previous maintenance history. At 65k miles I would probably do all the following: www.driverside.com/service-schedule/detailview/bmw-3_series-2013-59914-130366-344882?mileage=65000 most of which are just inspection items. Making sure theres no beyond normal wear outside the oil change and oil filter.
additionally I would probably have the air filter changed (depending on when that was last done), flushed the brake fluid which BMW recommends every 2 years, and depending on driving history probably have done spark plugs. Kies Motorsport has a great instructional on it here: th-cam.com/video/r68aNUBYUnE/w-d-xo.html
Besides that just making sure that tires are rotated and have tread, brake pads are good, all lights are functional thats pretty much it at 65k miles. Some things you might want to watch out for is the "timing chain whine" on n20 engines which is an early sign of the timing chain stretching however that is pretty rare in terms of % of occurrence in n20 engines. You can find more info on the timing chain on bimmerposts forums.
In summary, pretty much the oil, oil filter, air filter are the immediate items followed by spark plugs and brake fluid flush. Then from there its just things that if the car shows something needing to be replaced.
Is it necessary to use the filter wrench to reinstall the oil filter on this car?
I would recommended using a torque wrench to get the correct specs of 25nm. However if you don't have one a good hand tight should work. Don't over tighten as its plastic.
I was hoping to see you torque your sump plug back on 🤔 8nm is not much. I bought a bicycle torque wrench makes it easier and safer.
Ah I did not have a torque wrench that size. Usually for all my oil drain bolts I do not torque them back on as I've seen many overdone and stripped oil drain pans. Usually a good hand tight fit will do just fine especially for 8nm. However having one is definitely nice!
Matthew Wong I did the opposite, I over torqued the plug last time without a wrench and had to get my mechanic to get it off, took him an hour! The plug was ruined but the plastic sumps are quite tough thankfully. Bicycle tourque wrench should sort that out hopefully lol
Oh shoot! I gotta keep that in mind ive never seen it where the plug actually gets stuck. I'll def check out a bike torque wrench thanks for the tip!
You don't need a torque wrench here. Just do it by a feeling. When it stops then that's it, no more tightening...
Forgot the part were you put the screw back on after seetting the filter
Haha totally forgot to film that part. :P
How many miles between oil changes?
I do every 6-7 months with the change of season
Motoring Mikey supposed to be every 3k-5k miles depending on how many miles the car has
Nice video 👍
What size tool did you use to remove the oil drain plug?
10mm hex
If you have an xDrive, it will be a 17mm hex
Just a quick question, why biy the exspensive Bmw oil why not just use high end oil like Castrol edge etc
I get them discounted from my local dealership for around the same price as Castrol or Mobil 1
@@MatthewWong
Fair play, over here in the U.K Castrol edge Bmw spec i found the cheapest to be around £32.50 for 4 litre bottle while Bmw oil i found it for £20 per litre.

Where did you buy these Bmw oil?
I bought it at my local BMW dealership
WOW that is BLACK. Do you still have this car?
Yeah still have the car. The engine oil gets incredibly dark after just 7.5k miles. And BMW's original intervals were 15k miles. I change my own oil every 5k miles.
I’m looking at buying 2013 328i manual sedan. Would you this car? Also do you know if servicing your car or getting it serviced in between BMW maintenances void warranties in any way?
A manual is always a good choice. The automatic will get better MPG but in my opinion the manual will depreciate less. I would get the manual over the automatic. Servicing the car in between maintenance will not void the warranty. @@TwoOnesTanks

Matthew Wong thank you so much.
That oil is SUPER dirty. I would cut that interval in half!!
It crazy my dealer doesn’t even use the bmw oil
bmw don't make oil. they are supplied by Castrol (at least in USA).
What color is your car tho?
Imperial Blue Metallic
Whats up with the music...?
0:58, that looks extremly black.. my mercedes with 200kmiles looks new compared to that and its 4 years older..I would recommend sea foam.
Haha I thought i was super dark also! Glad i'm not the only one who thinks so. But i think it was the lighting that day when i shot this video. After i pulled the pan out from draining and dipped my fingers in, the oil was still considerably gold when looked at with a light.
Sounds like someone has been doing the BMW recommended 15 000miles oil change intervals which is rated for the genuine BMW oil and even then that is just absurd, oil degrades and loses its properties after 6 months regardless of the miles.
I actually advocate very hard for 5000 mile oil changes. I do not follow the BMW service intervals they are ridiculous 15k miles! I change every 6 months because i drive only 10k miles a year at most.
and the oil that came out look extremly black, I would definitly put some seafoam in the oil before the next oil change, just put half a bottle in the oil and idles it for 30 mins then drain the oil, do this for a few oil changes and you should be good and clean.
I'll give it a shot on my next change and i'll try to get a video of the change after that to do a comparison vid?
That ending with the oil draining slow motion was so unnecessary
totally
Why 0-30?
the N20 engine accepts 5w-30 and 0w-30 as different grades of oil for the engine. I am choosing a lighter weight oil because the area I am in during the winter until about mid-summer is very cold. This way the oil does not take as much warm up time to reach optimal viscosity as compared to the 5w-30. Hope this answers your question. Thanks for watching!
Matthew Wong everywhere else it states 0w-40, are you in a cold climate? Edit: I see that you are in a cold area
0W-40 works as well in the N20. Yes my wintertimes are very cold where I live and last until early summer.
Matthew Wong ok, nice job
Heres more info on the oils: www.bimmerworld.com/BMW-Engine-Oil/
"...In 2016 BMW announced new 0W30 to replace 5W30. 0W30 carries the same LL-01 approval with a FE label, making it backwards compatible but also making newer models more fuel efficient..." I also confirmed this with my dealer when buying the oil. Edit: Not sure if this is helpful or not? hopefully it is! Thanks!
Ll-01?
Adrian Sz bmw long life -01 is the standard for newer BMWs i believe for my 15 328i it requires the oil to meet long life

Thanks man!
Takes 7L not 5
Ive seen 4-6 quarts on the forums. However most sources ive seen call for 5L or 5.3 quarts. I'd be very interested to see where you got 7L?
5 ltrs is correct, who told you 7?
That oil is too thin for that engine
I believe F30 328i recommned oil is 5w-30 full synthetic.
I think Castrol is OEM supplier (it says so on the oil cap), but not sure which one.
Castrol has several 5W-30's that they sell.
