Like your videos but this is just hearsay information. What are your sources that Shell/Pennzoil 5w40 is the exact same as the BMW 5w40? Also, BMW switched over to using the LL-17 rated 0W20 for emissions, performance but mostly to help combat startup wear on the timing chain components. No, they’re not the same oils. Similar in numbers but not in additive pack or base oils. Now, a BMW oil IS rated to go the 10,000+ miles than the cheaper versions of Castrol 5w30/40. Castro’ls own higher performance synthetics, about on par. As for the oil filter, that plastic drain plug only applies to the RWD models. xDrive models have a metal oil pan with metal drain plug. The Mann part number is different as it comes with the two filter housing seals and a brass crush washer for the drain plug. Great video production as always, just incorrect/biased information.

Thanks for sharing especially on the AWD models. I'm always happy to learn form a fellow enthusiast. Looks like I'll have to look into 0-20 if it's easier on the engine and better for gas why not

@@FritzRamos oil viscosities are an interesting science! Traditional thinking is that a thicker viscosity oil will last long and reduce engine wear, which it does to an extent. The idea behind better flowing lower viscosity oils is that the great deal of wear for newer engines is from lack of oil, oil flow and lubricity. For such a high performance engine that produces a lot of waste heat, the new Corvette C8 uses 0w20. Mind boggling haha

@@FritzRamos not necessarily. If you drive sporty on that 0w-20 oil, you’ll burn oil. The full saps that’s in the castrol oils that’s rated for the longlife 01 spec is perfect for a sporty drive style or soothing peaceful ride. If you want good cold start up oil flow and high protection, then run a 0w-40 oil that’s rated for the longlife 01 spec.

@@DuckMcDuckinson I run 0w-40 Liquid Moly in my X3. People don't understand what the numbers mean. I run 40 over 30 because I live in Virginia and it is hot in the summer and I also do plenty of stop and go driving and 40 has better high temperature protection. 0 is great for cold weather starts. I might check out 5w-40 but will definitely stick with the higher temp protection because of where I live

@@FritzRamos hey fritz! I got a question. Last oil change I put 5.25 qts of oil in my engine and it read full on the screen. I noticed when I was changing the motor mounts one day that the drain plug had evaporation on it and I checked the level when I finished the mounts and it read quarter of a way down. Funny. Drove until the next change and the level was still the same as the last time I did the oil level check. The engine on idle was smooth but I could hear the combustion of the engine a little almost like it had piston slap but not harsh. Thought it was because the oil I used was heavier than the one I used before. Cars temperatures were amazing as well. I went to measure just how much oil came out of the engine with a measuring pitcher and it was 4.2 qts…….. note I put in 5.2 and the sensor didn’t say that it was a quart low. I know it’s not the sensor because I put in 4.7 yo be safe and it read halfway but then I put in half a quart top off it read full. Did 0.7 quarts really come out of the engine through the drain plug? I’m using AMSOIL so I know it’s not the oil because the car still drove perfect.

I feel as if I did over tighten the plug but I checked the plug to see if the threads messed up and it was perfect and the o-ring was good too. Now I use a torque wrench to make sure it’s at 8 NM.

@@DuckMcDuckinson I would account for some oil to be taken up by the filter. For the rest, check your turbo inlet pipe and see if you have blow by in there

I have a 2014 BMW 228i RWD ATM. I know from factory it was 5w30, but I called the BMW dealership and they said BMW themselves switched it to 0w30. So I just said screw it and bought 5w30 Schaeffer's Advanced European Performance, it has LL-01 spec. I commute about 100miles a day for work. It just turned Spring here in Alaska so while its warm I hope the oil will work its magic and coat its innerds. (Micron-molly and Penetro) A combination patented by Schaeffer's exclusive to them.

Good to know. I know they switch with later versions of the F30, but I'm not sure what the actual data is with models rated for 5w30. Going thinner is supposed to lubricate better and be better on gas, but if you're happy with 5w-30 then keep using it.

I've recently moved to Liqui Moly Special Tec 5w30 and Mann filter, but I bought it from FCP Euro, who offer lifetime warranty, including liquids 😀
I have an N26 and my local dealer had updated my service intervals to 8k miles. So I've been changing my oil every 4k.
The only hassle will be shipping them back my old used oil but if it gets me liqui moly for the life of owning this car, I don't think there's anything else that can beat that deal

@@FritzRamos Damn thx for the quick response!! I'm from Montreal so we have hot climates in summers and very cold winters. The thing is that I think I have a broken gasket or something so I'm loosing a lot of oil in leaks. So I bought some 0w30 to ad when needed. This morning I coldstarted my car and their was a LOT of smoke coming out of my engine, tailpipe and in the cabin but the blue gray smoke stop when I drive. I recently had some coolant and later that day check my oil level and my problem is that I don't know if I need to had oil in the engine ( where you remove the oil cap ) it seems like only the chains are lubricated a bit but I can see the bottom with no oil. I can't check my oil level because I don't have a freaking stick and need to drive/warm my engine to check oil level. But I'm too scared to drive with low engine oil and blow up my BMW. Sorry for the long comment but can you help? What would you do? It's a 328i 2013 F30 btw
