Harbor freight sells a compact hydraulic car jack. It's pretty small. It slides under your can and it is super low profile. Turn on the hydraulic pump and it easily lifts the car at least 4 ft. Cost between 5 or 600 and it's awesome
NEVER use grease on rubber grommets or flange adaptors - use SILICONE SPRAY LUBE instead - it protects and revitalizes the rubber, keeping it supple and pliable, preventing it from drying out, cracking, or tearing. 10.40: this item is also called the fuel vapour detection pump. This must be what's causing my engine light, plus the fuel smell. Thanks for the excellent tip. Keep up the great work. 👍🏿
No you most likely have a leak. The DMTL is simply a vacuum pump that puts the system under vacuum so that the engine computer can monitor for decay and flag leaks. If you smell fuel, remove rear seat lower cushion. There will be a black fibrous noise insulator. Lift that, and you will find the access doors to the fuel filter module, and the fuel pump. Focus on the driver side one. The access door is secured by four 8mm screws. Undo those, lift that cover, and you will most likely find that the fuel filter module, is leaking fuel. It will be puddled with gasoline. To replace one, you must remove both sides, as the module has lines that connect to the fuel pump on the right side. VDO is the OEM supplier and they sell a kit which brings everything you need to replace it.
Always remember at any time you are jacking up your vehicle with a jack or jack stand to chock block your wheels so the vehicle doesn't roll off the lift device you are using. Thanks for sharing this video Christian! It makes sense to maintain your vehicle's parts that are known to fail and the parts used to reduce damage lifting your vehicle in order to do maintenance. Wish all cars had jack pads like that. Though I will say here in Vermont, salt and dirt would get inside the rockers, rot out those mounting spots, and eventually you wouldn't even be able to use those areas, hah. Good spot to pop out the pads and spray rust prevention inside the rockers though!

Had to replace the DTML pump on my '04 M3 just this past year. Jack pads fall out regularly, every BMW I know is missing some. As for the Jack pad adaptor... aluminum???... just cut up a hockey puck. Works PERFECTLY!!
I'm sure you already know but check your jack stands to see if they have been recalled. There is a big recall on Harbor Freight jack stands. Not knocking HF, it's just a very big safety issue if they were to fail.

I've been very active on two big BMW forums for many, many years. I have never heard of anyone having to replace that leak detection pump. The BIG issues are the trifecta of oil leaks (valve cover, oil filter housing, oil pan) the "mickey mouse flange" in the cooling system, the little hose from the radiator to the coolant reservoir, and the serpentive belt tensioner and the carnage that happens when the belt comes off and gets sucked through the front crank deal. have a '11 328i wagon (6spd/rwd as God intended) I have owned from new, and an '11 128i convertible currently. And a bunch of other BMWs over the years. Jack pads don't fail if the car is jacked up properly. Of course, idiots don't jack them up properly. Hockey pucks work fine for jacking up the car without damaging the pads.
My DMTL pump failed several days after buying my E90 328i, unfortunately. At least it was a easy fix. And just 2 days ago, I messed up 1 of the jacking points. So this was uploaded at just the right time.

It is good to change your detection pump every 80,000 miles and I would recommend changing your vapor canister (charcoal filter) at the same time. They get real dirty and it is attached to the detection pump anyway.
If you don’t have a jack pad adapter then you could also remove 2 wheels and then slide them underneath those side skirts. This will save your life if the jack fails or tips over. I get lazy sometimes so i just put the jack stands about a 1/4” below those plastic pads. I use one of those blue aluminum racing jacks from Harbor Freight. Those jacks don’t budge even after months lol. The jack stands then wouldnt damage those plastic things but at the same time would save my life if there happens to be an earthquake in Texas.

OMG I just changed the DMTL pump a week ago. Super easy fix; I removed the carbon canister just like you did to get the T20 screws off, too. And I bought four new jack pads this week because I lost one to a speed bump. Great video.
I replaced the jack pads of my 325i , then I took it to a repair shop after 2 weeks, and the following day I found out the pads were missing , the repair shop stole it, they pry it out. I’m telling you , these mechs are slick.

This is video is mainly for prelci e90 n54 335i BMWs and 5 and X series that share that same engine. The 2005 to 2009 335i in this video is the probably the most unreliable BMW and engine combo you could possibly buy at any used car dealership. The n54 is a sweet and tune friendly engine though but not worth it for a daily driver, a main car, or if you only have one car. This video is probably relevant for owners after the dealing with the 335i n54 oil leakage, waterpump and fuel pump issues

The leak detection pump pretty much works to find leaks in a vehicle's fuel lines, focusing on the evaporative control system (EVAP). The government requires these types of systems to minimize the amount of harmful vapor leaks that goes into the environment. Also can can cause your car to not run as optimal as it should.
Will the leak detection pump cause an issue with filling the tank? Currently, I am only able to fill my tank halfway. It runs out of gas about half of a tank so I have to be careful. Is that a symptom of this pump?
Hi! Could you please help me? I replaced all 5 light bulbs on rear right tailights and now they dont light up at all. I checked the wiring and one of the wires seems to have corrosion. Im trying to pull out to rewire but it seems its soldered on the other end. Do you have any idea or advice on how to fix it. I also replaced fuses if that helps

Cleaned it all up, bought an OBD2 reader, no codes, no more light. Bizarre, although I do suspect it will be back at some point!
I have a 2012 BMW Convertible 328i and one of the front headrest is up and i cant figure how to adjust them. They dont have the round posts but a square post and looks to be electric. And info how to move them up and down. Again it don't have the chrome 2 round posts. Any info would help ...Thanks.
Most new BMW do not come with a spare tire or jack. My question is specific to the jack itself. Can you use any standard scissor jack type of jack? Or must you have a special one from BMW? Asking because your jack seems to fit neatly in the plastic rubber spot under the car. It would be a pain if that means you need to use only a BMW jack.

Not sure about the 1979 BMW since regulations weren't as strict, but I can assure you your 7 series has one. You'll have to look for the pump that fits it.

Just bought 2 jack pad adapters 4 days ago lol. I was struggling working out where the jacking point was so I Googled it. They were £11.99 each in the UK. I even forgot to take the adapter out and drove 6 miles. Couldn't believe it stay in when I got back to take my wheel off again to paint my break calipers.
The fault code you are referring to should be properly diagnosed by preforming a smoke test with a smoke machine yes the leak detection pump is a common failure but I have seen where the vent solenoid has failed or the pcm which controls the ventilation of the gas tank has failed
PSA: 1. Harbor Freight has a jack stand recall; 2. Don't get under a vehicle with a jack alone, especially when the adapter can slide around on the jack.
PSA anytime you get under a car, there should be Jackstands under the car. A car falling on top of when you follow all safety steps, means you f****d up.

That MHD scanner work well for all around problem codes and making changes such as in a i3 bmw tuning? I have a 2008 335i and it’s been very good, meaning problem free, I did get a lack of top end power recently, then the next time out a engine light, mechanic says I got a misfired #5 cilinder, I am thinking maybe a coil is getting bad? The car has less then 50k miles, I have to get a good scanner to give me better information. Would you recommend that MHD scanner, and another? Mine is the E90. That veinous video looked like maybe the think I should look at, but did it come up on a scan for trouble before you removed and cleaned it? Thanks a lot in advance for responding. The jack pad I have is exact same size & shape, but made of hard rubber, so has some flex in it. I think it works well.

You can make jack pad adapters out of hockey pucks for about $1 each. Being rubber, they also provide some cushioning.
I’m on my 3rd BMW over 20 years. Never had an issue with leak detectors.
The plastic water pumps however...EVERY SINGLE CAR around 100K miles.

Had the evap pump fail on my Mini too. Same issue. Wasn’t hard or expensive to fix once I had the codes.

I unscrew the circle jack plate and put a cloth on it. Works like a charm for mine.

Those Jack points are like 10 bucks on eBay for all four. Those things get damaged and lost regularly I would spend more than that on those

Asking because your jack seems to fit neatly in the plastic rubber spot under the car. It would be a pain if that means you need to use only a BMW jack.
Do all bmw’s have this leak detection pump? I have a 2001 740il and so fas so good but no codes so far. I also have a 1979 320i not sure if that one has a LDP. Thanks for the great informative videos!
Not sure about the 1979 BMW since regulations weren't as strict, but I can assure you your 7 series has one. You'll have to look for the pump that fits it.

Hey you finally got jack pads and a puck! I use 4 pucks with my ESCO jack stands.. you can get the pads and pucks alot cheaper off Amazon.
Dude do I actually have to replace those jack pad adapter things? Cuz I jacked up my bmw by the frame because well that's how you're supposed to jack up a car but should I keep jacking it up that way or what?

Just bought 2 jack pad adapters 4 days ago lol. I was struggling working out where the jacking point was so I Googled it. They were £11.99 each in the UK. I even forgot to take the adapter out and drove 6 miles. Couldn't believe it stay in when I got back to take my wheel off again to paint my break calipers.

I think some Manuals say you can jack the car from the rear pumpkin. Be very careful to place the Jack fully under the pumpkin.
The fault code you are referring to should be properly diagnosed by preforming a smoke test with a smoke machine yes the leak detection pump is a common failure but I have seen where the vent solenoid has failed or the pcm which controls the ventilation of the gas tank has failed

For an e60. The pump is located under the passenger rear wheel well.
PSA:
1. Harbor Freight has a jack stand recall;
2. Don't get under a vehicle with a jack alone, especially when the adapter can slide around on the jack.
PSA anytime you get under a car, there should be Jackstands under the car.
A car falling on top of when you follow all safety steps, means you f****d up.

Use a hockey puck when jacking up bmws. Especially if the Jack pad is broken or missing

Under jack pads there is solid metal and you can just jack it without any jack adapter I think

Were those your codes? Im having a “dme mixture” code and not sure what it is, done research and there is a wide variety of remedies. Completely stock n54. Just replaced bank 1 o2 sensor but didnt bother to replace other one. Thanks
pretty sure any shop - evn bmw - don’t use 4x jack adapters when lifting a car so, the result is to crush the jack pad.

I wouldn't use the flat jack stands with those adapters as they wouldn't have any grip to hold the car from sliding off the stands.
That MHD scanner work well for all around problem codes and making changes such as in a i3 bmw tuning? I have a 2008 335i and it’s been very good, meaning problem free, I did get a lack of top end power recently, then the next time out a engine light, mechanic says I got a misfired #5 cilinder, I am thinking maybe a coil is getting bad? The car has less then 50k miles, I have to get a good scanner to give me better information. Would you recommend that MHD scanner, and another? Mine is the E90. That veinous video looked like maybe the think I should look at, but did it come up on a scan for trouble before you removed and cleaned it? Thanks a lot in advance for responding.
