I need to gush a bit more:
The high points of acting in this film are just utterly magical. I'm nearly getting tears of joy right now just thinking about one of the final bits of dialogue between Lizzy (Knightley) and his father (Donald Sutherland).
      The cinematography is beautiful throughout.
So is the music, which is quite masterfully chosen and deployed. Goodness.

Weighing in (very) late, but have you seen the BBC miniseries from 1995? I love the Knightly version, too, but the miniseries has way more time to stay true to the book and the progress of the relationship.

I have to disagree. I didn't enjoy Deborah Moggach's screenplay at all. Not only did she make a choice not to retain a lot of Austen's original dialogue, but she gives characters lines that other characters said in the original text (for example, Mary saying "What are men to rocks and mountains?", which Elizabeth says in the book)- there's a reason Austen had particular characters saying things and not others.
I also wasn't that keen on the look or the feel of the film - it all looks quite cold and damp (I also very much doubt the Bennets, or any middle class late Georgian family for that matter, would allow a pig to wander into their house). While I appreciate the idea of making the world of the Bennets feel more lived-in and 'real' it lacks a lot of the lightness and brightness of the novel.

The best Pride and Prejudice is still the miniseries with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. It's just so perfectly cast, and the costumes and sets are spot on. I guess you just need to make a six hour movie if you want to make things perfect.

It has a bad reputation, but it's very misunderstood. In my opinion, it's Lynch's best straight horror film, but it's not the TV show. Lynch makes that clear in the opening credits with the television literally exploding, but it was misunderstood at the time.

My Oscar peeve is when they give makeup Oscars to people who should have gotten them years ago. Scorsese did not earn Best Director for The Departed; he earned it for Goodfellas and was given it for The Departed. Same with Leo: his performance in Revenant was not Oscar-worthy, but he was owed one.

It bothers me that you think "Another Day of Sun" is as shallow as you say it is. Study the lyrics. It's essentially a lyrical overture to the film. It sets the tone of hopeful dreams that will most likely not come true in the so-called city of dreams. The mix of optimistic and bittersweet musical composition seals it for me.

La La Land is the classic example of overhype and over praise. I liked the film nonetheless, but I totally understand why Matt and Craig weren't crazy about it. And while I'm on that note, I think there's a new way to draw an oscar: make a movie that is some kind of throwback to old hollywood and your movie will likely get nominated if the critics like it

I thoroughly enjoyed La La Land, and was thinking for a long time after what it was exactly I liked about it. The conclusion I came to was that it really reminded me of relationships I have had, the feeling of falling in love and out of love, the feeling of looking back on a past relationship where you know it was right to end it - but the memories still warm your soul.
On an unrelated note (and I might have left this comment before), have you seen the Ipcress File, a spy thriller where Michael Caine plays a sort of anti-James Bond?

I saw La La Land differently. The cheery musical numbers are usually about the fakeness of LA, and not actually about passion. Like how in the first number everyone's singing about how wonderful the LA sunshine is, while stuck in gridlock traffic; it's delusion and hollow bragging. The style of shooting also adds to that. There are a lot of long panning shots. The lighting is often not great. It could just be meant to remind people of musicals on stage, but I thought they were trying to represent a more real look at Hollywood, symbolically unedited. When they're singing/playing music and it's real passion that's when the background disappears, and it takes a while for them to get to that kind of passion.
It's a different kind of chemistry that starts their relationship. Recall she was brushing off other attractive guys at the start, and it really was his piano playing that made him attractive to her. And it was more her pestering that put her on his radar. When they're taking the walk to their cars that first night, they're still not feeling passion. It's more of a playfulness exchange for dominance at that time. Then after that their similar goals, experiences, and love of art slowly bond them.
Another aspect that felt very LA to me, was how the main characters have their grandiose goals, but there are little glimpses that they aren't great people. They're both annoying drivers. They're both very judgy of other people. They have no real friends. She ditches her friends from the beginning of the movie. His friends only like him for his talent. Emma's character was going to stand up Ryan's character for the movie date without calling him. Then she abandon's her prior engagement without any explanation. They break into the Griffith Observatory. They vandalize the tapas samba place.
The lack of musicals in the middle is because it's an in between state. They're not being fake, but it's still not really true romantic passion either. The fight is more about fear and expectations, and it's not the kind of passion that the movie chose to put into song.
So this was a very meta movie for me. It was going for something unique that may or may not have worked.

you guys were a little too harsh on La La Land. the whole thing is Rock Of Ages except with Jazz instead of hair/glam rock. forget the plot, and yeah it did suffer from forgetting to be a musical, BUT the amazing part is the subtle lesson it gives throughout the film of why someone should care about jazz in the first place....and it sold the concept of early jazz to 20somethings bouncing between nothing but nostalgia for the 90's MTV pop generation, and the modern EDM scene.
i def like it, and i knew it was Oscar bate, and it was a perfect date night movie....but as someone whom frequents Wally's (one of America's oldest jazz clubs) it does a damn fine job with the non musical-esque genre music.

I thought La La Land was fantastic, and the best movie I saw in theaters that was released in 2016. To be fair I have not seen Moonlight, but La La Land was totally engaging to me, and it wasn't a bland Hollywood wank like it could have been. It's a movie about hopes and dreams in Hollywood, but there's a lot of suffering to get where the main characters get and the ending is very bittersweet and much more realistic than what you see in most musicals. I also loved the majority of the music.

Well now the ripping of La La Land was a bit excessive.
I do agree that the middle could've used a song or two.
It's all about that they dared to make a movie like they used to, and what it says for the future of mainstream movies and what the next generation of directors will get away with. This was a box office success, and big studios will probably chase this yarn ball by funding more traditional movies. Radicalism through traditionalism just as Gosling's character does.

One of the things that got to me about Hidden Figures was how they glossed over Janelle Monae. Her character's story was treated as the least important by a wide margin, and so we only got to see bits and pieces of what kind of an actress she could be. I found that so disappointing because she is such a remarkable performer that the idea of seeing her attempt acting in a serious capacity was a draw for me.

Good episode. LaLaLand was okay, not the worst or the best thing ever...but yeah, zero chemistry, and I can recall more songs from Grease 2 than LLL.
It was like a 50% movie. It was 50% of this idea/tone or 50% of that idea/tone but never stuck with either, which summed up to - just okay.
My fave "letters to h-wood" movies from 2016 were Shane Blacks "The Nice Guys" and LLLands darker hollywood fairy tale cousin "The Neon Demon" from Winding-Refn.

To me the ending was completely illegitimate as well. The way they set up that final climactic musical number didn't resonate with me at all. I didn't get an emotional connection with it because the explanation the movie gave me rang completely false. Yes it's been a long time so anything could've happened during that time period. However I think that's something that should've been mentioned in the script in this case. I think the sequence still holds weight in that it capsulated the entire genre of movies and gave it sort of a twist. But the human part to it got lost completely because I didn't believe what I saw literally.
If the number took place at any other place in the film I wouldn't really bother, but since they set it up as an extremely emotional climax I gotta call the movie out on it.

The web series adaptation of P&P is incredible (The Lizzie Bennet Diaries)--as someone who really could not get into Austen, I completely got the jist of the plot, and the modern changes they made (according to my mother, who's actually read the book) worked very well within the scope of the story--they actually explore the women instead of it just being this "happily ever after" ending. Lots of internet cult-series stars, and a few of the actresses went on to do television.

Though I love most of the cast, I don't care for this version. There are a LOT of changes from the book, and all for the worse. Whoever rewrote the dialogue was no Austen. There was not clunky "pride" and "prejudice" title call out, for example.

I think the best love letter to Hollywood is Scorsese's Hugo. I hope Moonlight wins. Haven't even seen it yet, but I don't want La La Land to win.

Wrong. The best movie of the year was Shin Godzilla and/or Rogue One.

This adaptation annoys me no end. If you don't want to stay true to the basic plot and setting, do a "based on" movie instead. It worked for Clueless, Bridget Jones Diary, West Side Story, etc (sorry, jumped from Austen to Shakespeare there at the end, but I think the point stands).

"Zombies are in town." Craig should write a screenplay about that.

I was actually really disappointed by The Arrival. I thought the dialogue was a little over the top and some of it not even believable. (The military wouldn't brief them on the aliens before they put them in the spaceship? Really?) I feel like any actor could have played Forrest Whittaker's part which probably means they only wanted to attach another big name to the movie. I get it but it's pretentious and that irritates me.

Love you guys. Very rarely disagree. I believe you are wrong about La La Land. Sooooo much better than the forgettable gimmicks or The Artists. LLL has so much chemistry because it isn't a musical, it is a realistic romance, that has some musical numbers. both characters are complex and have multiple dimensions. It is highly relatable and does not romanticize Hollywood. again, love ya guys, but think you're wrong.

jwfyler agreed mostly, I was not expecting LaLa Land to be as good as it was (not sure why after Whiplash), but I think The Artist was really good as well. like Craig once said of A Beautiful Mind, I think it was hurt by the best picture win
