    The note on the dead sailor states: "Because of one spoon of borscht."

    8:36. Note Says "Из-за ложки Борща" translated as "Because of the spoon of Borscht" meaning they killed the man over such trivial thing as dinner. Or at least i think it is. I'm no movie analyzer or anything, my English is kinda shaky also.

    "Is this your card?" is one of the funniest non-sequiturs in the history of this show's intro.

    I watched Potemkin in art history class a few months ago. Great film. It's very interesting how a film from so far back, where its actors don't even speak can create such an emotional turmoil within you.

    Wizards! Craig! Wizards! Ralph Bakshi and the best midnight movie ever!

    • @SleepFan771
      @SleepFan771 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Beat it, sorcerer! Man, Wizards is fucking nuts. The strangest animation and story ever. Bakshi truly consumed ALL the acid for that one. I recall the soundtrack being amazing prog rock stuff. Near the beginning, when one of the robot assassin guys was walking around with that Pink Floyd-esque music was such a cool sequence.

    I think you're wrong about seeing 1941 on September 31, 2006 unless the real reason you remember that so well is because it's the first time in history September had 31 days.

    Have you ever seen the 1975 Russian historical drama, "The Captivating Star of Happiness?" Released during the international women's year and dedicated to the women of Russia, the film follows the main players of the Decemberist revolt and their wives. Personally the film was challenging to follow as an American who is unfamiliar with various early 19th century Russian nobles, but the cinematography and Soviet perception of the period was something truly novel and fun to discuss in our movie history course in college.

      I'm not sure if I watched the wrong Ghost in the Shell movie. But what I watched made no sense to me. The lady I was led to believe is the main character of Ghost in the Shell was in the movie for all of 5 minutes before she goes off, only to reappear at the end and do... something. I might have had a hard time following the plot of the movie, seeing as how half of it is delivered in the form of very obscure poems that forced me to open google mid movie several times, until I just gave up, because it wasn't helping. Please tell me this is not the masterpiece I've heard about.

    • @mattbrady2011
      @mattbrady2011 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Oom Reni No thats it. XD Its honestly a pretty big philosophy movie. And if you're not into stupidly high concepts delivered through vague ways its hard to really "get" Ghost in the Shell. Honestly i recommend the series more than the movie. As they go through a much softer telling of the same concepts with WAY more time dedicated to them.Though the movie is B E A U tifully animated and one hell of a mind trip.

    • @Future_Pheonix
      @Future_Pheonix 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oom Reni I'm just wondering which one you watched.. did it have old-school 2D animation, or did it look newer? but yeah, GITS is not easy for everyone to digest..

    I was watching this episode with my sister, and once we got to Seen It! and your review of The Assassin she suggested that you guys watch Herz aus Glas, a 1976 Herzog film. Apparently it's also pretty slow-paced, but worth the watch ("because it's crazy"). I haven't seen it either, so apparently I need to get on that as well!

    • @TAEpley
      @TAEpley 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Heart of Glass" is crazy weird and good. Watch it first, then listen to the commentary or go to the wikipedia page, you'll be amazed to learn how Werner Herzog directed his cast... seriously.

    ok maybe i can expand on why GHOST IN THE SHELL is a must watch animation movie. Released in 1996 is a feat of technical and artistic vision, based loosely on the manga of the same name it redefines the cyberpunk genre in the 90`s not only in visuals but also in the intricate story that tells. A hunting story with philosophical questions about the self and the conscious mind, is a movie that doesn't fall for the typical anime troupes and is soundtrack is INCREDIBLE!!! I really hope that both can consider this movie for Welcome To The Basement. (sorry for mi English)

    I'm excited to see more animated movies in June! I see others have left some suggestions, so I thought I'd leave a few of mine. Not all of these are 'good', but each one has something interesting/unique about it that would give you guys something to talk about:
    The Triplets of Belleville (2003)
    A Cat In Paris (2010)
    Nocturna (2007)
    Song of the Sea (2014)
    Gulliver's Travels (1939)

    Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989)

    The Untouchables stole their baby carriage scene from this. ....maybe? Probably not. Sean Connery... Russian Commander... Untouchables... Kevin Bacon! ...I think I'm having a stroke.

    • @craigjohnson6423
      @craigjohnson6423 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Oh, they stole it all right. Brian de Palma does not deny it. If you're going to steal, steal big.

    • @UnseenGlasses
      @UnseenGlasses 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Brian De Palma is all about reworking elements from other films. For example Phantom of the Paradise (previously featured on Welcome to The Basement) has moments referencing The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Psycho, Touch of Evil, and more. His film Blow Out is basically all a reworking of Blow Up and The Conversation.
      Also The Odessa Steps sequence is one of the most tributed moments in all of film. I know I've seen it used in tons of movies, but the only other one that's coming to mind at the moment is Brazil.

    The minute you said Animation in June, I gasped.
    Craig, some animation choices if I can put in my two cents.
    The Girl Who Leapt Through Time- An anime film about time travel that happens to be a love story.
    Rock N Rule- The animation is great the songs are outstanding, the story is...well, they have one.
    Rescuers Down Under- Underrated Disney Animated sequel that is way more fun than its predecessor with brilliant animation defined by the CAPS animation process. Also bombed at the box office.
    Perfect Blue- Satoshi Kon's masterpiece of paranoia, thrills and mystery.
    A Goofy Movie- Why not another underrated Disney gem that follows Goofy and his son Max on a road trip that is surpringsly fun, abliet clichéd at times.
    The Prince of Eygpt- Stellar music, stellar animation, a stellar cast and...well, stellar in every way.

Matt and Craig I'm assuming you've both seen the all time classic that is 'TAXI DRIVER' with Robert De Niro. My favorite film of all tim. I'm sure Craig will get deluged with requests for Japanese animated films... and I intend to pile on.
    I'd love to see the pair watch a Satoshi Kon film, such as "Perfect Blue" or "Paprika." It could lead into the influences those films have had on Darren Aronofsky and Christopher Nolan respectively. Or perhaps Katsuhiro Otomo's anthology film "Memories," which Kon wrote part of.
    As for more Western fair, how about "Mr. Bug Goes to Town," one of only two features made Fleischer Studios (fully and freely available on TH-cam)
    Or maybe something like "Sita Sings the Blues," an animated film ostensibly made by one person. (also free and clear on TH-cam)

    It's timely because Jack Lemon is known in animation circles for being a great reference for pose-to-pose animation and the Odd Couple is a favorite of James Baxter who is a legendary animator who worked on basically every Disney movie in the 90's.

Jude Law's performance was fantastic and he was easily my favorite character as Eugene(though his character's actual name is Jerome). It also had a really cool and unique premise. Matt & Craig, have you guys seen Pedro Almodovar's "Volver"? I just saw it recently and thought Penélope Cruz was great!
    Oh man, I am having flashbacks to a Russian Avant Garde class I took back in college, the professor made such a big deal about this film and the invention of the montage as well as the heavy symbolism with every zoom in. Good movie, but I feel like Eisenstein Alexander Nevsky was better and the 2 Ivan the Terrible movies are his masterpieces. I did enjoy the second more though as Ivan's madness is fascinating.

    Suggestion for Animated Films Month: Fantastic Planet, a 1970s French/Czechoslovakian sci-fi animated film. Lots of weird, trippy visuals of the alien planet, where giant blue humanoids keep humans as pets until the humans (known as Oms, a pun on "homme/man") stage a rebellion. Hard to describe adequately, even harder to forget once you've seen it.

    Heavy Metal would be a fantastic animated movie for Welcome to the Basement. It's such a mess. Seen it?

    Oh man, I really _really_ hope Craig picks Fantastic Planet. It's easily one of the best animated films I've ever seen.

    Speaking of Russian movies, have you guys seen Night Watch? It had an international release I think. Not a faithful book-adaptation but a decent movie.
