Kinda bummed out that they look so similar to each other. But this just means that the Criterion release is just that damn good. My 4k player does upscaling so I’ll just hang onto my bluray. Thanks Jeff 🙏🏼
The biggest problems with this release are that the first 20 minutes are in the incorrect color space, making the image green and undersaturated. The 2.0 track is also just a 5.1 downmix. It's not a true stereo mix like is on the Criterion.
I mentioned the same thing in an earlier comment, but it may have been deleted because it mentioned a forum that often criticizes Jeff's reviews (though I'm not as critical myself). Jeff, can you take another look at the first 20 minutes or so?

The commentary on the Criterion Blu is from 1994, originally produced for their laserdisc release of the film. That commentary is outstanding, one of the best I've heard. Kino's 4K disc has incorrect color space for the first 20 minutes. The included Blu-ray from Kino does not have this issue. The audio mixes are not identical between the two releases. Criterion has the correct original 2.0 mix. Kino's is a fold down of the 5.1 mix to 2.0, which is inferior to the 2.0 mix that Criterion offers. Because Kino's 4K disc has color issues for the first 20 minutes, one must compare Kino's Blu-ray with Criterion's Blu-ray. Criterion's Blu-ray has slightly more detail and the correct 2.0 mix. The clear winner, in regards to picture and audio, is the Criterion Collection Blu-ray of Silence of The Lambs.
Also, Kino is stubbornly not acknowledging the problems with this release and is highly unlikely to correct the transfer and audio and issue a replacement program.

Since most of the 4K HDR Blu Ray release seem to have Dolby Vision, am I missing a lot on the picture quality when I watch discs that have Dolby Vision instead of HDR10+?
Surprised not to hear anything about the color space issue in the first 20 minutes a few people are upset about in bluray forums. I don't own this disc at all, might pick up the disc on sale. Also it makes sense these two look similar, not many blurays get a 4k master and then down sampled to 1080, those actual upgrades tend to be more obvious.

I think the question should always be "why not the 4K?" if one is available and the price is acceptable. The digital intermediate is in 4K and it looks great.
I couldn't find anything about Bong Joon Ho’s supervision on the criterion release. If packaging and special features are the deciding factor for you then criterion might be your choice always. If picture quality is the deciding factor then the question is: "why not 4K?" (I'm aware that I moved the goalpost here. ;) If there is a digital intermediate in 4K the only thing that could have gone wrong in the 4K release is the HDR or the encoding. I doubt that Bong Joon Ho saw the 4K Blu Ray and thought: "That looks nothing like I imagened it!"

Receive Silence of lamb of criterion upon your recommendation .
Great video as always! I’ve got the Criterion and am very happy with it. I’m on the fence about whether to get the 4K or the Criterion of Parasite though, think you could compare those?
I think the question should always be "why not the 4K?" if one is available and the price is acceptable. The digital intermediate is in 4K and it looks great.
@@bened22 the packaging, special features, and Bong Joon Ho's supervision make the Criterion version the definitive release.
@@bened22 he approved the special features and supervised the 4K transfer. Also the special features on Criterion, including the black and white version arent on the 4K blu ray. Parasite on Criterion is the definitive release
@@bened22 the 4K disc is only slightly better than the blu ray as far as image quality.
Thank you for this was holding off on watching it due to this release, but I’ll stick with my criterion
Can you review Rosemary’s Baby on Criterion?
I’m happy with the 4K release as it’s my favourite movie of all time and as I’m in the the UK I’d need an region free blu ray player to play the criterion version. The 4K was £26 imported from the states so cheaper then the criterion version and no need to buy a new blu ray player to play it.
It was $20 at Best Buy and I had to grab it despite having the Criterion edition.
Thanks for this comparison. I imported the Criterion release upon its release so I was concerned about importing Silence Of The Lambs again. Thankfully I don’t have to now. Thanks again for this review. Hope you do a comparison review of Mulholland Drive when Criterion ans Studiocanal release their 4K editions.
Sweet Sweetback. Criterion vs. Vinegar Syndrome.
I had the Criterion sealed - tossed on ebay then picked up Silence 4k at BB for $20 so felt like an even swap.
😒😒😒
Glad I didn't preorder Kino's release, I was waiting for your review & now I'll just hang on to my Criterion blu-ray instead of double-dipping!
shame the 4k isn't the leap from Blu-Ray, I currently do not own this on Blu-Ray but I will do now as both my TV and Player upscales. Cheers
