I have bought Silence of the Lambs on VHS, twice on DVD, twice on Blu-ray, and soon twice in 4K. That Arrow packaging is just too good and it's just one of those movies I will buy every time it is re-released As always, great video, great review. Love all your stuff.
Thanks so much for the compliment! It’s really appreciated! I’ll always buy this when ever a new release comes out. It’s so rewatchable. I’ve watched this movie 3 times this year and am never bored. Just glued to the screen.
Both releases are gorgeous & original however I preferred the white box match the vhs release the way that I remembered it as a kid. I’m in western 🇨🇦 ordered my from eBay $56 cad not bad for an arrow release with all the bells & whistles ! Of course I’m still waiting for it to arrive lol. I also have the previous 4k release they’ll look good together 👌
This is one of the few movies that are even better than the book. While reading the book, I remember thinking that Jodie foster should play c starling. Only time that's ever happened and turned out to be the case.
Thanks for your confirmation that Arrow fixed the visuals. I bought myself a copy because of your review. Next dilemma, IBF Seven Samurai or Criterion. Oh, the damn difficulties of life! 😁
I'm wondering just how dynamic the source material they were able to get their hands on actually is. If the film prints don't have but so much dynamic range to begin with then BFI's use of Dolby Vision HDR isn't going to do but so much for it without tinkering with the look of it.
@chrisjfox8715 That’s why i’m curious about how they were able to make this look as good as they did. It does look like they took the previous scan and just adjusted the image from there. It’s more like detail work then changing the image to much. How they did that? I’m not entirely sure. Maybe Kino just messed up with what they had and Arrow just corrected that.
It does change the look of the colors. They just stand out more. They didn’t sacrifice the flat color pallet. And it still feels natural. Your eye will just get drawn to the more colorful aspects of the film now. It’s just one where it completely changes how you remember the movie thankfully .
@Mr.Goodkat Ywah exactly i’m sorry. It’s not a color timing change or anything like that. It actually fixed those issues whole making colors more bold and noticeable instead of appearing flat but not overwhelming where you’ll get taken out of the movie.
Someone else said that too. Maybe it’s the area you live in? Every time i’ve tried to check out I get a notification that says it can’t ship to that address.
Make sure you are on the Arrow website and not zavvi as I know zavvi won’t ship to the USA but arrow does it’s worked for me for the Lambs, Warriors exclusive , and Heathers and Basket Case arrow store exclusives no issues so far.
@brentmadison4477 That’s so strange. I’ll try it again, It would always say unable to ship to that location. Make sure your on the correct site. So i’m always going on Atomic or Diabolik and importing them. But then I don’t get the Exclusive packaging if I want it
Yeah this movie we’ve been very lucky with physical releases but you always think that’s going to be the last one then two years later another one comes out lol. I think this will be the last for a while though.
I totally get that! ai probably would of waited too but ai wanted to review it and see if it was an upgrade over the previous releases. My curiously got the better of me lol.
We can agree to disagree on the audio front. I always found the 5.1 to be pretty anemic. MGM is not know for technical excellence on remixes. 5.1 is considered a "superior" format because its more modern but format and audio quality are two different things. There are distinct queues missing, or at least hardly audible, in the 5.1. The 5.1 track was created by nameless individuals while the 2.0 track was developed by the original filmakers, who won an Oscar for their efforts. The detail in the stereo has always been superior. I think most people are using sound bar set ups because of cost, but if you have a decent system with proper surrounds its hard to deny the stereo. Hell, just listen to it with a decent set of headphones and it will put the 5.1 to shame. The Criterion audio is very agressive and what I have grown accustomed to, so when i watched the new Arrow version, I thought the track was a little lacking at first. But honestly as the film continued it began to grow on me a lot. Its interesting. Both the Arrow and Criterion stereo are from original source tracks but are EQd quite differently. I think I will be watching the Arrow going forward but keeping the Criterion for the extras. By the way, i think theres nothing on the Kino that is exclusive. Arrow has the Tim Lucas commentary and all the archivals. The Kino is basically worthless now.
I agree that Kino 4K is completely useless. I gave mine away after I decided on the Kino. I agree with you about the 5.1 it definitely is weaker at points and did lack much punch compared to the two 2.0 tracks. It really is just personal preference because I know most people from what I can tell prefer one of the two 2.0 tracks but couldn’t agree which is better loll. I thought the Arrow had a little too much base and the dialogue was a little low so I had to adjust that. But some people were saying the Criterion one had no bass and was mixed bad but I thought it was fine. But you’re right everyone is coming at it from different sound set ups.Thank you so much for this comment I really appreciate it.
Yeah I agree. I am totally blind I have no eyesight and of course the audio is really important to me. I have a really capable 5.1.4 set up here and honestly I've always found the 5.1 really thin and flat. Bass was really lacking and honestly never saw the point of having the rear channels if nothing was going to be put there. Most of the action is in the centre channel in that mix. Very disappointed in the KL 4k. They could do such an amazing job building an enclosed space with good Atmos but of course I guess there's no money or desire for that. In which case then, I'll get this one and listen to the new 2.0 mix. Generally I like what Arrow does with their sound.
@ednunpourtahmasbi605 You have bad vision like that?! I have really horrible vision myself actually. I’m legally blind so I watch movies really close to the TV because i’m near sited. You’re right about that Kino release. I couldn’t believe how much that one missed the mark. I usually have great experiences with them.
@ednunpourtahmasbi605 Ooooo ok i’m sorry buddy! Then I completely understand why Sound needs to be in the highest quality. My situation is different. I can see but distance is a problem. I have Ocular Albinism.
I have the Criterion release as recommended by you from the comparision. You definitely cant go wrong with either Arrow or Criterion. The packaging is superb and the transfers are always stellar. Kino cheaps out on the packaging. They never give different artwork and always have that bland black, grey and white writing on the discs. Nothing stands out about it. Even Vinegar gives you reversible artwork with the funky 70's porn intro LMFAO.🤣🤣🤣
Lmaoooooo I appreciate Kino for keeping their stuff uniform but no nothing stands out from them. Arrow has my favorite packaging now. The hate case with the poster is all I could Ia so for!
I agree. There are so many movies that haven’t been upgraded to HD and this one has had 2 4Ks and a blu ray with the same scan lol. This should be the final one for a long time.
we all agree Silence of the Lambs is a great film. It has a Criterion and multiple 4K release. Can we please just give this title a rest… there are dozens and dozens of other tiles that need a proper release. 🫤
The bloopers are on the Arrow release as well, I can confirm it.
Thank you so much! I’m going to pin this comment to the top.

Great Review 👍

Thats how I remembered the box art also! I think your going to love it! Im happy to own this one in multiple additions!
@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia yep awesome definitely looking forward to it! Thnx my friend 😉
Nice review John! I agree I prefer the original poster art which is why I picked that edition up also 😃
Thanks buddy!! Great minds think alike!
This is one of the few movies that are even better than the book. While reading the book, I remember thinking that Jodie foster should play c starling. Only time that's ever happened and turned out to be the case.
That’s awesome!! It’s definitely rare where the movie ends up being better the book. The silence of the lambs is one of those cornerstone movies.
Thanks for your confirmation that Arrow fixed the visuals. I bought myself a copy because of your review. Next dilemma, IBF Seven Samurai or Criterion. Oh, the damn difficulties of life! 😁
Thanks so much. I hope you enjoy it. I think i’m going Criterion for Seven Samurai actually even though I have their previous blu ray lol

One of my favourite movies got the other version by criterion in 4K but might get the arrow version soon different from the kino lorber version
The Criterion version is great but Visually the Arrow version is the best! Which is great after that Kino Version.
Should the colours really pop out though? is that the way it was originally intended to look? HDR worries me sometimes.

Arrow UK does actually ship to the USA, I’ve ordered with them many times.
Someone else said that too. Maybe it’s the area you live in? Every time i’ve tried to check out I get a notification that says it can’t ship to that address.
I triple-dipped for this bad boy.
I had to do the same thing lol. But got rid of the Kino lol
I got that site exclusive from arrow UK yesterday and I am in the USA you can get it you just have to switch the site to Great Britain
And that works? When ever I do that and plug in my address It goes to the next screen and it says that they won’t ship to that address.
Make sure you are on the Arrow website and not zavvi as I know zavvi won’t ship to the USA but arrow does it’s worked for me for the Lambs, Warriors exclusive , and Heathers and Basket Case arrow store exclusives no issues so far.

I love Manhunter
It’s so good! One day it will get a 4K!
had the Criterion sold it for the Kino now i’ll be selling the Kino for the Arrow version - so much double and triple dipping!
Yeah this movie we’ve been very lucky with physical releases but you always think that’s going to be the last one then two years later another one comes out lol. I think this will be the last for a while though.
Own it, top tier release in every way
Arrow rarely disappoints!
Hey John I really like Silence...but I also enjoy red dragon and to a certain extent Hannibal!!!! What's your opinion on these other 2????
I like them but don’t love them. I’ll watch them but I love Silence of the lambs and Manhunter more personally.
I still need to watch this. When this came out at the theaters, my mom said it was a scary movie lol.
Did you see The Terminator is up for preorder?
I did!!! I’m excited we can pre order it. I’m not in love with the steel book but it’s still good. I’m curious to see what the slip cover looks like
@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia I'm curious too. Maybe it will have the original poster art. I think I'll get the steelbook and slipcover for this one lol
I already pre ordered the steelbook from groove so maybe i’ll do the same and get both. It’s the Terminatir lol.
I'm still to watch my 4 k Blu-ray, I did go cinema today see alien Romulus
@stuartgeorge2324 Did you?! What did you think of it?
Signs and sixth sense both coming to 4k!
I can’t wait! October 22nd is going to be a good day. Were also gettin Ghost that day.
Nice video. But I've seen this film a 1000 times so will give I a miss for now.
I totally get that! ai probably would of waited too but ai wanted to review it and see if it was an upgrade over the previous releases. My curiously got the better of me lol.

I find it very scary
I wish I did. I mean the subject is horrifying.
Put the fuckin lotion in the basket 😆
lmaoooooooooo I say it in that voice every time.
There have been way too many Blu-ray releases of this movie, and I hope this Arrow release will be the last.

I don’t disagree. Theres plenty of great movies that still haven’t come to 4K. We’ve been very fortunate with The silence of the lambs.
