We need to get back to this method. We have a 4 year-old Mini Schnauzer with poor recall AND a bit of resource guarding! So, guess what he does? Runs off with a squeeky ball, (usually someone else's!) and plays silly beggars staying just out of our reach! 😏
Hi, love the video. I have a 1,5 year old lab and she’s naughty. Her recall is bad and I think it’s because we gave her too much freedom as a puppy. She got a bit too confident and isn’t focused on us. Would you recommend perfecting her heel and lead work before we take her to a long line or is this something I should be doing at the same time? Would love to hear some advice. Thanks!
Hi, thank you for your message. Common issue is if we give young dogs too much freedom, they create their own adventure and expect freedom. Get your dog to heel on the short lead and do this as a daily exercise. At the same time, clip the long lead to your slip lead and occasionally drop the lead, but your dog will still feel the weight of the long lead. Find an area free from distractions if possible and practice. Also, turn quickly when walking him to heel and clap your hands. You need to create a game with your dog that makes him focus on you. Hope that helps a bit. Keep pushing forward, and if any stage stops working, go back to when it was for a bit longer.
We have trained cockerpoos and they can make lovely gundogs with the right training. Use a long lead and get the recall in off scent. Create a game and make yourself more interesting.
Your videos are such a pleasure to watch we would watch them even if we didn’t have a Springer. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. It is appreciated.
I’ve been to Carl twice with my GSP one 2 one what a difference he made to my general basic training, this guy is magic, thankyou Carl 👍
Yes great video thank you very much.
