Wow, your uploads are priceless. Packed full of great tips and education to support us training our canine companions. This video however, you knocked the ball out of the park. Thank you.
Lovely pup. That wee dudes tail hardly stopped wagging all the time you were holding him up off the ground. What a star. What a happy, well balanced and rounded pup. Tebay Services in Westmorland must be the best laid out and thought through services ever. Half way between my adopted home in West Sussex and my son's place in the Angus Glens. Perfect!
Such a great overview. Our golden retriever boy is approaching 11 weeks and so far we've been bombarded by all the various YT channels that promote exactly as you mentioned: treat driven training, putting more pressure on the dog than required for the age. We've resisted all the tricks but have been training sit and stay, and thresholds. Building engagement by running away is superb advice - so far we've built that up with treats (kibble etc), paid on eye contact. When we get outside however, the garden is just too much of a distraction unless we get very high value treats out) eating grass and anything he can get in his mouth. Our 120m2 garden isn't quite like your setup but we do have the space. We've been using a lead/collar to walk him to it down the side of the house (he walks those 20seconds well, but will absolutely pull if he wants to get into some moss that's fallen off the roof, or to drive into the hedge.. we can carry him from the back door down the patio steps to the lawn however. I'm going to try to build up the engagement by running away and bouncing around as you suggest. Question: he just LOVES the hedge and that's going to be our biggest adversary on maintaining attention. Likewise the hedge gives him all his chewing distractions. What do you recommend to stop or lessen this distraction? What do you recommend if he just plainly ignores you because he's found a hedge to chew? Is it worth adding a temporary fence around the law so he can't get to the hedge? Thanks for your advice and videos.
I always think it's important to watch and listen to others even if you do things differently. I do use food for training (among many other things and it's certainly not an over use), which i know you don't. But we also do things so similarly in other aspects, and I bloody love this video. I hope everyone with a puppy sees this, and especially those with gundog breeds in pet homes. Solid advice.
Great video makes me feel better for just letting my boys be puppies when they were little. (Admit to being a bit soft and spoiling them a bit !) They are now 14 months and 8 months old working cockers and they still like playing rough with each other during downtime nothing too aggressive just scrabbling at each other/jumping and rolling about they break it up when told too but it seems to be just part of growing up and they do it less and less now.
I think no a no 2 can certainly be trained too! Obviously it is time of day / habit dependent but my 7 month Golden Retriever Murphy is definitely prompted by the ‘ Go Poo ‘ prompt , and it works almost all the time .
Brought our 8 week old yellow lab home yesterday and this video has come at a brilliant time since we’ve been watching your videos repeatedly over the last week after finding the channel. Thank you! One topic I’d love to hear your thoughts on is nutrition and diet for dogs. What do you feed them?
Am making the mistake of lead training on a 12 week old puppy. After this video i will stop for at least 12 weeks so i can have a bit more fun with her. I only want her to sit wait, return on call lay down and not jump up. I think that will be more than enough until walking on a lead. Thanks ❤
Absolutely I totally agree a baby is a bay let them grow s.owly a d soundly and make it fun and just one thing g I'd add for owners just relax and enjoy every second xxxx
Learned a lot from this video, thank you for the tips. We will be receiving our puppy soon at 8 weeks. I know you said about holding off on using a lead. Would you only introduce a collar when lead training?
With leads, our older dog doesn’t want to be bothered by the puppy so we have been putting a lead on the puppy so we have some control when they are both outside. What would you suggest in this scenario?
Great advice Charlie. At what age would you introduce using a lead with a puppy, and would it be a slip lead? Some say a slip lead can damage a puppy’s trachea if they’re too young.
Very helpful thank you. Question- if the 11 week old puppy doesn’t follow you around and just wants to sniff and run about and doesn’t come to you when you try to get its attention? Maybe make a smaller area if it’s a big garden? Sorry for stupid question.
Interesting video, just a question though; does this advice (not doing anything really with your puppy the first months) difference between breeds? Or would you treat a , let's say, flatcoated retriever the same as a labrador retriever? I ask this because I literally just saw a Flatcoated breeder working on sit/stay at a distance with a 14 week old puppy and I thought that might be a bit early (after seeing your video).
Was advised I need to get my dog out “socialising” now before it’s even had his jabs, even carrying it in a puppy carrier to get used to sounds and cars etc. watching this makes me realise that was a load of rubbish.
Exactly I've just got a 16 week old Springer we are just having fun bonding and engaging with me first..
I couldn’t agree more let youngsters be youngsters. Fun times are good times plenty of time to mould the pup into a trustworthy companion.

Love your advice wish I had found it sooner
I have just brought a lab bitch i pick her up 27th December i cannot wait, thank you for your videos i am learning so much.
I love your approach! It is so true. A puppy is a blank slate. Relax and enjoy the puppy stage, it is too short already.
Great advice, I keep watching, re-watching and re-watching. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
I love how much you love dogs!
The dogs don't need the training its the humans. Great advice and gorgeous pup !!

Thank you again Charlie for the video , Thunder looks a beautiful well breed puppy .
Brilliant.Just got a Labrador puppy at 11 weeks.Very informative 👍
The best advice & direction I've ever seen on early puppy raising and the why's behind the logic....THANK YOU

Love your advice! Thank you. First time dog parent here. My sprocer is going crazy on the gardens.
This video is a huge help. No puppy yet, but it's nice to have your videos to fall back to. Thank you
We have some of you want one !
@@MordorGundogs they're worth the money and the wait. If things turn around financially, I'll take you up on that. You'll love Idaho!
Brilliant advice as always there’s too many people in too big of a hurry 👍
Best puppy video ever!

Great video, so much commen sence suggestion. Keep up the good work, and we may all become better dog owners, but it won't happen overnight. Thank You
Brilliant video, I can relate with my current pups
Thank You!
Only person I’m listening to now. Amazing tips. Just got a WCS 9 weeks old a few days ago. Glad I watched this video
Thank You!
This is amazing advice well done as always!
Thank you so much for this video… super helpful

This is so helpful thanks, great video, lovely dog

Great training lessons.
@@ralphbinsted4997 Thank You!
Thanks for such an informative video! At what age would you recommend introducing the lead?
Hi my working cocker spaniel is 6 months old when I take her on the lead she really pulls do you think she’s to young for a lead thanks.
I very much agree with your too much too soon comment and instead let the pups be pups for a while!
With leads, our older dog doesn’t want to be bothered by the puppy so we have been putting a lead on the puppy so we have some control when they are both outside. What would you suggest in this scenario?
Always thought my little border left mum to young at 8 weeks, he’s 20 months now and still makes sucking noises in his sleep.
Great advice Charlie. At what age would you introduce using a lead with a puppy, and would it be a slip lead? Some say a slip lead can damage a puppy’s trachea if they’re too young.
They can if used incorrectly
4 months or so
great video thank you x what age do you introduce a puppy to other puppies or dogs when they are not living with sisters etc ??
Very helpful thank you. Question- if the 11 week old puppy doesn’t follow you around and just wants to sniff and run about and doesn’t come to you when you try to get its attention? Maybe make a smaller area if it’s a big garden? Sorry for stupid question.
I'd definitely make it a smaller area change your tone get down with the pup and make it zhort and often
So 5-6 months before you even introduce the lead and walks? Won’t it be better to familiarise them with the lead in the garden first?
Brilliant

How old should a puppy be when you start to use a lead?
Hey,I wondered if you have a link for the leads you use please?
@5:24
makes the most sense
No treats needed here then, just pure engagement
I worked with dogs in London and 95% lived in an apartment, there are plenty of ways to make this work.
Did you miss the gundog bit?
I’ve heard puppies should be socialised with other dogs by 16 weeks old. Is this correct?
I would like to know more around this x
@@katiereid5569 research The Dog Listener. Great advice from both these guys.
My mother taught me to wee outside the very same way
How to take a puppy out side without a lead in the city ?
So….are you saying that my puppy is to young to go to the moon 🌙
Here in the US they let puppies go home at 7-8 weeks old. I don’t agree with it. Puppies should at least be 12 weeks old before going home.
Was advised I need to get my dog out “socialising” now before it’s even had his jabs, even carrying it in a puppy carrier to get used to sounds and cars etc. watching this makes me realise that was a load of rubbish.
Every four to five hours assum your dog 🐕 needs to poo 💩
Love the videos. Did you base your dog voice on Brian’s mum from the life or Brian?
I wish I had come across your channel when I got my lab puppy. 🥹
