This is Jack's first introduction to cold game, he has never picked it before - would you believe it?! The confidence we have put into these little pups has allowed the transition from canvas dummies, to the real thing, an easy process. The key here is to build that confidence going out for a retrieve initially, with your tennis ball or your dummies, until they're flying out each time and then ...

Thank you for this video I will look forward to more on this gun shot video,
Pretty good drill is that and Wolf looks good. One to follow I think.
Have you got any videos on reactive dogs please?
Lost credibility when you said "they didn't come like that", implying the dog previously followed the person around as a puppy. Anyone who's ever acquired a dog that wasn't a puppy has, in fact, had a dog that came like that, or a dog that doesn't think we're the most interesting thing, didn't follow us around, and maybe even had trust or other issues.
Those dogs are the best. up there with staffies
The fact you had to drag him lol. My cocker is like an extension of myself
The firm hand needed was absent in this video. When training a dog you need consistent orders. What happened in the video was rewarding not listening like not sitting
This is Rocco's introduction video for his residential training, an example of how he is with his owners. We had yet to put much, if any, work into him, however we have several other videos of Rocco on his progress.
You now have to see the next video to see the progress. This was good.
2:43 that ass wiggle was majestic my good boy sir
My Lab was doing well. Recalled to the whistle every time until two days ago when he chased a pheasant! I’m going back to a longline as I know he will now attempt it again. I was still putting him on a longline around other dogs and he was recalling well around them. He was off lead when he chased the pheasant. I feel it’s my fault for not building in distractions in a more methodical way. I know a sausage won’t trump a pheasant but the other issue is, I’ve been rewarding with treats all along! Back to the drawing board. He’s 7.5 months old.
Look up beckman's dog training channel. Great practical training and shows untrained dogs. Search Age Appropriateness. Very insightful vids on age appropriateness that I don't see anyone else talking about. Working on recall, probably wait a few months and he's got several techniques.
thank you again for the video.
Fantastic video thanks
Yet another great video 👌 Thanks!
Lovely video. This deserves way more views
This is great.. my Labrador puppy is getting really good at this down our road. But how do you then take this further to other locations? If I take him somewhere knew he would go back to his old sniffing self
You will need to apply the same principle in all new areas. For example a sit in the garden might mean something totally different to a sit on a high street, all behaviours need to be taught in all environments. Hope that helped!
There is great advice here. I have a beautiful black working lab, he's 10 months and the most wonderful house pet. He came to me at 5 months from a breeder; his litter was bred for odor detection work. My boy didn't have enough drive to make it through the program but he is perfect for our family. Very well settled in the house but plenty of energy when he's out playing. The breeder assured that if we continued encouraging calm behavior and worked his mind a little he would be a great pet and she was absolutely right.
Fantastic advice.
So, William sits with Carl for the full minutes of the video and clearly enjoys every moment. Well , that's the question answered, no worries.
Great advice Karl ,William looks very placid ,I would buy him tomorrow if I could lol
Another lovely video with great advice. Thank you 👍
Lovely. I’m still working on my 7 month old Springer. Hopefully he’ll be as good as Spud soon. Thanks for giving me hope..
Thanks for watching. He will be - you can do it!
Anybody else notice how Carl treats each dog as if it were his own ?? Good video.
hi mate am getting a working bred black lab pup next tuesday have got a 14 year old goldador but this pup will be the 1st one i have trained properly myself without other people interferring so want to do the best i can with him the intention is to go bush beating with him in a year or so and to make it slightly difficult i do have slight learning difficulties these are great videos i watch most days
Hi. great news that you are getting a Labrador puppy and starting his training straight away is so important. I have no doubt you will succeed. Thank you for your email and please keep watching. Our passion is our dogs and we are here to help.
Look up beckman's dog training channel and search Age Appropriateness dog training. Very insightful stuff that nobody else is talking about.
How old does the puppy need to be so start doing this?
Any age is fine
You had to recall him twice sir . If mine WAS FURTHER AWAY i could leave all 8 there and they would recall instant not twice . Consistant psychology is imperil . My military father taught me he trained military canines . Your boy is beautiful 😊
I do the same with my border collie but he has a pinch collar but sometimes it’s like he looks scared and sometimes h still goes ahead and pulls into the collar after months of me doing the same thing ?
This man speaks sense. How refreshing!
Thank you!
Refreshing to hear that treat training is not used to build a working relationship. Good video!
Good video , but all my dogs come running to me when they herd it haha
Thank you you explain that really well. I’ve got an eight month old American cocker spaniel. I’ll have to go back to the long lead. Finding it very hard to get her focus when other dogs are around.
Several comments with people training dogs in this age range. He's just hitting adolescence. Look up beckman's dog training channel and search Age Appropriateness dog training. Very insightful stuff that nobody else is talking about. Working on recall, probably wait a couple of months. 9 months is the worst age of dog ownership. He's also got several techniques and demonstrates on untrained dogs. Good luck.
My slip lead is a bit too thick and slightly stretchy and I need one that is non stretchy and that allows the dog to feel the correction a bit better. Do you recommend a particular one? Thank you.
Yes, we have our own range of leads on our website. We do an 8mm or a 6mm, we tend to use the 6mm on all our dogs - I have put a link to our product page below. Thanks for watching! www.kugaegundogs.uk/product-category/kugaes-dog-training-equipment/
@@KugaeGundogs Oh that’s perfect. Thanks so much.
I’ve been trying for a while now to get my 6 month old Springer to walk to heel. I’m not seeing much if any progress. It’s getting to me so much that I’m beginning to resent him and seriously thinking about re homing him. It’s a shame as he’s a brilliant dog in the house but as soon as he out he goes crazy. I’ve manage to do the training shown on this video 3 times a day for 3 weeks but I’m getting nowhere. I’ll miss him when he’s gone but I’m really unhappy with how’s things are going.
I'm no expert, but have a hungarian wirehaired Vizla who I rehomed at 8 months old and had difficulty with... First thing I'd say is 3x per day is too much for a dog who doesn't know what it's trying to do. Try leaving it for a week and then restart but only practise for 5 mins per day and keep it to the back garden or somewhere not too exciting until you have it mastered, then move on to the street, then the park when you're ready. Don't kid yourself, and definitely don't get frustrated. It's not an easy thing to do especially once bad habits have developed. You might have to use training treats to get the dog interested in the training when you restart to give it a new incentive.
@@houstygas thanks.
I second @houstygas
Clearly the dog would be better off with an owner who loved him and was willing to train him correctly. You have failed the dog, the dog has not failed you.
Did you see the first Spud video, complete hooligan?
Yet another pointless dog heeling video with a perfectly already trained dog

@@KugaeGundogs great. Thank you. You should mention that video in this one to help people. This one really shows very little of use.
I bought a slip lead in a local pet shop a few days ago. The shop owner asked, "why are you buying a slip lead ?" My reply - My puppy goes to gundog training. We use slip leads on gundogs because they don't wear collars when working." I'm sure he thought I was jumping on the bandwagon where certain online "dog trainers" use slip leads as a tool to correct poorly trained/poorly handled pet dogs 😆 No. She started going to gundog training from 4 months old and I trained the basics on a flat collar + clip lead. She will be 9 months old in a couple of days and has so much natural ability. Not a pure bred or pedigree gundog breed, but a 3/4 Gordon Setter, 1/4 GWP who came from an accidental litter. Her parents are just pets, but grandparents and beyond are working gundogs. My puppy has inherited her natural ability from hundreds of years of working Gordon (British and Eurpoean) and working GWP ancestry.
If they sell them, you'd think they would know what they are used for.
Being a gundog owner, I have 3 at the moment, I have always trained mine from day 1 on a s[ip lead yet we have 3 people who have dogs up my road letting their dogs pull the owners all over the place and out of control I have said to them to use a slip lead and I would help them but no they would not so I watch them being pulled up and down the road. Thank you for all the videos, can you do one on distances stop whistle please this is what I struggle with.
Slip leads are always our tool of choice! What Gundogs do you have? We shall add it to our list - thanks for watching.
I may be one of the people you talk about. I have a 3yo Springer who is very good walking on/ off the lead. I also have a 6 month old Springer who I’m finding very hard to get walking on the lead. I have got professional advice and there is still no improvement. It’s got the stage where I’m seriously considering giving him up as it’s getting me so down.
Thank God, you’re an actual trainer who doesn’t rely on treats like all these millions of amateurs popping up left and right who would not know what to do without a fanny pack on their hip.
she clearly already understands the command on leash - because every blow of the whistle she stops and sits - this doesn't show you how to teach the stop whistle in seconds, from the beginning.
in Seconds/? 😀
Good to see, hope we can get some follow up videos on how to progress this with the same dog
can you still get choke chains like Barbara Woodhouse used to use?
"Great job! Have you considered using TH-cam SEO to boost your channel’s growth? Optimizing your video titles, descriptions, and tags can help attract more viewers and increase your engagement."
This is amazing info! Very cool, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Trainer told me this about the sniffing,,,, game changer👍🏻
Just what I need. Thank you very much.
Great video Karl ,you can see improvement in that short space of time
Brilliant. Finally a trainer showing how it’s done with a dog that clearly has no training and not using a partially trained dog to make themselves look good. I’m looking forward to the next instalment.
I love your videos! Thank you so much for the great content! Can I ask where you got your whistle/the brand?
Good evening, Thank you! They are Acme Whistles, we sell them on our websites - The 211.5 is typically used for Labradors and 210.5 for Spaniels. kugaegundogs.uk/shop/kugaes-dog-training-equipment/acme-alpha-211-5-whistle-range-copy/
@@KugaeGundogs Oh very interesting!! Thank you! I am not training a gun dog but I find it fascinating and I have a 6 month Australian Cattle dog puppy I take hiking often so I feel like this could be useful. Do you know anything about which whistle might work best for ACDs? I’m aware they’re not a typical hunting dog so I apologize if this is a silly question or something you might not be sure about!
@@ginadell2112 Hi, thanks for your comment. Any dog can be trained to a whistle they aren't just for gundogs. We use ACME 210.5 which is the quieter one. The 211.5 is a louder pitch and my preferred. You can get these from anywhere on the interest but we also sell them on our website at a very competitive price. kugaegundogs.uk/product-category/kugaes-dog-training-equipment/
Excellent video--thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching and we appreciate your comment. ☺
My puppy (8 month old Gordon Setter x GWP) doesn't chase anything (so far...🤞), she constantly works the air around us then points when she gets close to the origin of the scent (so far, wood pigeon, collared dove, rabbit, deer and today, a cat). I'd say she's more distracted by the scent in the air than the actual bird (or other origin). She's my first ever puppy and first working line gundog and it's beautiful to watch her natural ability developing. We've only had 6 lessons so far with a gundog trainer. Good on heelwork, great recall, now learning to turn on the whistle while quartering and she has a very natural retrieve instinct 😊
Hi, a favourite of mine is Gordon Setters as you don't see many about. When we get breeds that are crossed it makes training a little more challenging as you have to work out the strongest gene. Your gundog trainer will be able to read the dog in time. It sounds like you are doing excellent after only 6 lessons which is lovely to hear. 8 months is still very young so let your puppies natural instincts develop. A lot of handlers push too hard and it can suppress the dog but it sounds like you are on the right track with a good trainer which makes all the difference. Welcome to the Gundog world, enjoy every minute. ☺
@@KugaeGundogs Thank you. Yes, I have a very good trainer who has previously owned, trained and worked both breeds. He has said she has lots of potential and like you, said it's important to not rush with her training as too much too soon could ruin her natural drive. She looks and moves like a Gordon Setter (except she's black with a white chest) but has the brain and instincts of the GWP. She even has fully webbed feet like a GWP and LOVES water 😊
Also, although her parents are not worked and the litter was accidental, my puppy's ancestry is 100% working gundog. Mum is a Gordon Setter, Dad is 1/2 Gordon, 1/2 GWP. Both sets of grandparents are still active working gundogs. Her maternal grandfather is a European Champion (whatever the European equivalent is to our Pointer & Setter Trials) 😊
