Digging new landfill cell with fleet of Caterpillar scrapers (Part 2)

  • When you have a tight time frame and close to 4 million cubic yards to move you call in Peed Equipment Company to bring in some of their large fleet of CATERPILLAR 657 and 651 scrapers to get it done! In this clip the spread is moving 50,000 cubic yards per 8 hour day to the rear stock pile which is a 7500' one way haul / roughly 2.5 mile round trip.

    To walk out on that site and smell the fresh dirt and the diesel fumes and a soft breeze on your face and hearing those monsters working is like heaven on earth. The scope of this job is tremendous and I’d love to be part of this. I helped build up levies once using the Army pans and moved from pan to dozer finally to graders. Loved every moment of that job.

    The most impressive thing is that company found that many employees willing to run scrapers and that are actually good enough to do the job.

    1) The amount of fuel used

It's fun to watch this and impressive but as an owner the costs to operate and maintain or rent these is unbelievable. I just got a 100 lot subdivision here and told owner we won't touch lots, let builders do it. Sewer, water, curb n gutter, sidewalk, pave it, power, gas and where done. About 5 pieces. Very little fuel. I own 2 scrapers we haven't used in 3 years. Work is shifting.

Is it because 57’s aren’t available? I’m not smart enough to figure out the application difference(s). Can you enlighten? Love all the SoCal videos.

    • @DirtSpread
      @DirtSpread 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      657s are self loading because they hook up. Front tractor loads first while back scraper pushes him. And then front scraper pulls while rear loads. 651 is called conventional single engine. They have to be pushed with a dozer to get a load. It’s a slower process and the single engine scraper gets lapped in the hills.

    Great video and thanks for posting! Love to know how much fuel you go through a day on a job this size.

    Is there a reason those connector "A" frames are left down when parked up?

      You would rather not leave the pressure on the hydraulic cylinders when in rest. They tend to leak down over time anyways.

      If you leave them up and the Hydraulics or air (on a Terex pan) leak out that's about 400 or more pounds dropping on your head.
