  • In this video I show you what I think is the best oil filter wrench tool - the oil filter cup wrench. It's one of my favourite tools that I own, simply because of how simple it is and how much easier it has made my life.
There are many different brands of these cups, and different sizes. Most oil filter companies will tell you what size you need, or have a tool to suit, if you look up your car on their product finder, otherwise ask your local auto parts store as the information should be in their catalogues.
Don't forget to like and subscribe.

Thank you very much for your video. I’ll go get one of these cups for my filter. 😅

      Thanks for watching.
My filter cup has come in real handy. I've bought a motorbike and it conveniently uses the same size cup as both my cars. And the service manual specifies that the filter be done up with a torque wrench, which can't be done without the cup wrench.

I have the BluePoint spider style. It's a bit of a combination of the two on the right in your opening shot. It has never failed me unless the filter is on the small side of the adjustment. It does crush the filter a little every time though.
A stuck 64mm Flute filter led me to the cap style because of the thin garbage thats out there. I had a filter that was incredibly stuck so there was some trial and error to find what would work. The area to work with was extremely tight.
Long story short I found that the cap style available at most auto parts places work fine in steel for filters that aren't stubborn. If the filter is really stubborn then it's highly likely the average steel cap variety will not work.
Reason 1. Most are too thin and will distort then slip on the filter.
    2. The thinner style without the nut welded on the end will not allow full engagement of your extension or ratchet because the tolerance is too shallow when the wrench is on the filter. When you fit the wrench on the filter then insert the extension, the extension makes contact with the filter and either doesn't engage all the way into the filter wrench, or it pulls the bottom of the filter wrench away from the filter and decreases the contact. It's likely either the extension will slip out of the tool or the wrench will slip from a lack of adequate contact.
    3. Some of the thinner varieties are for use with two different size filters, like 64 & 65. That decreases the contact and greatly increases the chance of distortion and slipping.
The first one I found in the thicker steel with a nut welded on was a 64 & 65 combo. While it was a pain in the a I managed to get it to work.
I have since found and purchased the factory Honda oil filter wrench. It has the thicker steel, the nut, it's specifically for 64mm 14 Flutes, and it's a snug fit. Stubborn filters of that size are no problem now. It definitely costs more than the parts store variety but it straight works.
