      OH MY GOSH - I cannot believe how well this worked on a 61 year-old Aurora monster model. True, it also took out some of the glue, but I'm ok with that because it makes it easier to paint the parts separately. Two questions: 1) how long will the Dettol stay "potent" if it's in a covered plastic container...or is it one and done? Second, over here in the states it's WAY over priced. Can your recommend a shop on your side of the pond (that ships) that carries it at a decent price? Thank you so much!@@gurufoxx

    • @gurufoxx
      @gurufoxx  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@roguehk Ha ha glad it worked for you! It should remain re-useable for years, to be honest, just try to somehow filter out most of the gunk and gloop and put it back in a sealed container or bottle and you are good to go.
      As for where to get it from the UK, to be honest over here it is sold in pretty much any supermarket and convenience store and even pharmacies and it literally costs a few pounds as it is just an everyday product. I am not sure where I would suggest other than Amazon UK, but you will pay for the shipping costs there, so I can only suggest hunt around or, if you know anyone in the UK, see if they can arrange to send you some.

    just came to this video after my first model became a gloopy mess after trying to strip with detol. I used Dettol on my Bandai 1/72 Millennium Falcon, on its radio dish.
    Id made a right pigs ear of painting it.
    I diluted the Dettol with water & it worked a treat.
    There was a gloopy mess on the first soak, but scrubbing with a toothbrush & some washing up liquid, rinse & re-soak with a fresh pot of diluted Dettol & the second soak & clean git rid of the rest of the gloopy mess & i was good to go with my re-paint.

    • @gurufoxx
      @gurufoxx  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There's really no point diluting the Dettol - it just makes it take longer to work and gives you that gloopy mess. Just use it neat next time, you won't have to do extra clean-up or a second soak :)

    • @WickedSlimShady
      @WickedSlimShady 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gurufoxx thank you for that.
      I was just being cautious as you know the Bandai Millennium Falcon is expensive.

      @@WickedSlimShady OHHH I totally didn't register that it was a Bandai kit you were working on! Yeah, you have to be SUPER careful with Bandai plastic. For safety, in all honesty I wouldn't even use Dettol at all, as it's the alcohol in it that's the potential risk, even diluted. I always use Oven Pride oven cleaner for their plastic, doesn't seem to do any harm :)

    • @WickedSlimShady
      @WickedSlimShady 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gurufoxxMe again,
      I bought a Belkits Skoda Fabia off ebay already built for £13 & it needed some attention (like in Wheeler Dealers, lol)
      BEFORE I saw this video I decided to strip the bodyshell with Dettol diluted & everything came off with no problem.
      But then i was left with a lot of gunk & then AFTER i saw your video that I should have soaked in NEAT Dettol from the start to eliminate the gunk.
      So i re-soaked the bodyshell in neat Dettol & while it has taken most of the gunk away, im left with little bits that feel literally welded on & i cant remove them.
      Ive tried label remover spray i got from work, re-soaking in soapy water, WD-40 and nothing wont shift those last few bits of gunk.
      Is there anything else I can try?
      Maybe that Oven Pride oven cleaner you mentioned in your previous comment?

    • @gurufoxx
      @gurufoxx  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@WickedSlimShady yeah, that gloop is what happens when water gets involved in the Dettol and paint equation (water and alcohol don't mix). You could try soaking it again in pure Dettol, but for a long time - I have no idea if that would work though. That gloop is like tarmac. Failing that, Oven Pride *might* work, but I have never used it for that. If all else fails, you may just have to remove it manually with blades and sanding, or write it all off as a learning experience and keep the model as a paint test mule (or paint it up as a decaying old barnyard find) :)

      For regular polystyrene kits, your plastic should be perfectly fine. Bandai kits are a different story though; their plastic is super special and weird and explodes if you even look at it funny. YMMV with Bandai plastic s testing is strongly suggested.

      @gurufoxx  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Viewer41Yep, sometimes overnight soaks are needed :) Once you have rinsed the Dettol off under the tap (make sure there is no paint, or almost no paint left!) you should leave it to air-dry for a while, just like when you clean resin parts. • @gurufoxx
      @gurufoxx  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't actually tried it on clear parts, to be honest. It would remove paint no problem, but I don't know if it would discolour it - worth testing on a spare clear part :) However, if you have a wonky paint line on a clear canopy, it's also possible to straighten up the lines by simply GENTLY running a cocktail stick along the frame - paints and primers don't grip all that well to clear parts so can be very gently scraped away from the window bit, leaving a nice straight edge along the canopy frame. If you want to learn how to mask and paint canopies easily, here's a handy guide: th-cam.com/video/WEZ8W1RXVFY/w-d-xo.html

    Hey, thanks for the vid! Very helpful as I've got myself a lot of models stripped!
    I just have a quick question - do you know what would happen if the dettol dries on the model? Call it paranoia but I would hate to miss that there's still some paint on the model and go to dry it off and cause the goopiness you mentioned. If you're not sure though then no worries

    • @gurufoxx

      Honestly I have never left it on to dry out like that so I am not sure. It would certainly smell nice lol. • @gurufoxx

      I would actually say an even better process that I found since I filmed this, is to brush and scrub everything off in the dettol as normal, then dunk the model in JUST washing up liquid, and scrub again for a bit, to remove any remaining paint or dettol, and THEN just go to water to rinse of the washing up liquid. The extra washing up liquid step helps make sure there is almost no paint or dettol left on the model when it hits the water and so minimises the risk of any nasty gloopy reactions.

      Sure, you can filter the Dettol out to get rid of most of the sludge, but in most places it's fairly cheap anyway. The Dettol will not do any real harm to your skin unless you have your hands in it for a long period of time but it will sting like a bugger if you have a cut - if you don't know, Dettol is an antiseptic solution that has been used by mums for generations, damping cotton wool with it and wiping it on their kids' scraped knees and cuts and bruises to clean them up, and used to be used in soapy water for cleaning floors and such in schools when kids barfed anywhere :D. Any kid growing up in the 1970s will know that brief sting, and that smell :) It's usually best to wear gloves just so that you don't spend all day walking around with hands that smell like a 1970s school corridor :)

      @@gurufoxx so got an update I left my metal model in new Dettol for 24 hours, I soaked it in fairy liquid and then gave it a good scrubbing. It has actually cleared a lot of the black gunk away. I’ve soaked it again and will leave it until tomorrow morning where hopefully it’ll be ok

      Oh no! You are not the first. Stick them back in the Dettol for a day or more and see if it loosens it up, you might get lucky (but test it on one first, to make sure they aren't damaged by all the extra soaking). If they are metal, put them in something hardcore like isopropyl alcohol or solvent-based thinners because metal can take anything :)

    Why wouldn't this work on Bandai models?

    • @gurufoxx
      @gurufoxx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bandai plastics are different to normal kits - they use a lot of ABS (which is damaged by thinners and solvents) and their polystyrene is not "baked", which means it is also vulnerable to thinners and solvents, more so than regular polystyrene. You could find your parts broken, weakened or totally dissolved by anything containing isopropyl alocohol, mineral spirits or Xylene.

      @@gurufoxx On a serious note managed to strip a lot of gunky stuff off my old models, still stinks of dettol but its a start. Any advice on getting rid of the paint in the very hard to reach crevices? I did transfer the models in the soapy water then dried them off, will it matter if there is still a bit of paint on there if I am priming it again?
      Thanks for making the video by the way!

      @@trydodgingthis Ha ha yeah, Dettol smell lingers! Your models will always have that school corridor whiff :) It's normal to have some little tiny blips of paint in hard to reach crevices, you can always use a dental pick or dull pin similar to gently pick them out but if they are very tiny and flat it's always possible they will not be visible once primed over.

    It's so expensive I dilute it.

    • @gurufoxx
      @gurufoxx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Diluting it makes it less effective tbh so it might take longer to strip. You can re-use it over and over quite a few times though, no need to buy more every time. It should only be £2-3 from your local supermarket.
