    Thank you👍🏻. I followed your directions (parts 1&2), it worked great. Now, my son has a (working) clock in his car👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    Did this on my 05. The hardest part of the repair was getting the 2 screws out. I did not have a TORX, so used a small flat blade screw driver and pliers o n the handle. I used a 15 power Zeiss eye loop to see that at least one resistor had indeed a cracked looking solder joint. I heated each resistor with the soldering iron for good measure and each of those 30 pins or however many there are. Works like a GEM! No need to spend $144.00 for a rebuild unit on line or more for a new one. Thanks you!

    Good video. This problem is the result of RoHS compliant solder, which gets brittle and oxidizes/breaks down. The best solder ever is a 63% tin, 37% lead mix. Low melting point, excellent flow, long lasting joint. I can't wait to fix the clock on my daughter's 05 Corolla with this information, and great solder. Thanks!

  • @ksajak

    Thank you! I had tried heating up the solder spots at the ends and it worked but it worked for like 2 days and now is off again. Going to do this next and hopefully it lasts. Thanks again for showing us how to do this 👍👊
    *EDIT*
    So I did this today (12/4/21) I added a good amount to each solder point and it seems to be working better than when I just put heat to the spots. It seems brighter but thet could just be me. We shall see how long this lasts. Hoping a while! 05 corolla

    Thanks worked like a charm. But at the same Time I wanted to replace the fan knob light blub. It is right there in that white cross tray behind the part removed to do the radio. If you can show how to twist the bulb in from behind with out removing all the cables and such that would be fantastic.I should say model year 2006.There is a video but an older model and the bulbs are easy pull out , push in.

    does heating up a nife or any metal object with a lighter and applying it to the solders make the clock work?

  • @haqitman

    Had this problem on our 05 Matrix clock. I just heated up the solder on the resistors to reflow the solder instead of adding any new and that worked too.

    thanks for the video. I will try it and let you know. One thing I noticed you soldered 3 resisters. Were there 5 resisters on the board? 2 horizontal ones and 3 vertical ones or were the 2 horizontal ones something else?

  • @seancsnm
    @seancsnm 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This did it for me.
    This might be pointing out the obvious, but I'd be willing to bet that the failure is a result of excessive heat dissipation through the resistors which causes the solder to heat up and melt. Once or twice this may not be a big deal, but if it happens often, the solder would eventually lose its ability to re-form a reliable conductive joint.
    tl:dr - bad design that needs beefier resistors.

    • @chrisbalfour466
      @chrisbalfour466 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +seancsnm I'm an electronics technician. I don't think the solder is melting at any point. Things expand slightly when hot, shrink when cool, and this flexing of the solder joint over time is probably cracking it. Also, the conformal coating on this PCB might insulate the resistors and worsen their heat dissipation. I think problems like this stem from lead-free solder being more brittle than leaded solder. It's been an issue with lots of devices since lead started being phased out (famously the Xbox red ring of death).

    This is very informative, but what is a sutter or soder? I'm not sure what exactly you were saying or doing with both instruments that caused the smoke. Are you heating them up? Please help.

    • @snoopda1andonly
      @snoopda1andonly  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The heating element is called soldering iron, and the wire that melts is electronic solder. The purpose of them is to re-solder the electronic components in the clock, since the solder from the manufacturer was poorly done. Let me know if you have any more questions. It is a common problem with the clock that was used on Toyota Corollas from 2003 to 2008. I am not sure if they used this clock on other Toyota models, but if they did, I would expect the same issue since these clocks are made in mass production.

    • @2bfrank657
      @2bfrank657 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just replaced the bulb on my 2006 Corolla clock. Hopefully yours works the same way. At the back of the clock is a green plastic bayonet style fitting. Unscrew this a quarter turn to remove. In this fitting is a 5mm diameter wedge type bulb (roughly 1 watt) with a little green rubber cover over it - you need to keep this for the next bulb. The bulb simply pulls out and a new one pushes in. Put the green cover on the new bulb and then screw the whole fitting back into the clock.
