Yeah, this was like the only Crystal Shard in the game that puzzled me completely when I played this as a kid. I mean, I know you had to break down a Stone + Cutter door first, so they may have assumed you need that power to reach the Crystal. It was still really unfairly cryptic, though.

Yoshi as a series never really stood out like Donkey Kong and Wario. While the latter two created their own style, lore, and styles of gameplay, Yoshi is MUCH more in the confines of the greater Mario series. And for much of the series history, they struggled to branch out from what SMW2: Yoshi's Island established(New Island being the most egregious example). It's a shame, because when Yoshi is good, he's REALLY good! There's a lot of potential with Yoshi, but they don't seem to really know what to do with the green dino.

Epic Yarn was one of those games I knew I would love just by the cover, and I did, I absolutely adored it from start to finish. Mindlessly easy perhaps, but I loved all the overly cutesiness and all the fun ideas that could only work BECAUSE it was a crafted world, like pulling a bridge closer to you by pulling a string, or revealing a secret behind a piece of fabric that you pull off. Such clever ingenuiety.

I still have a soft spot for Kirby's Epic Yarn. I kind of first got into Kirby because of Super Star Ultra, so I wanted a new Kirby game when Return to Dreamland was coming out. I asked for it for Christmas, but I got Epic Yarn instead. I didn't hate it. The game may be pretty easy, but I do like the unraveling gimmick. Plus, some of the boss fights have some great songs. Forgotten Land has some great songs in it as well.

Yeah, Yoshi has had it rough as a Nintendo franchise. Part of it was that Nintendo kept giving the Yoshi games to third-rate developers like Artoon and Arzest. Yoshi Topsy-Turvy is a pretty awful game. Yoshi Island DS and New Yoshi Island are just worst versions of the original Yoshi's Island. However, Good-Feel did bring us Woolly World which is definitely one of the better Yoshi games.

The main sticking point for Star Allies is that its quality fluctuates throughout the experience. The main story is similar in quality to Squeak Squad: not terrible, but its new elements don't have enough impact and almost everything else has been done better (co-op's probably the best of any main Kirby platformer though). On the other hand, the post game is fantastic (after the updates at least): the game just starts firing on all cylinders with the characters, modes, difficulty, references/callbacks, and lore. I loved the post game so much that I can't bring myself to call Star Allies bad, or even mediocre, though I wouldn't blame anyone for being a bit let down by the initial release.

I think yoshi's story, island DS, and crafted world are all "all right enough" games, just not on the level of most other Nintendo platformers (until you go 100%)
I know it makes it stand out more but I low key miss the yarn look from the early wooly world trailers. The 2d yarn Yoshi looks so goddamn cute
Fun fact, in beta screenshots the pyramid (despite seemingly being the same black one from dream land 3) was going to be blue because evangelion
Star allies main game is definitely one of the weaker Kirby main games, but as a longtime kirby fan, I found that A. It's really fun to see all the stuff from past games come together for one last 2d game for a while (from characters to music to story, even if it did take free post launch updates) and B. Guest star and arena setups have a LOT of replayability. Probably still my second least favorite of the kumazaki 2d quadrilogy but very fun regardless. It's also fun to see how stuff has been incorporated into forgotten land like the new intro to dedede's theme or LORE
I find super star's seperate modes as a concept enjoyable if you consider the modes to just be seperate worlds with one really boring treasure hunt in the middle and slight gimmicks in the other worlds
Welp, casual forgotten lands spoilers! And yep, I can't unhear perfect strangers for the Kirby theme thanks to Johnny's free riders review. Also forgotten land's soundtrack definitely took a second listen to sink in but even still, I feel like I can name relatively more bangers from most other modern games besides maybe the flagship Kirby games. Could partly be me being a whore for nostalgia remixes but still
Uhhhh, did someone cut out at the end or was that intentional awkward silence

I'm an episode behind on this, but I feel roughly the same way about the Dark Matter Trilogy(Dream Land) style vs the Adventure/Super Star style games, but I think I pin pointed why:
The copy abilities in Adventure style games are more numerous, yeah, but even still, the abilities themselves are...snappier, quicker, more mobile.
The Dark Matter trilogy has 7 or 8 copy abilities per game, but makes up for that with Animal Friend/combination systems, but vertually EVERY copy ability has wind up, stops you dead in your tracks, or are in general slow and immobile.
With Burning/fireball being the lone exception...IF it's just the standard version...and even that has it's drawbacks, like a long vulnerability window after the burning wears off, or a need to "recharge" cause it loses "fuel" if you spam it.
It's virtually the same difference between Classic Castlevania whip strikes and Symphony of the Night Crissagrim buttery smooth motion.
This is in part, I'm sure, due to the Dark Matter copy abilities and variations/combos being designed to solve puzzles first: how to use the specific ways they function to break specific blocks to get rainbow drops/heart stars/crystal shards, vs
Adventure style copy abilities designed to be offensive/defensive MOVESETS, with puzzles made for TYPES of powers, like fuses lit by fire based attacks, hard blocks or posts for powerful hard hitting attacks, grass or ropes for being cut by bladed attacks, etc, with many copy abilities having multiple options for covering those aspects.
But more importantly, the attacks rarely stop you in your tracks, unless you need to aim or charge up, and those are usually optional elements to the attack, they often feature a "dash attack" that bursts you forward, or in general are ABOUT moving faster somehow.
    Long story short:
Dark Matter Trilogy is a slower paced, play it safe to bring a solution to a puzzle style where every action needs to be considered in advance.
Adventure style is fast paced "go in guns a blazing like a hyper active child that was just handed a toy lightsaber" with more emphasis on how many different ways you can get from point a to point b while devastating any poor creature that happens to get in your way.
That said, I love both styles, because Kirby, but prefer the Adventure style.

20:00 In my opinion what make a soundtrack instantly likeable is when they use music for "stock" situations. Some OSTs try too hard to make a music versatile/dynamic (for example a level will have four themes depending on the setpiece you're in) but at that point it isn't easy to make it memorable as opposed to let's say, this game, where you're in a world and that world has one theme that is repeated multiple times and only changes in specific situations. THATS why old OSTs were catchy... unless it's like Ant said, where if a song is powerful, it WILL stick.

Ted, how can you say European video game titles always suck compared to North American ones when Shadow of Memories exists? Yes, that's also what the game is called in Japan, but it still counts. Shadow of Destiny makes the "game" (which is 90% walking and 5% traveling through time) sound more badass than it actually is while also sounding nonsensical. The main character's trying to rediscover his memories, therefore the majoritarian title is better.

Yeah, I may have been spoiled by Forgotten Land. At first I was really disappointed by how simplified the move sets were for each ability, along with the fact there were only 12 (two of them being virtually useless in my eyes), but after thinking about it, I realized that actually worked in its favor. In the modern Kirby games, there are like 20+ abilities, many with a bunch of moves you’ll likely never use intuitively. I always found myself having to pause to see how to do this one thing and it does get irritating because sometimes I look at a move, then I unpause, and then I immediately forget and have to pause again to check. In Forgotten Land, each ability is viable (though of course hammer and sword are the champs for cheesing the arena), but I never find myself dreading using any one ability. In the previous games, there were abilities I was interested in using, but they just weren’t that good. Or there were abilities I just didn’t want to use (whip, spear, and staff come to mind).

I do want a bit more complex movesets when they do this style again. Maybe not too crazy because I agree, some moves just suck (Doctor and Circus come to mind from robobot), but Fire got gutted when you compare the moveset to what it had since superstar.

I will never understand Ted's logic behind wanting smaller movesets.
You never HAVE to look the moveset up. If you wanna just breathe fire when using fire, you still can. All that shit is optional.
The combat in Forgotten Land is overall a step down from Star Allies, though the dodge and Witch Time make up for it.
Forgotten Land is great, but they should just lean all the way in next time. They clearly wanted a more in depth combat system with Dodges and counters but forgot to put in movesets to utilize them.

Also i picked Star Allies up after all the Updates and It quickly became MT favorite Kirby game(its not the best) Guest Star with all the dream friends brings so much game to the game and doesnt matter to me How easy It is bacause It has until now(forgoten land included) the most Fun and complexo combat in the séries plus the lore the main game, plus the Ultimate Choise plus heroes in another dimention brings to the table that expands even prévious games, It was too much for me, its a Very good game that people dont forgive because of its launch state, its not that way anymore, its never going to bê that way anymore, get over It the game is Very good

The powers in Forgotten Land are weird. Why is Sword the only one that replaces the slide with an actual attack? Why can I only use Fire's fireball move while I'm in the air? Why did they get rid of Ice's midair attack, making the whole power useless? Why do I need Galaxia to shoot sword beams when Sword could do that naturally since Return to Dream Land? Why is Bomb so weak now? Why does Sword have 500 moves but everything else has between 1 and 3?

    • @SonicmaniaVideos
      @SonicmaniaVideos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ignoring Return to Dreamland onward...using Slide with Sword since Kirby's Adventure has made Kirby do the Sword dash.
There's no dash-run, using Burning in mid-air (while moving) is the only way this would realistically work without just making it inconvenient. Jumping isn't inconvenient.
Ice's Midair attack is useless in 3D, whatever use someone had for it in the 2D games is now gone in favor of it just more effectively still shooting Ice normally and not having to be too close to enemies.
Sword can't shoot beam...I wonder if that's why ability upgrades are a thing, that idea to make abilities better or different had to come from somewhere.
Bomb being weak...again seems to encourage the upgrading aspect, the chain bomb is suppose to carry it, otherwise it would have to be overpowered in another game.
Sword has 5 attacks, with the 3rd upgrade having 2 more. Since the 3rd upgrade is the secret OP weapon...it makes sense to give it more attacks to make it feel special. And with all the abilities they chose for this game, sword had the easiest moveset to implement and actually make useful for 3D space. They can experiment more with a new game, since someone made note of how the 3DS Kirby Battle Royale game makes use of 2 buttons to do attacks...
      It's not that weird.

    • @Bobb11881
      @Bobb11881 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@SonicmaniaVideos Ice's midair attack wouldn't be useless in 3D. It hits 360 degrees around Kirby horizontally. If Hammer's midair attack isn't useless in 3D, neither is Ice's.
EDIT: It also allows Ice Kirby to attack without slowing down, which neither of Ice's attacks in Forgotten Land allow for.

Like I said, many 64-bit games look visually pleasing so it's understandable why people would want to make indie games based on that era, but Atari graphics are objectively ugly all across the board. You'll never going to see anyone emulate the extremely blocky vague shapes of the '70s and early '80s even if they have nostalgia for that era.
