QUESTION: Since the white is activated by light what happens if you tone down the light to get more green. Just thinking.... Light gives more variation right?
The variegation is from the result of mutated cells. In a chimeric variegation it is unstable and you can't predict it. Since they don't have as much chlorophyll, they actually need more light to be able to photosynthesize efficiently. If the plant is putting all of its energy into producing all white foliage, it will eventually die. The only thing you can really do is propagate it so the plant can hopefully go back to producing some green.
Perfect timing. Was having a random panic attack so I laid down to find something to watch and distracy myself and your video popped up. You may not know but so many of us are sooo thankful for you!!
Thank you 😭 that's so kind! Knowing I have helped in some way makes me so happy and I love being able to be here. I'm so sorry about your panic attack 🥺
I had to rewatch some portions of the video twice because I was distracted by the cuteness of Luna lol, those paws are trying to get the pole, sooooo cute. Hope your plants do well with green growth, it is a beautiful plant once it starts growing with good balance, don't give up!
😊 thank you! Luna was my little helper today haha. I have a little hope left it will grow some green but I keep hearing these plants are eventually doomed and grow all white 😵💫 Maybe I will get lucky this time! It was too expensive so I can't give up just yet lol.
It was so sweet seeing Luna laying beside you sleeping while you were cutting up your Adansonii. Rousseau Plant Care out of Atlanta sells the front closure plastic moss poles. I really like them. Also, @prettyingreen has a video on how to preserve all white variegated leaves on albo plants. It is titled Why is my Albo Browning. It might help with your remaining Adansonii.
Another excellent educational video. To twist the lyrics of the band The Byrds, to everything learn, learn, learn. Thanks for the video, I learned a lot
Seems to be quite common with the variegated adansonii. i see lots of You Tubers dealing with similar issues...unstable variegation! You know what you're doing however, so looking forward to seeing the update on this chop n prop Melissa. Chuckled with Luna on her back wanting a tummy rub..."look at me mummy, give me attention mummy!" hahahaha she IS cute and so are Star & Chai. Chai's purring in the microphone in your other vids is so ASMR for me I love it! You are so patient with them though while trying to film🤩 Thank you for all your content and time 🥰
Thank you Connie!! haha she was getting annoyed I kept bumping her with the poe lol. They are so such sweet cats! Yeah, this plant is a headache! I'll see how it goes but hoping for some green!
My Syngonium Albo reverted to all green so I had to chop it down to just one leaf. I decided to still keep the all green 3 leaf cutting and root it in moss just to see what happens with it. I now have a new growth point coming in on the base plant so I'm hoping it comes out with variegation 🤞😁🤞 I have my fingers crossed for you as well. Can't wait to see an update in the future on your Adansonii Variegata 😁 You made the right choice. 😊
I hope yours turned out well, I had the exact opposite issue roughly at the same time, a little earlier maybe. My syngonium albo was giving half moons followed by full moons, chopped it into as many nodes as I could and only got one to give me more balanced variegation. Now its half moon to half moon, but it only has two leaves and could revert either way now and I don't have any more to chop lmao.
I think that happens quite a bit with that plant, I’ve seen a couple people struggling with you same exact issues as you! This happened to me with my Monstera Aurea 😢 at the time, I really didn’t know much about variegated plants, and I actually found it inside of a regular Delicioso. But I’m left with a plant that gives me nothing but all yellow and maybe a tiny bit of green so I feel your pain! I hope you have some success and will keep us posted. GOOD LUCK
Thank you so much! I'll have to share an update in some time after they grow. I know it's so frustrating trying to grow them sometimes. I definitely wished I had done more research on this plant before purchasing!
I had to laugh when I seen you saying this was the plant to chop. I knew this was driving you nuts. I knew we would have a video soon on this plant. I am learning you! lol
haha It was definitely bugging me! It was time for sure. I probably should have chopped it back sooner honestly. I knew the all white growing was just over with for the plant.
This video was very educational but I have to admit, sleepy Luna stole the show for me lol I’m so jealous that my cats don’t just observe and nap around my plants. They’d rather try to attack them
Thank you! She's so sweet and loves this sunny spot now that it's getting colder. The 2 female cats I have could care less about them I feel I got really lucky! 🥺
Hello! I learned a lot from every time I watch your blogs I have a problem about my adansonii variegated it’s barely surviving, all leaves are all white n few green variegation
I needed this video. I've been considering buying the adonsonii japanese tricolor and but Im so worried the leaves would go all white. Might stay away from it. 😊
Yeah, it's so tough! I regret buying mine. It was so expensive at the time too so definitely felt like I wasted my money. I feel like I am going to get more white to grow again after this 😵💫
Yea, I’ve had a very similar journey with this plant and I’ve only had it 3 months. I just got it as a small rooted 2 to 3 leaf propagation and it wasn’t 2020 prices but it wasn’t cheap either. Well, it came with mealy bugs! 😳🤬 I contacted the Etsy seller and they were very apologetic and instantly refunded me (thankfully) so I spent about a month treating it and it was growing. 🥳 When I was finally able to pot it up with a small moss pole it started growing all white. 🤦🏾♀️ I just recently chopped mine up and it’s currently in a prop box. Thankfully every node had roots already, the nodes all activated and I see at least 1 that looks promising. All I can say is I’m even happier now that I got that full refund so at least I didn’t pay for this misery 🤣 and I have a regular adonsonii to watch grow while the variegated one tests my patience. Sorry this turned into a bit of a story time. I just think it’s such a coincidence you put this out right after I chopped mine. Good luck with your props!
oh no! That sounds like a headache for sure with the plant and everything you went through from the mealies to it growing white UGH glad you got refunded. I feel like that's why I haven't given up on it because I paid too much 😂😭 Hoping for more green for both of us!!
I have a half moon vine...i chopped and propped and on the original stem 3 nodes activated...now there is one new all white vine (growing super slowly) 1 vine doing a mix and one completely green so far... 3 leaves in😂
But gorgeous gorgeous plant🙌🏾 i bought 2 and was gifted one and they are all different and amazing...like watercolour paintings... but i definitely prop as backup🤗
Thank you! I shared an update in my last full plant update vid in December! All that's left is 3 cuttings - the rest didn't make it and all 3 are growing all white leaves haha go figure. Probably going to toss them honestly 😩
I couldn’t get myself to throw the all white leafs either! High hopes for those cuttings with plenty green, I hope they give you a full, beautiful plant in the near future 🪴💚
Hi Melissa! I’m having trouble finding a cat safe insecticidal to spray on my plants…do you have any suggestions? Things like Bonide don’t reveal all ingredients and I can’t find anything saying that neem oil in general is safe for them :( things like alcohol and hydrogen peroxide def aren’t either so I feel stuck
I would think dr. bronner's castile soap would be okay but maybe buy an unscented version? I don't use any kind of insecticidal sprays anymore just castile soap in between rounds of mites. If your cat gets into your plants I would just rinse the soap off after 5 minutes so it can have a little time to work on any pests on the plant.
Awe darn. I was gifted a cutting because they thought it was really cool that it was all white with just a green stripe down the side 😅. I don't think it's going to make it then. Your video taught me it has nothing to do with the light. Not sure there will be anything I can do. I do appreciate your video. Thank you!
You hope to have a highly variegated plant, but you also want it to live 😂 Everyone I’ve seen grow this plant has had it do this all white thing and rapidly unalive itself. Strange, stubborn plant! I hope that yours beats the odds!
Have you tried Silica? This stuff actually works, I started using 1 month ago. It works amazing, I noticed it stopped browning on my golden sport epipremnum.
Thank you so much for this video. I just got my first adonsonii albo, it wasn’t in the best condition, but your video was the most informative and helped me a lot!🤎🌱

I hope you are in a better head space now. 🤍 sending love and prayers your way now and this week.
This plant in its regular green form is way awesome just the way it look the shine and sheen on the all green leaves I love this plant very much
Yes! I love my regular adansonii! It's up on a moss pole and huge now. As much as I love the variegated versions some are just not worth it!
I understand, I feel that way about all my plants lol
I love Luna. Laying on the table on her back like rub my belly not the plant. So precious! More Luna!
She loves sitting up on this table now that it is getting cooler. It's so warm in here and the sun comes in more too 🥰
Luna steeling the show in the background, it's so precious!
the science behind it is so interesting and you explained it so good!

Ahh its so beautiful but its not good😭 Have you tried giving it lower light?
Lower light will actually not help the plant unfortunately :( It needs as much photosynthesis as it can since it lacks so much chlorophyll.
Is there an update video?
Do you have an update on the top cut?
It all browned :( everything has come in all white on the rest. I still have a couple cuttings I planted with an all green one but no luck so far.

The original plant had 2 half moons. At some point will always become full green or full variegated. Pretty bud deadly lol
Same thing happened to mine and now it seems like its reverted. 🙄 I just can't win with this one.
On the all white, just cut the roots off of the white leaves. No need to save them. You’re throwing away the all white leaves
Yea get rid of the white leaves it’s not healthy or attractive
That’s such a shame that it has so many white leaves. Hopefully, the props will be at least ½ green. Thanks for sharing Melissa!
I think the white leaves are pretty! I'll treat it like a vase of roses and when it starts to wither away I'll toss it 😁
Smoke show.
What a waste. :/ My swedish ghost finally died, too. It was a torture seeing it happen.
