Pancake lenses can be the ideal street photography lens for those who enjoy smaller camera setups. It's not always necessary to pack a large zoom lens or even a fast aperture prime, because in street photography often including more of your image in focus is a preferred way to shoot. The compact size of a lens like this Sony 20mm f/2.8 means you never need to worry whether or not you can fit your camera kit in a bag or jacket pocket.

Began with a NEX-6 and then on to the a6000 and the 20mm which is constantly on it. Although I also take more kit with me sometimes, like the 35 f1.8 on the a6400 or even the Zeiss 55 on the A7R 2, the first combo always comes along in a pocket (no strap) and shot from the waist with the screen out.

I shoot with a GX1 and the 14mm 2.5 (I also use the 7artisans UFO lens a lot) and it’s been the best setup for my black and white candids pretty much ever. I sold off everything else and only kept my GFX50S so I basically have the smallest lightest camera I’ve ever used and one of the heaviest and slowest cameras but they do their specific jobs better than anything else!

Just picked up an A7C II and a Samyang 35/2.8 and while it's not super pancake it still fits into a jacket pocket without too much issue. No matter what I did I couldn't get on with my X100F so was trying to replicate that in a FF body and think I've got it bang on.

Honestly you're so right! Real camera is such a place to go for cameras and lenses, always give you great quality gear, Love my Sigma Zoom that I got from them 24-40 2.8 for Street, the wider the better, getting to capture a wide field of view is so important when doing street, unless you want specific subjects.
Imo, all you need is a 20-24mm lens, a 35mm, a 50mm (if you want Pentacon 50 1.8 is great for the price) an 85mm for portraits. when doing street. I don't care too much on the 135mm but they are nice sometimes.

For street photography I like to use my Sony A5100 with the E PZ 16-50 F3.5-5.6 pancake kit zoom. It has a usable image quality when stopped down to F8 (not good as the 16 or 20mm pancakes, but hey, it's a zoom lens with oss), i like it's quick autofocus, and when shooting video, the OSS is very decent for even today, and it's relatively small.
However if I want to bring a little vintage style to the photos, I "fill" my pocket with 3 little Pentax 110 lenses: 18-24-50mm F2.8, as they can fit everywhere as they are very tiny :)

Excellent video. These are the lessons I've been learning in my journey as a street photographer. The photo I sent you in the contest email was actually shot with a Panasonic bridge camera (FZ80/82) and that sensor is TINY... But I think the technology inside that one plus the super zoom make it a very fun, easy, and interesting camera to use.
    I also have a T2i, 80D, and a 5D Classic

    • @BigBenAdv
      @BigBenAdv 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't think there's anything wrong with having smaller sensors as long as they do the job you need. i.e. You might not necessarily want a low-end tiny sensor camera that doesn't do well at high ISO if you're always doing shoots at night.
My first camera (to call my own) was a Pany FZ-20 that my buddy (semi-pro photog due to his career in creative arts & media) helped me choose.
It ticked the right boxes (at the time; 2004) for what I needed to learn the basics of photography - Aperture/ Shutter Priority + Manual Exposure modes, a (super at the time) zoom that covered at least the 28-70mm (135 format) range, and a relatively fast lens (F2.8 throughout the range) to learn about depth of field. Heck, it even had a 'macro' super close-up mode.
Only after I had picked up the bare basics would my buddy then introduce me to using mechanical film cameras and other more 'niche' use prime lenses (fisheye; ultrawides; macro etc.).
All things considered, the FZ-20 was amazing for its price point during that era. It didn't quite have the high ISO performance of an APS-C camera (Canon 300D/ aka Digital Rebel) but it was much better than a happy snappy point and shoot.
In his words: Just shoot what you think is interesting even if you're using full automatic mode. Moments will pass you by if you're trying to adjust for technicalities in the shot. Composition (framing) and the story you tell is more important than whether the image has great camera techniques applied behind it.

Hi George, I love the Ikigai diagram! I need that! I too am a nut for pancake lenses and prefer the 28-40 mil. As of late, I'm using touch to shoot on my digital rangefinders when moving quickly between streets. In these cases, I need the smallest, most nimble yet responsive kit. I'm seriously considering getting a small sony set up and leaving my Fuji at home during travel for these instances.

After 35 years of photojournalism, my two favorite cameras for street photography are the lightweight Nikon D5 and D4s. I like taking four lenses. Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 AFS, Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8 AFS, Nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 AFS, and the 200mm-500mm f/5.6 VR. Then gear is built like tanks and cover all the focal lengths I need.

A camera and lens combo I really liked for street is a Lumix GM1 with the Lumix 42.5mm f/1.8. It's not a pancake but it's smaller than most APS-C or full frame cameras with a pancake, and gives you that portrait reach. Probably better combined with a more modem body even if slightly larger. The 2013 autofocus and lag and ergonomics of the GM1 aren't great. But I like that I can attach it to my sling bag strap as a second camera and it's just kind of there, can shoot it without disconnecting.

I prefer a strap or capture clip, or to have my camera in hand. If it’s in a bag or pocket… I just don’t use it as much. That being said I have loads of options depending on what flexibility or compactness I want. King of Kompact is my Sony Rx100 VI which is awesome for the flexibility of the zoom - but this wee thing is why I no longer shoot M4/3. I do have multiple Sony APSC, but personally the one that pairs best with the 20mm there was the A5100 - but of course no IS on that one. It’s very small… and the flip screen is great for street shooting.. Sony Full Frame wise the Zeiss 35mm F2.8 is a great option and will fit in a large pocket if you care about that. The 28mm F2 is not bad, but definitely not in the same league optically… My fav for Sony Full Frame is the 35mm F1.8 - this one definitely pushes out of being pocketable, but provides better AF close focusing, and the best option for shallow DOF if you want to also do some street portraits. My last 2 options are usually the most fun… My Nikon FA with the 28mm F2.8 AIS is a great film option (also have the 50mm F1.4 - but these days 50mm is way too tele for me), or the Leica Q3. Again not pocketable, but you feel very present when you take these out. The Leica Q3 is definitely very fun to put in the 35mm crop mode and use like a rangefinder.

In 2019, after 15 years of APS-C DSLR and mirrorless shooting, I went full frame with a Nikon Z6... and kinda regretted it? The FF body sizes are fine but the extra heft and size of modern full frame lenses have made me less inclined to bring my camera along when I'm doing something other than dedicated shooting. I now have the 28mm and 40mm primes which are small and lightweight but I still feel the pull to go back to my Sony a6000 as an everyday carry.

I ended up going with a used gen one Leica Q. Zone focus is a must in the street imo, but isolating subjects at wide aperture is very challenging in hectic conditions. The Q is the only real option to offer both in one "small" package. I used that 20 many years ago on the A6000 though and it was supremely compact and usably sharp.
Oh.. and fwiw, I think you maybe meant Venn Diagram? The technique used to visually represent Ikigai there, which is a specific Japanese philosophy of sorts. Unless I misunderstood. Which is quite likely from my experience 💩

      @GeorgeHolden  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

That's cool! And yes that was a Venn diagram of the Ikigai process, Ikigai is just my analogy for the perfect meeting of needs. Just trying to make my ideas more visual!

      Hey!
I would never call the quality of this lense "poor".
I think for this size it´s the most quality you can get out of a lense. And personally I like that it´s a bit softer - gives it a natural look.
Of course the 20mm f2.8 pancake is not as sharp as premium glass, but in my opinion thats not the case of use for this lense.
I got this lense most of the time on my A6500 and this combination ist so small - I take it everywhere I go.
The best camera is the one you take everywhere you go. And thats the case of use for me with A6500+20mm f2.8 pancake.
If you wanna go for the best quality of course you have to buy bigger and heavier lenses.
A good alternative to the 20mm is maybe the Sigma 23mm f1.4 lense.
I dont own one, but Sigma is never disappointing.
But of course - its bigger.

Personally I do prefer (high quality) zoom lenses as they do offer more versatility. When being around your own kids, this can be a key feature. Kids will almost never stop for a picture. My personal choice is a 28-75mm Tamron f2.8 and a 50-400mm Tamron F4.5-6.3. I will never need another glass.

    I am beginner in photography.
    I bought a used Sony A7s2.
    New 24-70 2.8 lens.
How much power flash would be enough to shoot outdoors? I would be doing street photography and portraits.
I would want to take this flash with me easily and during travelling.
Should I go for on camera flash or off camera flash
This would be 1st flash that I would buy.
What are your suggestions for flash?
Also suggest soft box and tripod (either camera or flash would be tripod as I can hold only 1 thing) for travelling.

    • @magiccarpetrider4594

You probably don’t want to use a flash for street for many reasons.
If you insist, note that flash requirements on 24mm are v much less than 70mm.

For my street photography I use one or two Sony a7RIV with one prime Lens on each Camera, a wide angle Lens on one Camera and a short tele on the other Camera, my Lenses are 14, 21, 24, 35 (two), 55, 65, 85, 110 and 135mm, I do NOT like the focal length 28mm and 50mm for full frame format, I think they are more or less useless focal length, any focal Length shorter or longer than those two focal length ! If I want to go real compact, I take one Camera with the Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar 35mm 2.8 T* ZA Lens.

The vast choices of cameras today is a plus, and a negative. I am an old timer (70 years old) I always used Olympus OM systems because of size, and quiet shutter. I preferred the 28 mm at f 5.6 or f8 which I always carried set in a depth of field scale. I never had to focus, I could even shoot without looking.
Now in my day people were not as aware of photographers as they are today. Everyone today thinks one has some nefarious intention with the photo, I can't say I blame them since photoshop has made manipulation of images very easy. My age & gray hair has saved me from some angry individuals wanting to beat my butt for taking a shot in their direction. I will make one bold statement A.I, will put the final nail in photography' s coffin it's over folks.
