How long do you reckon you could hold 5k pace for? What distance should the team try next?

Half marathon pace, but try a pyramid session and see who can last the longest

Great episode! Really fun and motivating.
I really don't think I could hold that 5k pace for very long. Probably somewhere between 100-200 meters. That's a crazy fast pace.
As far as speed callenges go, I was going to say world record 10k pace but just saw that you guys already did that one. Different world record ultra marathon paces would be interesting. Like double marathon pace, if you haven't already done that.

To be fair you should let them get to speed since it's a 5k split. Give them 40-60 yards to get to speed. That push sprint just kills your endurance right away. I do this type of training for speed.

I run 2.4, 5 and 10K distances only. Can only do sub 60 for 400m simply because i have been doing SITs (75 metres) and recently for the past 4 months hill sprints. I also do strength training for the legs using resistance bands. Upper body would be bicep curls/push ups. The neuromuscular stimuli from shorter intervals are also good, i prefer very much 200m and 400m intervals. About to start some plyometrics, it's supposed to improve RE as well, other than impsorve explosive power. Age 52 here.

Yeh, I remember the days of high school. Just to break 60 seconds in a quarter mile was a bear. At the 3/4 mark or 330 yards, was when “The Bear Jumped on Your Back” Lactic acid swoops down through your body from head to toe and after that it is just a matter of survival. I really miss those days. Ah, to be young again! Later on in college, the 800 meter race was even worse. You had to deal with “The Bear” for the last 200-300 meters. I do not know how I survived; except for being young!

How about an attempt on the UK Women's Record Half Marathon Pace. Eilish McColgan's 1:05:43
    That's 3:10 per km or 18.6 seconds per 100m
Try it in a 5 by 100m relay format on the track.
Pick your best 5. (or only 5 😉)
The first person runs 100m then passes the baton to the next person the first person stops and waits at the 100m point.
The second person runs 100 passes the baton to the third person then stops and waits at 200m.
The third person runs 100 passes the baton to the fourth person then stops and waits at 300m.
The fourth person runs 100 passes the baton to the fifth person then stops and waits at 400m.
The fifth person runs 100 passes the baton back to the first person then stops and waits at the 100m point.
Repeat until you fall off the pace at one of the kilometer points (Or keep going for a team half-marathon time).
It is brutal interval training 18 second sprint 1:12 rest. Repeat for 1hr 5mins

  • @TheLaprasMan

New challenge idea: have the team race eachother in a 5k but everyone starts off at a different point of the course depending on their speed. So since Andy is the fastest he begins at the beginning and has to run a full 5k, someone who's a bit slower would start further up, someone whose current fitness is half the speed of Andy starts 2500m up the course etc. Would make for a thrilling finish
