    Thank you so much for watching! Hope you enjoyed it! I was in Cub / Boy Scouts from like age 6-18. I loved camping. I love outdoorsy stuff. I miss doing that stuff. Wonder what it would've been like nowadays with smart phones and such. Gosh I'm old.

    Former beaver, cub, scout and venture scout here.
    Beaver - mostly playing games and running about
    Cubs - more adventurous, sports, did things like climbing and abseiling. Also covered some basic home tasks like ironing, sewing, etc.
    Scouts - mostly adventurous, DofE, kayaking, abseiling, etc. Camping and backwoods techniques.
    Venture Scouts - honestly... mostly drinking in the pub down the road from the scout hut (we were now 16+ at this point) and fundraising on weekends to fund longer trips and activities, skiing, etc...
    Oh yeah and Gang Show... If you love acting, singing, etc... Scouts and Guides of all levels put on yearly variety performances across the UK.

    • @Bjenga
      @Bjenga 8 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      It hasn't changed as far as i'm aware (i'm a scout leader). The point of Girl Guiding is that boys have historically had a lot of things specifically for them, and sometimes girls need some space and a chance to do the same things as scouts, but without the sexism that usually comes from boys thinking they're better just because they're boys (trust me, even in a group with a few girls, and more than half the leaders being women, the boys still think they're better.)

    • @kathrynrobinson1624
      @kathrynrobinson1624 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Boys can't join Guides. GirlGuiding members have been asked about this a number of times but have always chosen to stay girl only. The girls really benefit from the girl only space. We can do pretty much everything the Scouts can do, but with the freedom to one week be camping out and lighting fires, and the next week be making face masks.

    I'm American and I've been in girl scouts for a long time, but my troop never does anything fun. all we do us host lame parties that nobody comes to. I really wish I could be in boy scouts because my brother is in boy scouts and I really wish I could do some of the stuff they do. It just seems so much more fun than girl scouts.

      Adrianna I get what you mean. I'm English and I'm in girl guides because I don't think we have Girl Scouts because girls can go to scouts if they want. But in my guides we go camping and do stuff like scout about (a big festival where guides and scouts come together to do a bunch of cool stuff) but in most meetings we either do some sort of craft cooking or look at the history of guiding which I nearly know off by heart because of how many times I've done it.
      I also once said to my friend that guides was a bit boring I might join scouts, she called me an ungrateful bitch and didn't talk to me for the rest of camp 🖕🏻
      We also have to camp with the brownies which is the most annoying thing in the world!

We were literally 11-16 year olds in a circle holding hands and chanting in unison

    • @lmaoroflcopter
      @lmaoroflcopter ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brunettekoala pretty normal more like. It's the scout promise.
      Scouts had this throughout, it depended on who led it whether it invoked a diety but something like:
      "I promise that I will do my best
      To do my duty to God and the queen (though guess its king now),
      To help other people and to keep the Scout Law."
      Was said when raising the flag.
      Culty? Nah, just reiterating the promise you make as a scout or guide.

    Hey I'm from Britain, and I'm a girl, so we went to rainbows, brownies, and then guides. They taught us to bake and stuff, make tea, and crafting etc, and every year, we would go on a trip called brownie holiday, where we would get to go in a house with no parents and sleep in bunk beds and stuff. And then in guides, they make you clean out a graveyard every month. I found a dead fox that's bones were showing, a live hedgehog, and a dead raccoon😖at the end of every meeting we would have to sing a song about God and the queen (but I've forgotten it). And to get into guides/brownies you had to do a ceremony. Also, you are all split into groups: the elves, pixies, gnomes, etc and every group had their own song that you would sing at the start for everyone. The oldest kid in the group was the sixer, and the second youngest was the seconded, who were in charge of the group😂

My leader had a son who was in Boy Scouts at the same time her daughter was in Girl Scouts so everything we did was outdoor and nature oriented. I'm a Brownie Young Leader and I'm so glad they've made Brownies much less religious nowadays: they changed the promise to get rid of the pledge to God (and you could just leave that bit out before that if it was against your beliefs) and we now focus much more on developing the girls' personal beliefs about life and themselves. There are still some very religious units but they are few and far between and it's so much more accepting and open minded now which I really like.

    Oh man Girl Scouts is boring, honestly it's really pathetic in America. I remember crying about the fact my brothers got to do all this amazing stuff I couldn't and that they got to carry around the packet knives. Surprise surprise girls, the troop leader got all the pocket knives other wise your troop would get into a bit of trouble with the higher ups. We couldn't even earn it like the guys could! It was so infuriating because nothing was really scouting! It was like sewing and the build a bear workshop badges with fake camps. No Philmont for us.

    • @harrywpotter
      @harrywpotter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It was even worse for my troop we didn't even have pocket knives that the troop leaders kept. We sold cookies late February to early March. Then nuts late September to early October. All the badges we got were for selling things or like you said sewing. We even did a salon day badge where we got together for our weekly meeting and brushed each others hair. We had 3 camping trips in the 10 years I was in Scouts but one of those was at Hershey Park so it wasn't really camping. The one good thing about Girl Scouts in my area is the summer camps but those aren't with your troop. You sign up on you own and have to pay a lot of extra money.

If you see other countries groups there are genderless scout groups, and we don't even sell anything to do what we do. Girls can use knives, boys can join girls troops, they just treat us equally, not as a boy or as a girl, just as a scout.

      BadWebDiver , All British boy scouting is based on the Jungle book for the rankings of the scouters leading each pack! Akela is the highest rank and is usually the leader of each pack and Bagheerer is usually second in command. At least it used to be that way but I'm ancient(50)! It might have changed now? Also I now live in America so my 3 sons went through BSA and my grandson can't wait to join next year. Having experienced both I much prefer the British scouting to the American but then my pack was a very established and driven one so we always did well in competitions with other packs. I'm 14 and this year, thanks to scouting, I will be going to Kenya to help orphaned boys in 3 different safe houses across the country. Being a scout is so much fun I have been one since a beaver and I'm now an explorer scout. It's an amazing way to meet people and grow as a person. But I will have to say if I told people that every Monday I go to a little scout hall and play games at 14 they might laugh. But oh well, it's fun! :)

    As an Australian girl guide this video was super interesting! Our promise involved God and the Queen up until recently when they changed it to "I promise that I will do my best to be true to myself and develop my beliefs, to serve my community and Australia, and to live by the guide laws"
    We also have girls in Scouts in Australia, I'm not really sure why haha.
    Recently they changed the labels in guides so that no matter what age you are you are still a "guide" although in scouts the age brackets are
    6-8 Joeys
    9-11 Cubs
    11-14 Scouts
    14-17 Venturers
    18-26 Rovers

      In the UK (up to like last year) the promise was like:"I promise that I will do my best, to love my God, to serve my queen and country and keep the Guide law". I think that Girl Scouts can be very different depending on your group and your troop's focus. I was in Girls Scouts (Brownie through Ambassador) and I loved it... My troop still meets up in the winter and have dinner at the melting pot. As a troop, we were very service oriented but we did a camping trip, badge lockin, canoe/kayaking trip, and a hiking fitness track (with archery and other activities) every year. As a brownie, we learned all the stuff the Cubs did. We learned how to start a fire and maintain a safe campsite, we were expected to cook all of our own food at campouts and clean all of our mess-ware, we could read and identify animal tracks and poisonous plants, animals, and bugs, we collected our own materials (kindling, etc.), etc. I mean yeah we did crafts and things of that nature but they were always practical. I mean I can identify emergency signals and signs of an animal disruption at a campsite. I can read a map and compass (you need both in the wilderness), and identify constellations and animal calls, so I think it was fun. Plus the uniforms and regulations were not as srict as they were for the guys.

      I'm struggling about why in the USA there aren't miked scout groups like in the rest of the world, like... why?
      I'm in a colombian scout group, and we accept.. Everyone! Literally everyone. Baden-Powell never said "Divide boys from girls and do your own gender role" that's the opposite of union, and as a scout we are all the same despite the gender, race, nationality, etc. We are all brothers...

    I just got back from scout camp (I'm English) & I smell like fire. We all made a den to sleep under in groups of 2s 3s and 4s and it was so cold we all huddled together, we all made a big fire and roasted marshmallows, me and a friend lit the Kelly kettle up and made everyone hot chocolate, we told stories. It was amazing. Cold but amazing. My scout troop is boys and girls. I love it.

      that's something I don't get. Why UK and United states don't make genderless groups? like... The rest of the world? I mean, I live in Colombia, and there are few boy and girl scout groups, but the rest of the groups are just... Scouts. And we get kind of mad when non-scouts call us "boy scouts", not even here but in many other countries. So why in the US and the UK there aren't genderless groups?

    • @SophieAA0307
      @SophieAA0307 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the UK, Scouts is genderless - it used to be boy scouts but now females can join too. Girl Guides is only female however, and every girl in my unit has at some point expressed that they enjoy that, particularly in knowing that they have an option to go to a mixed gender group, or come to Guides and be with all females :) (I was never a scout as their activities didn't interest me, and my friends were girl guides, so thats what I went with and I've never regretted it)

    I did Girl Scouts from kindergarten to 4th grade. there was daisies (two years with a blue vest ), brownies (2 years with a brown vest), junior( 2 years with a mint vest or sash), and I don't know what's after because I quit after the first junior year. my troop did the derby one year and mine got disqualified because we could only decorate them and I had built my own. the girls in my troop never liked me except for a few but it would never last long. the moms hated me more they blamed every problem I had on my parents being gay (the rest had straight parents). my parents never told me these things until I quit and I remember crying for hours because it was my fault I put my parents through the homophobia but my parents kept letting me do it because I liked the trips we went on and the crafts we did.

    I really enjoyed this video. As an achieved Eagle Scout myself I can relate and understand a lot of the sentiments in this video. I don't know if you were ever told about them but there were things called High Adventures that were very similar to the thing that Sammy was talking about, one of which being the Philmont High Adventure in New Mexico where you could spend two weeks in the summer hiking a couple of mounts and doing tons of activities.

    It was really disappointing to hear his super casual troop in the uk. I’ve been a scout in both Ireland and Italy and am a leader now and even the American troop sounds less impressive than what I would’ve expected. I honestly thought that it would be harder to become this supposedly super difficult “Eagle Scout” considering that is the normal routine for even just your last year of explorers at age 15/16. And then further in Rovers/Venturers.
    As for the religious aspect, that has been removed by now in most countries.
    I went to the 2011 World scout jamboree in Sweden and the American troops were so... meh and really stood out as the only ones without girls. Hell there were Muslim troops with girls in headscarves and the Americans still refuse to accept girls? Ridiculous.

    I was a scout in the UK and we always did loads of stuff. We didn't get badges for the stuff we did tho but we had so much fun doing it. We would go petrol go karting, rifle shooting on camps on a special shooting range, host a valentines meal for parents each year, cooking competitions, midnight hikes on camp, long lessons about knots (one of the leaders was kinda obsessed about knots!). We would go down to the nearby river and make dens in the woodland next to it. It's due to scouts that I am able to read maps so well and cook loads of stuff on single hob burners. It was one of the best things I've ever done, I highly enjoyed every minute of it. If I could do it all again I would ☺️.
