Instead of plywood, I upgraded my horrible tiled backslash with simple foam board cut perfectly to size. I covered it in bold wallpaper and attached it to the wall with two sided velcro command strips. The fake wall also hides the wires for the undershelf lighting (yes I used a wireless light switch - love those!). Because foam board is light, command strips hold it incredibly well!
I am moving next month and have been trying to figure out how to have a colored wall without painting since that isn't allowed at my new place. I had been planning to go with P&S wallpaper but it will end up being really expensive and a pain to remove when I leave. This is an amazing hack you have come up with. And the command strips? What a great time saver! I do have one question though, as I would be using foam board for the entire wall: if you had to use more than one board, how were you able to avoid seams where the boards meet showing?
@@barksnbrews Possibility consider using construction hard foam insulation which comes in large sizes. I do believe they come in different thicknesses also.
@@MizzAriCast My thought is that the foam board is just a thin base on which to adhere your contact paper or backsplash covering material so that it us easily returned to the original renter space. There are great compand hook adhesive dots and straps that can be used instead of using contact paper directly onto the wall surface that can leave terrible paste residue that is very difficult to remove.
@@pamm2230 yes i love that idea and understand using it as a base. My question is would foam board as a base hold up on the wall behind the stove. My electric stove has one wall behind it and wonder if the heat that comes off it would damage the foam board i would adhere to the wall behind it. Any Thoughts?
This is the most incredible makeover I've seen in a very long time. The way you brought this from a bland and plain tiny kitchen to the very high end looking space is just beyond impressive. This is fantastic. GREAT, GREAT, JOB.
Finally somebody did a more realistic video on how to “remodel a rental”❤ I loved how the plywood idea gave you the liberty to hammer into it, everything you wanted (without touching the rented property). The other idea I LOVED was the trash bins under the sink…PHENOMENAL!!!! THANK YOU…you are a genius 🤗❤️
The secret is to find a landlord that rarely visits, a place that looks worse when you find it that when you left it. The literally do not care if the place enables them to rent it FAST, with minimal clean up or repairs. I hope the guy paid for the faucet & was grateful for the free labor. My maintenance guy complimented me on the smokehouse I built out back & loves the small changes I made in here as I told him I'd be leaving it. LOL

The Plywood wall is really genius and such a samrt idea for customizing a rental space bc it gives you so many options to design and attach things to it.
How to you prevent mold between the plywood and the wall? In a humid environment like a kitchen, covering the outside wall without ventilation seems risky to me.
Any smart and reasonable Landlord would ask for those changes to remain if your friend leaves the Apartment. It has made the place look so so much better than before. I'm sure they would get a higher rental for it. I loved the drying rack and also the metal frame you put on the back wall. Such simple changes but also beautiful and functional.
OH. MY. GOSH! You are amazing! You truly are a MacGyver! I loved so much about your video (so much that I subscribed and chose ALL for notifications--I loved how you described the various shortcomings of the space and what your solutions were to resolving them. I especially loved the wonderful filming that truly showed HOW you did what you did. I know you mentioned several times that these solutions resolve how to customize RENTAL spaces without permanently affecting the property, like how NOT to drill into existing walls but to use plywood "new" walls instead. My husband of 51 years passed away and there are things in my home I would like to alter to make them more usable for me. BUT...my husband did all those things and I don't know how. I'm absolutely terrified of trying for fear of damaging existing walls, cupboards, etc. I'm not a renter, but this is my home and if I screw up something I could cause permanent damage. YOU are showing others like me to try alterations YOUR way--your way doesn't damage existing structures, so if we get it wrong, we just take down the "non-fix" and start again--no worry about destroying our home. That is such a "freeing" feeling! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
This renovation was EXCELLENT! It inspires the aspiring diyer to make their space what they imagine it to be. This video truly aligned with the title of your channel and what you provide as a content creator! Thank you and I can’t wait for the next project.
Tile on both sides was definitely the way to go! Also love the black / wood contrast. Had you planned that from the start you could have done the bottom half black and top half wood so it doesn't change the look in the middle of the window. Your unique ways to make rentals feel unique and personal are amazing. Your apartment deck transformation from a while back continues to be my favorite of your transformations!
I’m not sold on the two tone plywood wall, however, an absolutely genius solution!! I LOVE the whole transformation and the unique, creative ideas! I’m 55, living with my mother, (due to unforeseen circumstances, life happens) and I’m sitting here, yelling to no one “I CAN”T WAIT TO HAVE MY OWN PLACE AGAIN!!” 😂🤣💯❤️
I really enjoyed seeing you’re vision executed so perfectly. It came out beautiful. It actually appears bigger than before, which is odd, being that you went from white to black! I love it
What a realistic tiny rental kitchen makeover. Genius use of space over the sink with your MacGyver dish drainer. Putting the contact paper on the small fridge makes a real difference.
All I can say is-- WOW!! This is truly clever and beautiful work! (I just had to edit to say how much I love your ingenious use of tension rods! Such an unusual idea that works in unexpected ways!)
I can't imagine why the landlord wouldn't be completely blown away with this makeover, it's absolutely awesome, I have never a tiny kitchen that I want for my own, but this one I definitely would swap for my large kitchen diner. It's gorgeous 😍
The wall is genius. I saw another blogger’s rental-friendly option for the wall using Ram board which took paint well and you can cut using a box cutter or heavy scissors.
This is very cool! It's definitely a challenge when you can't put holes in the walls. I've been using free standing shelves for vertical storage, but lately have been considering doing something like "diawall". Basically you turn 2x4s into tension rods. And then you can build shelves or a wall onto them. It seems very customizable and people get pretty creative with what they can do!
It's a bit unusual - that you can't paint or drill holes in German rental flats. You just put it back in its original state if you're moving out. Though it's frowned upon to paint dark tones you can't easily paint over. And drilling holes in tiles 🧐 - only when necessary. But the average time you spend in the same flat is also about 5 to 10 years. I think for students though it's a great idea - to individualize it. I liked the daylight lighting - though a way to protect it and diffuse light might be nice 👍
Another great video from the plywood wall, to the dish drying rack. You truly made a transformation happen genius ideas. The espresso machine is super cute 😍
I love this! I see so many "renter friendly" makeovers that I know will lose them their security deposit with water damage and the wrong types of adhesives. The plywood is genius!
Absolutely Brilliant!!!!.. love this makeover..👌😘💞💞💞💐 you allways give great tips and ideas. I love that you broke up the black wall with the wood stained piece. I love this so much..the floor..brilliant!! Thank you xx
Loved the way you used the space above the sink, in Italy we have those drying racks built into the cabinet above the sink, I haven't seen those in any other country I've lived. It's such a great way to use that space and save time as the plates etc just live right there where they go to dry. And since it has doors like the rest of the cabinets (you keep them open while washing and close when done) nobody even sees the dishes on the rack. Some drip directly into the sink below and others have a slide in tray to catch the water.
Everything you did was genius. You’re so creative. I love the black tiles on both walls as well as the contrast of the plywood walls. Wish you lived near me to do my entire home over! Great job ♥️🫶🏾👍🏾👏🏾
