- Hey guys! I'm Alexandra Gater and I show you how to do rental-friendly upgrades and DIY projects on a budget. New videos every Saturday! Today I’m making over a tiny rental kitchen and upgrading it with renter-friendly changes like peel-and-stick backsplash and painting the cabinets a beautiful green colour. I hope this gives you some ideas on how to upgrade your own rental kitchen on a budget!

I am LOVING that she said "Green is the new neutral" As someone with nearly exclusively black/ white items in their home, I recently branched out & have velvet green sofas, a rug with large leaves on it, & tons of plants. If nothing else green definitely is a neutral when you have plants around!
Green is my favourite so to me it will always be a staple. Another nice neutral could be a tan or terracotta for you
That's my color palette, too. Black, white, wood & plants, with splashes of green and terra cotta. I never tire of it.

Yes, those earthy greens🪴 are truly growing🌿 on me in design. Olive green is in my clothing color palette. It goes handsomely with black🖤, white🤍, brown🤎, gray⚫, chambray blue💠, navy✨, & pops of red🍒.
Everyone was taken aback😳 when my dad 🖌️painted a tall dresser chest in a vibrant kelly green & added gold campaign style accents. It's mod & blends quite remarkably with his darkly finished Thomasville Zen suite.
When it comes to home 🏡 interiors I favor black & white too, but I find it needs grounding with at least a few pieces of naturally stained timber🪵 items too. A velvet sofa is def on my ⭐ wish list〰️and green is very appealing. It strikes me as both elegant & elemental, so I'm starting to see it's value as a neutral.

Painting the cabinets does change the whole look, but I've never been in a rental where the landlord would allow a tenant to paint them. That green paint is gorgeous.
That's what I was thinking! If they're already painted, that's one thing. You can re-paint them to the original color. But faux woodgrain to olive green? All my landlords would've charged me the cost of buying all new cabinets.
I am allowed to paint anything but the kitchen cabinets 😅 they’re just white now which is ok but it’s too boring for me

I've seen several Canadian DIY people who have done similar makeovers in spaces; I think their tenant rights must be different than the US
@@littlepixieme1 Nope! I've rented for a long time (in Canada) and you definitely cannot paint cabinets unless you clear it first with your landlord. Hard to reverse if they are wooden cabinets with the grain being visible
I love when you mention all the prep that goes into a shoot (the driving around to pick things up, sourcing items, etc) I would LOVE to see a video documenting all the BTS that goes into a makeover. Love how the kitchen turned out!

@Susette Smith As in artwork, a lamp definitely adds an inviting warmth. Makes what could be a more functional & utilitarian space feel more like another cosy living area. Layered light is always a smart design element.

My initial reaction to the kitchen was “oh those countertops gotta GO!”, then the paint plus the backsplash totally made them look amazing!

I LOVE how you made the ugly orange countertop and floors look so good by bringing in the orange accents…copper pots, lamp, rug, etc. Great job!!
That green color actually makes the counter and floor color look so much better. This is great! I’m so glad you walked through the work it takes to redo cabinets. It’s a ton of elbow grease but so much more cost effective than replacing, especially if they are still in good condition!
I'm moving to my grandma's old place in a couple of weeks and the kitchen looks exactly the same as Meghan's old kitchen. I REALLY needed this video!! Thanks team AG! The new kitchen looks amazing 💥

Oh my gosh, that green cabinet color is so nice. This might be one of my favorite makeovers that you've ever done; you really turned that drab little kitchen into such a cute space!

ngl i actually liked the original cabinets but the shade of green is amazing. I love how warm everything is, i could totally see this in my own home and that's not something I say often (even tho I often really love looking at styles that I don't wanting my own home, I still really enjoy the look in other spaces so that doesn't mean I love it less)
I liked the original too! But the transformation is lovely too.
Agreed I feel like the original color is more timeless and can be updated with multiple styles over time to stay current

Me too. I love original wood color and I hate them to be painted but at least this was done in a very nice, different way.
@@monicavictoria787 Yes exactly what I do in my kitchen. I keep my cabinets in wood tone and just change the styling of everything else to keep it fresh.

Love your enthusiasm in decorating. Fun to watch young people in Interior Design. Speaking of using table lamps on kitchen counters- I have been doing that for years! Love the ambiance of cozy light. You can find them really cheap at thrift stores! I also like to elevate display items with vintage trivets and cake plates on legs.
I loved everything. The white caulking was distracting though. It was like an outline around the cabinets. Beautiful color for the cabinets. The copper pans are awesome. And she is lucky to have glass doors on the cabinets to see the pretty containers.
I thought the same about the caulk. There is paintable caulk.
Unusual that a landlord would let the cabinets be painted. The green looks lovely.
If the land lord knows who alexandra is they might be all about it

I think the space looks great but I wish the “rental” aspect of the series was more consistent to true renters and rental friendly updates. I think this makeover should have been in a different series personally based on the permanent aspect of the cabinet paint.
Looks so pretty however the side of the stove looks so plain I will do a back splash 😜
The landlord must have felt like the cabinets were dated too.

One of your best makeovers lately. Love the retro vibe! I got a stand up grow light that has 4 arms that stretch out and can be bent and moved around. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever bought. My plants love it 🌱

I’m always so jealous of Canadian renters! Here in Australia, renters have 3 or 6 monthly landlord inspections, and hole drilling/ painting is OUT!!

It looks lovely! Personally (because I love colour and mood), I would have painted the end wall (the one that the cooker is against) a deep teal/blue/turquoise colour. I think that would have gone brilliantly with the green and also with the copper and the orange of the counter and floor... But I think it's a great change as it is too.
I wish you went with the blue light, but other than that, the kitchen looks so great! As alway you did a fantastic Job, Alexandra & Team!! Also I really appreciate the editing, so smooth to watch!

GREEN is the new NEUTRAL. Perhaps :) GREEN is definitely the always NATURAL. It's a soothing color and the softer forms tend to combine quite easily with other colors.

That green! It’s the perfect green for the kitchen, works so well with the floor and the countertop. You are genius!
Fantastic transformation. I couldn't love that green more! And the copper pots look so pretty hanging, even moreso near those green cabinets.
About the new jars - they're not safe against food moths because the lid usually doesn't sit tight enough, with the IKEA ones it sometimes even plops up on its own. I use screw jars exclusively now because almost all the other pretty jars do not close tightly enough, even though the rubber thingy in the lid suggests it.
