This is another song of the summers of my youth. Canadian groups and singers were quite a thing back in the 70s. This is such a cool tune featuring a bangin' banjo. Thanks, Stampeders and 🇨🇦 for the memories. I say it all the time.....Oh, Canada!!!!

This song was a big hit here in the states. It always gave me a positive feeling. I think the banjo has something to do with it. I didn’t know there were any other versions. I actually never knew who did it. Now that I know they are Canadian, the French refrain makes more sense. 😂

I also never knew about the James last version (1975). The Stampeders' version (1971) is the only one I've ever heard on the radio over the decades. It received almost endless airplay. Still does on some of the oldies stations. The Dave Clark Five did a version of this song the same year (1971) because the Stampeders version failed to chart in the UK.

Stampeders guitarist Rich Dodson wrote this song 1971 and played the distinctive banjo. Written in Dodson’s basement apartment near Bloor and King Street in Toronto, the song’s infamous banjo line was actually an on the fly decision he made on the way to the studio. “I had originally written that part as a guitar lick,” he says. “We were recording the album at Toronto Sound Studios and one day, on the way over, I rented the banjo because I just thought it would sound cool. It really was that wide-open back then. “I love Montreal,” says Dodson. “I’ve always had a sweet spot for that place. That city was good to us in our early days, and so the French part of the song, ‘bon ci bon,’ is sort of a little nod to them.” It is one of the few regularly-played Top-10 hits to have a banjo as its primary instrument. The following year in 1972, the song went on to win a handful of Juno Awards including, Best Single, Songwriter of the Year (Rich Dodson), and Record Producer of the Year (Mel Shaw), with the band being named Canada’s Top Group overall.

In Canada the riffs are typical as it mimics the guitar licks also known as the Mouth guitar Rik Emmet of Triumph does the same thing back in the 80s, Try another song Then came the Whiteman another of their songs and they do a cover of the old Rock n Roll Hootchie Koo back in the 1970s Minstrel , Hit the Road Jack ,Ramona , Rocky Mountain Home is earthy like most of their music. Most Canadian Bands are underrated but earlier bands in the 70s broke down the barrier with US Market at the time those who lived close to Canadian border heard music stations from the North and others from the soyth heard guys like these years later.
Triumph played the US festival aka Mudfest on the second day and gave a million dollar performance while Van Halens DLR forgot a lot of his lyrics and Iron Maiden played great .
