I remember this great Canadian rock group & had their albums. They started out in the 60's but their biggest hits were in the 70's. "Oh My Lady", "Hit The Road Jack" (featuring Wolfman Jack), "Carry Me", "Playin' In The Band", "Wild Eyes", "Monday Morning Choo Choo", "Devil You", "Ramona", "Minstrel Gypsy", "New Orleans" etc.

I want to (happily) cry hearing this. I was 4 hearing this the first time. Just makes ya happy. Took me years to realize that Bon c'est bon, c'est bon, bon was French!

I wonder if anyone ever thought of pairing them with Mungo Jerry on a tour back in the day. They could've jammed together as an encore to the concert. Add the Lovin' Spoonful and the night would be perfect.

I first heard this song back in 1972...I was 14yo. And The Stampeders recently did a remake, all original singers, and their voices have never changed. Love this song.

Love the Canadian content, try April Wine, Teenage Head, Spirit of the West for a truly eclectic sound from the past!

Good review. I like how you actually apply the lyrics. I believe it's a mandolin in the recording. But it could be whatever. The wholesomeness part you're describing has got a lot to do with that stack of background vocals.

"Wild Eyes" is one of my favorites of the Stampeders, more grooviness.
I would recommend another 'lost' Canadian band, Chilliwack with the song "Fly at Night"
    Peace Biz.

Sweet City Woman reminds me of when I worked at a radio station in Ontario, CANADA back in the mid to late '80s. I did producing of morning talk and Sunday night talk shows, traffic reports and DJ - ing, This song was in "heavy rotation" then, so I played it a LOT, because they were a Canadian group and we had to play a lot of "Canadian content." The song had to be ONE of these things to qualify for "Canadian content" : written by a Canadian, produced by a Canadian, performed by a Canadian singer or group, or on a Canadian label. SO if only one of those things was true, it would get a lot air play on our Canadian stations. It was a fun time for me while working there for a few years, part time when my kids were young.

Remember the song didn't know who did it. I thought they were singing something else instead of "sweet city woman" like rhymes with city but begins with a "T."
