I went to watch and listen to an all night concert at the London Colosseum in 1968 and the warm up band was Free. Paul Rogers was magnificent, and especially Paul Kossof's vibrato on the Les Paul Gibson guitar blew me away. The band performed all original numbers, and nothing was faster than a walking speed. Free have been one of my favourite bands this last almost sixty years, and Paul Kossof is a legend. In the seventies, all the great rock and roll bands around the world from the Beatles to the Stones and every band in between took a poll to see who they thought was the greatest rock singer, and it turned out that Paul Rogers was every bands favourite singer.
Palm muting the strings gives this "instant dampening" effect. It can be also be employed by the fretting hand, just by lifting just enough to stop the vibration of the strings. Not enough to get a harmonic, but a deadening effect. Paul Kossoff ..mad respect as a rock guitarist
Oh man. This is such a great freaking song 10 out of 10. OK so they were still playing this song in clubs in the 80s. I will tell you specifically 1985 because I was 16 and was having the best night of my life. I met a guy. We danced for a couple of hours. He did not take me home to his place but he did take me to a hill about half a mile from the club. And we watched a meteor shower for two hours. Don’t even remember his name never saw him again. It’s just a wonderful memory and that song brings it all back every time
At one of my High School dances, back in the day, it featured a local Bay Area band and Paul Kossoff showed up to play with them as he was friends with the band members. I was blown away. It was a great time to be growing up and a location for music.
There is a reason Paul is called simply the Voice. He is also one of the nicest guys ever. I got to hang out with him several times when I ilved and worked in LA.
Have heard this song countless times for nearly a half century. Until today, because radio stations rarely filled the listener in on trivia and facts, I had no idea that Paul Rodgers was the lead singer with Free prior to him being in Bad Company. Also didn't have a subscription to Guitar or some other music trade magazine. This is one insight into how the interwebs have changed getting information and finding things out instantly.
Guitarist Paul Kossoff was one of the best players in the world. He was once asked by Eric Clapton how he created his guitar vibrato, Paul didn’t answer and thought that Eric Clapton (is God) was trying to belittle him. Sadly Paul was taken from use by drug addiction and we all wonder what would have been. However Paul Rodgers’ voice has mellowed and got better and better over his career. One last fact in the video the bass play Andy Fraser was only 15/16 at the time of this TV show recording. I’m 68 and they are the soundtrack to my teenage years.

Looks like he's accepted those prayers, this is from last year "Asked if he is healthy now, Paul told KSHE 95: "Yeah, thank you. Thank God, really. But I do thank hyperbaric [oxygen therapy] as well, which is the treatment you can get. You just sit in there, oxygen under pressure. Oh I Wept by Free is a song definitely worth listening to. It highlights Paul Rodger’s dynamic range in his voice. Although everything by him is just incredible!
I was fortunate enough to see Paul and Jimmy Page in their band "The Firm" at the LA Forum. Absolutely fantastic show. There are some excellent live vids of this incredible band on TH-cam.
Paul Rodgers is the best! He still is performing like this to this very day, well maybe not so much hip swag. No one sounds like this or ever will! Truly one of a kind.
Supposedly the death of Hendrix was one of the things he could never fully deal with because he was Kossoff's idol and contributed to his addiction and ultimately his death.
Seagull and Silver, Blue and Gold from Bad Company are his best! Soft and beautiful songs. If you like Paul's early stop/vocal cutoff in this song, in Silver Blue and Gold's chorus' eponymous line, the "Blue" is this cutoff that eluded my terrible but joyous attempts to sing along.
I have watched thousands of music videos and this has to be one of the finest live performances by any band ever. Every one of these guys were outstanding musicians and this was such a great song.
Having seen Bad Company somewhat recently, I will say Paul’s voice has held up better than most in old age. If anybody is a fan, and Bad Company is on tour near you, go see them before you can’t.
True story, friend of mines grandmother was a bit of a "wise woman" reading tea leaves etc. she lived in Stockton when Paul was young and he went to her for advice. She read his tea leaves and said he needed to quit his job and go to London if he wanted to be a success. He did and within a year he'd formed a band and was getting noticed. He wrote a letter to her thanking her for her advice.
Congratulations on your analysis, it's one of the best on TH-cam; it's a pleasure to discover that some of the groups I liked the most in the 70s are so appreciated now... and seeing them again, it confirms why I liked them so much back then... they're still great...!!!. @@rupipa Brilliant live band.....Sensational Alex Harvey Band were excellent too...I saw Budgie at the Marquee club...Judas Priest were the warm up band 😅
It really impressed me when I found out that the lady who does these reviews was an opera singer herself. I went and checked out the opera stuff she did with her self-critique and I was floored. She reminded me of great musicians because she was super in-control of herself and feeling every note at the same time. Watching her do that really, really changed what opera meant to me. When I hear the interplay between Paul Rogers and the music going on around him here, I feel the same way. Rogers is totally in control and awesome and being blown away by the power of the music at the same time.
Wow, thank you. I listened to Bad Company growing up and I heard this song many times BUT I didn't know it was Paul Rodgers singing All Right Now. So, new appreciation for everything. The more you know.
Elizabeth, Take a listen to Fire & Water from "Free" in 1970 - live performance, great song. You can see Paul in his earlier years. Same fantastic voice, and excellent guitar tone from Paul Kossoff. Andy Fraser, the bassist was literally 16-17 yrs old. crazy
Great to hear this again!. My band was playing a restaurant gig in Perth, Western Australia, and an older and very well spoken lady with a hint of an English accent came up after our set and shared her appreciation for our band, and said how it reminded her of the spirit of her brother's band back in the 70s....it turns out she was Paul Kossoff's sister (step sister). One of those moments.
Bad Company was my first concert as a youngin' and I've been a huge fan since.....huge voice... Can't wait until you get to some Bad Company...Deal with the Preacher, Silver Blue and Gold, Seagull, too many to mention.. and of course Can't Get Enough

Another great Free song 'Woman' - fantastic vocals
Seagull and Silver, Blue and Gold from Bad Company are his best! Soft and beautiful songs. If you like Paul's early stop/vocal cutoff in this song, in Silver Blue and Gold's chorus' eponymous line, the "Blue" is this cutoff that eluded my terrible but joyous attempts to sing along.
Those two songs are sublime and my favorites!!
@@chrisbodi6470 Yea, they have definitely lifted me out of some dark times
Paul Rodgers rock vocals are THE BEST. I met him once backstage and he was such a sweet human ❤ And yes, tight white jeans...
Not only was Paul Rodgers in both Free & BadCo, so was Simon Kirke the drummer.
I have watched thousands of music videos and this has to be one of the finest live performances by any band ever. Every one of these guys were outstanding musicians and this was such a great song.
Base player is 15, & he co-wrote this gem.
Having seen Bad Company somewhat recently, I will say Paul’s voice has held up better than most in old age. If anybody is a fan, and Bad Company is on tour near you, go see them before you can’t.
So glad you analysed Paul with Free now you need to analyze Glenn Hughes, you will love him, trust me
Glenn Hughes is a legend
Oh I just love the raw live sound 70's rock. So glad can still hear it today.
He STILL has that voice
I had the pleasure of seeing Paul Rodgers fronting Queen, first row. The man's a powerhouse live!
0:09 Rodgers is the ultimate front man voice for rock. He could sing for any band.
Please please PLEASE look into interviewing Paul!!! I think he would love to talk to you about his music!!! ❤
Congratulations on your analysis, it's one of the best on TH-cam; it's a pleasure to discover that some of the groups I liked the most in the 70s are so appreciated now... and seeing them again, it confirms why I liked them so much back then... they're still great...!!!. Thank you very much for sharing...!!!
Good God I’m Old 😊
But it’s a good old.
I really find joy in the fact that I was around then.
We really did have a lot of great music.😊
THE BEST EVER!
Born and raised with Free, one of my father's favorite bands. All on vinyl too, spoilt for sure
I couldn't wait for Elizabeth to get back to Paul Rodgers. He is one of kind. I love the way he sings with so much feeling. I would really like to see her reaction to Paul Rodgers - Be My Friend - Free Spirit - Royal Albert Hall. It is an amazing performance.
Paul Rogers has the ultimate rock and rock voice. 👌
The Navy ship I was on had a double helicopter pad. 4 outdoor speakers and amps to give orders to the flight crews. They would play music on slow weekends at sea. I always ilked this one. Your reactions are always informational.
I love how you light up so much when you hear old people's music I wish you'd share this with more people
I know you have reviewed Paul Rodgers & Bad Company. I'm excited to see you reviewing Paul with Free! I might suggest Wishing Well along with Fire And Water among other Free tunes for your consideration ❤
My favorite living singer. I can't think of any other singer from the 60's that not only still sounds good, but sounds even better.
I agree. Tom Jones still sounds pretty good too.
Love your appriciation of what I grew up with. I'm 60 years old.❤❤❤❤
Kossoff’s guitar tone was fantastic,
I'm so happy that you found Paul Rogers...
I absolutely love Paul's singing voice. The guy is awesome.
Paul Rodgers lives here in BC now, overlooking Okanagan Lake. Apparently he jams with The Sheepdogs band occasionally.
Paul Rogers is one of the best vocalist I think I've ever heard in this type of music so freaking great.
You should be obsessed with his voice. He's one of the top frontmen in Rock history.
60/70s UK was such a great time for amazing voices. Absolutely love Paul Rodgers! Smooth and crispy at the same time is absolutely apt. Now I‘m just waiting for some Humble Pie and Steve Marriott. Their cover of For Your Love haunts me since I first heard it.
Steve Marriot ''Five Long Years'' on youtube shows off both his voice and guitar playing....I saw Humble Pie about 7 or 8 times....I is old
@@owenoneill5955 Let me just say that I‘m very jealous!
Any or all of the tunes they do on this show are great! What a band!
Andy Fraser, the bassist was literally 16-17 yrs old. crazy
Agree!
Me too @@SopranoPizzaJMFNJ
I was going to suggest Mr Big from the live album
@@alsleet442 absolutely !
Watching the drummer I just want to keep repeating "ANIMAL... ANIMAL!"
Bad Company was my first concert as a youngin' and I've been a huge fan since.....huge voice... Can't wait until you get to some Bad Company...Deal with the Preacher, Silver Blue and Gold, Seagull, too many to mention.. and of course Can't Get Enough
And after this vocal analysis check out the videos where Free is performing live on Isle of Wight, amd then there’s of course the record ”Free Live”
Knowing a bit about him it would not surprise me if he was being very calculated back then …he is known as a dude that pampers his voice and takes his craft seriously…to the point there are haters ….always are I guess …anyhow you rock lady …I get as much enjoyment by seeing how passionate you are as I do from the performances themselves…all the best and keep it up !!!
I was idly thinking of checking back through all the videos to see if this had been covered, now I don't have to.
A truly classic rock song!
