What was so sad, is he never let loose like this on any other song, but went AOR for some damn reason. The Deuce could of been in the BTO neighbourhood style if he would of kept on bringing it. Sadly he had the monkey on his back when he went to LA.

Jerry Doucette always rocked hard. I saw him in person at the Yellowhead Hotel Lounge in Prince George, BC Canada in 1981/82 winter. Less than ten feet away. He was a miracle on the guitar like Randy Bachman and Rik Emmet. Love it. Thanks Harri

I will never forget, 1978 30,000 in the stands at the Ex, Jerry opens for Triumph, and before he plays "Mama" they come out and give him his Gold Record for the single of Mama, and the Gold for the album. Jerry then proceeded to rip off a 12 minute version, and the place goes nuts. Triumph refuses to give Jerry an encore, and for the first time ever Triumph got booed when they came out, in their home town. Damn Jerry owned them that night.

Can honestly say living in Vancouver where that song was produced and as much airplay as it received from its release and over the decades I’ve never got tired of it. It always lifts my mood and puts a smile on your face - much like yours Harri. In other words it’s timeless classic and has legs. 3 minutes of a rock n roll tsunami. 🇨🇦 🍁

My friend went to school with Jerry, he was a Ladner boy and this song came out when he was young so I imagine he was the boy who wanted rock and roll not the father of the boy. This was a big Canadian hit. I grew up with it and love it as much 45 years later as I did then.

Apparently the story goes that Jerry’s dad was working the graveyard shift and was trying to sleep. Jerry’s mom didn’t want him to wake his dad, so she told him to stop playing so his dad could sleep.
His dad heard her and responded, “Mama, let him play,” and that was it. Jerry wrote the song.
Apparently the song made a splash in Canada and gained some traction in the states, but the record company refused to support it. Apparently the other tracks on the album, while good, were so different that the album lacked a common feel, and American listeners lost interest.
Jerry toured until the last few years before his passing when medical issues prevented it.
I’ve loved the song since it came out.
    RIP Jerry

Definition of road trip song status.
If I’m not mistaken this song was based loosely on a true occurrence of his mother trying to stop him practicing his guitar at home when his father arrived home from a hard days work. His dad would say “Mama let him play”

Another true Canadian classic... if we didn't have a neighbour to the south that had, and has always had, ten times our population then more of the world would have been exposed to great Canadian music. Keep up the good work.
