    If you really feel that it's lacking a lot of power right off idle, I have a good suggestion. I have a 2014 250 XC-W and my father has a 2014 250 XCF-W that I ride from time to time. The first thing I noticed about his bike when hopping on it was it had very little power right off the bottom compared to my bike, and I had a 2012 Honda CRF 250X before my current bike, that didn't have that problem. Curiously, I did some research and found out about playing with fuel maps on the EFI. Later that week, we took it in to our local KTM dealer and had them unlock the EFI, flash the current map and put in a European SX fuel map (Trust me, it's better than it sounds). The next weekend we took it out and boy, that map made the world of difference. Even being a 250 four stoke, you could give it some throttle and the front end would come up, it had completely fixed the power off the bottom end. So, even being different bikes (the 350 XC-F and the 250 XCF-W), it's defiantly something to think about, it made a huge difference. Also, play around with some FMF pipes. Great video too!

    The 350 is a true love/hate bike! I love mine! FMF Core 4.1 full exhaust, rekluse core EXP clutch. I had G-force (Gary Hinkle) do my suspension XV-4 revalve and lowered the rear 15mm internal sweet set up!

    Watched this video before, and after buying a 16' XC350. You are right on in your opinions. I am coming off a YZ295 that is a completely different beast.

    My 15 350xcf came with a rekluse, I still use the bike 99% of the time like it's not there, but sometimes I get out of shape and the rekluse keeps me from stalling 😁
    Bike came with a aftermarket can, but me adding a JD tuner helped bottom too, it's not ktm 500 torque, but almost 450 exc carb torque!
    First thing after riding a 350xc, I said wow to the good useable power, so that's what all the rage is about.

    Did I mention I have a 300 2 stroke?

  • @canton7180
    @canton7180 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    2s makes torque every stroke and a 4s make torque every other stroke, this makes a difference when crawling but this also explain traction issues at times where a 2s will spin the tire and have trouble hooking up, it comes down to the ability to modulate the throttle, the operator is the traction control, you can be lazy on a 4s because torque onset is more linear....my take on the differences

    Your various review videos had a massive influence of my decision to ditch my 300 two stroke to get one of these.
    They are everything you described to the core! Best decision I made, I feel like it actually has more power than my old carb model 300, but delivered in a different way!
    But that slow speed “trialsy” grunt for technical / obstacles that the 300 had is definitely lacking (haven’t stalled it as much as you tho) 😂
    it certainly makes up for it in every other way. thanks for the Great review videos really helpful.

    You need to get the gearing changed on that 350 definitely....You will be amazed by how little gearing adjustment will make the 350 come alive down low, and better suspension than the 300 think you will convert!!!keep them coming tho! Great vids, wish weather here in uk was like yours

    Seems mostly like rider ability. Not being mean.... you seem like more of a novice rider at best.... bikes are much different between rider levels. I did R&D for Yamaha, it is weird getting on different brands and different sizes for sure. 2-stroke verse 4-stroke... is not apples and oranges. They are 2 totally different beast. I grew up racing 2-strokes, 30 years then switched to Honda's 250 and 450F...hated them. Liked the 250F because it was closer to what I was used to. Then when I stopped racing I bought a KTM450 EXC.... loved it. My favorite bike I've ever owned. Looking to get the 2019 350 EXC. Thank you for you honest review, well done.

    Interesting review. I was surprised to see you on a four stroke after your 2-stroke vs 4-stroke video but I enjoyed this perspective. I'm the opposite in that I started with the 450 XC-W and then added the 300 XC two stroke. Such different personalities but both so fun to ride. The four stroke in the "w" is so planted and forgiving with the power making up for rider shortcomings and the 2-stoke XC light, nimble, grunter and yet a explosive fire breather like you said. I agree with the clutch statement. The XC has easier pull, less fatigue and takes more clutch control and the four stroke harder pull but , to me , less need for clutch control.....love your vids keep em coming

      Scott Palmer Thanks for watching. I added a 300 XC to the stable of bikes yesterday and I'm really excited about it. This 350 XC-F is fantastic though. Other than the lack of a kick-starter, it's pretty tough to beat in lots of situations.

    With the 350 and the starting issue! Just bump the starter twice before you go into cranking it over! Works great for mine!

    • @mxracingunlimitedltd7784
      @mxracingunlimitedltd7784 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What do you mean bump? Just hit the estart button for a quick second twice before cranking?
      Maybe this reprimes the fuel pump before trying to crank the bike over and start it. Bc on my Yamaha the fuel pump primes as soon as the key is turned on or if ON already then flipping the engine start/stop switch to the run position. I let it finish out of habit now lol and seems to fire up instantly, alittle quicker than normal.

    How do like the stock 4CS forks?! I have a 2015 KTM 250 xc and I couldn't have hated the stock suspension any more.. It deflected off everything. Rocks, roots, you name it. The initial stroke is so harsh I couldn't take it. I sent my forks and shock to Kreft suspension in texas and dropped $1400 and I love it now, just wish KTM hadn't switched to that fork.. OP in my opinion.

    Ya when you're use to a two stroke a four stroke feels really strange at first. I just got a KX 250 f and at first I wasn't sure if I liked it but the more I ride it the more I can see why people like em. It's a different animal for sure. It's amazing at hill climbing. I climb crazy hills without even trying.

    Dirt Bike Channel - I live in Washington and do most of my riding on trails that are fairly tight, there's not a lot of open area to open a bike up and go fast. I'm currently riding a Honda CRF 230F and want to get a larger bike. I tried someone's WR 250F, but didn't like it all that much, it didn't seem to have that much more power than my 230. I was thinking of getting a KTM 350, but haven't talked to too many people with experience on those bikes. I prefer a 4 stroke. What would you recommend the 350 XCF-W or something else, what's your opinion?

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jason Walker Hi Jason. Thanks for giving all that background. You have it nailed. With all that you mentioned, I think the perfect bike for you to try is the KTM 350 XCF-W. It's the best motor size KTM makes for 4 strokes (my opinion), and the gearing/flywheel weight is suited for tight single track riding.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jason Walker The bike in this review was the XC-F. I think you would need the XCF-W as you suggested.

    Amazing editing and commentary. So..... if you’re doing trails but its mostly fast paced a xc would be a better bike? I’m about to purchase a new bike but you’re making me rethink my choice for the 250 xc-w to the 250 xc.

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave roger Dave, I've ridden both the 250 (XC and the XC-W) a fair amount, one of my riding buds has had both of them for his past 2 bikes. I really like them both. The W will do better in the tight tricky stuff since it's got the heavier flywheel and lower first gear. Second gear on the W is also a fair amount lower than 2nd on the XC (XC has a very tall 2nd gear and they are the exact same gearing on 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th). Don't get me wrong, the W's still go VERY fast. It's just that the front forks tend to be too soft for pounding through the whoops at high speed. For most guys, the W is all they would ever need. Keep in mind that both bikes are off road RACING BIKES. I like like both models so much, I currently own a 300 XC and a 300 XC-W!
      If you think you'll be mostly in the mountains with only some desert mixed in, then do the XC-W. If you will be mostly in the desert with some mountain mixed in, do the XC. Does that help?

    Personally, I love the ride of four strokes but would love to ride and have a KTM 300 or 250. Outside of that for the KTM 350 XCF that you have I would recommend the same things I have added to my 2013 KTM 450 XCF (Love it with these add-ons!) Earth-X Lithium Iron Battery ($165) is absolutely amazing my first recommendation... the second would be to add a FWW like I did to my 450. Made my trails riding much more enjoyable as it does not flame out nearly as much! I got the Steahly 12 oz. FWW. Best money ($130) I have spent on the bike thus far. Next is the muffler (FMF $350)... helps open up and let the bottom end shine in slower grunting ride areas. Just my two cents! Great vids even though you lean to 2-stroke. To each their own :)

    so what is the difference in the xc-f and the exc-f I just bought a 350 exc-f other than being street legal is there a difference so far I love it. I wanted the street legal bike just to get to the trails in my area. I got a great deal on this bike it was a demo bike and had 200 miles on it but I got it for under 8 grand.

  • @zaphodpeters
    @zaphodpeters 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your comment on the clutch, take a look at the clutch specs for the two bikes, you might find that the 350xc-f has a CCS clutch (springs) and the 300xc-w has a DDS clutch (Damped Diaphragm Steel), I have heard that this has a lighter pull.
    I came across this difference when I was comparing 350 xc-f vs the 450 xc-f in 2014, and since the specs for the 2016 300xc-w have not change that much since 2014 (the year a lot of KTM's received DDS clutches, mostly on the enduro side and bigger 4T) one can take a guess that your 300 has that clutch, but you will be able to verify that quicker then I can.

    First of all, excellent quality review. Really well done. I was wondering if you would be willing to list some of the areas that you are riding in this video.
    I myself have a 2015 KTM 300 XC-W Six Days, I am in love with it, but interestingly enough I find the 4CS to be very harsh and I find it hard to get a good rhythm through the deep whoops on the bike without getting bent out of shape quickly.
    Have you found that the linkage with 4CS seems to be a better sorted packaged?

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Fluxx43 I LOVE the 4CS on my bike. Suspension is such an individual thing. What one person hates, another person loves. All of this riding is in Utah, but I don't "give out" my riding areas anymore online. I'm sure you can appreciate why that may be. I feel like finding new areas to ride is a "rite of passage" in a way. Thanks for watching.

    Have you thought about checking out the Beta 300 RR 2-stroke? I think it might be a good comparison to the two in this video. From what I've read and watched people only have good things to say about it, namely the engine. Some have even gone as far as to say it feels like a 4-stroke but with all the advantages of a 2-stroke. Anyway, just thought I'd make a suggestion.

    I like how you mentioned you can pin it and it not turn into a fire breathing dragon. Which in my experience all 450's designed for MX are just that. I wish my 450 had more throttle throw like you said. On my YZ450 it's very short so I can end up whiskey throttling it if i'm not careful or am lazy.

      @Xeil 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dirt Bike Channel I love my 450, but sometimes on rocky, slower trails well.. you
      experienced what I generally feel. It's frustrating to an extreme level.
      It's either go or no, without a rekluse that is. When I had a rekluse
      in my 450 is was a dream machine. I need to get the full package soon
      enough.
      And on another note. I can't speak for other
      manufacturers, but the new yz450's feel very light due to their design,
      but that's at speed. Otherwise it drains on your quickly.

      Gnarlington How do you like the rekluse? Is it worth the money?

      Sam KTM I do like it, I had the basic exp 3.0 which is the one to get. Its a different experience though, but it makes bigger bikes like the 350 and 450 a lot more manageable. However with that being said. You need to utilize every gear until you need to shift so that you don't burn it up. People knock them, but change is hard to accept. I don't think two strokes need them as much as a four stroke does in tight stuff.

      Matt Keras Depends on the temp, but a 162 or with the N4DK needle on the 2nd position will get you close. When it gets warmer, I run a 158 main with an even leaner needle (N4DL) at those elevations and it runs great.

    Dear Kyle, thank you for your excellent and descriptions about the 350! As far as i read in the KTM descriptions, the difference weight of the 250 - 103 kg, 350 - 104 kg and 450 - 106 kg is only 1 kg or 2 kg on the 450 the Six Days models will be about 0.5 kg heavier, without fuel. You said, the 250 is more lighter to handle, but only on the weight (in my opinion it cant be). Therefore what else can it be?

    I'm looking foward to change my bike in 2017. 3 choices: 350XCF, Husky300TX, Husky 300TE. After watching this, the XCF is out of the list! No kickstarter and you did not seem impressed in the tight technical riding( rocky hill climb, etc),what I mostly ride in. My TE250 2015 is amazing, just need more grunt. Good video(even if it's a 2014).

    I really enjoy your reviews man! Keep up the good work! I grew up on XR's in the AZ desert and recently moved to WA State. Single track was a whole new ballgame for me. I also had nightmares when I was a kid as my buddies always liked to make fun of my "funny bike with the lights" so when I moved up to WA I bought a YZ450F and just messed with the gearing a bit to find some bottom end. What a disaster. I hated riding that thing. I am back to the "funny bikes with lights" this time around. I have never owned a 2 Stroke and I have to say...you almost had me convinced! At the end of the day I am buying my first KTM (the only thing funnier than the bike with lights back in the early 90's was a KTM) and have decided to go with the 350 XCF-W. I plan on doing the Rekluse and a GPR damper and getting those YZ450F nightmares to stop. Looking forward to more videos man...keep it up!

      Jayson Grindlinger flaming out is simply lack of clutch control. And the gearing is most likely too tall. Make sure the idle is adjusted high enough, Add 2 teeth on the rear or drop 1 on the front... and control your RPMs better with the clutch and you'll never stall your bike again.

    What fuel ratio do you run at high elevation high temp? I appreciate your quick responses and I love the dirt bike channel!

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Keras Fuel ratio is determined by your premix oil. For instance, if you are running Motorex they suggest 60:1. If you are running Amzoil Saber, they suggest 100:1. Keep in mind that as you increase the amount of oil in your premix, that will lean you overall fuel mixture. Oil mixture and overall carburetor fuel mixture work inversely over each other. Just something to keep in mind.

    Is this model (350xcf /350 xcf w) recommended for a starter?

    • @maxarey4658
      @maxarey4658 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on where you're riding. Trails, enduro, hillclimb, cross country, hare-scramble/single-track. Would all be territory owned by the XC-F... The XCF-W would be recommended for more open riding styles such as gravel roads, roads, long open doubletrack through countries, Rallying over-all. High-speed, rough terrain. the XC-F are both the same bike, but components are entirely different between the two for multiple different scenerios. If you want my recommendation i'd say overall the XC-F is the more preferred bike as it'll help with trails, and will work just fine on rally roads. The XCF-W would work better on rally roads but will not be as good in all the other real off-road situations. The "W" in XCF-W stands for "Wide ratio" meaning a long gear ratio for higher speeds, better control on higher speeds, and slightly longer acceleration.. Whenever it comes to racing a motorcycle. It all sums up to the riders skill, and NOT the bikes capabilities. The bike would help. (suspension, torque, handling.) But that's 15% being done as the other 85% is the riders capabilities to acquire faster speeds .etc .etc. The 350xc-f is the recommended model. by slight. But due to the 85% of speed being done by the rider, it's recommended to hire a trainer if you want to become a faster rider. And look into the trainer, must be someone who knows what the hell they're doing.. Lots of people will hire cheap intermediately talented riders, and will usually end up learning the wrong way compared to learning with someone of HIGH capabilities. Such as a PRO rider. Step #1 Hire a pro rider, talk about a good starter bike. step #2 buy the bike and make the upgrades/changes BASED OFF OF WHAT THE PRO TOLD YOU, if needed any. Step #3 Buy the bike, and train. Add me on Instagram if you would like more info on this subject. @max_arey_

  • @maxarey4658
    @maxarey4658 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It feels like it's got low power because it's made to be that way. It's a hare-scramble bike, they've mapped it (XC MODEL) to be made for woods, You don't need a fun ton of power for woods, that's why 2-strokes lack traction when in the power band, because it's too much power all at once. You need torque, not power. And Torque is what the 350xc-f has to offer. The 350 is a hill climb machine, because it's built for torque. It's practically like riding a rekluse with full clutch control.

As Im coming from 500 exc, I dunno what to expect from a 2 stroke machine, even though everyone praises Beta for a smooth power. Oh man...really dunno what to do:(. Both such sweet bikes and I want the bike to make me happy for another 3-4 yrs...

    • @DirtBikeChannel
      @DirtBikeChannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +michail1963 Either one of those bikes would be good. How old is your 500? What is the reason you want to try something else, is it weight?

    • @michail1963
      @michail1963 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dirt Bike Channel Yes, it is the weight. I can say I already got used to it as I am able to ride it in quite a technical terrain (creek beds, rock beds, jumping over logs etc.), but I am getting exhausted quite fast. I want to learn Graham Jarvis kind of stuff - balancing on a rear wheel, stoppie, trials techniques for hopping on high obstacles etc. I am intimidated to try these techniques on 500 exc, as without technique its too much bike to handle. Thus I want a dirt bike, that will behave like a trials bike, but will be able to keep up with my riding buddies on 450 4 strokes.
      Yesterday I borrowed a Husqvarna FE 350 (2015 model...) for a few hrs...first of all the weight difference was slightly noticeable, yet nothing mind blowing. Secondly I found the engine quite lazy - full throttle on 3rd gear and I had a feeling its accelerating too slow. Is this a normal feeling? If I do full throttle on my 500 (with Two Brothers exhaust) it will either roost or eject me. I already got used to power and overall I felt more confident on 500 exc, but probably thats due to personal setup and being used to the geometry and weight distribution.
      BTW based on that experience I am biased towards a 300 2stroke. Should I be afraid the bike will get me worn out quickly?

    It would be helpful if you would indicate the model year in the title.

      +Chris Collings Didn't want to be too specific, but I see your point. This was a 2014 model.

    You say adding a Rekluse you would not be able to bump start. This is not actually true. The myth persists, but the truth is you can bump start a Rekluse equipped bike. Both cable and hydraulic versions.

    why aren't you a fan of a reckluse clutch?? I thought it would be a good choice for this bike?

      Logan Smith get a Clake one finger clutch and you'll have a ball..Rekluse gets boring VERY quickly.

    Yeah not good for East Coast Woods riding at all, was looking at one but I may end up grabbing a 450. I have a 2 stroke that is built for the Woods.
