    The reason movement becomes "jittery" is because the player's position is stored as a float, where the steps between valid values increace. This is also the cause for the stripelands, because the numbers concerning the blocks get coarse enough to skip blocks

      in java a1.2.6-14w29a excluding b1.0-b1.7.3 its stored as double/D but at 14w30a-14w30b its stored as float/F but then gets stored back to double/D at 14w30c-present
      sometimes the DPE/Double Presicion Errors could be there at float position but wont be as visible as you think since its past 32bit integer limit and chunk overwrite limit and maybe 64 bit limit

    A lot of this probably has to do with the precision of floating point numbers breaking down on the GPU. A 32 bit float has 24 bits of actual data, along with a power which effectively says where to put the point. Once you go beyond 2^24-1 blocks however things get bad.
    TL;DR; The GPU has only a certain number of spots for digits, so as more digits are filled with the world's large position (e.g. 9999 vs 9) it has less space for the little changes (e.g. 0.0005 vs 0.05)
    Now, for the fun technical details. This explanation is simply providing more detail for the above:
    Imagine a base-10 float with 8 digits of precision, akin to the GPU's base-2 floats with 24 bits of precision. If we represent pi we get:
    3 . 1 4 1 5 9 2 6
    What if we represent 10+pi? We get:
    1 3 . 1 4 1 5 9 2
    See how we lost the 6 at the end? We only had 8 digits so we had to get rid of the last one in order to fit the 1 at the start. The number has a floating point, meaning the decimal point can slide around, even past the edge! So we can represent 0.000 000 123 456 78 as:
    . _ _ _ _ _ _ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
    The underscores simply show the "missing" digits on the left. These are implicitly empty, effectively 0.
    Now imagine a game says "draw something at x=10.5". Internally it would be 10.500000, which is great. Now let's see how different world coordinates would be represented on the GPU:
    99.5 = 99.50 0000
    999.5 = 999.5 0000
    9 999.5 = 9999 .5000
    99 999.5 = 9999 9.500
    999 999.5 = 9999 99.50
    9 999 999.5 = 9999 999.5
    99 999 999.5 = 9999 9999. (note we just ran out of room for everything after the decimal. Now every point drawn will be snapped to the nearest whole number)
    999 999 999.5 = 9999 9999 _. (whoops, just lost the 1s place. Now everything will snap to nearest 10 block increment.)
    ... etc.
    You can see, as more of the space is used to hold our massive coordinates less space is left for the GPU to store the little position changes.
    The world starts to shake because while your camera can move in unfathomably small increments due to the nature of the game (along with entities, for reasons I won't get into), the vertices of the world model can now only snap to more and more noticeable increments. Eventually these increments become larger than 1/16th a block, so the cactus faces must snap to the nearest 1/8th of a block. Then the flowers start to succumb to it as their vertices snap to ever increasing increments, and eventually there is so little space for these little sub-block changes that they snap to whole-block boundaries and become perfectly flat.

    I tried to get as close to the 32 bit integer limit as i could in alpha 0.16 (when commands were first added to the game). The teleportation limit was also there at the time. The way to get around it (I’m not sure if it still works) is to use relative coordinates (eg. use tp ~1000000 ~ ~ instead of exact coordinates).
    The further i got, the distance between the stripes in the stripe lands increased. I managed to get to one or two hundred blocks away from the 32 bit integer limit before the game crashed and teleported me back by a few thousand blocks. At that point the stripes were a few hundred blocks away from each other. Also if you go below the sea level your screen would turn blue even if the water blocks aren’t rendering from above.

    • @AZR_81
      @AZR_81 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I did some testing in 1.5 (ios) and the relative coordinates technique doesn’t seem to work. You can still use elytra but the server seems to freeze after a while. Also the lava that generates in caves still generates past the 30 million blocks limit. The bubble columns also generate and ocean mobs spawn normally and move (which is strange because the physics are broken for everything else). I will try it on the win 10 edition tomorrow and see if anything interesting happens.

Minecraft generates worlds in chunks as you explore so space isn't really a problem.

      Just some random guy on the interwebs I think it could be possible to create an infinite or seemingly infinite world. Similar to mine craft and it being procedurally generated but after awhile the space behind you is destroyed until you decide to go back in that direction. Then it will have to procedurally generate again. I know this seems like a loophole and not really a set infinite world, but if we’re just talking a world that keeps generating infinitely as long as you’re walking forward, it could be done.

  • @johnes4882
    @johnes4882 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

    Hey, that jittery stuff towards the beginning of the video reminds me of pannenkoek's video on floats!
    It's likely that the game uses floats to determine the player's position, and since floats become increasingly imprecise as you travel outwards, the player begins to snap from one float position to the next, creating the jittering.
    Or maybe I'm completely wrong, but it bears a striking resemblance to the effect seen in pannenkoek's video.

    • @SerBallister
      @SerBallister 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's right. Large floating point values (e.g. 16 million plus) have less bits to represent small numbers (say the fractional part of the block you're standing in). It's caused by adding a large number (e.g. world position) with a small number (e.g. how far you travelled in 1 frame) which causes the small number to be rounded down, hence the jitter. There are some clever number tricks to get around these limits at least for movement, it's not easy to fix for the world generator though.

    Well I know I'm like 2 years later but I want to leave my experiment to anyone who wants to know.
    Months ago I downloaded the minecraft pocket edition again, and as I was more aware (last time I played it I was a child), I opened a creative world to test command blocks, and for some reason the WorldBorder command did not exist, I went searching and I discovered that there was far lands in version 1.16 of cell phone, which made me curious, I found a value and didn’t research anything else, I wanted to test it soon. Opening a normal world and using the following command:
    / tp @s 12550800 60 0
    Explaining further: Far lands starts at Z 12550800, I know it has the far lands corner, where the far lands connects to another.
    But my minecraft had a normal FPS change, like generating many Chunks at a time, so I managed to get past it. (Remember that what makes it impossible to reach far lands in survival are: - Failure of your movement to freeze in Position Z. - Blocks out of certain millions are collision free.) And then I explored it in depth, well the far lands are big, deep but not infinite, I think I saw it end in 15 million or 17, but the fact is that after that we only have water and strange structures, like flying trees, villages without any npc, or with frozen npcs. and 30 million (Actually it never reaches that amount, it’s 29 million and a large amount of numbers nine, it’s like in the previous video you saw, but the water divided into cubes is in the corners, where I was it was divided by lines of water blocks that were stretched, larger than conventional blocks, this influenced the texture and the bedrock as well. I did it in the Nether, it's the same thing but there is lava replacing the role of water, and the far lands mix with the islands of the nether, getting even beautiful. At the End, no naturally generated liquids, so there is only void, no far lands, no corrupted water. In Flat World, something quite strange happens, there are no far lands, but in the 30 million there is grass instead of water, like stretched grass blocks divided into strips between grass and void. I know a lot about programming, but if anyone who knows java / c++ enough to be able to explain a little about this phenomenon, be willing would like an answer.

    in modern mcpe, the exact same thing happens. i once conducted an experiment at school, and i also:
    -fell through the floor
    -saw the stripelands
    -tp limit
    -corner far lands madness
    but at the time, i didnt know of elytras. i couldve discovered something extraordinary, but i guess ill just have to leave it all to Ant.

    the reason many of those happen is because your position is a float so it becomes less precise as it becomes higher
    you can't move while sneaking past a certain point because your speed isn't actually enough to get to the next line you can move on - your next position along that axis rounds to your current position along that axis, so you don't move

    Minecraft should still have the farlands implemented at the world border. There’s something oddly beautiful looking at an enormous monolithic wall that stretches on forever in each direction past the threshold with nonsensical generation and repeating patterns. The further out you go they could deteriorate, and eventually nothing would be left besides the world border. Past that, nothing would generate at all; it would just be void. Or maybe it can loop around to the other side of the Minecraft world, who knows.

I can fall through the world and when i placed blocks their length multiplies.

    i have a few stories to tell that are a little related to the video ( i included time stamps) ik no one cares but anyways
    Story 1: 1:54 ok so me and my cousin have a bedrock edition world and we decided to build a town 132,000 blocks out from spawn. I noticed the jittering effects and was like "is this normal? Is my world broken?" now i know im just too far away from spawn.
    Story 2: me, the same cousin from story 1, and our online friend were doing a build battle and my online friends brother decides to blow up our houses with TNT. these houses were mansions and almost took 2 hours to make. we didnt want to re-build them, so i teleported all of us to a random number and we actually ended up in the stripe lands! my online friend was actually kinda scared. she thought our world had broken and corrupted. but once i teleported all of us out of there, she was relieved.
    ik the second story is so much longer than the 1st but idc

    I figured out that in PS4 Edition the ground becomes unwalkable around 8000000 (you go through the ground) and around 12000000 it becomes straight ocean to bedrock. It may look like the end then, but if you travel to around 150000000 the ocean becomes striped and glitched, aka the Stripedlands. (So yes, the Stripedlands do exist in PS4.) Around 250000000 the ocean starts looking like abunch of glitched ocean blocks and stuff. Plus, "Infinite World's" aren't infinite, as I said, land ends at around 12000000, and if you travel too 300000000 there's an invisible boarder, and you can't teleport past that point. Plus, I figured out that you can teleport 300000000 blocks up you technically end up in space. (Just looks like sky.) And if you teleport too -300000000 you end up in the Void and start heading downward. (And yes, you pass the Void's invisible barrier at -40). Phew. Sorry for all that talking. Informative though.

      Thank you for your research good buddy. I have PS4 as well but I also play Switch. The Farlands appear on Switch (12million something) and the Stripelands 16million something. The Farlands are also in the Nether (really cool looking!). I'll have to experiment further out and in the End for Switch and experiment with y and negative coords for both platforms. I've already done some negative coord exploring but hearing you talk about your experiences made me want to explore more!

    I checked and I'm pretty sure that with the advent of part 1 of the Caves and Cliffs update on mobile, at least for the iPad, the farlands no longer show up, they've been removed, and this saddens me. But at least I got to see them in my game before they were removed thanks to someone in a different one of Ant's videos pointing out the fact that the farlands were still in Bedrock Edition.
