This video is EXCELLENT! I was a school teacher, now retired. I had a cord that gave me 120 and 120 but not 240. I now have the confidence to check the outlet, then fuse if needed. Top quality teacher!!
I never thought it would be the plug because the dryer was running. You saved me from buying a new dryer. I have watched many videos to figure out why dryer would not heat. I replaced all of the heat sensors and the old ones all tested good. The heater coil was burnt up so that needed replaced but still would not heat after replacing with a new one. I tested the cord and the outlet as you have shown. It turns out the cord was not completely inserted into the outlet. Thanks for making my day a little better.
This video is exactly what I needed because I’m far from an electrical genius. I spent hours looking at the inside of the dryer, thinking it might be the circuit breaker in my house, etc. It ended up being the cord! New one on order now. Thank you so much!
Hey Bill - just used your video today to work through a power problem with my Samsung dryer. I had already replaced thermostats, thermistor. Heating element replaced last year. But, I had no power to the machine to start up. Used my analog meter and followed your instructions for my 3 prong plug. 120 (for the hot side touching the grounded) 240 (two hot sides together). I wasn't getting to that 240. First I changed the power cord itself. Still had the problem. Cut the circuit breaker and pulled the outlet from the wall. There it was a singed, melted connection from who knows when. It had gone form intermittent to not working. I replaced the outlet. Rechecked the connections as per your video and I'm up and running again. Saved me from buying a new Control Panel for upwards of $150 as a shot in the dark last ditch effort to get the dryer running again. Thanks for the thorough explanation.
You are awesome- at the 5:44 minute point I realized it was actually the electrical outlet, not the dryer. It appears the ground and neutral are switched, on the actual outlet. The dryer's not even broken. Call into electrician. This video saved me wasted money and time waiting for an appliance person to tell me it was the outlet.
Praising god for you brother! Just moved my family into a new home yesterday and the breaker went out overnight. Saved us all a lot of headache and wallet ache.
Thanks Bill, you just saved me from buying a new dryer, and I'm the hero of the day to the family. YOU are my hero. Easy fix, the belt jumped off that idler pulley and activated broken belt switch.
Thank you! We just had an appliance delivery and was told the outlet was bad, and we needed to bring in an electrician. I got the multimeter out, tested great, plugged in the dryer, and realized they probably just thought the display came on automatically. They just needed to turn on the power. I learned something new today!
I've been working on my dryer for 3 months! You just solved the problem with this video. I was watching crap for hours. Thank you! I had 40 volts on one side of my outlet.
Your last saying was a bad motor on the dryer🤦♂️. I thought breaker was bad I replaced it yes it was old. Plugged dryer in and pop goes the breaker again. I checked heating element with meter all good. Now I’m going to go back and check motor after watching this video 🙏💯
Thank you so much! This helped me find out that one of the copper wires wasn’t connected to the outlet and now I get 240v and heat to my dryer!!! Thank you, thank you, a million times thank you!
You have done it again, I was on my way out to buy some rope to make a clothes line so that I can hang my clothes and dry them but after looking at your video I fixed the problem with my clothes dryer, it was a loose connection in the power wire coming from the breaker great video thank you very much blessings to you. 👋😇😂🤩
Thanks Bill ... I learned a lot in how to check the whole line of power down to the breaker box and found out it was the four-prong outlet line connections were loose ... took a simple screw driver it was back up and running ... again thanks for you thoroughness!
Just found your video and it is exactly what I needed. I had never trouble shot a 220V socket , but I also needed to eliminate the dryer as a possible failure point. Thanks a bunch. I am heading over to our daughters house with my trusty FLUKE 117.
Sorry to see you dont make new video's anymore! This video saved me $$ by allowing me to diagnose that the wall receptacle somehow had a wire disconnected when my old dryer died! New samsung dryer wasn't heating, it was only tumbling. Thank you very much Bill!
Thank you! Wish I watched this first. After replacing every part on my Samsung dryer and still no heat your video led me right to the issue. A loose cover box on my 240 outlet. Heat is rolling 👍🏼
Just wanted to take a sec and say thank u bigg time . I changed out the heating element. Thermostats etc... put it all back together and still no heat . Was ready to make the dryer into a toaster or somthing. Came across your video follwed your steps . And traced all the way to the breaker panel (which was good) went back to outlet plug because cord checked out and came to find out the out let was bad in process of taking it out hot wire just fell off wasnt even screwed down tight , but dryer can dry up a small pond now ! Thx again keep your videos coming take care .
Awesome video. I really need to check out why my dryer is not heating up and I was not confident to test all the voltages before watching this tutorial!
This video saved my ass! Brand new dryer wasn’t heating, so I ran through my basics from my one-time apprenticeship (so I had what I needed) and was super ready to blame Home Depot and GE, but turned out the previous owners didn’t have the red wired into the double breaker. Thanks!
You just saved me so much time! I was going through trying to find the problem on the dryer and it turns out I had a bad breaker! Thanks for the video!
Thank you! Found the issue behind my plug. Homewarrenty started changing parts, I decided to fix it myself after three weeks of back and forth with them. Got myself a multimeter fixed it in ten minutes. 👌
Wanted to write to say thanks so much for this video, it's still helping people even to this day! I was way too scared to use a multimeter to test until I saw this. I was able to determine the problem I had - it was weird since the dryer would work for a bit then it would stop/turn off. Then I would have to reset the breaker and it would work again for a little bit. I was getting the voltage from the socket and at the breaker, but noticed that the signal was intermittent at one of the hot wires on the socket, turned out one wire was not screwed in properly so it seems it had loosened up over time and wasn't solidly connecting. After screwing that wire back in it's working again with no issues!
Just fixed my dryer watching your videos! Thank you Mr. Newberry for taking the time to post. I was only getting 120 into the dryer... checked all the way back and found one of the connections was loose in the wall plug. Thanks again.
@BillNewberry Hi Bill, I have an issue with my dryer. I sent my dryer internationally where the voltage is 240v. Hence, I am using a step down transformer to set the dryer up. However, I noticed that there is 110v in both hot wires individually, however when I check the two live wires together instead of 240v it's giving me 0v. Hence the dryer starts up doesn't heat. What can I do?
you have to check for power from outlet to drier,,i had a vogues power reading the first time i checked i had from right to center 120 v from left to center 120 v from right to left 220 v so i was puzzled,, all of my thermal fuses had continuity,, i gave up that day,, next day i came across this video, and checked again the current from my outlet to my drier this time i was just getting 120 volts all across, so i new this time that i had a faulty breaker,,checked it and all it was coming out from it was 120v, replaced it and bingo my drier came alive, folks take your time and do what i did and you will revive you're drier,, thanks!! Bill Newberry
Thank you! You are a blessing to us, TH-cam do it myself'ers! I had just about given up and almost called in the electrician. Took a break and found your video! I appreciate the detailed manner in which you eliminated things! Again, I can't thank you enough for taking time to walk rookies through repairs that saves several hundred dollars!
Great videos. These have been a huge help for me. Tomorrow I'm going to check the voltage on my dryer. Everything checks out but it still won't heat. Hoping these voltage tests will get me to the root of the problem.
Thanks so much I watched your video followed through all the steps the problem was in my breaker now my dryer is back working my wife thanks you as well. 💪💪💪
Bill, thanks for giving my wife an overview of trouble shooting our dryer. She say I can build the world with my business but can't turn a screw at home. By chance would you be an IBEW member? The reason why is the screws on all your wall plates. I started doing this back in the early eighties working on nuclear power plants. All the slots had to be in the vertical position so radioactive material will not settle in the slots. I think it looks good and as such shows me you are a top shelf skilled craftsman. Thanks again and God bless.
Thank you so much for the walk thru, my dryer stopped heating up & I was all ready to spend hundreds on a new dryer, but after watching all your videos, I bought a multimeter and started my troubleshooting with the power supply. I was only getting a reading on one side, followed it back to my breaker box, and it turned out to be a bad fuse. My dryer works as good as ever!!
I worked on a dryer that was not working at all, did everything you did except for the breaker part found out the red wire on the outlet wasn't spliced far enough and wasn't making a good connection to the outlet problem solved saved me a step 😎
Thanks you very much Bill; you save me from disassembling my dryer. I was one of the two fuses was blown. Replaced it and the heading in the dryer start work.
Thank you for this and your other videos. I was able to trace my issue to a lose wire in the circuit breaker which was installed 7 years ago. I didn't know that could be a thing.
Man I spent most of today trying to figure out what was wrong with my dryer, and your video saved the day for me, ended up having a blown circuit in my breaker box. Thanks!
Thank you 🙏🏽 you are a life saver I don’t know 🤷🏽♂️ how to fix nothing in my home and you helped me so much appreciate you sir. New Subscriber from Myrtle Beach South Carolina

Thanks Bill. It was explained really well. I was frustrated with virtual technicians where they couldn’t even figured what was wrong with dryer so I was ready to hire local technician. Before I hire anyone I found this video and found it wasn’t receiving correct amps on wall plug. Changed wall plug and dryer is running fine. It was very helpful. Thanks again

Bill, you are brilliant! Thank you! Had a dryer that would spin, no heat and the timer wouldn't move. Thought it was toast. Checked the circuits and only 1 leg had power so the dryer was only getting 120v. Turns out the breaker in the box had a bad contact. Off/On/Off/On and we're back in business. Wonder if I should replace that breaker? Outside panel in SW FLA. Thx again!!!!!!
I'm getting 123 and 118 (I got around 242 total) and I'm having my samsung dryer buck a few times and shut off after about a minute. When it dies that it also trips my stove somehow and the stove timer is reset to blinking 12:00. The circuit breaker never trips for either the dryer or the stove. They are on separate breakers. Is the 123 and 118 thing a possible issue?
Thank you, I just got a meter so now I can see what's wrong with my dryer. It's been outta commission 2 months now... Omg, the circuit breaker was bad.
Thanks Bill i found your channel trying to find out why my fridge does a extra long defrost cycle (to the point that i have icicles hanging from the roof) and have been a sub ever since keep up the good work cant wait till the next vid....
About the long intervals before it defrost, it could be a defective timer or ADT, and about the icicles: room temperature air is going in the fridge, there is a gap in the door seal somewhere
Door gap will cause that, also on some model of refrigerators if they are tilted too far forward some defrost water will seep into the liner and freeze between the fridge and freezer compartment. Give it all a look. Thanks for Watching!
Excellent tutorial and as a new home owner, shows why you need a multi-meter as a key part of your tools. Can you run a washer or dryer rated for 240v in a 220v outlet?
Awesome video, you sir helped me solve my problem and saved me from having to call in somebody. Prolly saved me quite a bit of money. Thanks a bunch, god bless for sharing your wisdom with others.. Much appreciated
Thank-You Bill, I checked my receptacle and wasn't getting the requisite 240V and so it turned out that there was a bad contact in my fuse panel. I have two 30A glass screw-in fuses and it has the Taylor 15/30 AMP, 120/240 VOLT Twin Plug-in fuse head pull-out. The metal prongs on this Taylor wasn't making proper contact on the left side (so only one of the 30A fuses was getting really hot and making a clicking noise) and so I bent the metal prong inward a tad and now seems to be fine. Hopefully, it will stay like this.
This video is incredibly informative!!! Wow! I do have one question. When you tested the first thjng behind the dryer plate is the plug supposed to be inserted to the socket with power or unplugged? I dont want to assume so i wanted to ask.
Bill, what if you have 240 at plug, but only 240 on right terminal of dryer and 8 left terminal. I took wires loose from terminal block and lay flat on floor and check ends and have 120 and 120, with 249 across... I have never seen this before. Its on a maytag dryer that won't power up,
This video is EXCELLENT! I was a school teacher, now retired. I had a cord that gave me 120 and 120 but not 240. I now have the confidence to check the outlet, then fuse if needed. Top quality teacher!!

🤣😂😅🤣😆
Breaker was tripped but not all the way so I didn't notice it. Thanks for walking me through the troubleshooting process!
Easy to follow videos. Thanks for making them.
Went through the process just to find 1/2 the breaker was tripped.
Did you figure out what caused it to trip? Did it occur anymore?
Thank you so much for the walk thru, my dryer stopped heating up & I was all ready to spend hundreds on a new dryer, but after watching all your videos, I bought a multimeter and started my troubleshooting with the power supply. I was only getting a reading on one side, followed it back to my breaker box, and it turned out to be a bad fuse. My dryer works as good as ever!!

This video was a huge help! I was able to track down a loose wire in my fuse box because of it. Thanks!!!!
This was very helpful. I had two 120’s but the two bottom were only reading 15 and not the 240. Thanks
Thanks! This helped me determine that my outlet is wired wrong and my dryer is (likely) fine. Big help!
Man I spent most of today trying to figure out what was wrong with my dryer, and your video saved the day for me, ended up having a blown circuit in my breaker box. Thanks!
Thanks Bill for all your professional advice
Thank you so much for the informative video. I was able to get my dryer up and running again.
The best troubleshooting ever from this guy ... awsome!!
Thank you 🙏🏽 you are a life saver I don’t know 🤷🏽♂️ how to fix nothing in my home and you helped me so much appreciate you sir. New Subscriber from Myrtle Beach South Carolina
thank you !! you are the only video that really explain and nicely explaine how to find what is wrong !! and i did find what was wrong with my dryer !! so thank to you !!!
+Robert Malo You are very welcome! Thanks for the great comment!
Thank you this is the 1st video I watched and the only one I needed to watch! I was able to determine my 6 week old LG dryer has a problem. I don't know why it kept not just blowing my breaker but it fried it 3 times! The warranty people and or Home Depot can figure that out. Thanks again!
Thank you so very much for this fantastic Video! At a time (2018) when these appliances have shot up in price like a used car, I am very grateful for this! God Bless you! Carlos
This was exactly what I needed to diagnosis my dryer with no power to the controls. Thank you Bill.
Thanks again
the best video and explanation style i've seen in awhile. excellent work. thank you
You have been such a great help to me. Thank you so much. The 2 hot and neutral on the dryer with the multi meter test 120, but the 2 hots test zero and should be 240V. Going to test the breaker tomorrow. I never thought a breaker could go bad!. I'll let you know my results. Thanks again.
I have the same problem, what ended up being your issue? Did you solve it?
Thank you for posting this video! It helped me big time
Great video. Thank you very much. I was only reading 120 on the red cable, nothing on the black. The problem was with one of the the breakers but I had no idea how to troubleshoot the entire process. Thanks again
Best TH-cam video ever.
I literally was going crazy trying to figure out why my dryer wouldn't heat up. I actually went out and bought a new dryer, feel pretty silly now.. It was the breaker that was broken I didn't think to check it because the dryer still spun. Just want to say thank you very much for this very informative video it was very helpful.
When you say it was the breaker,,the one that’s attached to the house or is there one on the machine?
Thank you. You saved me a whole bunch of money with your video
Thanks Bill! I read on another of your videos that you had passed. Thanks anyway!
Very helpful video! Was able to quickly find the problem and get my dryer running!
This is an awesome video! I wish you are able to answer some of the questions for the newbies.
Awesome vid/tutorial, great job solved my problemin in 20 minute. Happy New Year
Glad I found this. I was able to determine my cord was bad. Now I have to figure out what happened.
Thanks. Very handy, but electrical is my one weakness. Solid, easy to follow instructions.
I'm getting 123 and 118 (I got around 242 total) and I'm having my samsung dryer buck a few times and shut off after about a minute. I like how the screws on your outlets are all the same direction . Usually only
other electricians notice things like that ... just looks neater .
Funny as I was watching the video I thought I was the only person who noticed that!
People that just tighten them without making them up and down drive me insane.
Thank you for this video, still relevant 2020!!! Great presentation
Thank you, I just got a meter so now I can see what's wrong with my dryer. It's been outta commission 2 months now... Omg, the circuit breaker was bad.

+mjb Mjb Thanks!
Awesome! This video helped me out a lot! Saved me tons of money!
Excellent Video. Thank you!
I wasted whole day with the samsung rep and her direction. Then this video solved my problem. It was a circuit breaker issue!!
I found this incredibly helpful. Thank you
Great video! You make it very easy to understand.
Thank you, Bill. My family and I can finally dry our clothes in peace.
Great explanation. Very thorough. Thanks!
Thank you so much and teaching me on this video.
Thanks for the concepts you have discussed here.
Just bought a Southwire Pro multimeter I luv it. It has TrueRMS an Low-Z, auto functions, Backlight an it's ip67 waterproof and dust proof
This is so informative! Thank youuuu 🙏🏾
Its on a maytag dryer that won't power up,
You were very clear and concise thank you.
Thank you a million times. Just what I was looking for!!!
Great video! Thanks for posting.
That was a very good video clean and clear.
Inside the three wire receptacle. The neutral and ground are connected together?
Green ground should go to the metal box?
