- If your dryer is not heating then you should test the thermal fuse (thermal cutoff) for continuity to see if it is good or bad. This free video shows step by step instructions on how to test your dryers thermal fuse using a multimeter.

The thermal fuse (also called a thermal cutoff) on a dryer is a safety that will blow if the dryer has overheated. When the fuse blows it can cause the dryer to run but not heat, or to not run at all. Visually you cannot tell if the fuse is blown and you will need to use a multimeter or ohm meter to do a continuity test to see if the fuse is good or bad. If you have a bad thermal fuse, make sure address why the dryer was overheating. Most commonly the fuse will blow if there is an airflow restriction (clogged venting, lint buildup inside the dryer, ect), but it can also be caused by a shorted heating element, bad control board, and more.

Thanks for the video.. would have never guessed this is a thermal fuse that actually blows as opposed to something that just opens and closes again when it cools down, or just a thermister for the control box to read a specific value...
They do it that way because they want the person repairing the dryer to also address the overheating issue at the same time the fuse is being replaced.
@@PartsDr Interesting.. I guess that makes sense.. Compared to the cost of the service call, the fuse is minimal, but it makes you take it seriously enough not to ignore it.

can these be tested in place without removing the wires? some of them are quite difficult to remove and i dont want to break anything.
You will need to disconnect the wires to get an accurate reading.
Set to OHMS my multimeter read 0.6 when I tested my thermal fuse the reading jumped around a bit at first..when I had a steadier connection to the fuse it read 0.6 so I am assuming it's good. My dryer was cleaned the summer so lint buildup wouldn't be a cause to my problem - which is the start button only clicking. I also checked the door switch and is good as well.

I can't test mine GE newer models have sides holding back on. Door switch is soft touch plastic.

Can these fuses blow if an object gets caught in the fan (thing that spins with the motor)? A pen got stuck in the fan and I’m trying to figure out what happened
Yes if the airflow stops, it can cause a thermal fuse to blow.

I need help. I have been working on my dryer for 4 days now. I have replaced the fuse checked all the thermostat replaced the heating element 3 times. They all show good. I have checked and cleaned out the lint ran a vent cleaner from my dryer to the out side of my house. Checked my mother board and I am getting 240 volts going to the heating element.
My dryer was giving me the HE error but now it runs 2 cycles with no problem than just won’t heat anymore. I am lost and very frustrated on where to look next to try to fix this issue. Can you help me please.
I have a Maytag maxima..it has power to it, lights on,, but won't start..I checked the thermal fuse.it reads 0.3 so i think it's ok...checked the door. all good..what else would make it not startup? I do think it overheated on the last load

Please correct me if I am wrong, but one of the parts you tested( the Thermister), needs an ohm test in order to confirm if it is good. Continuity alone isn't doesn't mean it is a good part.
Hi Kevin, all of the parts in this video are thermal fuses. But if you are testing a thermistor you will need to do an ohm test that is specific to the thermister you are replacing. Each thermistor can have a different ohm value, so you will need to look up the one you are replacing. We do have a few videos showing how to test some of the more common dryer thermistors.

I've disassembled my GE dryer and removed the Inlet Control Thermistor (part WE4M398) after testing for continuity and not receiving an audible alert. So I ordered another one. The new one came in today from you guys but the new one doesn't have an audible notification either when testing for continuity.
I reread some online resources to make sure of the proper test I should be performing: Omhs or Continuity. But I just got more confused.
Should I be testing for Continuity or Omhs on this part? If my thought process is correct, there should be some type of resistance if the part is designed as a fail safe for high/low temps. Thoughts?
The part number that you mentioned will not register continuity. It will have to be tested for ohms. This thermistor should have an ohm reading of approximately 100K ohms at room temperature and the resistance value should decrease as the temperature increases.
How many ohms must a good heating element give me on tumbel dryer?

@@oopalonga The cycling thermostat controls the temperature of the dryer. The larger outer terminals should have continuity at room temperature and the inner smaller terminals are an internal thermostat heater which have a higher resistance that won't register continuity on most multimeters. Just because the thermostat has continuity at room temperature doesn't mean that it is regulating the temperature of the dryer correctly. If you suspect it to be bad, it is a good idea to just replace it. We wouldn't recommend that cheap Amazon knock off, you can get the real OEM part here: partsdr.com/part/3387134-cycling-thermostat

My base line shows 0.17 ohms and on my Klixon CDM-2A it reads 1.17 ohms. What is tolerance for the discrepancy I see between base line and fuse?

What if the elements all have a continuity tone, but the dryer still continues to overheat and repeatedly blow the new Thermal Fuse?

My dryer is giving me f4 e3 but it is not clogged I took it all apart can it be the thermal fuse ? It was working just fine heating up fine went to switch the loads but now won’t start but has power panel board does work
Yes it could be a blown thermal fuse, but also make sure to check your dryer for restricted exhaust venting.

My fuse shows continuity when touching the surrounding bracket but not with the terminals
It sounds like a bad fuse from what you described.
What if it's screeching but the meter says 0? It seems like everything I try to do falls through the cracks making it even more confusing
That sounds like it is beeping to indicate continuity.
I just replaced the thermal fuse and after a minute of running the fuse has gone out again!!! I have checked all other fuses and element. Lint trap and blower is clear. What else could be causing this?

Quick question my dryer is blowing cold air I did the ohms test on all the elements I did the ohm test on the heating coil and I got nine ohms is that okay but I'm definitely going to check that littelfuse you have up in the right-hand corner thank you

what's happen if the ohm reading 10.5 ohm is higher than the ohm base fuse 1.2 ohm? Does this mean it is discontinuity? Can I use this troubleshoot application for other component of dryer?

Do I need to completely remove any fuses before testing them or can I just disconnect the wiring and test the fuses while still attached to the dryer? I have multiple fuses to check. Push to start switch, interlock switch, thermal fuse etc.
Great question! You can leave the fuses in the dryer, but you will need to make sure the power to the dryer is unplugged or disconnected and also make sure the wires are disconnected to the fuse(s) when testing them.

So you don't have to remove each thermal fuse to check them? They can be checked while still in the unit, correct?? It'll save a few minutes but was questioning whether or not to take them out first. Thank you
@@jessicam5226 You can leave them in the unit while checking them. Just make sure the power is disconnected to the dryer and the wires to the fuse are disconnected while testing.

Would the thermostat be the issue if the dryer sometimes heats up? Initially, my gas dryer stopped heating and I found out that usually it is the thermal fuse so I replaced it. Worked great... for a week and then it stopped heating. Did a few cycles and no heat. I thought the fuse burnt out again. Then all of a sudden we tried the dryer and it is heating again. What could cause the dryer to sometimes heat and other times not?
Intermittent heating issues on gas dryers are most often caused by bad gas coils. partsdr.com/appliance-type/dryer-parts/gas-coil-parts/
OK, I tested the gas coils with a multimeter and it was fine (showed continuity). Is that really reliable or should they be changed anyway? I also tested the thermal fuse and thermostat with the multimeter and they were also fine.
A continuity test is not very accurate when the dryer is having intermittent heating issues. Normally the gas coils will test fine while not under load and fail while under load. If you suspect they might be bad it would be a good idea to try replacing them as they are not very expensive to replace on most gas dryers.

Can you test the thermal fuse without removing it or will that give a false reading? I have the Thermal Fuse and the Thermostat both for continuiuty and the thermal coils are good. The vest is cleaned and the blower wheel has been cleaned. I reset the LG with power off by pushing the start and pause button for 5 seconds and I still don't have heat. ANY HOPE? I'm frustrated!
Hi Mike, the power should be disconnected and the wires should be removed from the fuse when performing the continuity test.

I have an Admiral gas dryer ADG7005AWW that stopped heating when drying. I replaced the ignitor which was not working anymore. Now when I run the dryer, it heats only as much as it might for delicates. I haven't checked yet, but do you think it might be the high limit thermal fuse? I haven't tested it yet since I have to remove the front panel and drum to get to it. Thanks for your help! Your videos are super informative!!

Hi Ken, first check that you have 220-240v power supply to the dryer. If the power supply is good, and all of the fuses, element, and thermostats are good, then you may have a bad main control board or motor.

Is it possible for a thermal fuse on a regular older "nothing fancy" amana electric dryer to be bad and cause the dryer to not run at all? I see a lot of people saying they have no heat with their bad fuse, implying that the motor is still turning or they are at least getting something when they run it. Im not getting anything at all from my dryer. The vent had a bunch of garbage in it, I unclogged it, tested the start switch, it was good, tested a fuse that looks exactly like the bad one in your video, mine has no continuity. If I replace it will I be good, or is their something else wrong with my dryer as well? Very helpful video, thank you.
Hi Brandon, we have seen on some model dryers that the manufacture wires the thermal fuse in a way that it stops the dryer from running when the fuses blows. If you test your thermal fuse and it is bad then it would be a good idea to start by replacing that and see if that fixes your problem. Also, make sure to check to see why the dryer overheated to begin with so you don't blow another fuse.
Thank you for your reply. Ya mine must be one of those dryers, I replaced the fuse and shes back to work. I am hoping it was the clogged dryer vent, but honestly, it might not be, the stuff I pulled out of the vent wasn't lint, but small rocks or other solid material, it couldn't have clogged the vent more then 20%. I could have pulled lint out as well though, and the combonation of the 2 could have easily blocked it. Not sure if I pulled out lint because when I went to clean it I had a hard time reaching, so I just stuck a shop vac wand down it as far as I could, swirled it around a little bit till I didn't hear anymore rocks coming out. @@brandonmanson8866 We are happy to hear that the fuse got the dryer up and running again. If the fuse blows again you may have to do some more investigation to find the source of the dryer overheating.
The blades on my replacement thermal fuse are too large (1/4") and don't fit into the female leads on the wires running to it (3/16").
The wires are hard to reach to modify the female leads. Any ideas? Do they sell adapters to connect these two ends?
It sounds like you may have the wrong thermal fuse. The wire terminals should match up and be the same size if you have the correct fuse.

I ended up using a "MA02906-1 .25" 2 Male x 1 Female Connector and Adapter Terminal". I trimmed down one of the 1/4" male leads so it would fit into the smaller female connector that was on the end of the wire running to the fuse.

@@SuperFishbreeder If you do that, make sure you use wire that can handle the current or you're going to start a fire. For as cheap as the right part is, I wouldn't be making homemade adapters for these things!

At first, I have a thermal fuse without continuity. I ordered one and put it on and it works for 5 minutes and afterward it was blown. The lint trap and the vent line was c;ear. What else can be wrong, there are couples of thermistor and fuse nearby the blower, beside using the ohm to test that thermistor, can I use continuity (beeping)?
+Tim Horton No, you cannot test the thermistor for continuity. You must test them by doing an ohm test and it should have a specific ohm value at a certain temperature. If the venting is clear and the fuse is still blowing then we would recommend to check for a shorted heating element or a control board that is constantly sending power to the heating element (if your dryer has a control board). If your dryer has an Air Dry (no heat) cycle try running the dryer on that cycle to test to see if the dryer still produces heat on this cycle. If it does, then that is a good indication that you either have a shorted heating element or a bad control board.

man, I checked every part and wire in my dryer, all have continuity. but it still won't heat. the continuity reading on my heating element is 10.2-11.2 while everything else is 0.2-0.5. does that mean the element is bad?? it doesn't have any breaks in the springs..
That is a normal ohm reading for a dryer heating element. The heating element has a higher ohm value than the fuses and thermostats, so that is normal. Also see the link below for our video on testing the heating element.

Parts Dr. I have a Whirlpool gas dryer with the thermal fuse shown in the video(top right). Tested it with digital multi meter and the meter didn't change. It's bad. But, the dryer gets hot and drys the clothes. Apparently I have a bad motor too. When the start button is pushed you get a hum for 1 second then it seems to work OK. Other times the hum is 7-8 seconds(no tumble) then it shuts off. 2 times the dryer shut off halfway through the cycle. Why would the dryer still get hot if the fuse is bad?
If that fuse is bad, the dryer either shouldn't run or if it does run it shouldn't heat. It sounds like you might not be testing the fuse correctly.
Somtimes we also see people confuse the Thermistor as a Thermal Fuse. Make sure you aren't doing that.
According to your video it's the thermal fuse. When this video starts it shows 4 fuses. Mine is the one on the top right(long white one with 2 terminals). With a digital multi-meter and the setting on either 200 or 2000 ohms(resistance) the meter reads 1. When touching the 2 probes to the terminals the meter doesn't change.

Most digital multimeters $20 on up will have a function to check for continuity. Just check the features of the multimeter before you purchase one. Since this is what we do every day we do like to have nice tools since we are using them frequently, but it is not a requirement for the average home owner.
