Quick question if your still there, I have not continuity through my inlet control thermister on a GE electric dryer. It operates fine until you go to start a cycle in which case it will just never start. Also in the diagnostic test of the drum it will not rotate. Is this likely the thermister causing a fault that will not allow the drum to turn? Like if yes, down vote for no

I tore down and repaired our dryer today using info from your excellent tutorial. After checking things, I found a spade connector from the heater coil to the thermostat had come loose from the wire and burned some of the insulation off. I replaced the connector with a new one and after a test run everything seems to be working fine again. Without watching the video, I would have just guessed and bought a heater coil thus wasting money. Thanks for helping us learn!

This is the most comprehensive repair/troubleshooting tutorial I have found in my search for solutions to repair my family's dryer. We have a Whirlpool Estate manufactured with a three-prong power cord. We had to replace the three-prong with a four-prong cord after we moved to our current address three years ago. We've owned the dryer for about 11 years now; it's simple and sturdy so we'd like to keep it as long as possible. Recently, it wouldn't completely dry a load without two to three runs. It had been awhile since I last opened up the housing to clean it so I decided to complete this task first before checking any of the electrical components. The instant I turned it on after closing it there was a flash and an audible pop behind the panel covering the power cord terminal. When I reopened this portion, I discovered the black cord melted and separated beneath the spade connector. This is not the first time I have opened our dryer to clean it so I am lost as to what and how this happened. Your thoughts on what happened (including if it may have been something I did while cleaning it) and what I can do to fix it (if possible) would be greatly appreciated. Again, thank you for the fantastic tutorial; I will be checking out your other videos.

Since my Whirlpool dryer went down because of no heat, *I've been watching a lot of how-to and troubleshooting videos, and by far, this is the best video I've seen.* Even though, I still haven't found the problem of why the heat isn't working on my dryer, this video is very informative and easy to follow. So far, I've ruled out the voltage to the dryer, the thermal cut-off fuse, hi-limit thermostat, and the thermal fuse. I'm just about ready to rule out the dryer timer/motor and the heater element. I'm just hoping that I find the problem before I have to get to that motor under the drum. A note of interest... my dryer is only 2 years old. Thank you, for a great video!
Hi there. I've seen problems before at the motor. Attached to the motor is a switch which only allows power to the heating element when the motor is running. Take it apart and check it out. Thanks For Watching!

Awesome tutorial - thanks! After 2 days of troubleshooting and replacing thermal cutoff/fuse, 2 thermostats, confirm heater and centrifugal switch are ok - I decided to pull the timer again and give it a good cleaning under a magnifying glass. Had intermittent heating issues....made a custom vacuum attachment from cereal boxes and duct tape and cleaned out the partition where the lint trap fits and it fixed the problem...thanks your are one smart guy....

Started dryer a second time and went to bed. Clothes not fully dry but heat was working. Three hours later it was still running but no heat. Timer doesn't move and no heat now. dryer looks somewhat like the one featured Roper HD EX lg cap 6cyl/3temp GREAT VIDEO !!! Operating temp thermo has 4 connects
You, Sir, are brilliant. Wonderful well presented and useful tube! In my case a loose connection in the wall plate on the black wire prevented the element from producing heat… luckily your good advise said to start by checking if both wires were producing their 120V… that fix the problem pronto! Did also check all other components and did a good cleaning to remove lint. My hat off to you Sir👍😎👍

Finally information is at hand....good video...couple things tho to help you...when you said not to bypass one of the fuses,, you should have also said NEVER BYPASS ANYTHING unless it is in order to quickly check for trouble shooting info. When you tested the element for a short to ground you placed a lead on the dryer body but the element housing was disconnected/removed from ground. Just a couple of bloopers. Otherwise it is obvious to me that you know what it's all about.

Very good video. I've checked all of that. Replaced the timer, start switch, thermal fuses, direct wired the motor and it and the motor switch work properly. But it still won't start. When the timer is set on 3 of the 4 off positions and the start button is pushed, the end of cycle buzzer will buzz. In any other position on the timer, nothing happens at all. Going to try a tone probe next to see if there's a short in any of the wiring.
Excellent video! Just what I was looking for! I thought it was the timer that was bad, I went through the troubleshooting process, and learned that the timer was bad and everything else appears to be fine. Now I'm not guessing, I'm testing, and I'm going to test the replacement timer when it arrives because I can't return it if it's bad and I installed it.

Thank you for an excellent video. My parents owned an appliance repair store, and I often feel like I channel my dad when repairing, and you remind me of that. I've run into a problem that your video does not seem to address. On a Frigidaire with a momentary start knob, it will normally start after briefly holding the knob. But now I need to hold it for a long time; the dryer starts, but may stop if I release the knob. It does start after a few tries with a long hold. Suggestion?

Very Good video! 71 years old DIY 😂 easy to see and understand! Maintenance on my 5 year old and belt and rollers Unit got noisy and found a worn shaft on the center one which appears to carry the most load from the drum. Now 3 months later element is visibly on but not trying in the Item as usual time , it appears to not being on th High level? I believe I should Ck the flow chart you mentioned and hopefully find my issue.
Some dryers (Kenmore) have also a switch called the "belt switch" ; if the belt breaks the system will not start at all. It is located on the bottom, next to the belt tensioner.

The only time power was connected, was to see if power is making it to the back panel of the machine. After that test, you unplug. Thanks for watching!
I've been troubleshooting a whirlpool cabrio dryer and have come up with nothing. It was running and I paused it to open it then nothing! It starts all the lights work the timer ticks off like there is a cycle running but no heat no spin! I've checked power, thermal fuse, thermostats, heating element, motor and so on! Everything you cover in this vid and more! Hoping you could shed some light on my ordeal!
Shouldn't 1 spade connector be removed from 1 side of the fuses and thermostats to prevent feedback when testing for ohms? Excellent very helpful video. Thank you.

looks like my motor start coil is shot. no ohm reading. got a normal 2 ohm reading on the main windings. problem is it won't start. was running fine, so makes sense. thanks for the great well made video!
great video but I do have a question. I have a kenmore elite dryer that wont start- nothing when the start button is pushed. I tested the start button-its ok, I believe the timer switch is faulty at a couple settings based on the wiring diagram. My question is would this prevent the dryer from starting in any setting?

Make sure the machine is unplugged, any capacitors are discharged, then test for continuity. If a test fails, then try again with the wires disconnected.
I was wondering why my dryer has 2 operating temp thermostats in lower left. They both look the same with the 4 pronged thermostat. My dryer is a Kitchenaid Superba and it works but it has only one temp (hot) and does go to the cool off cycle when timer reaches the last 10min of drying. However, I do have a delicate, and other cycles besides the towels (hot) cycle that when I set to still just blows the hot air??? Is.this because one of my operating temp thermostats is bad or again, why do I have two? No other dryer video I've watched has more than one. Thank you for posting such a detailed video on troubleshooting dryer operation because I learned alot!!
What you describe does sound like 2 thermostats. Look for the schematic(wiring diagram) in your dryer. Normally it is behind a cover or a piece of paper taped inside the unit. If the unit always blows hot no matter what setting, then there is a problem with the timer control or switch inside the motor.

Sounds like the connection was loose. As a result, it may have caused a short circuit across the terminals or to ground.

Awesome tutorial - thanks! After 2 days of troubleshooting and replacing thermal cutoff/fuse, 2 thermostats, confirm heater and centrifugal switch are ok - I decided to pull the timer again and give it a good cleaning under a magnifying glass. That was t = dryer works fine on all settings!! Thanks again! ...Alan

Had intermittent heating issues....made a custom vacuum attachment from cereal boxes and duct tape and cleaned out the partition where the lint trap fits and it fixed the problem...thanks your are one smart guy....

Either still dirty, a lack of airflow, or faulty thermal cut-off.
Started dryer a second time and went to bed. Clothes not fully dry but heat was working. Three hours later it was still running but no heat. Timer doesn't move and no heat now. dryer looks somewhat like the one featured Roper HD EX lg cap 6cyl/3temp GREAT VIDEO !!! Operating temp thermo has 4 connects
Timer not moving? Replace the timer.

You, Sir, are brilliant. Wonderful well presented and useful tube! In my case a loose connection in the wall plate on the black wire prevented the element from producing heat… luckily your good advise said to start by checking if both wires were producing their 120V… that fix the problem pronto! Did also check all other components and did a good cleaning to remove lint. My hat off to you Sir👍😎👍

Finally information is at hand....good video...couple things tho to help you...when you said not to bypass one of the fuses,, you should have also said NEVER BYPASS ANYTHING unless it is in order to quickly check for trouble shooting info. When you tested the element for a short to ground you placed a lead on the dryer body but the element housing was disconnected/removed from ground. Just a couple of bloopers. Otherwise it is obvious to me that you know what it's all about.

Very good video. I've checked all of that. Replaced the timer, start switch, thermal fuses, direct wired the motor and it and the motor switch work properly. But it still won't start. When the timer is set on 3 of the 4 off positions and the start button is pushed, the end of cycle buzzer will buzz. In any other position on the timer, nothing happens at all. Going to try a tone probe next to see if there's a short in any of the wiring.

Excellent video! Just what I was looking for! I thought it was the timer that was bad, I went through the troubleshooting process, and learned that the timer was bad and everything else appears to be fine. Now I'm not guessing, I'm testing, and I'm going to test the replacement timer when it arrives because I can't return it if it's bad and I installed it.

Thank you for an excellent video. My parents owned an appliance repair store, and I often feel like I channel my dad when repairing, and you remind me of that.
I've run into a problem that your video does not seem to address. On a Frigidaire with a momentary start knob, it will normally start after briefly holding the knob. But now I need to hold it for a long time; the dryer starts, but may stop if I release the knob. It does start after a few tries with a long hold. Suggestion?

Very Good video! 71 years old DIY 😂 easy to see and understand! Maintenance on my 5 year old and belt and rollers Unit got noisy and found a worn shaft on the center one which appears to carry the most load from the drum. Now 3 months later element is visibly on but not trying in the Item as usual time , it appears to not being on th High level? I believe I should Ck the flow chart you mentioned and hopefully find my issue.
Some dryers (Kenmore) have also a switch called the "belt switch" ; if the belt breaks the system will not start at all. It is located on the bottom, next to the belt tensioner.

The only time power was connected, was to see if power is making it to the back panel of the machine. After that test, you unplug. Thanks for watching!

I've been troubleshooting a whirlpool cabrio dryer and have come up with nothing. It was running and I paused it to open it then nothing! It starts all the lights work the timer ticks off like there is a cycle running but no heat no spin! I've checked power, thermal fuse, thermostats, heating element, motor and so on! Everything you cover in this vid and more! Hoping you could shed some light on my ordeal!
Door switch faulty? Unplug the unit to try resetting it?

Shouldn't 1 spade connector be removed from 1 side of the fuses and thermostats to prevent feedback when testing for ohms? Excellent very helpful video. Thank you.
It's a good idea to do that. I usually do that myself, unless it's very clear the fuse is in series with a power supply.

looks like my motor start coil is shot. no ohm reading. got a normal 2 ohm reading on the main windings. problem is it won't start. was running fine, so makes sense.

If you tested the correct terminals on the motor, and the capacitor is good, then yes, you likely need to replace.
Where is the capacitor located?

great video but I do have a question. I have a kenmore elite dryer that wont start- nothing when the start button is pushed. I tested the start button-its ok, I believe the timer switch is faulty at a couple settings based on the wiring diagram. My question is would this prevent the dryer from starting in any setting?

Make sure the machine is unplugged, any capacitors are discharged, then test for continuity. If a test fails, then try again with the wires disconnected.

I was wondering why my dryer has 2 operating temp thermostats in lower left. They both look the same with the 4 pronged thermostat. My dryer is a Kitchenaid Superba and it works but it has only one temp (hot) and does go to the cool off cycle when timer reaches the last 10min of drying. However, I do have a delicate, and other cycles besides the towels (hot) cycle that when I set to still just blows the hot air??? Is.this because one of my operating temp thermostats is bad or again, why do I have two? No other dryer video I've watched has more than one. Thank you for posting such a detailed video on troubleshooting dryer operation because I learned alot!!
What you describe does sound like 2 thermostats. Look for the schematic(wiring diagram) in your dryer. Normally it is behind a cover or a piece of paper taped inside the unit. If the unit always blows hot no matter what setting, then there is a problem with the timer control or switch inside the motor.
